Its freakin amazing how much technology evolved over the last couple of years. Imagine putting this in a rack, with a sampler (+ click for the drummer + midi switching the channels/presets) + wireless for the guitars and basses and have your power + XLRs for the FOH in one multicore. (maybe even an inear-mixing-console + the transmitters etc.) You basically show up at a gig and be ready to rock in less than a minute.
Basically like Line 6 Helix Snapshots. We've been able to do this for years. It works the same way. You stick a bunch of amps on the signal paths. They don't even need to be on separate paths. But if you want, you also have four paths on the Helix. Then you just set up snapshots to turn amps, cabs, pedals on and off per prefix. So you can set up stomps to switch amps, cabs, etc just like on the QC. What's cool w/ the Helix is that I can also control the Variax guitars. So I can also control tuning (per-string, not just dropping the entire signal by x intervals, so I can go between a drop tuning and a "standard " tuning, to an open tuning with a stomp of a switch), guitar model, any variax setting, with snapshots. I can say, go from a Les Paul to a Strat, to a Banjo, to a 12-string electric or acoustic with a stomp. They can also send midi commands to other devices when a snap is selected through command-center, change inputs/outputs, etc. So you can also control outside devices. Pretty insane.
Wow. Ola. This is the video I wanted and needed to see. I was honestly so close canceling my preorder. But you definitely nailed it when it came to showcasing how powerful and how functional this unit is live. Thank you for this video. 🙏🏽
I recently acquired a QC for home recording and last week my live amp, a Bogner Ecstacy 101B, blew a tube so I needed a quick replacement to get through the next couple of shows. I decided to try the QC direct to the PA using some of the factory amp captures it came loaded with and it worked out really well. I had a lot of friends at the gig who said they wouldn't have even noticed I was running direct if I hadn't told them. I did however have this glitching issue during patch changes which this video addresses. Thanks for this video as it will save me some time troubleshooting and resolving that problem in the future. Besides the glitchiness between patch changes, there were some challenges with achieving a good tone through both the FOH speakers and my monitor. I'm not terribly worried about that as I'm confident I'll be able to dial in the tones a bit more to my liking over time. At the moment, I can say I definitely prefer my tube head to the QC for my live tone. That being said, the QC sounded pretty damn good especially considering how little time I had to throw the patches together. Going forward I plan to fine tune my QC live performance patches and I'll always keep it with me as a backup rig for live shows.

