I think this is proof that not all franchises need to be cinematic universes. Just make the best possible movie that best compliments the main character; with the right tone, mood, themes, color palette, etc. I'd happily forego team ups/crossovers if it means getting the best adaptions of individual characters. Unless there's another Kevin Feige level producer out there that can make a DCEU work.

@John Mitcheltree That is definitely an issue. I'm excited to see how Feige will adapt the X-Men down the road, but I also fear that it will get diluted in order to fit into the MCU. You give up one thing in order to have the other. Maybe, if The Batman is successful, this will get DC back on track and they'll offer a great alternative to what Marvel is delivering.
@@philstrouble2284 You're right. The MCU always draws me in. I'm all for a DC universe, but the one they've got now doesn't gel well and such. If I had to pick, I'd choose better adapted individual films over trying to duplicate what Marvel has, which so far hasn't been matched yet by any studio. Here's hoping for a brighter future for DC!
I mean technically this is an universe but it’s just gonna be Reeves’ batverse cos we have the Batman 2, the penguin and Arkham shows

The entire MCU has literally 1 good movie, the first Ironman. It's like Disney saw that movie, bought the Marvel franchise and copied its style/tone as a template for the dozens of other 'MCU' movies to follow. I can't get into a franchise where it's the same exact movie every single time, just with a different actor and different character names....same plot, same tone, same paper-thin character development, same abuse of CGI effects to cover the poor writing. If there's ever a time machine invented, I'm going back and aborting the entire MCU.
I really wish this was the first movie in the new DC cinematic universe.

Got a feeling these will be there own separate trilogy not connected to anything else like the Nolan movies. Seeing as Batgirl and Robin seem to be appearing in other movies I think this will stay as a solo Batman thing.
It never made sense to me why they didn’t just replace Batfleck in the dceu with this

The score in this movie was absolutely top notch, set the tone consistently throughout the entire thing. It worked so well to set my mood the entire movie that I wasn't even disapointed when i realised I'd just been listening to the same 4 chords from Somethings in the way for like 170 minutes.
IMO the ending was beautiful. The real issue I had was the bridge between 2nd to 3rd act. It lost me with the pacing when they were trying to develop Bruce more and focusing on the "big reveal" (which I agree, wasn't much of a shocker). But the way they picked it up for the finale sequence....chills.
Yeah, the steam was bit lost for me in the last act. I was shivering through the first act though!
See now this is why I have been subscribed for almost a decade. I have said it time and time again, your professionalism and ability towards a project and property that is so beloved by you personally, and still you can see through some of the cracks and the movies flaws is remarkable. You are always so fair and honest about your opinions and it's so amazing to see that growth in not only subscribers, but in how well written these reviews are. I personally cannot wait to see the movie tomorrow evening and now that I know some of the things you said, I have lowered my expectations just a tiny bit, but I am sure I will enjoy it more now *because* I know these things. Which is one of the main reasons I keep coming back over the years. It's a good day to be both a BTT and Batman fan.
I just want to see a live action Court of Owls. I'd be happy if that's where this new Batman story goes. I was indifferent about this movie but the reviews I've seen have praised it so much, I'm interested now.

I've been watching Zoe Kravitz movies all week to get ready to see her as Catwoman. Just watched Kimi and Gemini this past weekend. I am so glad you enjoyed her performance, makes me super excited and hopeful she'll get her own spin off.

I'm from Seattle and I have a friend that was an extra for the parts they filmed here, so I had some good thoughts already, but I think she does a great job, it's definitely a COVID movie, in the sense that you can tell they had some restrictions, but I think the acting was all well done, the plot itself kind of got lost for me, but I enjoyed it!
Just saw the movie, and I gotta say, I really agree with Grace. First two hours are pure Batman perfection. The last leg is weak by comparison, and it definitely becomes a “comic book movie” in a way that’s fine but not as great.

I knew from the moment Matt Reeves was attached and spoke about his detective neo-noir vision for the movie, that this was gonna be the Batman I've been waiting to be made for so long and judging by these fucking stellar reviews, he didn't dissapoint and managed to deliver yet another deliberately crafted masterpiece.
Just bought my ticket for a night screening on thursday night in Dublin. Theaters seem full in the city. It's so soothing to hear great stuff about the movie from you Grace, fingers crossed for the dark knight.
It’s always fun to watch Graces review and frame her tastes against mine than extrapolate how I will most likely feel
I remember so many of my friends who are fans of DC having second thoughts when Robert Pattinson was first confimed as batman. I did too. But I'm so happy that he did such a great job(based on this review) because I truly believe that DC fans deserve that level of satisfaction.

