    NOTE: Many of you all probably know that Aputure has the Sidus Link you can now purchase to be able to remotely control all lights from their app. The Sidus Link was not available nor even announced at the making of this video, thus why it is not mentioned and I gave Aputure a con on that one. So they are now even in the app realm! :D

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, some may consider that I mention Aputure having fan noise as a con. The point being made was not that the fan noise is unbearable but rather Aputure has something that Godox does not. Since Godox is silent completely due to no fans, it does mean that since Aputure has fans that there will be fan noise regardless of how loud that may be. Hope that clears up confusion :D

    Usually before purchasing something I would watch a couple of reviews, this time I watched just one. Whatever the subject maybe, the clarity and precision you have articulated through these contents, they are able to connect with the audience as if there is no barrier. I think that's art. I like that this videon feels less biased, the other comparisons on your channel indicated that you are probably more of a godox fan ;-) I think in the end the most important question is: Does your use of the light justify paying the aputure price? If filming is a hobby, it is probably not worth it. If you make your living from it, it might be worth it. You pay for the brand, but you also pay for more convenience, more options and the good customer support. Besides preferences I really appreciate the amount of work you put into your videos, keep going :-)

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, glad to hear that! And yes, I do believe what you plan on using a light for would perhaps justify why you buy one over the other. It's all about needs. Not everyone needs what one piece of gear offers. That's why I try to encourage people to understand that me, or anyone else, recommending a light does not automatically mean you need it. There's got to be a moment where you determine if that piece of gear fits the needs you have. :D And I'm glad you enjoy the videos! Thanks so much for watching and commenting

    Great review! I give props to Aputure for making LED lights much more mainstream, but when you're on a budget I've had great success with Godox lights. Our studio recently bought 4 vl150's and they're awesome! Only run them at about 60-75% and takes almost 2 hours for the fans to even come on, at which time our studio tends to be on the warm side, about 75-78 degrees F. The fan noise is so minimal even when standing directly by the light. Also they come with a remote, case, and most listings have them with barn doors. The only problem I've had is can't get the app to work properly on an iPhone XR, app locks up when connecting.

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a weird issue with the app.... sadly I can't help since I don't have the specific phone. :/ I'm happy to hear you love the VL150's! The VL series is a great series, so happy to see Godox improving their lights so much!

It sees the 3 lights I have on, setting up for a shoot here shortly, but after I connect all the functions are just greyed out and all the channel boxes, A-F, are greyed out with a "pause" symbol on them. Oh well, neat feature, I'll probably tinker some more and do some research to try and figure it out.

    Depending on the technology used in the LED, the LED can shift to either of four directions, so CTO, CTB, Plus or Minus Green. It is to be noted that usually such happens to building/interior lighting, which works virtually 24/7 in moist and UV rich conditions. I would not worry too much about it, as people rarely treat their video lights this way and it is more likely that if you sell 120d II in say 10 years, new owner would be able to change the LED at the service. What I really doubt here is whether we will have our world in 10 years, cause lights will survive just well

    Fantastic comparison that I was looking for! I thought the 120d II had app control through the Sidus Link

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Aputure Sidus Link Bridge wasn't yet out at the making of this video, and prior to that only the Aputure Nova and MC could be controlled with the app ( at least to my knowledge and when I was testing it out). I could be wrong, or things may have changed, but at the time of the video that was the info I had.

    FYI *Heat* is total energy, *temperature* is how "hot" it gets. So 2 lights that both use 150w will by definition put out roughly the same amount of HEAT into a room, even if their TEMPERATURES are different. A fan disperses the heat into the room more - but the room will heat up the same amount overall with both lights.

    Thank you for doing the side by side, on my end I 100 percent like the aputure better for your skin tones. Perhaps is the 3-4 point higher CRI... The godox has you leaning toward purple which looks cheap, video, blah. Could be differences in monitors... but the aputure looks so real and perfect, you have a healthy, natural tan on your arms and face. It's so much better I'm convinced I need to spend over 2 times the price for aputure. The question is, did you use the same diffuser in that shot 8:25 ? did you keep all other variables the same? same camera, lens, white balance, etc? Sorry if you already mentioned this, perhaps I scrubbed through this video too quick...

