The opening “montage” where he’s narrating how the signal strikes fear into criminals and makes them literally jump at shadows was amazing. It set the tone so well and thankfully, the movie kept it up the entire way till the end.
I felt it was perfect, from that scene I said to myself “this is the type of comic book movie I’ve been eating for” takes the time to set up its tone, the editing isn’t going 100 cuts per minute, and the music tension is memorable! Beats any other superhero movie of the past 5 years for me
Collin Farrell was a revelation to me here as an actor. Robert Pattinson is amazing. Zoe Kravitz and Jeffrey Wright are so on point. The casting on this film is PHENOMENAL.
Farrell is an incredible actor. If you liked what he does here you should watch The Lobster and the killing of a sacred deer. He is phenomenal in those.
God.... hearing bruce talk about how scared criminals were of him and seeing them be afraid of dark alleys and shadows gave me goosebumps. Loved the Halloween monologue
What made it even better is that the local authorities seemed to be using the Bat Signal as a preventative measure in combination with pork choppers. "Is he in the shadows?" There's a police helicopter, oh god, he's gotta be right there!"
@@thomasmichael2766 they were clearly turning it on even if they didn't need batman, just to scare people on the street, id like to think Gordon and batman worked out times where the signal actually meant "come lets meet". Every other time was to instill fear
The movie was so engrossing. I have never seen a movie that immersed into its world as much as The Batman has. It was thought provoking, chilling, epic, and emotional. Also, seeing Batman’s journey from a vengeful force who was only really thinking about himself become a beacon of hope and a savior of the people of Gotham was beautiful.
bro the scene with him leading them out of the water and the one with him sitting beside the girl in the gurney were some of my favorite batman moments out to screen🔥
@@timmytang7965 I honestly cried at that scene because these people don’t trust the simple institutions (medical professionals in that gurney scene) to help them. They’ve put their trust and faith in a crazy man wearing a freaking cape. How tragic and beautiful!
Are you high? It looks like they hired an 8 year old to handle the editing. LLLOOONNNGGG lingering shots and scenes with no emotional investment makes for an awkward viewing experience and disengages the audience. Even a novice spending precisely 1 work day on editing this thing would've cut at least 20 minutes from the movie.
The adrenaline was really awesome, I know you didn’t love the 3rd act, but it was really cool that he even had a “port” in the armor to inject himself, that moment just enhanced how prepared this Batman was for me
you know what that reminded me of though, the venom storyline from the comics, where bruce was taking the stuff they inject bane with. he eventually stopped using it though because he couldnt control his rage. and then after that came the knightfall series with bane breaking the bat.
I like that this movie was a completely different gene to the Nolan films. At first I was worried they were going to copy Nolan’s formula, but the way the film is shot, the tech, and the fact that it is more of a mystery genre like ‘law and order’ vs. an action-crime-drama movie, made me appreciate the different style.
I loved the interrogation scene because it takes you from: “he knows Batman is Bruce Wayne.” To “it’s just a terrifyingly close call.” To “he understands the even deeper truth that Batman is the true identity.”
The part when he jumped off the roof with the wing suit and darted past that building. CHEFF’S KISS, even if he didn’t stick the landing at the end, lmao. Robert really surprised me here! He’s honestly the best Batman to date in my opinion. Just the right amount of detective and fighter, just perfect.
I disagree that catwoman and batmans relationship didn’t have a romantic thing to it. Their romance was subtle but so effective. I felt tension between them all the time and I think it would have been too early to make them complete lovers, so what we got was perfect according to me!
When the henchman said "I'm Vengeance" this film went to the depths I was hoping for. They thought they were doing the right thing after being cast aside by the city of Gotham, their justification and actions inspired by The Batman. A deeper shared psychosis that Bruce can recognize and empathize with leading to the reason why he doesn't kill. Hurt people hurt people. Seeing it again Friday. I can't wait!!
The "Vengeance" scene may be the most important single piece of this movie. The idea that he is more than just vengeance...the other Batfilms never go that far.....and him actually helping people as opposed to just beating people to pulps....this movie nailed everything.
@@ICU1337 I think the way this arc is handled is different in both movies. The “vengeance” portion of Nolan’s Batman really starts and ends with Bruce wanting to kill Joe Chill.., after that he becomes a symbol to “strike fear into the hearts of criminals” and give the people of Gotham someone to root for.., Admirable stuff. However, ‘The Batman’ makes this Bruce’s core motivation, allowing time for us to see how this impacts on the man himself before he starts to care about other people. Aside from picking strategic situations to learn from and using pent-up aggression as fuel, after the failed assassination attempt on Chill, Bale’s adult Bruce is driven, together and focused In lieu of a personal life Bale’s Bruce is a man of wealth with a single quiet purpose. Also, Bale is comfortably making power moves at Wayne Enterprises by the end of the first movie. Pattinson’s Bruce on the other hand is traumatised in real-time, vengeance eating him up from the insides. ‘The Batman’ feels like a stage missing from The Dark Knight Trilogy.
@@damyanthelion I had to read this a few times to understand what you were saying but I'm tracking. My whole thing is what Nick stated just isnt true... The 2nd and 3rd films go over this character arc for Batman/Bruce. I mean, is he kissing babies at the end of the trilogy like this guy is at the end of 'The Batman'? No, its a bit more subtle than what we saw in this movie but its still there. Anyways, I cant wait to see what the rest of the story has to tell us.