Thanks so much for another great video. would be nice to see a video on running the quad cortex through a power amp and a cabinet of your choice as there is not always a PA available for day-to-day practicing.
Helix got a seamless switching recently (not for Stomp though), but you have to sacrifice one DSP path. Still, for live use 8 blocks is quite a lot, plus you don't have to tinker with snapshots or anything, just make a bunch of presets. You even can program all the 12 footswitches to switch to a different preset if needed just have everything one switch away.
I notice a hiccup in the sound on the FM3 when switching channels in the amp block. I use a preset with just an amp block and no cab: IN1 -> AMP -> OUT1. Instead of a CAB block, I'm using an external solid state amp (Boss WAZA TAE) with a real VOX AC30 cabinet + speakers. In the Amp block on the FM3, I use the amp type "CLASS-A 30W" for one channel and "CLASS-A 30W TB" for the second channel. Scenes 1 and 2 switch between these two channels. Compared to just stomping an analog drive pedal on/off which feels instant, there is definitely a gap, and I find it to be very awkward when switching in the middle of playing. See my reply to Billy Repko a couple of posts above to read about why I think this gap happens.
I actually use this feature for lessons. I teach bass guitar & music production/recording, this thing is actually VERY convenient for all of that. I can have bass rigs and two different guitar rigs ready at any given time and even plug any students into it at the same time I'm playing if I need to. Oh, and the looper can record for a little less than 5 minutes
Here's an idea for a video. A blind test for fretwraps. People claim they can hear the difference in overtones and therefore they need the wrap even for plain riff scenarios. Put that to the test for science! Scenarios with a backing track and without one would be cool. Loved your previous blind tests.
Fast fwd. You can do scenes in this just like snapshots. I have both this and the helix and this feels like an amp and sounds better. Same thing re the Kemper. I’ll take this over both. Buy my amps will always come first. But I love adding different pedals to the quad. I don’t care to capture them. I like using them externally. No latency with scenes here. .
Ola, the amp and cab blocks on the FM3 have 4 channels, so you can select between any 4 amps and 4 cabs using scenes. This means that you can have completely different sounds without having to change presets.
yes but you still have to tap dance to scroll thru with only 3 foot switches. The QC does not require tap dancing which is a huge plus factor. That is my main issue with my fm3 that and only 1 amp/cab oh and I forgot the CAPTURE thing.
@@r.llynch4124 I use 2 Roland FS7 dual switches which gives me a total of 7 switches. This works great for my needs. I would like to try out the QC at some point.
@@thegodless2904 I have the fm3. Yes price is close to same but now you have 2 pieces of gear just to get more switches and something else to break. If you don't mind that it's a great unit.
Billy, Ola's main point here is *gapless* switching. Channels on the FM3 do not run simultaneously, so there's a short gap in the sound when switching. The trick Ola has exploited here on the QC--and it's a genius use case--is to make sure that the amp blocks remain loaded when switching scenes by simply bypassing them. The QC manual says, "Bypassing / disabling the blocks doesn’t decrease the CPU consumption," (version 1.0.0, page 17). The bad news there is that bypassed blocks use CPU; the good news is that it's always loaded so switching between bypassed and enabled is instant. This trick only works if you have enough CPU for all the blocks. You can do the same trick on the FM3 with the blocks "Drive 1" and "Drive 2" by bypassing them on various scenes; it works for the same reasons--the blocks are always running on the CPU, regardless of whether they are bypassed or not. This doesn't work with amps because the FM3 only allows one amp block per preset due to CPU availability. Only the amp type in the channel of the current scene on the FM3 is actually loaded--the other 3 channels are swapped in and out of that block when switching scenes, so you hear a slight gap in the audio playback during the loading period. "Switching between amp sounds" on the Fractal wiki is a fascinating read on this topic: wiki.fractalaudio.com/wiki/index.php?title=Amp_block#Switching_between_amp_sounds
Hi Ola! 1. You forgott Boss Gt-1000 2. When you review Boss Gt-1000, you said the patch changes were seamless, and they are indeed. Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘🇵🇹
@@mathieupelletier4392 Aye, I’d be happy if they did a version with just one guitar input at a time, it makes sense to all the weekend warriors out there.
makes sense, you're running all 4 paths constantly, never loading anything in or out. imo every modeler should have a way to buffer in several presets for quick switching like this
Ola, try Digitech GSP1101, it's oldman which fuck up all new guitar processors in smooth switching between presets. Micro latency and no glitches. After switching, the tail of the previous sound remains. Dual core. They made it in the 2000s!
The more practical application is for processing guitar and vocals at the same time. I want to hear some vocals through this with some reverb or maybe growling with a pitch shift
Ola, please consider making an A/B test of one amp/preset with same IR between your FM3 and the QC, including your personal opinion of the "feeling" while playing. It would also be interesting making a comparison between a Neural plugin like Plini or Gojira and the QC. Especially the Gojira Plugin has a grinding growly "feeling" in the lower mids that I cannot get out of my FM3.
Great video Ola - nice unit no doubt - seems pretty user friendly almost fun huh yes , no ,maybe kinda. Subject change waiting on the solar headless 6 & 7 string guitars with trem systems. It's a market you should jump on (in my opinion) why let Kiesel & Strandberg take it all your guitars would appeal to the metal market I know I would get a Solar. The time is now.
