2007-2012 Ford Mondeo 2 0 TDI fuel filter change

  • This is my first attempt to change a fuel filter on my Mk4 2008 Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDI. You will need to purchase a diesel hand pump (about £7) and some clear plastic pipe to prime the fuel lines after replacing the filter. It's a little more difficult than doing a Mk3 where if you fill the new filter with fuel the engine will start first time.

    Hi Nigel, great video. One thing for future ford fuel filter changes is NEVER rev the engine. Doing so uses fuel in the lines and pump before it has time to bleed up from the tank. Theres a good chance the system will self prime if you dont rev on starting. Thats how we did it any way. But great video. Many thanks :)

    Great stuff Nigel, thank you very much for your tutorial!! I have read every possible instruction available online but only your video made me brave enough to actually do it. Along with Ben Clarkson's tip on priming the system (disconnecting return pipe with blue clip and priming the filter directly) worked a treat. Thank you both!

    Tried this method today Nigel and it worked a treat. I found it helpful to leave the vacuum pump connected after priming in case more was needed (which it was), just have a fair sized bucket to catch the return line fuel when the engine is running as quite a bit of fuel comes through.

    Your video helped me last time, it's time again and I found your vidoe again! Remember now that I last time used the pump I used to drain engine oil with, that worked fine, maybe a tip from me. Thanks for your help.

    Thanks for the comments.This was the end of a major service. I'd already changed the other filters, including the pollen which is also tricky, and brake pads. I'd been saving doing the fuel filter as I admit it worried me the most and I couldn't find a TH-cam to help. There's nothing worse when you can't start your car after messing about.

    Hi Nigel really found your video useful. When I did this job recently, I didn't bother with the drain plug, it's just something else that can break or leak. I just slightly loosened the filter housing, held a bucket up right underneath the filter and drained it this way. You are right about bleeding the system, if you don't bleed the system it will run for about 10 seconds and then die! I used a fluid extractor to pull diesel from the tank. I broke into the return line at a green clip under the bonnet near the offside wing. A few pumps and it will pull diesel from the tank.CAUTION, be careful with this clip it is easily broken. To disconnect the green return line clip, carefully prise up the centre part of the clip, it does not fully remove. Then PUSH down on the outside part of the clip, and the line should release easily, without any problem. Keep up the good work, I really enjoyed your video on Forscan.

    Great video, helped prepare me for the job. The hand pump seemed a bit tricky so I opted for a vacuum cleaner hose attached to a jam jar with a tyre valve connection to the schrader valve near the fuel pump on my 140bhp diesel (details in other posts). The clear pipe in the fuel circuit to the valve shows if any air is left. Also decided not to try to drain the filter housing as others say it just syphons straight out of the fuel tank. Just split the filter housing and take care to catch spillage in a washing bowl. The vacuum cleaner was fast and efficient and I pulled about half a litre through the into the jam jar. Even so, there was a heart stopping moment when the car seemed to refuse to start. Took a bit of cranking but got there eventually.

    Thanks for the comment. I did try a Ford Focus timing belt once. It's a very tricky procedure as the bottom pulley is not locked to the crankshaft. You need special tools to lock the overhead cam shafts and the pistons at the correct timing before torque tightening the bottom pulley bolt. In short I don't want to do another one again.

    The method of turning the ignition on and off is only effective if there is a pump in the fuel tank, on the other hand for future reference I find it easier just to disconnect the fuel line from the filter to the engine/injector pump and just pump fuel through with the diesel filter primer until it comes out the primer then connect the fuel line and do a quick start rather than pumping it through the return. There will still be fuel in the rail and around that area but if there was any air there it would bleed through the injectors while cranking anyway.

  • @knebworth1986

    Just a couple of things. First of all turning the ignition on and off will not work on the partucular engine you were working on. That only works on vehicles fitted with an electric fuel pump. Also there is a much easier way to bleed the system. On the right hand side of the engine as you look at it, there is a valve exactly the same as a car tyre valve on the fuel line. Simply connect a syringe type pump to the this valve and draw the fuel up from the tank until no air bubbles can be seen. The car will start first turn of the key.

      @knebworth1986 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I no longer have the car so can't photograph it. If you remove the plastic cover over the top of the engine. You should be able to trace the fuel lines which go across the front of the engine and then up the right hand side as you look at it. One of the lines has the valve on it with a dust cap just the same as a car tyre valve. The lines are easily seen. They are close to the top of the engine next to the high pressure fuel pump

    • @knebworth1986
      @knebworth1986 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joe, as soon as the seal is broken on the fuel filter housing, the suction on the fuel in the tank is lost and it will remain in the tank. It will not drain away with gravity because the fuel pick up is above the level of the fuel in the tank. Same principal as syphoning

      I don't know. Best to check with Ford.
      The Mondeos have either a filter in the engine bay or at the back by the fuel tank. If in the engine bay then you can fill the new one with diesel and swap it in. If it is at the back then you will need to bleed the lines. I think your car has a diesel particle filter which is different again.