I didn't expect Joker to be in this movie at all! Btw Selina reveal of her dad is good and I think the average moviegoers probably 95% will not know at all
Comic readers would, for sure. But if you’re like most people, whose only experience with Catwoman is from the tv shows and movies, you’d have no idea that was coming. Granted, you’d also likely not have that much of an idea about who Falcone is and why he’s so bad, so it extra wouldn’t matter anyway 😂
@@thegreyinitiate3680 well to be fair of the actual Batman’s fans in the world only a small percentage actually reads comics with any regularity. For most the movies are the main source of reference.
The bat saving those people at the flood and sheperding them with light on his hand to safety was incredibly symbolic. Almost felt very much like Superman.
I like the detective side of things. At times it felt like the movie "Seven", which was perfect. The romance was very well done. They had amazing chemistry.
@@zacgale4231 I think you didn't feel the chemistry at all probably because you haven't had a relationship in the way they do. They really like each other and have a strong connection yet their complete opposite and can't be together, mainly catwomans choice tho.
Gordon- “you could of pulled that punch” Batman- “I did” Great line, Perfect delivery just the right amount of levity. LOVED this movie and your coverage Grace!
This movie was everything I wanted. The riddler is the most challenging character to write because the writers need to be smarter than the characters and the audience (which is hard to do in 2022); butbthey nailed it. Sequel wish list: 1) detective/noir: court of owls 2) horror: scarecrow or 3) horror: Arkham asylum
Yes! Horror Scarecrow would be everything I've ever wanted from a Batman movie. Put it in Arkham too... like Johnathan Crane is working there instead of being a professor and experimenting on the patients with fear toxin.
@@anvaryusupov8245 not explicitly. Probably figured it out during his investigation of the renewal foundation. Or the spied on Bruce and saw him suit up lol
This movie was great because it didn’t have anything to do with any expanded universe. Any attempt to shoehorn something like that in these films will be an incredibly poor choice.
He said he wishes it was just a random crime, but he also couldn’t shake the feeling that Falcone had something to do with it because they were killed after Thomas Wayne spoke with him.
I respect the film maker having the balls to do something different with the first Wayne's death being connected to organized crime. But that whole plotline was pointless & is largely meaningless since they've been dead for like 20 years. Plus both the previous Batman franchises had the Wayne's death somehow connected to present to something that came uo in Bruce afult life. In Tim Burton batman jomer had killed them & in Nolan their killer was cellmates with Falconi.
@@keitht24 It wasn’t meaningless since putting Bruce through that emotional trauma yet again. It made him confused and made him question Alfred only to re affirm his care and love for him.
Re: Catwoman. Completely disagree. Loved how he tiptoed around the idea of showing care for her. Asking her about her past, nearly losing his ish when he thought she was at the funeral. You could cut the sexual tension between those two with a knife.
The arkham scene may be my fav of the entire movie. With the music building the tension as riddler starts singing and batman starts yelling what have you done and banging the glass and getting madder and madder gives u such emotion like holy crap that was intense.
I loved how densely populated Gotham felt (for the first time ever) with tons and tons and tons of extras appearing in so many different scenes, as opposed to just maybe one or two. That whole funeral sequence looked spectacular. Such grandeur, like big movies such as Ben Hur, Titanic, Gone with the Wind, Blade Runner. It really made Gotham feel much more alive and believable compared to the Nolan and Burton films.
The important part of the arena is it really pulled batman into more of a hero role.. I loved his final monologue where he realized he needs to be more
The Bat rescuing trapped people in a destroyed Gotham square with a red flare on his hand gave me goosebumps! Absolute brilliance! Better than TDK, IMO!
I loved it because it also represented the character arc of batman from being in the darkness/shadows of Gotham to being the light that guides Gotham into becoming a better place.
I loved the hero journey he went on. In the beginning he said he was the dark & at the end he lit the torch and became the light in the dark. Fantastic stuff!
I can say that this movie everything I wanted as Grace says there are some things to improve but watching the comics come to life was so satisfying, Gotham is the most Gotham I’ve ever seeing it, it felt so real and I loved when Grace said that it never stops raining because it can’t be cleaned, and Batman and riddlers convo was THE best, I do hope that people don’t boycott this movie because it deserves to be one of the best DC movies EVER.
also the fear of his identity as batman when he made the mistake of not digging deeper cause he thought riddler wasonto him, he knows the second his identity is out its over, it really feels like a great setup for scarecrow, to manipulate and expose these fears, i really want 2 and 3 to be court of owls then finish it off with scarecrow, then mixing in little things like hush, dent etc
The Halloween monologue was fucking AWESOME!! So quintessentially Batman, I knew at that moment that Robert Pattinson was going to kill it. I think other movies have touched on this ‘fear of the shadows’ aspect, but this movie cemented that fear VERY clearly in the Halloween sequence. My second favorite scene was probably that fight in the rafters of Gotham Square Garden (hehe). So many ‘Batman’ moments there, plus we see him finally realize ‘The Bat’s True Calling’. Going from a kind of beast of vengeance to this tangible symbol of hope for the people of Gotham, ngl, I choked up a little bit. But this movie is FULL of awesome moments and themes, that it’s REALLY hard to narrow down just a few favorites. I loved the whole thing, even with the like two faults I found. Excited to see it again this weekend!
