Trying to speak DUTCH without ever learning it (as an Afrikaans person)

- So. I might either embarrass myself very much online, or this might be the start of a new language adventure... or both. For context, I am Afrikaans but I have never studied Dutch before. I have, however, listened to a lot of Dutch music and watched a lot of Instagram reels in Dutch.
So, I just try and copy the pronunciation and try and think what the word might be, BUT I have no knowledge of grammar, tenses or much vocabulary, really.
I want to use this video as a log to see how far I can come in my Dutch learning journey. So, please go easy on me!

when you said you felt like speaking afrikaans with a dutch pronunciation, i felt that. as a spanish speaker, when i started learning portuguese i felt like i was just speaking spanish with a portuguese accent lmao

Spanish speakers are speaking too fast their own language, but Portuguese speakers speak slowly. But both languages really have many similarities.
@@lobofelipelobo brazilians do speak relatively slow, but i'm learning european portuguese, and people from portugal do speak kinda fast lol
but yeah, the similarities that language has with spanish are really helpful when learning, so the speed at which people speak is not that big of a issue thankfully
Same when I try to speak Spanish. My drunk Russian accent keeps stumbling in.

I had a similar situation trying to speak Portuguese being a Spanish native speaker. Right now I'm learning a bit because I'm traveling to Brazil soon to solve some personal matters!

I had to admit defeat when trying to learn Dutch. I've never met so many native speakers downplay their own language. I had a university professor who spent more time dismissing the utility of Dutch than teaching it

Was busy applying for a job but I saw this was uploaded a minute ago and just had to pause and watch. Your Dutch is so good! I know it's closely related to Afrikaans but you still sound like you've lived here for at least a few months. Some of the grammar and the pronunciations were a bit off but overall it's very clear and understandable. You could probably move here right now and, at the very least, survive.

I got to an advanced level in Dutch after only focusing on it for about 3 months or 300 hours of study - I am learning 15+ languages at the moment, including Icelandic + Norse / Dutch / Norwegian / Welsh / Breton etc, and I highly recommend learning these gorgeous languages as they are as pretty / refined / poetic as English, so they are too pretty not to know! I use the best learning techniques aka spaced repetition (watching tons of vocab videos with many hundreds and thousands of words and idioms / videos on grammar etc multiple times over a period of time, until each word can be instantly processed and automatically remembered / used) and memorizing lyrics and watching every video with subs in the target languages etc, and my main focus is on vocab videos and all sorts of videos, especially as a beginner and intermediate, which is by far the fastest and the best language learning method, so if one wants to learn languages as fast as possible, vocab videos are the way to go! I started learning languages on my own about one year ago, plus I only chose pretty languages which are category 1 languages and category 2 languages (and two category 3 languages such as Irish / Scottish Gaelic) which also makes the learning process a lot more fun - so choosing wisely is key, aka choosing the pretty languages for their pretty words and sounds, as opposed to choosing languages by how many native speakers they have etc!
I could understand the words, by the way - the verb to practice in Dutch is oefenen (ik oefen = I practice) and to speak is spreken (ik spreek) and, I highly recommend the vocab videos with 2.000 Dutch words / 1.000 Dutch words etc and the vocab videos from the GoLearn yt with hundreds and thousands of Dutch words with Dutch to English translations and Dutch to Spanish translations etc (there are also many Icelandic to English / Icelandic to Spanish / Icelandic to Dutch videos and Norwegian to English / Swedish to Danish / Danish to English etc videos from GoLearn) which are great for beginners and Intermediates, plus all the grammar related videos from all those yt teaching Dutch (there are also multiple Icelandic grammar videos, by the way, and also Norwegian ones, so I highly recommend learning them 2gether as it makes the learning process a lot more fun and it saves a lot of years) and lyrics in Dutch such as those Dutch versions of Disney songs like Nightmare Before Christmas songs and the ones about the hunchback from Notre Dame and the Frozen / Ik Ben Vaiana / Brave and Little Mermaid songs etc, which are all great and have lots of different words that are easy to memorize, and the more recent Disney songs and the original Little Mermaid songs also have Icelandic / Danish / Norwegian / Swedish / German versions, by the way, so I highly recommend learning them all!