@@el34glo59 Exactly it doesn't make sense because Nirvana is grunge music and never emo. But i heard other reviewers using similar phrases like "emo Nirvana Batman" like Grace is implying with the "emo 90's music" because i heard they say this Nirvana song was played like twice in the movie and at the ending scene along with the credit too.
Matt Reeves idea by using the song was probably to convey the idea this batman portrayal might be emo but lives in the dirty grunge Gotham city.

I often disagree with Grace but I love watching her reviews. She’s like the new Siskel/Ebert for me. I didn’t agree with them all the time either. But Grace knows her films just like they did and she presents her info and research so well.
Thank you for another banger Grace. I’m so excited for this movie. I’ve been waiting a long time for this. Me & you are two of the biggest Batman fans I know. Through all this hype you’ve kept my expectations in line. But knowing that you loved most of it is literally making me jump around my room like a toddler. I’m so excited now 😆😆
I didn't intend to watch this movie in theaters, in fact I was ready to let it pass entirely but now I feel like I'd me missing something. I'm getting my tickets today, hopefully I can get weekend tickets. Consider this the result of good word of mouth. Great review!

You always need to point out negatives in a review, if not it’s not a true review. And if you really listen you can tell how much Grace loves this movie and how the positives greatly weigh out the negatives- so when a load of people come after her for one comment she made i’m gonna be pissed.
Man I’ve been waiting on this review. Grace gives the good, the bad and the ugly in the reviews so when it’s positive review it makes my anticipation for this film even higher
As someone who's read both DC and Marvel for 4 decades I just fundamentally disagree with the "DC has always been darker" take. That's a relatively new shift in tone from DC and it's IMO been a major contributor to the ever shrinking DC readership. The primary difference between Marvel and DC for the overwhelming majority of my experience was that DC's heroes were presented like Gods while Marvel focused more strongly on the flawed human behind the iconic hero identity. IMO the best of DC has always leaned into hope and inspiration and the tilt towards Edgelord "dark" toned material has actually harmed their brand long term (admittedly not as much as their hideous business and marketing strategies but still...)

@@shubhradipdas7189 I'm not sure where you got the idea that I wanted Super Friends in live action or for DC to copy Marvel's tone since Inever said anything remotely like that. But the "corny" you're referencing isn't actually representative of DC's less dark and edgy content.
Thank you!! This whole narrative (often put forward by TH-camrs and podcasters) that DC is the “Dark” brand is completely untrue throughout most comics history. DC was always about the bright, primary colours, god-like, perfect super heroes. (IE Superman, Wonder Woman, flash, etc) whereas marvel was the more down to earth, flawed gritty universe. Their heroes have issues. (IE Wolverine, Tony Stark, daredevil, etc). Batman was the exception. He is a dark character. But otherwise, DC is mostly bright and hopeful. This “Dark DC” narrative started when the dark knight came out in 2008, and everyone started saying DC should be dark. This was further perpetuated by Snyder’s movies. So now, everyone thinks DC is dark and gritty, in actuality it was always the more brighter, hopeful universe. I feel that people who say that “DC is dark and marvel is funny” are just purely basing it on the last 15 years of movies, and not 80 years or comics history. Long time comic fans know this. I find it frustrating. But in the end, I love both companies, and wish them the best.
Can’t get behind the third act being weak. I thought the movie was consistent all throughout. Considering that the Riddler’s succeeding, a soft ending should suffice and fit the story considering that Batman has to show that side when he realizes that fear isn’t what Gotham needs the most, but hope

Grace I've been following you for so so long that I trust your word on Batman cause that's something that you've always broadcasted and talked about your love for the character and you're very much insightful on Batman so when you say it's not perfect but close then I just can't wait to watch this film. I'll be honest I had my hesitations for so long remembering when the original plan was for Ben Affleck to helm a solo Batman movie then it changed hands then Ben Affleck left the character so through all that time and uncertainty it made me feel like this movie wasn't going to see the light of day so for it now to finally release and for you to be as happy as you were with the movie even with its shortcomings well than I can't help but be excited. I'm a huge Batman fan so I can't wait to enter this Batman world and I'm glad you left no spoilers or hints. I did my best to avoid any leaks or spoilers so I can't wait to see what all unfolds.
I was on the fence about seeing this in theaters or waiting for streaming but this review sold me. Going to see it Thursday!