Jeffrey Wrights Gordon is the unsung MVP of this movie, Batman and Gordon’s scenes together are electrifying, even more so than Catwoman 🤣😂 bromance all the way
One of my favorite scenes was Gordon posturing like he was in a heated argument with Batman for the cops to see - but they were just talking. Jeffrey Wright was brilliant.
I was a bit worried about the casting at first, but he did such a great job as Gordon, it felt so natural. Batman and Gordon really had the synergy going
12:55 wait.... what? I don't think the Batmobile stalled. I thought it was an intimidation tactic. He jolt forward for a split second and made them flinch, like you would do in a fight
Absolutely loved that we had a no kill Batman and that he even acknowledges why he doesn't kill. Makes no sense in past movies that you have Gordon happily work with and trust a batman who kills
The Joker reveal, I don't care how many times you do it, if it's done well it works for me. But even though this reveal still worked for me, it doesn't compare to the card flip at the end of Begins.
Agreed! Barry is a great actor but now they sort of committed to him while at the end of Batman begins, they gave themselves that cushion to find an actor
I dunno…I got a strong sense of doom when they started laughing….it was creepy as fuck…and the thought of having to deal with BOTH of these dudes…I really loved that reveal
@EKLAVYA PRATHABHA VARMA I saw an interview that Matt Reeves said he doesn't know yet if the Joker will be the next villain, he just wants us to know that this version of the character is out there, so we will have to wait and see.
They made Riddler terrifying and I loved it. I've never been a big fan of the character, but between this and Gotham's version, Riddler's definitely becoming one of my faves. My fave scene was def the car chase. It felt straight out of the Arkham games and I was on the edge of my seat. This whole movie reminded me of Arkham Knight, which is my fave Batman game. Overall, amazing film and I will definitely be seeing it again
The Batman has the best performances for many of these characters. And it's the best-looking Batman since the Tim Burton films. I was almost giving up on my Batman, but thank you, Matt Reeves. He totally gets it. I'm a believer again.
The TIm Burton movies... For real? The Burton era Batmans are terrible.. The first one just about watchable but the others.. Ugh. The Dark Knight Trilogy was brilliant, have you not seen it?
@@backchat8086 Seriously, I'm seeing a lot of people compare this to Nolan Batman. It's not even close, this film isn't in the same universe. I can't believe Grace said this was the best Batman movie. She has to be trolling.
Absolutely loved this film! Better than the Nolan trilogy for me. One of my fav scenes was the corridor scene at Falcone's place. The visuals from the light of the gunshots contrasting with the pitch blackness as Batman is doing his thing. Amazing Directing
I said the same thing about the Nolan Trilogy after seeing this movie, and my husband who is a HUGE fan of the those movies gave me that "how are we even married" look right there in the theatre. LOL!
@@Ghostrider-ul7xn Have to disagree with you. Nolan trilogy is great for someone not into the comics. Its great cinematography/story telling and thats about it. But, there is no true comic book essence in Nolans movies. No Gotham Essence. No Bruce Wayne essence and tbh no Batman essence. Bale is one of the worse Batman/Bruce Wayne imo. Only good things to come from them movies were Heath Ledgers Joker and Tom Hardys Bane. Everything else is like i said, Cinematography. Which is expected from a Nolan film.
“The whole point is you’re not supposed to know” Uh… joe chill!? It’s ALWAYS been him, movies just altered that. Even when Bruce found out who it was, it was a great moment for him to not avenge them in favor of upholding his no kill rule.
It’s more about if someone ordered it. And if so who? Joe chill being the killer isn’t the most important. If he was a random guy or if he was ordered by someone like maroni or falconi. That’s what matters the most. Bruce not killing him is ofcourse still meaningfull.
I loved this movie and will be going back to see it again. My only issue was the arena scene. I feel they missed an opportunity to make that sequence just jaw dropping, guttural, and brutal. They played it safe. I saw them do that in a few scenes. That arena scene should've had those shooters wrecking havoc by killing so many people. The mayor should not have survived that gunshot. All of this happening before and while Batman was fighting them. It should have been shot as a real struggle for Batman. Like literal life and death to where Batman had to choose between surviving and saving the people. Also in the scene where Selina has the cop on the roof and kicks him off, he should've died and not had Batman save him or at least have him attempt but not be successful. Examples like this is why I thought they played it safe at times. The movie already established this was going to be dark and brutal. Go all the way. Bring it home.
I thought that guy Selena pushed off the edge should've died too but I get that they don't want to make her a killer. She teeters that line of good and bad and being a straight up killer puts her out of reach to be someone who Batman can fraternize with.
I actually was not expecting the arena scene after hearing people say the 3rd act was like slow and drawn out, thought it wasnt bad, although i agree it could of been even more
I absolutely loved this film! That opening scene where he’s describing himself as the shadows was incredible - it genuinely made him scary and allowed you to see what the criminals feel. Pattinson was so good as Batman, he added such a unique tortured and reserved aspect to the character! And the fight scenes were so well choreographed - and holy shit was Riddler scary
Saw it yesterday, absolutely awesome I really liked the end where batman realized that he has to not only scare and punish criminals but also be seen how he actually wants to help people and be a better role model. Basically let his inner/real motives be seen. That was nice evolution in one film.
