Air conditioners do NOT work with open windows and open doors. Block off the entrance to your cabin with a sheet of plastic or a curtain if you cannot shut the door.

    • @Gottenhimfella
      @Gottenhimfella 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It is probably normal for Finnish people not to have spent time around air conditioners!
So I'm sure the advice will come in handy.

After 20 years of using propane on the boat we took the decision to switch to electricity. In Europe the price is now massive and that's if you can actually get hold of refills! They seem to be as rare as hens teeth. We have an induction hob and recently installed a thing called a ninja foodi. It's all singing and dancing unit that roasts , pressure cooks bakes, slow cooks and quite a few more choices. It has taken some getting used to, I miss the propane stove, but boy is it fast and cheap!. We installed 340 watts of solar and two 170aph lithium batteries. we also already had a KISS wind generator. So far so good. Because you can vary the wattage on the hob and it cooks much quicker not only have we managed to keep up with the power needs but we have eliminated the cost of the gas. May be a direction that you could consider?
Love your sense of adventure, work ethic and joie de vivre! Best of luck.

Induction cooking causes less condensation is much less likely to catch fire and auto shuts off when the pot/pan is removed!

If you are talking with Selden please suggest to them that a spreader ‘U’ shaped clip on to house mast uplighting, deck downlighting, and possibly a security camera would be very appreciated. At the moment I am designing a 6Kg front loading washing machine specifically for boats to go under the fwd bunk on whichever is the widest side (head side) to be front or top mounted. At the moment I have a top loading 3.5 kg washer and spin dryer but it uses too much water for cruising so I’ve decided to do a redesign and cost it out. The fwd bunk because that space is harder to use for storage withe the narrow bottom and it works well with a specially shaped barrel. And the containment housing can have a second skin for hydronic hot water so it can be a dryer as well.
I want to reduce my skin fittings and do a stand pipe as well. Great idea. If you know any young guys who like to do Arduino programming, I am going to populate my boat with Arduino modules for a range of functions ( electric toilet controller, washing machine controller, lighting control system, bilge and gas monitor system, heat and air conditioning management eventually, black waste treatment) so that after lightning strikes the boat can be “healed” quickly with cheap swap out modules even while at sea. On that subject, here in the Netherlands in Dordrecht there isa company that supplies everything for EMF shielding, even materials to line existing cupboards to protect against lightning EMF.

May I suggest that you rig a boom tent over as much of the deck as possible. Give it plenty of height to get around underneath. It will at least keep the direct sun and rain off you while working. As you know, aluminium boats conduct heat really well.

Dude!....And I can say "Dude" because I've spent 99.9% of my years in the central valley of California, welcome to summer here. It must be a little brutal coming from a country that has "Ice" in its name, that has to be quite a shock. I'm liking what you are doing with a boat that deserves a new life. Looking forward to your rebuild. Let me know if you need any help. You know, the grunt type stuff. I'm not that far away.

When I asked my wife if we could manage as live aboard....she replied that "in no way would she be coming with". So if you understand the spirit of adventure and lively project sailboats are supreme as interest to myself.....alas, my roots have grown to a home anchor as a frame house and workshop. And, where I might manage a dingy just up on a lake basin for an hour or so. There is no chance of bracing salt air for this observer.
As for the quality, the design of this aluminum hull, I think well formed design and robust strength were the first point as layout. And, where that engine looked in very good condition. I think a concept project that will have many benefits for what ever span of sail is intended.
Having a workshop and involved with repair of various machines and craft....I have rather observed a recent spike in costs. Such that no simple economy is enough to meet the real cost as a refit. Where sails, rigging, electronics and supporting appliance must work and without fail. With that general point of view, I will be very curious to see how progress continues. In part, as there are others who attempt such refit in various stages, various designs. And where I truly like and admire...those who determine to live and proceed freely at the sea. Fair winds...from Washington State, US. M.

Make compartments in the boat, and get watertight doors. While you are stripping it, this is the right time to do it. That way, you are sure that you wont sink (as easily).

