1/16 Scale. This kit measures over 11 inches long. Highly detailed with over 100 plus parts. Parts come molded in metallic green, gray, chrome and clear. Also includes tubing and wiring and newly tooled real rubber tires designed by Jeff Faris. Newly designed Green Elephant Decal Sheet by Chuck Boerner and Mark Tutton. Big Box and a Big Kit with plenty of detail. Instruction booklet. Officially licensed with Jim and and Betty Green and General Motors.
Funny Car is a type of drag racing vehicle and a specific racing class in organized drag racing. Funny cars are characterized by having tilt-up fiberglass or carbon fiber automotive bodies over a custom-fabricated chassis, giving them an appearance vaguely approximating manufacturers' showroom models. They also have the engine placed in front of the driver, as opposed to dragsters, which place it behind the driver.
Funny car bodies typically reflect the models of newly available cars in the time period that the funny car was built. For example, in the 1970s, then current models such as the Chevrolet Vega or Plymouth Barracuda were often represented as funny cars, and the bodies represented the Big Three of General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler.[2] Currently, four manufacturers are represented in National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Funny Car - Chevrolet with the Camaro,[3] Dodge with the Charger,[4] Ford with the Mustang,[5] and Toyota with the Camry.
Today, fielding a Funny Car team can cost between US$2.6 and US$3 million.[8] A single carbon fiber body can cost US$70,000.
The NHRA has strict guidelines for Funny Cars. Most of the rules relate to the engine. In short, the engines can only be V8s displacing no more than 500 cu in (8,193.53 cc). The most popular design is a Donovan, loosely based on the second generation Chrysler 426 Hemi.
There can only be two valves per cylinder. The heads are machined from aluminum billet and have no water jackets, as the high latent heat of the methanol in the fuel coupled with the brevity of the run precludes the need. Superchargers are restricted to a basic Roots type-19-inch (480 mm) rotor case width with a breadth of 11.25 in (286 mm). Only single camshafts are allowed. There are two common bore-stroke combinations: 4.1875 in × 4.50 in (106.36 mm × 114.30 mm) (called a 3/4 stroker) and 4.25 by 4.375 inches (108.0 mm × 111.1 mm) (called a 5/8 stroker). The 3/4 stroker is the most common combination used today and equals 496 CID (8.1 L).
Funny Car fuel systems are key to their immense power. During a single run (starting, burnout, backing up, staging, 1/4 mile) cars can burn as much as 15 US gallons (12 imp gal; 57 L) of fuel. The fuel mixture is usually 85-90% nitromethane (nitro, "fuel") and 10-15% methanol (alcohol, "alky"). The ratio of fuel to air can be as high as 1:1. Compression ratios vary from 6:1 to 7:1. The engines in Funny Cars commonly exhibit varying piston heights and ratios that are determined by the piston's proximity to the air intake. Funny Cars have a fixed gear ratio of 3.20:1 and have a reversing gear; power is transmitted from engine to final drive through a multiple staged clutch which provides progressive incremental lockup as the run proceeds. The rate/degree of lockup is mechanically/pneumatically controlled and preset before each run according to various conditions, in particular track surface. Wheelbases are between 100 and 125 in (2,500 and 3,200 mm). The car must maintain a 3 in (76 mm) ground clearance.
Horsepower claims vary widely-from 6,978 to 8,897-but are probably around 8,000 HP. Supercharged, nitromethane-fueled motors of this type also have a very high torque, which is estimated at 7,000 ft⋅lbf (9,500 N⋅m). They routinely achieve a 6G acceleration from a standing start.
The Chrysler Hemi engines, known by the trademark Hemi, are a series of American I6 and V8 gasoline engines built by Chrysler with hemispherical combustion chambers. Three different types of Hemi engines have been built by Chrysler for automobiles: the first (known as the Chrysler FirePower engine) from 1951 to 1958,[1] the second from 1964 to 1971, and the third beginning in 2003. Although Chrysler is most identified with the use of "Hemi" as a marketing term, many other auto manufacturers have incorporated similar designs.

I grew up right down the street from Jim greens speed shop who built the green elephant.
I got to see him race it at Seattle international Raceway when I was a kid.
If he liked you he loved you if he didn’t he wouldn’t talk to you..
His shop moved from Lynnwood Washington out to Monroe Washington in the late 90s early 2000s
I believe it’s closed down now , the a green elephant was always a part of that Speed shop one way or another.
Thank you for taking me down memory lane..

I like BIG KITS. I can not lie. I like the large parts, my oh my. There's gotta be more to finish this rhyme - but there isn't. Dig the kit. And totally dig the build. It's nice to see how you work around things that aren't right - great problem solving. Thanks again, Chris, for yet another FINE Saturday morning!

