Yes! I moved from Germany to Switzerland a few years ago, and went from knowing German and a bit of English to knowing German, English, French, Italian and Latin (you are required to take at least two 'national' languages at school for multiple years). Sadly, they're changing the curriculum in grammar schools so as to give mathematics and natural sciences more lesson time, and (myself included) not all students always appreciate learning about, say, the intricacies of French grammar.I still hope that the idiosyncratic linguistic set-up in Switzerland won't disappear altogether, it's kind of cool that things like food labels, our government's website etc. are all in various languages.
my dad didn't pass down german to me or my sister because he was afraid it'd be too confusing but I really wish he had because I've been trying to learn german for the past few years and I'm still struggling lol
It's not always that easy! I have never learnt German from my mum and I have never been able to learn it, it feels like my mind blocks it out or something. I was born in Italy and lived there until I was 3, in that period my mum tried to teach me German, but I always cried when she did that. Then we moved to Spain and, as I had two new languages to learn (Spanish and Catalan), she just dropped German...
Fun fact: Your mama has got a very English accent when she talks Dutch but also still has got that Fries dialect going on. Your next challenge should be the Fries language if you want a real challenge. :')
Fries is actually closer to English and therefor easier to learn for native English speakers. It's actually one of the easiest languages to learn for them! (You can fact check this, it's true)
Not everyone is great in learning languages, and this woman is also very smart. And someone from the uk will have it way more easy to learn the dutch language than someone who speaks arab for example
Aww Jade!! This is so cool, it’s so nice to see how happy your mum is when you speak Dutch!! You’ve inspired me to dig out my German grammar books which I haven’t touched for six months!! 😅
I've been learning Dutch on Duolingo for a while now, mostly for the fun of learning a new language plus it's quite easy since my first language is German. I've been a little more serious about learning Dutch recently so watching these videos is so fun because I actually understand a few things.
Wow, after just one week your Dutch is amazing!!! And reacting to your mum feeling self-conscious about her Dutch skills, I'd say she's still got it! The word order was a bit off here and there, but I kind-a felt that was mainly because she was helping you understand what she was saying by dividing her sentences in smaller pieces.
As a bilingual English/Dutch person, watching this makes me feel so blessed that my parents decided to teach me both languages. Power to you for deciding to learn Dutch! Zet 'm op!
My whole family is Chinese but having been born and raised in the UK, I've really struggled to pick Cantonese up despite having gone to Chinese school and having the language spoken around me my entire life, but my parents mostly speak to me in English and obviously at school I learnt English as my first language. It's actually so embarrassing bc others my age can actually hold convos and I can't🙈 I left Chinese school last yr bc hated it lmao. But now I'm going to try learn it by myself!
Ahh, good luck! I'm not Chinese but I'm learning Cantonese (I have a few videos on my channel ;)). Just get your parents to speak it to you a lot and watch a bunch of TVB HK dramas hahaha Good luck! xx
O gosh, I’m in the exact same situation! I’m Chinese too, but I was born and raised in the Netherlands so my Chinese is pretty rubbish oops :) I could speak Mandarin when I was little but I’ve lost it after going to a Dutch school and only speaking Dutch most of the time. I feel so embarrassed too when I’m not able to speak in Mandarin and I really want to be able to speak the language again. (I hated Chinese school too lol)
i studied dutch at undergrad here in the UK and then did my masters in amsterdam and what I found most helpful for my language was when I got a cafe job to support myself alongside uni! while i was at work i had to switch between english and dutch all day and it did wonders for my more conversational language skills. i definitely recommend trying to immerse yourself in the language at least once a day - even just having it in the background is so helpful in the long term! it’s been 5 and a half years since i started learning dutch and youtube is still one of my go-tos for listening practice (i like disfordazzle’s vlogs). your spoken dutch is already so good and you clearly have great comprehension skills too! keep it up, veel succes! 🇳🇱 l💕
Your mom is right. She translates her English thoughts into Dutch. This is also because we Dutch people like to adapt to people whom speak other languages. Especially in English. I love that your mom is from Friesland and likes Groningen so much! You're doing great, learning Dutch! Keep going!
We’re a trilingual family: English, Dutch and Norwegian, living in Norway. My kids speak Dutch exactly like you! So funny to hear the similarity😊 So even though you say you weren’t brought up bilingual your level is pretty good! Our kids speak Norwegian amongst themselves, English with me and Norwegian/Dutch with their dad. We wanted the kids to be able to talk with their oma. I grew up bilingual myself (English, Dutch) and realised very early on how practical that was. Good luck!
It's absolutely bizarre how well you've managed to teach yourseld Dutch in such a short period of time. I'm Dutch myself and have to say you sound like you've lived in the Netherlands for a long time! Props to you, as I know it's a really complex and confusing language to learn 👏