That feature is amazing, so, would I be able to use my guitar in one line and plug a mic for vocals in other line to have some reverb, compressor etc? If it works like that I'll be surely buying it!
The one last thing I'd like to see is a combination of the two things shown in this video - can you have a row for Guitarist 1, a row for Guitarist 2, and a row for Bass, and then have each row with 2 or 3 amps (with only 1 amp engaged at a time) and switch between the amps via scenes? Therefore you click click one button and change Guitar 1 from rhythm to lead, Guitar 2 from rhythm to clean, and Bass from overdriven to clean. I'm not planning on using my QC in this way (the rest of the guys in my band can buy their own gear ;P) but it would still be sick if that was possible!
That will depend on the total CPU usage. You're talking about 3 players each with 2-3 amps, multiplied together, that means 6 to 9 amps in the same preset. Note that even if an amp block is NOT engaged, it still uses the same processing power as when it IS engaged. Here is the exact wording from the Quad Cortex manual on the subject: "Bypassing/disabling the blocks doesn't decrease the CPU consumption. Rows 1-2 and Rows 3-4 on The Grid utilise different processor cores. If all of your device blocks are placed in Rows 1 and 2, you're only using half of [QC]'s power. [...] try splitting your blocks across all four rows. The maximum load is up to 90%. Some devices may use more DSP than others in the same category. This is especially true with amp devices." -- QC manual 1.0.0, page 17.
We all know and have seen Spinal Tap. Anything that can go wrong will... live. All my bands eggs in one basket sounds like a recipe for disaster. Would need a backup for sure.
I was at a Tool show here in milwaukee about a year ago and in the middle part of schism Adams guitar rig stopped working for some reason...looks like he had a main controller of some sort for all of his gear by his feet and there were 2 techs running back and forth trying to figure out what was going on for a good 5 minutes and they just jammed out
Leon Todd does this with his FM3, or did before lockdown. but for his guitar and his bass player. Doesn't have a second guitarist. Not sure if that unit can do 2 guitars or not. if not, it is def an advantage to the cortex to have that flexibility
The FM3 allows you to load 4 seperate amps to switch between using scenes. You are not limited to 1 amp per preset, you are limited to 1 simultaneous amp per scene/reset. You can absolutely have a fender clean, marshall crunch, mesa rhyhm and 5150 lead in one preset by using scenes.
Yo Ola, i use a Helix and it also has those glitches while switchin presets, but, i can use 2 amps in one preset and control them with snapshots. This means i build my presets like that: (Simple) Ovd amp -> clean amp -> cab ir Then the preset has like 2 snapshots, these snapshots control the bypass of the amp. So if i hit the first, it bypasses the clean amp an i play with overdrive. If if press the second it bypasses the overdrive amp and i play clean. So what i wanted to say is, that the helix is capable of doing those things and its really mighty.
I’m glad you demoed this capability! This is definitely how I’ve been intending to use it live. Make use of all that horsepower. What parameter are you actually changing between scenes to operate the signal chains independently via the same inputs and outputs? I don’t see any blocks toggling on or off. Are you just muting input at the front of the path for the inactive signal chains?
That's a great investment for a band. Say you have two guitarists and a bassist like in your example. That's 1600€ divided by 3, so 533 per person. And you get a complete rig with basically everything you can dream of tone-wise. That's a steal. For a single person not so much though lol
So would I be able to run my guitar stereo straight to front of house with a mono output to a power amp and cab, and a bass player output as well? How would that look input/output wise?
Great sounds. However my Boss GT1000 is totally latency-free between patches. Not talking about snapshots or scene mode or whatever. The transition from a patch to another is simply seamless.
Ola can you get controlled feedback from these types of modelers in a live situation? The good kind of mid-range feedback where a note just blooms when you hold it?
That’s pretty incredible. If you run an automatic switching setup like Periphery you really only need this one modeler. You could even give the individual players each there own (wireless) midi controller to only switch their own sounds. Pretty damn cool. Can you put two amps in one row and just switch between them?
It really depends on how complex the patch is tho. Even the helix can run 3 guitars at the same time if you just use an amp and IR block. But the more complex you get, and you usually get complex with a modeler, the less you can run. Also if you run all guitars trouhg one unit, if it fails, you are royaly fucked.
@@w0mbatina Ok, your last sentence is a very good point. That would suck. That being said, many bands use a lot of „backing tracks“ nowadays. They could just unmute the three missing tracks in their DAW if the modeler fails. 😉 Cheers
That's the question I'm interested in as well! If you could have three rows for three instruments/players, with two amps in each row, and then switch from Scene A to Scene B, and have it so that: Player 1 switches off their overdrive and switches from a 5150 to a clean Fender or something, Player 2 stays on the same amp but engages reverb and delay, player three (bass) switches off the overdrive and maybe adjusts some EQ on the amp. All in one scene change/one button press. IF that's possible (I haven't seen any examples yet - this video is the closest) I will be super impressed!
So another Quad Cortex video showcasing it in a live situation, or how I would use it live.
Legend \m/