I think of Batman walking slowly as Jason Vorhees stalking his prey. No matter how far away you think you've gotten from him, he only needs to walk to eventually catch up to you. So good!
This movie really appeals to those of us who love deep dark artwork. So much metaphor in this film that spoke to the current problems in western society. Best DC film ever.
This movie made me cry tears of joy. I honestly loved the third act and that tease ...CHILLS. i loved what they did with the suit ,making it a literal knight suit with those chain sounds ! A literal DARK KNIGHT !!
I loved, loved, loved Colin as the penguin. I really hope he is in the next movie. He was so good. Robert as Batman was great. I just want to see more of those two in their roles.
The one thing that bothers me about the Joker Scene is, that it's completely unnecessary. This felt more like Matt Reeves and/or Warner Bros. telling people: "Don't worry guys, the Joker is coming. We got one!" Which is a shame, the Movie had the confidence to do all that other stuff, but they couldn't resist.. Doesn't take away from the movie though.
I agree it really didnt need it and from the tease we got . . . im not confident in barry keoghan’s abilty to take on that role, his dialogue wasn’t great and his laugh was so weak and not menacing at all (i actually thought dano’s laugh sounded more joker like)
This was probably my favourite Batman after the Dark Knight. For a 3 hour movie, I never felt bored and was always engaged which is a huge credit to the script and pacing. My only two criticisms were one, I would have liked more action scenes and two, all of the film’s best visual moments and action sequences were in the trailers. The movie has similarities to the Nolan trilogy but overall, Reeves’ vision stands on its own and I personally prefer it over Nolan’s. I agree with Grace that a few supporting characters could have been better cast but I had no issues with the main casting. On a lighter note, I hope RPatts has a better hairstyle in the next movie.
All my predictions came true. Pattinson would be the GOAT and he is. I still like The Dark Knight more. But I was so immersed into Pattman's performance. First time it felt the villain didn't outshine the Batman actor.
Right next to the dark knight for me. Really enjoyed and loved how Batman IS the character and focus. We gotten enough of Bruce in other movies and now after this im ready to see Bruce side be fleshed out in the sequel after these events. Loved how Gotham itself felt like a character the best depiction of city by far. All the relationships felt very believable and worked well within this movie. The flooding I didn't mind at all but right around this time I really felt the runtime. Overall thoroughly enjoyed this movie, not particularly looking forward to the spins off, don't think we need them. I rather visit this world again in a sequel.
I loved the arena sequence, the realism of when he's absolutely shattered from clinging on to the ledge with one hand was so realistic and when he injects adrenaline and he goes berserk WOW and then seeing the same riddler goon from the early Bruce Wayne scene in the church saying I AM VENGENCE
Again me, I did feel the chemistry between Catwoman and Batman, the first moment he sees her when they're in the club, it cannot be better!! The way they see each other! Omg beatiful.
The fact that no one's talking about how Nirvana's "Something In The Way" had a core part in this film is injustice. It fit so well. My only disappointment is that there were no IMAX sequences but this film was great nonetheless.
@@____v143 the IMAX theaters will always give you the better sound and usually a bigger screen than the usual theatre screen. Nothing shot in IMAX sadly so it’s not the full experience tho.
I'm with you grace. I've had a bit of time to digest it after seeing it yesterday and I can say that it's my favorite Batman movie, Pattinson is my favorite Batman, Paul Dano was absolutely fantastic as the Riddler. The score, the cinematography, everything was done so well. Can't wait to watch it again.
In the prequel book that came out last month they say that Riddler would go around to yard and estate sales and buy old greeting cards, and that he had shelves of them.
I just assumed that everyone did know that she was Martha Arkham. What they covered up was the circumstances of her parents deaths. To both Bruce's parents and whoever the remaining ranking members of the Arkham family were it must have seemed like a match made in heaven to have a member of the wealthy and powerful Wayne family marry a daughter from the almost equally wealthy and powerful Arkham family. So again, that's what I got. Everyone knew that she was Martha Arkham and that her parents had passed away in 1981. But how exactly they passed away and her own struggles with mental health are what had been hidden from the public.
I love me some Gary Oldman. He's one of my all-time favorite actors. But Jeffrey Wright is easily the best Commissioner Gordon! Paul Dano was fantastic. Colin Farrell was underused but was amazing. Performances were all top-notch.
Grace, I just want to say I really appreciate your videos and content online. This film honestly was absolutely incredible. I'm kinda stunned that I liked it so much because I usually (despite my love for them) am quite critical of comic book films, even for Batman. I love MotP and TDK, but I'm happy to say this film is up there in my top 3. Everything was fresh, unique, noir, exciting, and quite terrifying. This is why I want to work for DC/WB - it's these types of films/stories that intrigue me and I want to contribute towards them eventually. Anyway, just wanted to say you have a great energy and thank you for keeping us all engaged.
Love the movie and so happy to finally watch your spoiler review! The Riddler singing to "Ave Maria" to the Batman was my favorite scene. What a masterpiece.
I was surprised to see Metropolis and Lex Corp being name dropped in the prequel novel, "Before the Batman". Wonder what that means for the future of the franchise.
