Harley-Davidson Dealer Fees are Out of Control (Don't Get Sucked In)

  • Harley-Davidson dealer fees will ruin the perfect bike, the advertised price may look good but when you sit down to do the paper work the price jumps dramatically. You shouldn't be paying a ridiculous amount on top of your Harley-Davidson motorcycle purchase especially if it's used. Sometimes you can't help that your perfect used Harley is the hands of Harley-Davidson dealer, but there are some things you can do. If the Harley dealer is trying to add on dealer fees, call them out and ask a ton of questions.
You might be able to get them waived, if not the hardest thing to do is walk away from the perfect bike.

The toughest part about getting the “right” deal at the time and place you want it is having the discipline to be willing to walk away. If you can’t get what you want, at the price point you think is fair and honest, you have to be willing to find it at another dealer or at another time. Just walk away.

I was looking at a used road king a couple years ago and the dealership wanted to tack on an $800 prep fee, which they add on to all used bikes. I asked what it was for. They said that fee is their average cost to get a trade in ready to go so oil change, new tires, etc. I took my trade back the next week to see if we could work out a deal. They looked at my trade and gave me a fair figure to start then noting it needed tires, oil change and state inspection, started taking the cost of those off the trade value. I asked if they were gonna charge the next guy the $800 fee when they sold my trade. They said they would. Essentially they were double dipping. I politely told the salesman they were trying to screw me and I won’t do business with them.

I had the exact same experience at Conrad, Harley, Davidson, in Illinois. I refused to pay their safety fee on the used bike and then they tried to take away from my trade-in and I told him the same thing and then you’re going to have the new owner pay it too you’re like the government taxing us twice . Worst thing is that every person there acted like they had a attitude then and didn’t even care about us as a customer. I ended up going and buying a brand new bike at Illinois Harley but with outrageous high prep fee, but to justify that I got him to throw on a sissy bar and labor for nothing. I spent hours haggling at dealerships and still felt like I got ripped off, but maybe did a little less for doing so.

I was looking at a used bike at what used to be Ray Price HD in Raleigh, N.C. several years ago. A salesman came up with all the usual talk and I told him flat out I was not able to buy, I was just looking. He asked if I wanted to take the bike for a test ride. Well, sure. I'll take a ride whenever I get the chance. Rode it and when I came back he wanted to talk some more. Well, it wasn't a "talk" it was a hardcore sales pitch. The man was very aggressive. I could hardly get a word in edgewise. This sort of thing turns me off and especially did so since I told him I was not in a position to buy right up front. One thing I noticed, in all his fast talking, was that he was going to charge me a shipping fee. On a used bike? No way! I reminded him that I had told him I wasn't looking to buy and then he acted all upset, pretty much said I had wasted his time. I felt like if anyone's time was wasted, it was my own. He said he had motorcycles to sell, which meant he was pretty much done talking to me. I told him good luck with that, a comment he didn't seem to like at all. I started to find the manager and see what he thought of what had gone down. Then I thought, why bother? This guy is his own worse enemy. I checked back by a few weeks later and he no longer worked there. Wonder why?

No extended warranty ever for me. It's a rip off even if I didn't invalidate it in the first 1K miles by modification. Buy the thing, do NOT finance it for any more than it's worth and own it. Screw the HD dealers. They're(in general) thieves. If you need to finance a motorcycle for more than a year, think again before signing a debt note for it. It is a losing proposition. You don't really own it and you're gonna get burned. BTW, if "Eag;eMark" financing appears on your credit report, count on losing 50 or so points. They're considered a consumer finance company for high-risk borrowers. Do it through your own bank and stay away from HD dealer financing.

The last time (October 2023) they had the audacity to charge $1945.75 in fees plus an additional mystery deal add on of $755.61. I was looking to pick up a bike in 2022. My local HD dealer had a used bike I was interested in, but didn't list the price on the website. I filled out their online form requesting a price but they tried the hard sell of getting me on the phone, and trying to get me to come into the dealer. (I was looking to see if it was in the ball park of what I was willing to pay because I didn't want to waste their time, or mine) They flat out refused to give me a price unless I showed up in person, then they didn't have the bike they advertised and tried to talk me into something else.
I had also emailed a local Suzuki dealer, who gave me an out-the-door price over email. I went to the Suzuki dealer later that day and bought the bike. So, HD lost a sale by playing stupid games!

as for me, i have no intentions of ever buying a NEW Harley, i was 1 that dealers mistreated in the 90's and they went after the yuppies, several places wouldnt deal with me to sell me oil, then 1 dealer had a bike i liked, tried to work a deal, and I was offered peanuts for my old shovelhead, $600 claimed it was worn out, needed lots of work, they argued about transmission leak? I can't really give you my experience on that. I did go to my local Harley dealer here in australia, back in 2014. I ordered a Softail with a Screaming Eagle 120ci motor, ape hangers, king & queen seat/sissy bat (or rather Harley's take on a king & queen seat/sissy bar). $50,000. I was knocked back on finance. I went out, found a 1997 Softail Custom with apes etc & a dodgy gearbox for $13,000. Bought a S&S 124ci crate engine $10,000 & a Jims Fat 5 Overdrive $5,000. So for $28,000 I got almost the same bike, but instead of a Twin Cam, I had a brand new Evo engine & a bulletproof gearbox. I love that bike. More than the Twin Cam I almost bought. I am still friends with the dealership boys. They are great people. My only gripe is they won't look at any bike built before 2000

The dealers & bike shops are going to have more & more leverage. Unfortunately, those that are first time buyers are going to be more compelled to buying from a dealer thinking that it is safer to buy from them and I for one don't trust them. Less than 1 month I heard a noise between 3-4k rpm’s, took it in and they found that the crank (which was replaced in October of ‘22) had was to much run out causing the piston skirts to slap the cylinder walls. Now the dealer has sent my heads and jugs out to Zippers to be redone, the dealer is putting in a performance crank, which should have been put in before. This is all on their dime which they didn’t want to do but after lots of talks they decided to do. Mind you this is my first Harley that I have bought from a dealer and probably my last. Maybe our rules are a little different up here in the Great White North. Either way, I've cultivated a great relationship with the staff at the dealer and still own both bikes.

I’ve purchased several Harley-Davidson motorcycles new. I shopped around at different dealers to compare prices. Now upfront, I knew about how much the dealers were paying. I knew they needed a profit. But they weren’t going to get it all from me. I purchased a 2009 Road Glide because of the new frame. I got a good deal. I upgraded in 2021 to the new 2021 Road Glide Standard after shopping around to get a good deal.
That’s the secret. Shop around and don’t be afraid to walk!

I know we often blame the dealers for the whole additional fee situation. My opinion is that the root issue here is with Harley corporate. They force dealers to invest in these extravagant and expensive buildings, staffing matrix and a ton of other required expenses. All unnecessary in my opinion. My local dealer is a true Mom and Pop operation from the 40’s. Owner tells me all the time about the pressure from corporate.

No word yet as to how much the fee will be, except that it may be less for females (reportedly because on average they are smaller than men and therefore take up less space and consume less oxygen - not sure where that leaves non-binary folks). Anyways, just wanted to give y'all a heads up to bring some cash (cash only) next time you drop in at you favorite H-D dealership. Will keep you posted as soon as I find out more.

If you don't know enough about Harleys to look the motorcycle over and ask questions, ask the owner if he will take it to a mechanic of your choice to inspect it. If the motorcycle is dirty and the owner starts, well it needs this and that walk away.