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree that the colors there don't look the greatest, sadly this is not on the part of the video but on TH-cam. TH-cam has some pretty bad color accuracy lately and has oversaturated all their videos it seems. So it's not the best representation unfortunately. But everyone does have their own tastes I suppose. And yes, everything was exactly the same (camera settings, dome, etc.).

    I'm late to watching this video, but good info as always! My first 'real' light is on the way (VL150). I was trying to decide between Aputure and Godox. Once I started to get lights, I wanted to stay in the same family for apps and remotes.
    One issue with Godox is they have so many lines I keep getting confused about which one I wanted. They just came out with an ML 60 (another new category) that looks intersting, but I have not seen any reviews on that one yet. Godox should send you some lights, or perhaps a local store could give you free rentals if you give them a shout out.

    Such a great review - thank you! I am a still photographer just starting out offerring short 1-3 minutes branding videos for my clients as well. I am looking for a video light and I use both for a food/product photography as well as for a bit of video work. I am tempted by the Godox ML60 - first of all due to price and portability. Also, the ability to set up a light in tight spaces sounds temping with the ML60. On the other hand, what's keeping me from the 150, 200 or 300 w is the huge size and higher price.

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I can get where you're coming from. I will say the ML60 is amazing, one of my favorite. UL150 is a second favorite due to it being a good light that is totally silent. Hope you can find the one that fits you soon!

      @@FellowFilmmaker Thank you! SO, I am (as I mentioned) a still photographer just starting out offerring short 1-3 minutes branding videos for my clients as well. I am looking for a video light I can use both for a food/product photography (as a supplement to my strobes: Godox AD600 + AD200). Question 1: Do you think this newer ML60 will be powerful enough to help me make short branding videos - could be a ceramist working in different spots in her workspace - some close ups, some takes further away, but typically not far away in a huge room. I would like to be able to make a bit of slowmotion but this will typically be very close to the subject so I could bring the light close to it. Question 2: Would the SL150ii be a better choice you think (I will get no batteries but more os less same price for 2,5 times power - keeping in mind I would of course prefer portability but of also need enough power)? Thank you a lot in advance - very great video from you 🙏🏻

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the ML60 is a great light and versatile enough to be used in the situation you mentioned. It won't, however, be a super soft light if you use the small modifier I show in the video review I did on the light. You'd need something a bit bigger to pull that off. As far as getting something brighter, it could be helpful if you think you'll be in need of more power, especially if you're trying to get a super soft look and need to go through many layers of diffusion or need to soften a larger space. Hope that makes sense.

    Thanks for the review. I know this might be a bit esoteric, but it would also be good to know about RF noise. Meaning, when you are using the remote, or if you have your mic cables near the light, will your audio get RF interference? (Obviously, having higher quality XLR cables and well-shielded recorders will have an impact, but it seems that RF noise is something that isn't really looked in to.)

    Thank you for the videos it helped me already a lot! :)
    I watched this and the "Godox SL-60w VS Godox VL300 - Which video light to use?"
    I have some more questions about the Godox UL150 and Godox VL300:
    1. Is there more difference than power?
    2. And what would you use for an interview situation with two people?
    3. What is the difference?
    4. And what kind of light set up would you do? (How many lights?)
    5. Do you also photoshoots with these lights?
    It would help me a lot. Hopefully, you have time to answer. :)
    Best greetings

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good questions :D Main difference is the power and then the control units/power adapters are different sizes and weights. Also the UL150 is totally silent while the VL300 has fans and some fan noise, not a ton but you can hear it if you're close enough. If I'm interviewing two people at once I'd likely use the UL150 and a big softbox. I'd use the VL300 if I were to interview more than two at once. I'd use a two point lighting setup, so a keylight and a rim light. You can do photoshoots with these, but they do not flash. They are just continuous light. If you need a strobe you'd be looking at the Godox FV200 light.