Some feedback points:
Ik ben Lindie uit Zuid-Afrika ('van' also means 'from', but in this construction you need to use 'uit')
Ik denk dat het Nederlands een heel mooie taal is (you can use both 'heel' and 'hele', need to put 'is' at the end here)
maar het probleem is, dat... (niet 'zijn') ik nooit Nederlands geleerd of gestudeerd heb
en zodoende (this is fine, but it sounds a bit official, like in written speech or in a debate. Here you could use "daarom" or "daardoor")
Ik probeer de woorden Nederlands uit te spreken (not sure what the rule is, but this is the correct sentence)
Dat is heel moeilijk voor mij. (conjugation)
Maar ik heb geen vrienden of kennissen die Nederlands spreken ("die" refers back to "vrienden" and "kennissen", a "kennis" is an acquaintance")
Deze video is ongescript en ongepland (you could also say improvised, which is "geïmproviseerd")

dus (so = dus. "Zo" can also mean so, but not in this context)

help me (mij is only used when you want to stress/clarify it is you and nobody else, otherwise you can just use 'me. This is both in spoken in written Dutch. For the possesive (my), you can use the contraction "m'n" when you are speaking and "mijn" when you are writing )
Dankjewel allemaal, dat jullie naar mijn video hebben gekeken. (Kijken = to watch, baby chicken = "kuiken". "gekeken" is the past participle of kijken)
Doei (bye)/ tot de volgende keer (see you next time) / bedankt voor het kijken (thank you for watching) / leuk dat jullie gekeken hebben (it's nice that you watched this) ("Tot ziens" is a formal goodbye when you are not sure when or whether you will see somebody again)

I love this! I recently recorded myself trying to get back into a language (& struggling majorly!) and kept thinking how the social media polyglots only show this super polished version of themselves that might deter language learners or make them believe they aren't good at languages if they struggle. Ik spreek trouwens iets Nederlands, heb in Nederland gestudeerd maar het is al 10 jaar geleden 😅 Good luck on the journey. You're inspiring me to upload these kinds of videos as well!

(I highly recommend learning Dutch / Icelandic + Norse / Norwegian as they are so magical - all other Germanic and the other pretty languages on my list are also gorgeous, so they are all a great option!)

Your Dutch is really well for someone who has never studied it. I could understand all of it. You make some common mistakes like the wrong order of the pronoun and verb in more complicated sentences (they swap in some sentence constructions but it's hard to think of which right now) and sometimes you use the infinitive instead of the first person of a verb, but most of your vocabulary and grammar was correct. I think if you just look into the grammar for a bit to familiarise yourself, you'll make progress really quickly
I'm glad the language is in a state of being healthy.
I've also never studied Dutch, some Danish and a touch of German, but I could understand quite a bit of what you were saying.

As someone who grew up with Dutch as a first language and Frisian as my second language, I feel exactly the same as you! I can think in Frisian, I can understand it. But when I try to talk it feels like I’m just speaking Dutch with an accent.
Your Dutch is really good and you should never feel ashamed to try and speak language. I feel like especially in The Netherlands people are really excited when somebody tries to speak as it is more convenient to speak English for tourist/expats, because everyone will still understand you. I think you did great. Seriously. I've been studying Dutch for a couple of years and while I understand it quite well, I still struggle to speak in Dutch. The only things I can think of to comment on is that you probably say "wil graag" in places where you could just say "wil". And for your followers you could just use "volgers" which to me is easier to say than "abonnees" and more typical I think. Veel succes met je nederlands leren!

Wow! This was fascinating. It's like when I as a Spanish speaker try to fake my way around Portuguese. I used to be a Spanish courtroom interpreter. One time there was a Brazilian defendant, and the judge asked me to interpret for him. I tried to get the judge to understand that Portuguese is not the same as Spanish (!), but he insisted. Somehow I managed to fake my way through the hearing, and the defendant seemed to think I did okay. It was actually easier for me to understand his Portuguese than to understand, say, Puerto Rican Spanish.
Het klinkt echt goed. Jy kan dit baie snel leer. Ik ben nooit in SA geweest, maar na een paar jaar netwerk24 abonnement en TH-cam Afriforum en dat soort programma's bekijken, begrijp ik nu wel (bijna) alles. Lees vooral ook veel! Je moet alleen opletten (aandacht geven), dat sommige Afrikaanse woorden iets anders betekenen of niet bestaan of anders worden gebruikt, ik bedoel vooral woorden als "mos" ,"net" (slegs), "kry", "gesels", "amper" etc. Sukses!
Goed bezig Lindie! Nederlands is mijn moedertaal en ik kon je goed begrijpen, dus ik denk dat je met wat oefening snel comfortabeler wordt in het Nederlands! You definitely did not embarrass yourself and I think this just shows the true learning process of a language (something not many people dare to post)❤