Put that to the test for science! Scenarios with a backing track and without one would be cool. Loved your previous blind tests.
Fretwraps are for people who wanna look cool, They serve no other purpose.
There are some that claim they can hear the difference in their tone when a fly lands on their headstocks, too. LOL
Also, on Helix, you can set up 4 paths with 4 amps in a single patch and use snapshots to do what you're doing in this video.
No latency with scenes here. .
You can run the entire band trough it!? OK, this is a game changer.
Bought one yesterday. Still haven't stopped playing it yet.
@@r.llynch4124 buy the FC6 to mate with the FM3, combined cost will be less or equal to QC.
The QC manual says, "Bypassing / disabling the blocks doesn’t
decrease the CPU consumption," (version 1.0.0, page 17).
"Switching between amp sounds" on the Fractal wiki is a fascinating read on this topic:

Curious to see when it’s out.
Really looking forward to playing through this thing!
Hi Ola!
1. You forgott Boss Gt-1000
2. When you review Boss Gt-1000, you said the patch changes were seamless, and they are indeed.
Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘🇵🇹
Still, 90% of the buyers will play alone in their bedroom.🤣
99% and that applies to any guitar gear

@@irishRocker1 so true! Yet still hilarious to see people getting crazy about the fact that you can plug many guitars in the QC.
@@mathieupelletier4392 Aye, I’d be happy if they did a version with just one guitar input at a time, it makes sense to all the weekend warriors out there.
@@irishRocker1 So no need for the QC, pc or mac is enough to play in bedroom
makes sense, you're running all 4 paths constantly, never loading anything in or out. imo every modeler should have a way to buffer in several presets for quick switching like this
It would be nice to "double-tap" on the icons to turn them on/off.
Or just tap on/off. Or Tap and hold to bring up parameters.
Badass Ola, make us chuggggg!!🤘❤
Ola, try Digitech GSP1101, it's oldman which fuck up all new guitar processors in smooth switching between presets. Micro latency and no glitches. After switching, the tail of the previous sound remains. Dual core. They made it in the 2000s!
just a side-note, I love seeing your left arm tattoo grow ;)

A shame of the pandemic, would love to see all the members of the haunted jamming to a song using this, that would be killer to watch.
Wow ... that's a more than mighty machine. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Quad CorDex......but on a serious note: great video Ola 👍
Ola you can have multiple amps/settings in the Helix floor per Preset. You can then use snapshots to change from one amp to another without drop out.
That should work, in theory you could have separate midi boards connected to allow separate switching of specific things
That will depend on the total CPU usage. You're talking about 3 players each with 2-3 amps, multiplied together, that means 6 to 9 amps in the same preset. Note that even if an amp block is NOT engaged, it still uses the same processing power as when it IS engaged. Here is the exact wording from the Quad Cortex manual on the subject:
"Bypassing/disabling the blocks doesn't decrease the CPU consumption.

Going to get one of those for my band.
I like the sounds to, not just the power.
It only takes one band to have the balls to take this out on the road.
I would buy two in that case
Leon Todd does this with his FM3, or did before lockdown. but for his guitar and his bass player. Doesn't have a second guitarist. Not sure if that unit can do 2 guitars or not. if not, it is def an advantage to the cortex to have that flexibility

Great info. on the quadcortex Thanx Ola
7:10 So... is the system continously running all the channels in parallel and switching actually does a quick fade from one channel to another?
Fantastic tool.
This means i build my presets like that:
(Simple)
Ovd amp -> clean amp -> cab ir
Then the preset has like 2 snapshots, these snapshots control the bypass of the amp.
So if i hit the first, it bypasses the clean amp an i play with overdrive. If if press the second it bypasses the overdrive amp and i play clean.
So what i wanted to say is, that the helix is capable of doing those things and its really mighty.
Pretty sick it can do all that
Technology keeps a going!
When changing between Amps does it have VU meters to help set volume levels?
4 amps 4 cabs and 60% That's crazy good shit.
YES THANK YOU I NEEDED THIS 🙏
So would I be able to run my guitar stereo straight to front of house with a mono output to a power amp and cab, and a bass player output as well? How would that look input/output wise?
Great video. Damn thing is hella powerful \,,/
Great sounds. However my Boss GT1000 is totally latency-free between patches. Not talking about snapshots or scene mode or whatever. The transition from a patch to another is simply seamless.
The fact this sounds amazing through my very recycled iPhone 8 Plus...says a hell of lot!
Cheers
That's the question I'm interested in as well!
If you could have three rows for three instruments/players, with two amps in each row, and then switch from Scene A to Scene B, and have it so that: Player 1 switches off their overdrive and switches from a 5150 to a clean Fender or something, Player 2 stays on the same amp but engages reverb and delay, player three (bass) switches off the overdrive and maybe adjusts some EQ on the amp. All in one scene change/one button press. IF that's possible (I haven't seen any examples yet - this video is the closest) I will be super impressed!
there is no glitch in kemper! why does no one mention it? you can use deferent amps and switch with no sound drops