      Thank you for answering so quickly and in detail, it helps a lot.
      I am currently planning a light constellation that should work for both portrait photos and video recordings such as interviews. With a flash you get more light output and can freeze movements. I'm just thinking that I'll need this less. Hmmm I have to reconsider that.
      In the interview with more people, are these two keylights and two rim lights? Or in total? Do you already have a video of that set up? :D
      In any case, thank you very much! ^^

    Great video, thanks for making it. I'm trying to decide what light to upgrade up from the Godox 60. I just need more punch through my extra large softbox with the egg crate on it. What other lights do you have that you were referring to at the end of the video that you can use for when you need effects or more fine tuning options?

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lights I would use for fine tuning or effects are not large lights like the ones I review here, so they probably wouldn't be helpful. Honestly a good all around light is the Aputure 300dmkii, I really enjoyed that light with all it offers.

    Hopefully this is helpful for a lot of people but if the 120d II and the UL 150 were the same price at say 300ish USD which would you personally go for?
    Also the UL150 II and a few godox lights have just been released - I hope they'll let you highlight them and send them to you for review as I'd love a look! (and new amaran lights too).

    1:14 - natively sure, but you can still connect the Aputure to Sidus link with a bridge.
    5:13 - The Aputure has fan noise, but you can only hear it from 1 - 2" away.. so how is that a problem?
    Watched to the end to discover the obvious that you're biased towards the Godox light. Maybe you should have led with that since its not an unbiased comparison at all.

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the time of making this video Sidus Link was not available nor even really known about. And to your point on being biased, the point made was that comparatively the Aputure has fan noise since the Godox has none at all. The point was not that Aputure is not a useful light, but that in comparison it's got something the other does not. So no, it's not biased, but thanks for watching. :)

      I use a Think Tank Production Manager 50 (I've got a video on that here on the channel), but that might be a bit overkill for just two lights. If you wanted something smaller but with room for other things, then the Production manager 40 or maybe 30 would be good (look into the sizes on those to be sure). Think Tank is by far the highest quality bags and cases you'll find out there, take a look and see if that works for you: bit.ly/32MlFSu Otherwise, I'm not sure what would work with the lights, as I just use my Manager 50 case! :D

    I am not sure if it is correct to tell the magenta shift when not using a special spectrometer, and again, the calibration on said spectrometer is responsible for what is closer to neutral light. Graphs from camera capture may shift depending on the sensor and is not really making any point. One time we had a spectrometer on a set was just a headache as no lights matched, yet the difference was unnoticeable.

I believe that in another one of your videos you said that the Aputure fresnel lens does not work well with Godox lights. .The Godox looks really attractive, but I can imagine that occasionally I might want the fresnel capability. 2) How big a problem is the fan noise in the Aputure in practical situations? It seems like a lot of filmmakers use them successfully. So it must not be too big a problem?

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the Aputure fresnel works on the Godox SL60w I have but not any of the VL Godox lights I have. Just doesn't have a good effect. Currently I've not found a fresnel that works for them. Hoping Godox comes out with one soon. Great review, Heather. I see you're becoming a bit less partial about the Aputure vs Godox (with still a small preference for Godox it seems ;) ).
    Anyway, I think, and that's my personal thoughts here, that for any filmmaker who has security at heart during a shoot, a lamp getting really warm such as the Godox is an absolute NO GO on set. It's potentially dangerous, and on top of that, manipulating lights a lot here and there on the set makes it annoying if I have to be careful about this. I would also add that the fan noise of the Aputure 120d MKII has never been a problem for anyone because it's just not audible when you record something or someone so... a none issue 99.9% of the time.

      Working with hot lamps safely is an important part of a film crew’s skillset. From the review it sounds like the heat from this light is still less than even the dimmest tungsten lamp, so I’m a little bit confused about why this would be a “no go”. Every grip/electrician should have a pair of hothand gloves, so it’s really not a problem.