Thank you for posting this raw video! I've been wanting to start my own polyglot channel, but too afraid because of how 'unfluent' I am and how I stumble through making sentences. This video (and reading the comments) has given me hope to make it anyway. We don't have to be perfect when learning a language and showing the authentic side of language learning helps other learners face their fears of speaking as well. Thank you!
Go ahead, make your polyglot channel! A channel documenting the process of becoming a polyglot is just as interesting as a channel showing already polished polyglot skills. Maybe even more interesting. Just be honest about your skill level and invite your viewers along for the journey....

Goeie video! Ek het nog altyd gewonder as 'n Afrikaans sprekende slegs deur "comprehensive input" maklik Nederlands sou kon leer (due to high levels of comprehension). Ek het dit self begin doen, maar toe het Duits my aandag gesteel.
Je deed het zo goed! Ik kon je prima verstaan hoor! En zo leuk om je Nederlands te horen praten! Hier een paar dingen om je te helpen:
‘Difficult’ is ‘Moeilijk’ indeed, not ‘Mogelijk.
When you said ‘Zo..’ you probably meant ‘So..’ in English and for that we use ‘Dus..’
‘Ik wil graag Nederlands proberen te leren’ en ‘Dank je wel voor het kijken naar mijn video’ en ‘Chicken’ is ‘Kip’, so no, you said ‘Kijken’ perfectly!
We actually have 'dus' as 'so' in Afrikaans as well but it's usually used by older people or in very formal settings.

I looked a little bit at your language can you do a video where you tell us the difference between both of these languages cuz they really seem like the same
Dutch is a beautful language. I started learning, and it's much more welcoming for English speakers compare to French or German. But yes, grammar is belangrijk, moellijk (and tricky, I don't know the word for that in Dutch, and forgive me, I am still a beginner hahah)
Not knowing Dutch, I caught one error: "het grammatica" should be "de grammatica" (and I had to look up the spelling). You did great! I've been in a similar situation arriving in Portugal with my bag misplaced and calling "irregularidades em bagagem" (on top of that, their computer was down) or traveling to Prague knowing only Russian.

4:48 this is what I feel learning English( I have been studying it for 2 years) i can think in english but when I speak it I don't pronounce the words so well and I speak slowly like a robot
As an Afrikaans speaker myself, I understood everything. I also have been very fascinated by the Dutch language, but never learned it. My grandparents spoke it. Baie sterkte met die leer van Nederlands. Jy is a groot inspirasie.
Reading and listening to Dutch/Flemish is easy, you understand 90% of it. Speaking it is the hard part.

As a native dutchmen, i think you did pretty well. However there were obviously some pronounciation things and some grammer things that werent quite "normal"
I'm so glad to see a new language video. 🥳 This experiment is really interesting to me even tho I'm not sure how similar or how different Dutch and Akrikaans are since I don't speak them. 🫤

Tbh this is me with Italian, except I just sound like I'm speaking in Spanish. Between French, Spanish and Latin, I can mostly understand Italian but speaking is just so unbelievably hard.