Didn't believe when you said it was the best Batman movie when there's the Dark Knight, and honestly I did not like the trailers so I was nervous and yet still excited because it's Batman. And damn it is the best, Pattinson the moment he comes into play your not sure but then it sticks and he is Batman, no other actor gets close after seeing this movie, it's the best comic book movie since Logan and the Dark Knight it is spectacular.
Well, I got my tickets for this for Friday at 10:30am and mine's was the only ticket sold for that time. Big difference from December when I did the same for No Way Home and the good seats where already taken for the 10:30am show. I hope more people come see it.
I just think Batman fans tend to not be morning people. ;)

I went to a preview fan IMAX screening tonight- I loved it, can't wait to see it again. I felt the runtime a couple times during the movie, however, I thought everyone involved did such a good job holding my interest that the run time ultimately didn't bring it down
I love your reviews. While I do disagree here and there, your reviews give me a footprint on whether I will spend my hand earned cash to watch aovie on a premium screen.

Funny cause I thought this was actually the most electric Batman/Catwoman romance done on-screen for me (much respect to Hathaway and Bale and Keaton and Pfeifer but) holy shit I could feel the heat and cut the tension with a knife when they were like face to face with each-other, their relationship was awesome, I'm not super into romance in films but maaaan, I ship these two.

I’ve watched this same review 50+ times. I’m seeing it 3 times tomorrow starting in the morning ending late at night. I’m so so so so so so so very excited. I’m a Marvel & Star Wars & DC fan and I think all studios are finally getting on the right track or finding their footing. It’s beautiful to see it unfold. I’m so happy for Batman. Can’t wait to see this movie.

Im super glad this movie is good, I had a feeling but a Batman fan really getting behind this is telling to me at least. watching this I feel like I dont need or that Catwoman and Batman have a relationship, I mean is in the comics and other movies, but I much rather would like to see them more as coworkers/good friends than a couple. I was behind RP since the begging and im glad he deliver, cant wait to see this movie on Thursday !!!

Awesome review! I just hope we get more exploration of Batman’s Rogues Gallery down the line for potential sequels. We seen enough Riddlers, Jokers, Penguins, etc. Love to see a live action Clayface, Hush, Black Mask, Mad Hatter, etc.

Just watched the movie. Oh.My.God. Saying the movie is brilliant and spectacular is somehow still an understatement. I know. Sounds unbelievable, right? But it is THAT good! This is a true masterpiece. It's by far the best batman movie. It's so poetic but also very much grounded at the same time. So beautiful, though bleak. Fantasy but feels very real. Dark, but with lots of good humor in it. I laughed many times during the movie. It's hilarious. I will definitely watch it again this weekend. Oh yes. I will.
WE NEED TO PROTECT MATT REEVES AND THE REST OF THIS CAST AND ANY OTHERS MOVING FORWARD WITH THIS BATMAN SERIES.
I was gonna wait for HBOMAX for this, but after this review-I may have to rethink my stance and see it at the theaters

Just done watching today! No spoilers, Matt Reeves really understands what The Batman is supposed to be. The Batman is on 🔥🔥. The movie basically got everything we've been expecting. Batinson really is The Batman, the non stop actions fuel still the hype, full of puzzling events, also there's a surprise that make you want to see more, and I'm dead serious. And at the end, we are all going to be a part of the puzzle that needs discussion for a period of time, and it has something to do with the future of the movie. 🔥🔥🔥 AVE MARIA!

Grace, I have a question (that you could perhaps answer in a future video): Now that you've seen the movie, would you prefer this to be a Matt Reeves standalone Batman universe (a la the Nolan-verse), or would you prefer Pattinson's Batman to join the wider DCEU at some point in the future? And what do you think the best decision would be from both an artistic perspective and a business perspective?

I’m looking forward to seeing the Riddler clean up the filth that is Gotham. The criminal Batman playing both sides. It’s gonna be awesome.
It's primarily a crime/mystery noir film. Matt Reeves' take on Batman's character is about him learning to have more hope, be more empathetic and compassionate, learn more self-control of his anger, and learn to also channel his trauma into more positive things. It's the start of the transition from vigilante to hero.
Don't expect Batman in the film to be a super smart detective or fighter though. He isn't dumb by any means, but he is show as still clearly inexperienced and naive in many ways. I don't say that as a criticism.
The film really captures a Gotham with personality, out of this world. And it's primarily a slow-burn crime/mystery noir than an action movie. Loved that.
You also have to watch it on a good theater. So many theaters have shitty sound that you can barely understand the dialogue, and also shitty resolution, color contrast and clarity in the image. A film like The Batman specially demands a good theater, because otherwise the dark cinematography gets ruined. I speak from experience.
If looking in terms of irl philanthropic rich people dedicated to doing good, Dolly Parton would be our Batman.