This is so cool! I love that your mom has the patience to teach you Dutch. She’s precious!! My dad tried to help me with German and quit about 10 minutes in. 😂
Jade, wat is je Nederlands goed! Een tip: vaak kan je de “r” uitspreken op de Franse manier! In plaats van de “r” te rollen, komt hij meer vanuit de keel. The r also has different pronunciations in Dutch depending on where in the word it is, so that’s difficult.. But I figured since you speak French it could be helpful to know!
Dual nationality kid who wasn't raised bilingual here! I'm from a Dutch/French family but wasn't taught any French growing up. I'm really impressed that you managed to learn Dutch so well in such a short amount of time! I only started learning French when I was 19 and now, 12 years on, I've gained a very decent level of fluency. So you got this! Goed gedaan :)
This is so great!!! Glad you were able to learn! I'm actually bilingual (Hebrew and English), and used to be trilingual (I used to speak Nepali when I lived in Nepal) but I lost all of it:( Ive always hoped that when I visit Nepal maybe Nepali would come back to me😂
Aah you sound so great! Don't worry about making mistakes, you sound better than a lot of non-native people who have already been living in the Netherlands for a few years (no shade implied). Any Dutch person will be astonished at how well you already know the language! Tbh no one ever really goes the extra mile to become fluent in Dutch, so we dutchies really appreciate it when someone is trying to learn the language. Even if someone makes the tiniest effort to learn a few words it's already a huge compliment to us! So don't be embarrassed about mistakes, you're doing great and it's part of the process! ^-^

Utrecht! Yeah!!! My city, my town. You speak well, though! And I recognize what your mum is saying about having to translate from English to Dutch. When I worked in the UK and the US (no more than a year in end), I realized I started to think in English as well. And when I got back, I fumbled in Dutch quite a lot the first 3 or 4 weeks. It felt like me switching to German, it takes a few weeks and then it all clicks again. But having that experience with your native language is weird. I’m amazed that my cousin has lived in Iowa for almost 40 years and teaches creative writing in English comes over every other year and speaks perfectly Dutch still. Where I after a 2 times one year was messing up grammar.

I find myself doing the same since I lived in the UK when I was little and am now doing a bachelor's degree that's taught fully in English. So, like your mum said, I end up having weird sentence structures sometimes. It's kinda funny to recognise the thought process. Keep up the good work! It’s so weird going to countries like Switzerland, we in England generally only can speak English but in Switzerland they can speak 4!
Yessss! And Belgium! So much respect 👏
@@UnJadedJade I'm half swiss and I noticed that dutch sounds so much like swiss german 😆
which languages do they speak? I know they speak french and german. right?
UnJaded Jade In Belgium we learn Dutch, English, French and German
As somebody who is IN LOVE with all the stuff related to languages, I loved this video.
I actually never get why a parent wouldn't pass down their own language
@Mike yea absolutely and not just that, it's great for the kid later on, no matter the language
Well it’s not like a physical object or an heirloom that you can easily just pass down to someone🙄
I agree
my dad didn't pass down german to me or my sister because he was afraid it'd be too confusing but I really wish he had because I've been trying to learn german for the past few years and I'm still struggling lol
You literally speak dutch better then a lot of foreign people who’ve been living here for years
Not everyone is great in learning languages, and this woman is also very smart. And someone from the uk will have it way more easy to learn the dutch language than someone who speaks arab for example
to be fair though it's specific, selective sentences. she's said her grammer needs more work.
this is super impressive in just a week!! keep at it and keep refreshing what you've already learned :) x
But now I'm going to try learn it by myself!
i know this seems random,,, but i can help if you need some. i'm raised in hk and only came to the uk a year ago,, so yeah. nonetheless, good luck :)
idek ahaha thank you!
Ahh, good luck! I'm not Chinese but I'm learning Cantonese (I have a few videos on my channel ;)). Just get your parents to speak it to you a lot and watch a bunch of TVB HK dramas hahaha Good luck! xx
Guresu thanks!! I’ve got some HK dramas on my list and I’ll check out some of your videos too!
I hear a little bit of: "postbode siemen". That was an old show on the dutch television. I love that your speaking Dutch so good!
zaai
i studied dutch at undergrad here in the UK and then did my masters in amsterdam and what I found most helpful for my language was when I got a cafe job to support myself alongside uni! while i was at work i had to switch between english and dutch all day and it did wonders for my more conversational language skills. i definitely recommend trying to immerse yourself in the language at least once a day - even just having it in the background is so helpful in the long term! it’s been 5 and a half years since i started learning dutch and youtube is still one of my go-tos for listening practice (i like disfordazzle’s vlogs). your spoken dutch is already so good and you clearly have great comprehension skills too! keep it up, veel succes!
I love the close bond you have between your mum and your whole family. This video really brighten my day, and I’m very thankful for it ❤️
Side note by I love how Jade looks like a little school girl in this video - so cute!
Being an Indian, I do not have any connections to the British or Dutch. Neither do I understand what your mum spoke! But, somehow, I watched the whole video without skipping even a second☺️ Just loveee you. Loveliest human being you are. So down to earth and cute. SUBSCRIBED❤️
🇳🇱: Als een Nederlander wil ik een groot compliment geven. Ik vind het heel knap van je dat je al zo goed Nederlands kan spreken binnen een week. Ik doe je het zeker niet na en ik vind je erg duidelijk. Respect naar jou!
This is so cool! I love that your mom has the patience to teach you Dutch. She’s precious!! My dad tried to help me with German and quit about 10 minutes in. 😂
the way she said "weet ik wel" sounded like a true dutchie
Yeah! And when she said "oh leuk, goed hoor". It sounded SO Dutch!!
hanne or when she said “goeden morgen”
Dat klonk echt tata, mooi ❣️
Jade, wat is je Nederlands goed! Een tip: vaak kan je de “r” uitspreken op de Franse manier! In plaats van de “r” te rollen, komt hij meer vanuit de keel.
The r also has different pronunciations in Dutch depending on where in the word it is, so that’s difficult.. But I figured since you speak French it could be helpful to know!
Also depending on which part of the country!
Wie vind het ook dat Jade op een paar dagen heel goed nederlands kan!
I'm actually bilingual (Hebrew and English), and used to be trilingual (I used to speak Nepali when I lived in Nepal) but I lost all of it:( Ive always hoped that when I visit Nepal maybe Nepali would come back to me😂
Yesss it's so helpful being immersed! I hope to live in The Netherlands some day ✨
omg!!! I grew up trillingual with Nepali, Polish, and English and I lost my Nepali as well :((
How did you learn so much so quickly?
You were really good, I could even understand a bit (I'm german).😁😊
Dutch sounds quite similar to German, I actually understood some of it!!
Same!!
Same! It's so confusing because some things are basically the same in German and then some bits are completely different!!
im quite surprised that i could understand as German is my second language
Same! I was twice in Amsterdam and i could understand so much.
Kishor Khakhar Tbh I only know English and I feel like I understood some too 🤣😭
Aah you sound so great!
4:10 really good pronunciation! Just really Dutch! Keep up the good work
i’m so excited for this second video! i think this was such an interesting idea (+ as someone who is bad with languages this has been unfathomable to me 😂). Thank you for always producing such amazing content Jade! 💖💖
I'm literally in your position right now, my dad is German and I was born in Germany. But I guess I forgot speaking it, a little bit. Your video encouraged me. I'm going to try to learn German again. Thank you so much. By the way I love watching your videos❤
I’m learning German too, bc I have a friend that is from Austria :)
“You have to speak slowely”
“Yeah yeah yeah will do”
*speaks super duper fast* hahahah
Je hebt het super goed gedaan voor enkel 1 week!
Utrecht!
Where I after a 2 times one year was messing up grammar.
i'm also learning dutch, it's been almost two years and i think i'm a B1 level, she is already so good and i'm jealous 😭 i also watched wie is de mol 2019 btw it's so weird that she watched it too
Goed bezig! Blijf oefenen. Ik weet niet waar jij vandaan komt maar mensen die Engels spreken als moeder taal kunnen makkelijker Nederlands leren.