Hadd írjam magyarul, mert egyrészt én magyar vagyok, másrészt te pedig úgyis beszélsz magyarul, ráadásul elég jól. ;) Nem tudom, németül tudsz-e, de szerintem a te anyanyelved, az afrikaans, meg a holland nyelv valahogy úgy viszonyulhat egymáshoz, mint svájci német, amit a svájciak schwitzerdütsch-nek, a németek pedig Schweizer Deutsch-nak mondanak, viszonyul a német irodalmi nyelvhez. Én sokáig azt hittem, hogy a Dél-Afrikai Köztársaságban a német a hivatalos nyelv, hiszen a fővárosának német neve van, már, ha én jól tudom, hogy Dél-Afrika fővárosa Johannesburg. Persze, a Johannesburg név valójában holland eredetű is lehet, mert az is eléggé hasonlít a németre is és az angolra is. Ebből is fakad, hogy az angol feliratnak (is) köszönhetően nagyon sokat értettem abból, amit hollandul mondtál. Volt, amit az angolból, megint mást pedig a németből ismertem fel, amit szintén tanultam még középiskolában, de abból csak érettségim van, angolból viszont középfokú nyelvvizsgám is. Németből valahol a B1 és a B2 között lehetek, angolból a B2 és a C1 között. Ha adhatok egy tippet, néha csinálhatnál esetleg magyarul is videót, mert nagyon kevés külföldi beszél magyarul, jól pedig még kevesebb külföldi beszél magyarul, és szerintem a feliratkozóid között bőven vannak magyarok is. Egyébként Magyarországon van egy olyan, "némileg" pejoratív mondás, amely szerint a holland nyelv úgy alakult ki, hogy a részeg angol tengerész megpróbált németül beszélni, de nem egészen sikerült neki.
I'm shocked how much I can understand with the fact that English is my native language. I know that my city uses "keek" to mean "look at" from the Dutch kijken, but that's the only word I can think of 🤔

Dutch. Afrikaans has simpler grammar than Dutch, and Dutch grammar is already somewhat simpler than German grammar. Overall, the difference between Dutch and Afrikaans is at least ten times smaller than the difference between German and Dutch, however, especially in vocabulary.
Afrikaans til today is based on flemish and dutch, afrikaans borrowed words from German, but is a simplified version of old Netherlandish, never from german.
Don’t overthink it when translating from Afr. To Dutch. You will make mistakes like “het probleem zijn” where it’s just “het probleem IS” or “dat ben heel moeilijk voor mij” where it’s “dat IS heel moeilijk voor mij.
Afrikaans speakers always get thrown off by the “zijn” “ben” but you will only use Ben with IK BEN (I am), JIJ BENT (You are) and other that that never.

If you want to say you're from a certain country (or area), you should say 'Ik kom uit ...' in your case 'Ik kom uit Zuid-Afrika' or 'Ik ben Zuid-Afrikaans'
Belgians do say "Ik ben van België" but we Dutchies don't.

I thought that Afrikaans and Dutch are the same language but different dialects. Some people say that Afrikaans is a Dutch spoke wrong or even a 'kitchen Dutch'. I tried to learn Afrikaans once.
I have the same thing when I try to speak Ukrainian or Belarusian as a Russian speaker. I now learn Belarusian, but I feel like I speak a kinda dialect of Russian. Ukrainian I don’t speak, so I say russian words with ukrainian accent😂

You're way too hard on yourself! If this is you not knowing anything, you'll be speaking fluently in no time. Your accent is already great, you just make a little twist in the word order concerning the verb. No biggie. Good luck!

Lindie, you are very cute and bashful and good at speaking languages, especially Afrikaans and Dutch, which are languages that you love because they are very similar to English, your native language.
Lindie, the phonetics of the Germanic branch is a linear medium tone, this tone has to be maintained, Dutch and other Germanic languages are not linear and regular like Sinitic or Romance languages.
When practicing the pronunciation of these Germanic languages, practice over your mouth without covering your mouth as if you were telling a secret and adjust your voice to a medium tone and flow normally, neither too high nor too low.

In correct Nederlands hoor je die n wel uit te spreken. Maar er zijn gewoon zoveel mensen in Nederland die Nederlands hebben geleerd met een dialect waarin de n aan het eind niet wordt uitgesproken, dat het lijkt alsof hij nooit wordt uitgesproken. In mijn dialect slikken we juist de laatste e van woorden in en spreken we de n wel uit zodat het woord'n wordt.
@@Alicia-zf3nq ja, dat klopt. als buitenlander ben ik meer aan het accent van de randstad gewend. maar ik heb ook gezegd dat ze het niet hoeft te doen en niet dat ze het niet moet doen :) omdat je in het Afrikaans de n niet schrijft of uitspreekt is het misschien gewoon makkelijker voor haar in het begin om het wegtelaten

Ik geloof dat dit een goed voorbeeld is van taalbarrières omdat ik jouw comment deels met de vertaalfunctie van TH-cam moest vertalen om al het Afrikaans te snappen en het daarom verkeerd geïnterpreteerd had. Maar inderdaad, als een dialect een sluipweg kan zijn om een taal gemakkelijker te leren, dan is dat alleen maar goed advies :)