This is the best take on Batman to date the whole movie was bang on point. Kudos to Reeves and Pattinson for pulling this off. Can't wait for more of this from them both
I didn't know Selena was Falcone Daughter!! Grace yes, for you wasn't a surprise because you know the comics! Most of the people don't, and I mean I have read many comics, but is not like they always mention that. So yes, it was a big moment for me.
The undercover scene in the club was one of my absolute favourite scenes hands down. Revealing the hidden underbelly of the depth of corruption within Gotham and its perpetrators to the eye technology alone I found incredibly interesting and genious. Bruce and Selena's subtle infighting over what direction their undercover op should take. Further probing the D.A for information or finding a missing friend? Very interesting ploy. Their explosive bust up in the end over Falcone only added more fuel to an already blazing fire. I really hope Zoë Kravitz returns for the sequel(s). Loved her performance as Catwoman, she embodied her to a T!
Nicholson and Pfeiffer outshined Keaton. Neeson, Ledger, and Hardy outshined Bale. This felt like a BATMAN movie. A Robert Pattinson movie. The most comic-accurate Batman film. And Batman DOESN'T KILL.
Well except for the highway chase that he blatantly started and resulted in a massive fireball blowing up several vehicles which he uses to ramp over and look badass ;)
It's a great storyline to see Batman learn from his mistakes, he cant just be vengeance, he must also be a light for the hopeful, but it's weird, Batman doesn't really save the day, he didn't capture the Riddler, riddler surrendered, he didn't stop Gotham from being flooded, thought we would see Bruce wayne at the end donating money to help restore Gotham or at least take an interest in Wayne enterprise, something was just missing at the end, maybe they'll acknowledge in the sequel that Bruce helped restore Gotham, sets up Catwoman for her own TV series or film too but I'm more interested what they'll do in the sequel, surely Gordon will be commissioner in it, the current one being rat food in this and Gordon saving the new mayor hopefully it's not too long a wait for the sequel, some great moments in this one 8/10
Great point. That's why I don't feel fully satisfied by the end, there's just something missing narratively and it's what you said. He didn't actually accomplish a whole lot. His character had an arc, but as the main character of a movie, he didn't save the day.
I loved the scene in the beginning of the criminals scared of Batman, it was so cool! In general I really loved this movie a lot, definitely gonna see it again.
I loved it, my only complaints were having Joker at the end (completely unnecessary, let’s give Joker a break for a while), Selena in love with Bruce when he didn’t seem into her at all, and all of the Wayne reveals of if Thomas was bad or not & Martha committed it felt completely shoehorned in out of nowhere and was resolved right after it was introduced with clunky long monologue expositions from Falcone & Alfred it felt like the studio just wanted higher personal stakes and just threw it in there. That’s all, 3 small complaints the rest was perfection.
@@chrisj1468 I’d have been much more excited if they had teased a villain we haven’t seen much of. Imagine getting to see Mr. Freeze done right! But no we get *another* Joker, after Nicholson, Ledger, Leto, Phoenix in his own film, & Hamill in all of the video games and animation. He’s so unbelievably played out and tired
I agree haha i honestly am just telling myself that was one of Joaquins buddies or something haha cuz really? If it aint jaquins joker then please dont force another joker, it was laughable really
My favorites part were the beginning, the club scenes, and the moment when the bombs exploded (basically Batman realizing he made a mistake), and when he jumps to cut that electric cable. Omg I loved the whole movie!!!
Alfred mentions his time in "the circus" when solving the cipher. It is a throw back to bletchley park in Ww2 (alan turing) and Alfred's time as a former MI6 spy.
I did like the flood, it impacted me a lot cause I didn't see it coming, and when the explosions happened I was just so amazed, cause that's the thing that the heroe would normally stop from happening, but here it happened! so I think that also because of that I enjoyed the 3rd act a lot. Now let's get back to the video. :)
It was thematic. Flood the streets of Gotham to wash the sins away. I get why the Riddler did it and I was okay with it. Only thing I would've changed is I would've added 20 minutes on to have Batman, Catwoman, and Gordon try to diffuse some of the bombs but fail to get the main one. Would've been like the Riddler trophy stuff, but probably would've ran the runtime over 3 hours.
@@e3vL1 as a fan of the Batman Comics, the flood was like Seeing Gwenn Stacy in that green coat in Amazing Spiderman, you know what's about to happen - I just didn't think they'd actually do it. I thought this movie was going to let batman save the day or some cliche shit like that because they dropped clues everywhere in the movie about the unfinished renewal and the fact that construction on the sea wall had stalled - I really thought he was going to put it together but then they bring back the carpet tool and I was like "oh fuck he missed it." and people in the theatre were giving me dirty looks. but actually flooding the city wow! I didn't expect multiple comic favorite moments to come to life like this. just wow!
Just saw it and it was amazing. Battinson looked like a contemporary Neal Adams/Jim Aparo drawing come to life. Loved the entire cast. Loved seeing Gordon and Batman working together.
The way you can tell Batman is absolutely Grace's fave from how she weaved all her comic knowledge in here, so good 😍. Amazing review. Completely agree, this is the new Batman standard for film.
