I really like the twist that he inspired his villains. He realizes that his whole vengeance message is inspiring the wrong people and at the end he turns to inspire hope. A good character arc that make me excited to see the future of this character and Pattinson’s acting when he thought the riddler found out his identity was so good. He looked so scared that his identity was found out, and then you see his facial expression change so fast when he realizes riddler doesn’t know.

To me, Batman’s lack of emotion in the “leaning over to look at Penguin” scene is way, _way_ , *_way_* , scarier than if he was pissed. And I think so for the same reason I think those big, thunking footsteps when he’s _walking_ , not _running_ ,are scarier than if he just jumped on you from behind- this version of Batman isn’t afraid of you getting away. See, I understand why Doug didn't like the climax, but I really liked it myself. The fact that the villain wasn't there in person I actually thought was a great touch. Often in real life, the worst villains are not the ones who do everything themselves, but rather the ones who inspired others to do evil (think Charles Manson). The reveal that the Riddler had all these followers ready to carry out his will, and they considered Batman as much of an inspiration as the Riddler was powerful. The climax was an emotional one where he's forced to confront his own dark side in a way we haven't really seen from Batman before. He learns what he's done wrong, and realizes what he can still do right. Even the choice of using water in the climax I thought was good because of the "wash away the filth" aspect, and bats don't generally do well in water.

So yeah, the Batmobile isn't spectacular, he wears like a jumpsuit and crashes horrifically cause he's not used to it, and the cops really, really don't trust him. You see how vulnerable he is, but he is trying to establish himself.
Also, I freaking loved that you could hear his footsteps. It just added to his fear factor. None of the other Batmans were ever really scary or that threatening, but this guy? Yeah, I'd be shaking in my boots.

It's a tough balancing act to get right, though, and at times it can feel a little *too* subdued -- Riddler's physical appearance being one such case, he's utterly unrecognizable. I would have appreciated some overt nod to the classic Riddler style, like maybe he uses a cheeky cartoon "intellectual gentleman" in a green bowler hat as an internet user icon. And truthfully all fans really want is a live action Killing Joke origin and that isn’t the easiest to pull off without making Joker the leading villain.
If it was up to me, since we never get a clear backstory- he should already be The Joker by the time we see him. He should be such a threat that Batman bringing him down earned blind loyalty from Gordon. But we should never get to see the full story, but only have it referenced in case files and conversations. Joker could say something about how he use to be a handsome fellow before “our little tussle at ACE left me with these beauty marks” but leave it at that.
They planted the seed that mental health is so poor in Gotham that even the Wayne’s were not spared. So in this case I think simply having Joker be born from the sickest and ugliest parts of Gotham is a good enough origin. DC just needs to take the time and not rush bringing him into the big picture too soon. If they save it for like The Batman 4 as a payoff for all his smaller appearances it could be epic

Anyone can be a sleeper agent Alfred or even Harvey Dent. He can even be subtly controlling Bruce Wayne for funding and Batman doesn't even know he's sending money. They can make him sympathetic too, he wants to control peoples mind because he wants to stop people from committing crimes and make evil people kill each other but he’s also willing to kill innocent people that get in his way. His tech could only work on a limited amount of people he needs some alive to control the mob. Also with mind control being introduced it can set up Poison ivy and her mind controlling plants

I think my vote for "best bit of cinematography" does actually go to that penguin car chase. But not quite for the reason you talked about. The batmobile is, throughout almost the entire scene, cloaked in shadow from all angles but the back. You only see the headlights, silhouette, and engine. Which considering he essentially built the thing to roar like a dragon, really hit home what it meant for him to make criminals fear the bat. I mean every other movie can't get enough of showing off their batmobiles. This one wanted to show off what the batmobile actually means, and it payed off in spades.

One of my favorite traits of Batman is that he always knows he’s the most serious one in the room, so when someone tries to one-up him he acts like a smartass. Like penguin is shitting his pants terrified in his car but instead of angirly running towards him and ripping him out of the car he slowly walks to the car and just looks at him, keeping it so suspenseful.

I like how Batman loses in this one. Batman is usually seen as unstoppable. Unbreakable. Undefeated.
So for him to catch the Riddler but miss the true plot was a good idea. It shows his inexperience and highlights his faults and how much he still has to learn. Also by losing the battle, but still continuing to help, that highlights his unbreakable spirit more than if he had defeated the Riddler.
I just like the chances taken in this story. There were a lot taken and most of them played off big time. And the use of lighting/ shadows in the film was masterful. I'm one of the few people who don't like the Dark Knight Trilogy, but I LOVE this Batman.

With this movie, I think it’s safe to say Michael Giacchino’s Batman theme is the best one. Takes inspiration from Elfman’s gothic motif and Hans Zimmer’s action-focused motif, and does something new with the “inspiring/emotional” motif. If the latter makes sense, that is.

Everything after the Riddler is captured has that "Dear God this movie is still going" quality to it and it just gets worse as it goes on. Before that my biggest complaint is the car chase ultimately being pointless. Like you say, people died and for no good reason, he could have just hit up the Penguin later.

    • @gamemediafan1714
      @gamemediafan1714 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think the issue that people like you and Doug had were from a fact that's becoming harder and harder to ignore: as great of a character as the Joker is, he is HEAVILY oversaturated in cinema.
If we're going to count the amount of versions of the Joker we've gotten in live action film specifically, then we've gotten FIVE different versions of the character in 33 years. Now that may SOUND like a small number, but trust me it really isn't when you look over DC's filmography (we got Leto, Phoenix, and Kheogan in the span of not even ten years), especially considering the fact that one of these five versions has their own movie (with a sequel on the way), and one of them COMPLETELY sucks (the DCEU version played by Leto).
Fact is: If WB is going to continue to do Batman movies as a priority for DC, they should at the very least use villains that have either been barely used or not used at all in film. Yeah this movie used Penguin, Riddler, and Falcone as villains, and they're all villains we've seen adapted into film before, but it's been quite a while since we saw them. Before Farel and Dano, we only had Devito and Carrey from the 90's as Penguin and Riddler represented in live action film. I'd LOVE for The Batman 2 (or whatever it'll be called) to utilize villains like Proffeser Pyg, Mad Hatter, etc. In fact considering how the Nolan trilogy wasted Scarecrow, I would say that Reeves should use him for a sequel.
But when it comes to the Joker: people have just had ENOUGH of him. And it's so weird saying that about a character that's so popular and well-liked, but it's the truth.

i loved this movie. it has one of the best shots that you don't see as often as you used to. my favorite shot in the film is when Batman's making his way to Falcone, and the power goes out. the camera focuses on a hallway that goes pitch black and you can't see anything except for when the muzzle flash from a gun is fired, and you only see glimpses of Bats beating up the guards. from both a cinematography and artistic standpoint, that shot alone got me hyped