    Chris
The people who has negative comment tell them that you make the mistakes so we do not have to. You point think so we do not make the mistake. I think people do not realize that you have to build the kit the way it’s comes for the review, you can not make improvement.

I sometimes run a piece of brass hobby wire inside the tubing to avoid kinks. Just make sure the wire is a little shorter to allow for the hose connection.
    Nice build !

That's one reason I keep a supply of electrical wires of various gauges on hand. Makes much better wiring and plumbing than the vinyl typically supplied with kits.
IIRC back in the day these kits were new they came with much more flexible, and glue-friendly, rubber tubing.

  • @michaelmoline7058

Maybe try some heat on the hoses? Or you could push some smaller wire into them around bends to stop the kinking, I agree, probably easier to just get new hose lol

I built a few 1/16 kits with engine wire back in the 80’s…. The yellow wire is the actual plug wire; the black tube is to be cut into short lengths and is slipped on to the yellow wire to connect it to the nipples on the end of the distributor, to simulate the boots.

yellow wire is for the plug wires, but, it doesn't look realistic if it's stiff. i found for 1:25 scale, wire wrap works perfect for plug wires. it's moldable so you can push it down so they lay like they have some weight to them, like real plug wires.

    • @crazytrain7114
      @crazytrain7114 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The yellow is actually for electrics and controls. The have the black tubing for plugwires, so I used blue stripped headphone wire with the black tubing for boots

Daggone it, I sure would like to get one of those, hell I still may, just get one so I can have it in the stash. Haha! Anyhow, turned out fantastic there bud, awesome sauce! lol! Let's see they were Roland Leong's Hawaiian, The Chi-town Hustler, Ed McColluch's Revellution, Jungle Jim's Vega there might've been a couple others.

Great vid . Havent built a model in 50+ years , but i may end up getting this if it is still available . I was fortunate enough to watch the GREEN ELEPHANT run at SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY back in the early 70's . There were actually 2 Green Elephants . The model pictured is of the original which was piloted by Frank Hall and went on to win NHRA funny car world championship in 1973 . A second green elephant was built in 1977 .
In the late 70's I had an L-88 engine ( for a 72 camaro ) built at JIM GREENS SPEED SHOP ( later named Jim Greens Perfomance Center ) in lynnwood , Wa . They later changed the name because they felt that speed shop had some negative connotations due to all of the street racers who frequented his shop.
They used to display the original Green Elephant on the roof of the shop . There used to be a heavy police presence in the neighborhood of the shop because all of the hot rodders and street racers of the day would frequent the shop . It used to be the machine shop of choice if you wanted high end machine work done . So this model would be like a walk down memory lane for me . The building (and memories) still stand , but Jim Greens Speed Center is long gone .

Hey, this was a revell model back in the day. I must say I'm a 1/16th scale person actually anything larger than 1/24th just for ease of building and $$$ value. I feel sorry for the young people getting into the hobby because its its ridiculously priced and the kits in my opinion aren't really that good nor exciting. When I was a kid AMT 3 in 1 kits were $1.99 or possibly $2.00 and we used to get them at our local drug store. Talk about quality and selection. Also Monogram was the king with excellent kits also. Getting back to this Atlantis kit, I have 3 maybe 4 Revell's purchased off Ebay at fair prices and every single one had broken frames, warppage beyond belief, tires that were so out of shape they are useless bodies twisted ... need I go on. The chrome is about as nasty as it can be. So my question is what makes these has beens any different today aside from a green body? They were junk then and I'm supposing junk today. Out of all these kits I managed to make one by using salvageable parts from all 4. Not a way to build a model. FYI all the Revell 1/16 kits from the era are nothing but a royal pain to build. Such a pity because the potential is there.

Chris As always a great job enjoy watching your videos and learning some things from you.. I don't understand why there's haters out there I don't get it... Take it all in because everybody learns from everybody at some point.. It's an enjoyment of somebody taking pride in it. And why everybody has to cut somebody else down. Because they don't believe it's the right way to do it or whatever. It's model building.. It's not brain surgery.. Enjoy it like you say all the time. If you're happy with it.. That's all that matters... Thank you again

Meh, even Bob Ross and Mr Rogers had haters and those guys were next level chill and fun.
I attract a lot of them because I just keep having fun and banging out kits, sharing the excitement with others. They don't like when others keep enjoying themselves in their own way.
Let them do their online complaining (Usually it's because their personal lives are a wreck) and we'll keep having all the fun they are missing out on.