THIS MOVIE IS PHENOMENAL ! I’m still digesting everything and can’t stop thinking about it. More spin offs and sequels please 🙏🏼 I love how excited you’re about this movie Grace. It’ll be timeless 🦇
When Batman finally came out of the shadows in the way that all the other shown criminals feared he would during that intro montage, with his theme playing and the sound of his heavy boots dominating the entire room, it was perfect!! It even spooked the audience
It kind of didn't work entirely though. Everyone else was running scared from the shadows when batman wasn't even there. Then when he actually does come out of the shadows the thugs there are like "who are you"? Really liked the scene overall but that aspect seemed a bit off.
I agree with you Grace, and I think there are enough foundations laid to bring a change in Bruce's appearance. His fear of loosing Alfred, Bella calling him to do more as Bruce, understanding vengeance isn't the way and of course the Wayne legacy. So I won't be surprised if we see more comic accurate Bruce in the sequel.
This is my favorite version of Batman. I got goosebumps in that 1st fight scene. The car chase had me on the edge of my seat! I do agree with you on the arena scene. As well as everything else fit thematically, that scene didn't unfold as naturally as the rest of the film did. Maybe we'll get an extended cut at the dvd release with more detail on that scene or what happens prior.
Late comment, but Grace missed a perfect opportunity for a tie-in joke when she was talking about the flood and cleaning up Gotham and "dunk it in the bath." All I could think of was "This town needs an enema."
I saw the film last nigh and man was I all in, my wife and I enjoyed it, the beginning of the film set such a tone of how Batman is perceived in Gotham and we felt horror aspects of this film. Big shout out to the sound design team. *Side note... that parachute scene, I thought for sure he was going to break his neck. My man skid about 50 yards...on concrete side walks lol
OK for a “non-comics reader”( I don’t read the comics), I was genuinely surprised by Selina Kyle’s father being Falcone, & Martha comes from an Arkham family. I gasped !
Loved it! Probably gonna go see it again this weekend. That slow walk out of the dark reminded me of western films, but without the spurs. I know you’re not a western fan, but lots of themes i saw. Especially the slow burn. Great film and I thought everyone knocked it out of the park. Really liked Pattinson’s Batman!
This joker didn't get thrown into a vat of chemicals, he has a birth condition where he can't not laugh, Matt reeves talks about it himself. And he also said that the villains are in there early years just like batman, so that why he doesn't look like classic joker cause he's not there yet PLUS we didn't really see him to judge and say he doesn't look like the joker.
When the Batmobile showed up, I had a huge smile on my face. It's pretty devoid of humor. I think the funniest line came from Penguin with his "good cop, bat/bad cop" 💩 line. Colin is so unrecognizable but he was fantastic.
The one bone I have to pick with this movie is that Batman cannot glide or fly without taking a while to change his suit. The flying squirrel suit didn't do it for me
I feel the Martha reveal was great because I think it made Bruce question his own sanity and going forward, it might give him more empathy for the inmates.
Some people seem to forget that Bruce Wayne is just in his 2nd year as The Batman. He is still learning his craft. Maybe in the next movies he'll try to act like a billionaire playboy. Let's just give him the benefit of the doubt here.
The opening “montage” where he’s narrating how the signal strikes fear into criminals and makes them literally jump at shadows was amazing. It set the tone so well and thankfully, the movie kept it up the entire way till the end.
I disagree that it kept it up the entire time, but I'm in agreement with everything else. I loved that first 30 minutes so much.
Low key the best sequence in the movie
I felt it was perfect, from that scene I said to myself “this is the type of comic book movie I’ve been eating for” takes the time to set up its tone, the editing isn’t going 100 cuts per minute, and the music tension is memorable! Beats any other superhero movie of the past 5 years for me
Yeah that opening sequence gave me Watchmen vibes ( I loved That movie so much)
One of the best openings to a movie I've ever seen!
Collin Farrell was a revelation to me here as an actor. Robert Pattinson is amazing. Zoe Kravitz and Jeffrey Wright are so on point. The casting on this film is PHENOMENAL.
Paul dano riddler was amazing
Farrell is an incredible actor. If you liked what he does here you should watch The Lobster and the killing of a sacred deer. He is phenomenal in those.
I didn't like falcone but other than that I liked the casting
Farrell absolutely nailed the role, no doubt. Falcone was alright and Catwoman was lacking
Collin Farrell was my favorite performance, he was flawless as Penguin. As good as he looks, I was convinced that he was a gross pig. Awesome makeup.
God.... hearing bruce talk about how scared criminals were of him and seeing them be afraid of dark alleys and shadows gave me goosebumps. Loved the Halloween monologue
Hearing those boots and that first fight scene was the best on screen I’ve ever seen Batman 🖤
Sameeee chills
What made it even better is that the local authorities seemed to be using the Bat Signal as a preventative measure in combination with pork choppers. "Is he in the shadows?" There's a police helicopter, oh god, he's gotta be right there!"
@@thomasmichael2766 they were clearly turning it on even if they didn't need batman, just to scare people on the street, id like to think Gordon and batman worked out times where the signal actually meant "come lets meet". Every other time was to instill fear
I teared up at that part lol
Agreed this Batman’s arc is a bruce Wayne figureing out he has to be more he has to be a symbol of hope, gothams ….DARK KNIGHT
Are you high? It looks like they hired an 8 year old to handle the editing. LLLOOONNNGGG lingering shots and scenes with no emotional investment makes for an awkward viewing experience and disengages the audience.