Hey man...I say from here on out take as long as u can to complete the refit. I know by now you are done and back in the water but I would love to see every little project.
If you look at sailing genre videos some of the most views come from refit videos!
Also...dont fill the cabinets with the wood and fiberglass like they were...just paint them.
Bottom line...take your time on refit vodeos...people love them...myself included.
I just came across your channel again after not watching you for a year and I would have told you this a long time ago. And I will be looking for you on Patreon!
You're the best! Take your time and show us all the details!
Now, I know you say it's not all about the views..but it is, it really is.
If you want a good idea on an awesome refit on an aluminum and steel oat check out Odd Life Crafing. They have a lot of good ideas on metal refit.
Maybe you can find a good place back over seas that can help specialize in aluminum cold water boats?!
I love u guys and want you to do this right all along!
    KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK!

An idea if you can find a kids fabric play tunnel with plastic hoops put it Vertically over a deck hatch, hoist the other end up on a damaged line as far as its long..
It should act as a chimney and draw more hot air out of the boat.

Have you considered eliminating propane and using electric stove and refrigeration?
You are a great team! I would encourage you to "Do it right the first time" and not worry too much about the actual time required. Doing things over takes more time and costs a lot more in the long run.

What materials will provide best thermal barrier and sound deadening? I've enjoyed your channel immensely. Your early work in the wilderness was breathtaking. As suggested elsewhere, please add a numbering scheme so people can watch sequentially later on. Film as much as you can and you'll have much to edit underway. Good luck with the build!

As for the windows, so I would consider installing thermopene glass with a system like "Rafa" from Leusden in the Netherlands does. I also mounted it in the wheelhouse of my Fisher 30 North Easter and it saves condensation on the windows and comfort, and I'm sailing summer and winter in the Netherlands.

Always carnage, good some enjoyment it taken in this hard work. Sorry for the 3-month pressure, current issues don’t see an end to it. Just make it South, sure you two can do it! Some cost will actually drop on leaving, sorry to say we’re pricey to outfit here.
Grand success or channel doing well and getting sponsors.
Lockers, I call that work s*!@t balled, legacies of owners that don’t care. Really interested to see how you do insulation.
The AC will be more effective if it is boxed to a hatch(forward preferably), keep the duct to separate and direct to your work zone. A few pvc pipe ribs and a white or silver tarp shade over the spar will massively reduce the heating. Just one rib per grommet set works great.
You have a sauna just sitting in the yard lol. That said it hit 108f on the water here (Port Townsend )last year while I was away, gastly. Suppose I could drop a curtain in my forward galley make a non dedicated sauna, like to see what your build is.

awesome Juho. Crazy to see that grp and unfinished ply in the lockers. Great that it hasn't compromised the aluminium. I'm sure you can do the work needed to get afloat and on your way to colder climes. best of luck. Andy UK

Nowadays anybody that has a good thumbnail of them saying they're buying a boat and refitting it blows up I'd say keep this boat refit going and your sub count will blow up

Unless a whole lot of your anticipated cruising is to be north of the treeline, you might consider installing a woodstove into your boat. Here on the BC coast, we've been heating our Spencer 35 sloop for 15 years with a woodstove and putting that in is the single best improvement I've ever done to the boat. We gather firewood as we go, so no need for a large woodshed on board, and we can always find ready-to-burn firewood like yellow cedar, yew or shorepine just with a bit of beachcombing. We can easily heat the whole boat to a sauna-like temperature, but dump excess heat immediately just by opening the forward hatch and companionway. We also have a double bus heater plumbed into the engine for when we're motoring. Basically, as far as I'm concerned, you can never have too much heat on a boat, -and running diesel heaters is going to cost you more than $10 every day.. Love your show! Cheers, Ingmar (and when you do head north, please be welcome to tie up at our dock here in the heart of the "Great Bear Rainforest" on the BC Central Coast! www.spindriftpoint.com)