Hey, I am from Belgium ( the dutch speaking part) and I think that you did really good.
Even I have sometime problems with the tenses in dutch (espescially the past tense), so I would say well done!
keep learning and "veel succes en ik vind je video's super leuk en inspirerend!"
voltooid deelwoorden zijn een pain in the ass man
Wow your Dutch is so good already! Impressive!
It's also quite funny to hear you literally translate from English sometimes. I find myself doing the same since I lived in the UK when I was little and am now doing a bachelor's degree that's taught fully in English. So, like your mum said, I end up having weird sentence structures sometimes. It's kinda funny to recognise the thought process.
Keep up the good work! Hats off to you cause I hear from many people that Dutch isn't particularly easy to learn!
I'm watching this video for the 3rd or 4th time I think (the previous times a long time ago), I've now been learning Dutch for a while and understood almost everything I'm so happy!
I started following you about 6 years ago and my English was still very basic, it took me all those years to understand your "Let's chat" videos and now you're teaching me one more language 🤍
Good job! If you keep it up you'll be fluent in no time. If your mam's from Friesland though... you should give Frisian a go. Much cooler!
Miskien kinst wol begripe of net.

Its really cool to hear you pick up the Fryslan “r” from your mum! Thats a real advantage because I feel a lot of british people struggle with that sound.
TH-cam's algorithm brought me here, but as a Dutch person, i really like your challenge! It was fun to see you and your mom interacting and I feel you learned the language rather quick. It sounds good! Also, Esmee's switch between her Dutch accent and her British pronunciation are WORLDS apart. Props to her for that.
lol love how I understood their entire conversation just because I'm German

😂 Me being amazed of how Jade's a carbon copy of her mother for 10 minutes
This legit sounds like Afrikaans. Not much of a difference actually
Afrikaans is derived from dutch!
There's a huge difference tho. Maybe it's just me but I have to focus really really hard to understand Afrikaans. I can understand what Germans are saying relatively well without trying too hard. Kinda weird since Afrikaans was basically born out of Dutch while German is an entirely different language.