@@ArtofLunatik In Venom, he stopped because he was becoming stupid and mentally confused.

The 3rd act was very underwhelming, a lot of people have said this I think. Also, Paul Dano was a little cringy.
@@DC-zi6se I always find that people’s opinion on a movie changes the more they hear other people’s opinions. Make up your own mind.
I agree. Batman is at his best when he’s dark, realistic, and serious.
I love lego batman. I actually think this movie was comic booky and a little campy and was better for it.
@@clara-nt9rx I actually love that movie too
I loved the interrogation scene because it takes you from: “he knows Batman is Bruce Wayne.” To “it’s just a terrifyingly close call.” To “he understands the even deeper truth that Batman is the true identity.”
The first scene when Batman is holding Selina so she stays quiet, you could instantly feel the sexual tension in that moment
@@PeterBParker2398 The music that played during their scenes also helped a lot in that
Honestly for me, cat and the bat were the weakest part of the movie
Agreed!
The way he would say Selena made me wish my name was Selena 💀 idk how ppl think they didn’t have chemistry.
Just like " "What makes difference between you & me?", "I'm not wearing hockey pads" "scene in TDK
@@nickmunn7539 eh... they played this card already in the Nolan films.
Aside from picking strategic situations to learn from and using pent-up aggression as fuel, after the failed assassination attempt on Chill, Bale’s adult Bruce is driven, together and focused
In lieu of a personal life Bale’s Bruce is a man of wealth with a single quiet purpose.

This movie was everything I wanted. The riddler is the most challenging character to write because the writers need to be smarter than the characters and the audience (which is hard to do in 2022); butbthey nailed it. Sequel wish list:
1) detective/noir: court of owls 2) horror: scarecrow or 3) horror: Arkham asylum
Yes! Horror Scarecrow would be everything I've ever wanted from a Batman movie. Put it in Arkham too... like Johnathan Crane is working there instead of being a professor and experimenting on the patients with fear toxin.
Riddler's plan at the end was way over the top compared what he prepped prior. Could have been implemented better
May I ask question. Did explain how riddler found the real identity of Batman?

Facts
Alfred says that the Wayne's death could be just another random crime... I think it keeps pretty clear that it could be anyone. They will never know.
He said he wishes it was just a random crime, but he also couldn’t shake the feeling that Falcone had something to do with it because they were killed after Thomas Wayne spoke with him.
@@TheBruceWang falcone said almost the same thing, but with Moroni instead
true but joe chill is the real killer ha ha.
He’s possessive in a way you 100% expect a man who dresses like a bat and beats the shit outta people all night to be😂
Agree 100%
I loved his final monologue where he realized he needs to be more
It made me cry
The Bat rescuing trapped people in a destroyed Gotham square with a red flare on his hand gave me goosebumps! Absolute brilliance! Better than TDK, IMO!
Agreed! TDK was great because of one epic, maybe once in a lifetime, performance. The Batman was great because it was an amazing movie!
I loved it because it also represented the character arc of batman from being in the darkness/shadows of Gotham to being the light that guides Gotham into becoming a better place.
Grace, it never ceases to amaze me how you can make an eloquent 50 min video in ONE TAKE!
Love how the film explored how Bruce doesn't fear death. It's his fear of losing those closest to him that cripples him
also the fear of his identity as batman when he made the mistake of not digging deeper cause he thought riddler wasonto him, he knows the second his identity is out its over, it really feels like a great setup for scarecrow, to manipulate and expose these fears, i really want 2 and 3 to be court of owls then finish it off with scarecrow, then mixing in little things like hush, dent etc
I saw the movie last night and I still think about Robert doing an impeccable job. I went in without expectations and I came out satisfied.
Agreed.
I loved when he escaped from GCPD and didn’t stick the landing. Making Batman not be perfect at all times worked so well.
Jeffrey Wrights Gordon is the unsung MVP of this movie, Batman and Gordon’s scenes together are electrifying, even more so than Catwoman 🤣😂 bromance all the way
OMG my friend and I were saying the same thing their chemistry was amazing and they sold that they really trusted eachother
Agreed, Batman and Gordon’s relationship was the highlight for me as well, their banter was top notch.
One of my favorite scenes was Gordon posturing like he was in a heated argument with Batman for the cops to see - but they were just talking. Jeffrey Wright was brilliant.
I loved the scene of them in the police building, trying to figure out how to get him out of the building
Was thinking the same thing.

“The whole point is you’re not supposed to know”
Uh… joe chill!? It’s ALWAYS been him, movies just altered that. Even when Bruce found out who it was, it was a great moment for him to not avenge them in favor of upholding his no kill rule.
Yeah I think Grace forgot that the Nolan trilogy clearly shows this…. Along with a big chunk of comics.
@@breebree9319 Good point.

Pattinson was so good as Batman, he added such a unique tortured and reserved aspect to the character! And the fight scenes were so well choreographed - and holy shit was Riddler scary
Saw it yesterday, absolutely awesome
I really liked the end where batman realized that he has to not only scare and punish criminals but also be seen how he actually wants to help people and be a better role model.
Basically let his inner/real motives be seen.
That was nice evolution in one film.