    Hi Nigel
    Great video.I have an 11 plate mondeo tdci which has been in the garage for weeks.At first he told me it was the fuel pump spring which they charged £840.The second day I got it back the same thing happened again,so i took it back but they are now telling me that it's the fuel pump in the tank that needs replacing and the fuel lines,but speaking to other people regarding this issue who tell me that model does not have a fuel pump in the tank do you know if this is true also I'm wondering if it can be something as simple as the fuel filter.It starts without any issues but when I'm accelerating esp in low gears and uphill the car kind of pulls back and if I continue accelerating it cuts out.I am on the verge of scrapping this car as I just cant seem to get to the bottom of it and I am not forking out hundreds of pounds for nothing.Any info greatly appreciated mate.

    • @NigelEaland
      @NigelEaland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt. I can’t say for sure but on my 2008 there is no fuel pump in the tank. It works by sucking the fuel and the pump is on the engine. If there are any fuel line leaks between the fuel tank and the engine air bubbles get in to the fuel or if the fuel filter is blocked will result in fuel starvation. You can see the air bubbles through the plastic fuel line if they are there. See my video for poor starting as it might help you diagnose. Good luck.

    What do you mean by priming the pipes with Diesel? Did you pour diesel down the return line where you connected the hose for the primer bulb?

    • @NigelEaland
      @NigelEaland  ปีที่แล้ว

      Priming the pipe means to draw the diesel through from the tank and to get rid of the air in the line. You suck it through using the hand pump.

      @BlakeCDS ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NigelEaland Yes I understand, but at the end of the video when you said priming the pipes with diesel helped to suck the air out, did you pour fresh diesel down into the return line? Thanks. My Mk4 is due it's filter changed and I'm a little worried about not being able to start it.

      @@BlakeCDS ah I understand. I think I didn’t explain myself well. No I did not pour diesel up the return pipe. What I did was to put diesel into the bowl and then put the hand pump outlet into it to stop any air returning as I pumped. My impression is that you suck mainly air but the feed pipe draws the diesel. Eventually my hand pump was crushed by the vacuum it created. I then reconnected the return pipe and the car started and ran.

      @@NigelEaland okay I get you, thanks for the replies. My plan is to brim the tank beforehand, and put diesel in the filter bowl to help things along as much as possible.

      @@BlakeCDS good call. I had a tank full as well. The Mazda mx5 really does not go wrong. The Mondeo has had a few problems but I love them both. One is for fun and the other is a workhorse. Good luck with the filter. It’s pretty straight forward and even if the engine stalls it will be clearing the air out the lines. Repeat the process and all will be good. Make sure the bleed valve on the filter is fully closed and the filter housing tight with no air leaks before you start pumping.

      The mk3 is in the engine compartment, left side at the back. Mk4 is just in front of the fuel tank under the car. Try and identify the fuel lines at the engine and follow them back.

    well in theory if it has an electric fuel pump the first method should work. The electric pump starts pumping fuel and should fill the filter once you turn on the key a couple of times. Another method which I used when changing the fuel filter on a diesel passat was to spray a bit of deodorant into the admission.. that was enough to get the engine running .

      Sì, devi sanguinare la linea. La pompa del carburante aspira il diesel al motore. Se c'è aria, perde aspirazione e il gasolio non arriva. Google translate è mio amico. Grazie per la visione.

    Re the first method to prime the fuel lines - it should work if you fill the cap with clean diesel before you screw it back on

    • @NigelEaland
      @NigelEaland  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did fill the cap as you can see in the video. Unfortunately the body of the filter housing has enough air to cause a problem. So I used the suction method to clear the air.
      On a mk3 the diesel filter is in the engine compartment. When I changed one I filled it with fuel and the engine started and didn’t need priming.

      @@NigelEaland Sorry, missed that bit - it could be (I stand corrected) that the one you have doesn't have electric diesel pump? Hence the first method didn't work?

    • @NigelEaland
      @NigelEaland  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      robertgral The Mondeo does not have a diesel pump pushing from the fuel tank end. If it did then it would prime itself. The fuel pump in the engine effectively sucks the fuel from the tank. If there is a lot of air in the line it locks and you need to bleed the line. Thanks for your comments and interest.

      I pretty sure I bought a laser diesel hand pump and I think the pipe was 8mm. Pop off the return connection as shown in the video and measure it. You can buy the pump on Ebay or Amazon. www.lasertools.co.uk/product/3813

      Fuel starvation symptoms are poor starting, rough idling, poor acceleration and poor fuel economy. Change the filter. If you don't have all or some of these symptoms then another cause for poor starting from cold is glow plug failure.

    Wrong, wrong and wrong...First of all This model doesn't have an electric pump that pulls fuel. 2nd you should connect the hand pump, from the other pipe! which comes from the fuel filter. The one that you used is from return, this means you are trying to pull fuel from the injection pump, totally wrong, not impposible but this is a hard thing to do. How many hours did you try to pull out fuel from the return pipe? Next time try the other pipe, you will see how fast you will fill the filter again...

      Thanks for your comment. As I said in the video it was my first attempt and I was testing out the methods I had read about on the internet. Using the return certainly works and so is not wrong and only required a few minutes of pumping to clear the air all the way to the pump. There have been a few alternative methods suggested in previous comments and I’ll try yours next time.