The Joker scene didn't hit like it should've/could've. The Joker scene in Batman Begins was better
That scene was unnecessary
I think of Batman walking slowly as Jason Vorhees stalking his prey. No matter how far away you think you've gotten from him, he only needs to walk to eventually catch up to you. So good!
This movie really appeals to those of us who love deep dark artwork. So much metaphor in this film that spoke to the current problems in western society. Best DC film ever.
This movie made me cry tears of joy. I honestly loved the third act and that tease ...CHILLS. i loved what they did with the suit ,making it a literal knight suit with those chain sounds ! A literal DARK KNIGHT !!
I will admit, when he was saving all those people, it put me on the verge of tears
We got one!"
Which is a shame, the Movie had the confidence to do all that other stuff, but they couldn't resist..
Doesn't take away from the movie though.

I had no idea that Falcone was Selina’s father. I was genuinely shocked.
Right next to the dark knight for me. Really enjoyed and loved how Batman IS the character and focus. We gotten enough of Bruce in other movies and now after this im ready to see Bruce side be fleshed out in the sequel after these events.

The Joker 100% had the white skin, red lips and green hair. He looked like the Joker from the Arkham games. At least from what I saw
"What is this, Good Cop, Bat-shit Cop?!". Loved that line lol
I loved the scene in the beginning of the criminals scared of Batman, it was so cool! In general I really loved this movie a lot, definitely gonna see it again.
@Ironman kv Shush.
The joker was pointless and even his laugh sounded silly
I actually appreciated that seen a lot . It was just enough to get you excited.
If it aint jaquins joker then please dont force another joker, it was laughable really
them revealing all the wayne and arkham stuff is basically a setup for the Court of Owls.. we probably won't see joker until the 3rd film
It came out of nowhere. There was a total tone shift after riddler was captured. I didn't like it, could have gone a different way
@@e3vL1 I agree there was a tone shift but I don't think it was bad
I loved the entire movie. That 3rd act was necessary for Batman to grow. It actually shows him grow from vengeance to hope.
I didn't expect multiple comic favorite moments to come to life like this. just wow!
Best Batman movie hands down . More of this please
More spin offs and sequels please 🙏🏼
I love how excited you’re about this movie Grace. It’ll be timeless 🦇
Riddler got those cards on Etsy, confirmed.
That's some dark Etsy store then XD
When Batman finally came out of the shadows in the way that all the other shown criminals feared he would during that intro montage, with his theme playing and the sound of his heavy boots dominating the entire room, it was perfect!! It even spooked the audience
It kind of didn't work entirely though. Everyone else was running scared from the shadows when batman wasn't even there. Then when he actually does come out of the shadows the thugs there are like "who are you"? Really liked the scene overall but that aspect seemed a bit off.
@@optimusprime3484 Yeah, I can see that. I wish they were terrified of him too
I agree with you Grace, and I think there are enough foundations laid to bring a change in Bruce's appearance.
The club music in both clubs was world class.
"Tiny muscle car."
I'm sorry...but this muscle car is literally like the biggest muscle car of all muscle cars that I've seen
Late comment, but Grace missed a perfect opportunity for a tie-in joke when she was talking about the flood and cleaning up Gotham and "dunk it in the bath." All I could think of was "This town needs an enema."
This Catwoman will go down in history as a fan favorite icon & Zoe has finally truly found her perfect roll🎉❤️
i agree
I saw the film last nigh and man was I all in, my wife and I enjoyed it, the beginning of the film set such a tone of how Batman is perceived in Gotham and we felt horror aspects of this film. Big shout out to the sound design team. *Side note... that parachute scene, I thought for sure he was going to break his neck. My man skid about 50 yards...on concrete side walks lol
I loved he hesitated before the jumped tho👍😂
That part and many others are what made me feel like this is the most human Batman we've probably have
OK for a “non-comics reader”( I don’t read the comics), I was genuinely surprised by Selina Kyle’s father being Falcone, & Martha comes from an Arkham family. I gasped !
Good cop batshit cop 🤣 Colin did great
"When that light hits the sky
Like a big pizza pie
That's a warning"
The one bone I have to pick with this movie is that Batman cannot glide or fly without taking a while to change his suit. The flying squirrel suit didn't do it for me
i get your point but you have to remember that it was his 2nd year as batman. He did not have the slick stealth suit. He was still a work in progress
I feel the Martha reveal was great because I think it made Bruce question his own sanity and going forward, it might give him more empathy for the inmates.
I never heard before about Martha being an Arkham so I was like holy crap, this is amazing. I love it.
Yeah they've done that before in a few stories either Long Halloween or Hush I think, and it was in the Telltale games
Geoff Johns wrote that on Batman Earth 1 origin
Some people seem to forget that Bruce Wayne is just in his 2nd year as The Batman. He is still learning his craft. Maybe in the next movies he'll try to act like a billionaire playboy. Let's just give him the benefit of the doubt here.
I just rewatched your spoiler free review after watching the film myself now you drop this; impeccable timing 👌🏼
If just seen it, my favourite parts was the opening in the train station, the funeral scene, the car chase and Selina vs Carmine Falcone.
26:13 Well... he is in Arkham so he can't put on his Joker face paint (if this Joker uses make up)
I loved seeing the detective side of Batman. And the Nirvana song was a perfect fit for this movie. I can’t stop listening to it!
