I was having this issue and AAMCO quoted me $800 to fix it and they wanted to have it for over a week. They tried to sell me an entire new remanufactured shift linkage. Turned out it was just these two bolts loose. You just saved me hella money and time!
Brother, I can not tell you how this just saved my life. I was driving my 2006 f350 and a bolt fell out onto my foot. I am by no means a mechanic so i started to freak out and then my wife pulled up this video. If you simply follow every step this man gives, a dummy could fix this problem. He made it so easy and he was absolutely right about everything he said. The truck shifts beautifully now thanks to you. Appreciate it.
You saved me my G!!!🙌🏾. A hour ago my 2000 F150 XL stop going into park and was always clunking when I shift. I drove back home thinking my transmission was going out. Found your video on TH-cam and just like you said. One of my T30 screws fell out completely and the other one was half way unscrewed. 😬 Thanks 🙏🏾🙌🏾
Dude your video is timeless, it’s 2022 and I just solved my months long issue with my 2004 V-10 Excursion after watching your video. Bolt was loose and needed to be tightened. Took me less than 10 minutes. Thank you!
great fix, after a new neutral safety switch installed problem still existed. Removed said screws, installed threadlock and re-installed screws and bingo all good. Probably didn't need switch but an easy $50 learning process. Both screws were loose as described. Thanks again
I found the screw that you had missing on my floor. Didn’t know what it belonged to so I set it aside to continue figuring out how to fix my 2003 Ford Explorer sport. I’ve watched at least 5 different videos, none of which helped me solved my issue. Although I learned a lot from all the videos I watched, this was the one that helped. You held up that screw and I was all “omg.... I know that screw!” I put it in where you said and it fixed my issue. I appreciate this video to the max. Thank you so much!!
The bolt that goes into this piece is a M 6 and it is 20m long. I bought a flanged grade 8 bolt, and put some lock tight. This shifter ended up tighter than a nun on Sunday mass!!! Thanks for the help
Why I did not find you sooner? Had the same issue ( truck starting sometimes and sometimes it woudn't and difficulty engaging park and the other shift positions)in my 1999 F350 gas V10 , the problem was getting worse and I changed the battery and the first mechanic changed the starter and a bunch of other things ( unrelated) so I spent over $ 3000. The issue continued so I went to another mechanic and he told me he had to order some parts from the dealer, a new starter and some cable that was damaged . I was going to go back to them tomorrow...but I watched your video....and found the issue ...the 2 fu ck ing screws were loose....I tight em and is perfect now. I was ripped off once and was going to be ra pe d twice....because of 2 loose screws. You saved my a s s . Thanks a lot
I panicked sooooooo much and calmed down right away with that bolt in my hand and my truck not parking anymore and turning back on. Thank you so much for this video. Everything what was wrong with it was covered in here.
Dude you saved my bacon! I had the exact same problem on my Ford Ranger 2000. The screw was not gone but both were so loose they were almost out. This was so hard to film but I for one am so glad you did this. Totally worth the effort, I'm so grateful.
Thanks, fixed the problem for only the cost of the effort. The most difficult thing was fitting under the dash without being a contortionist. Was at first dismayed to see both torq head bolts in place. Then I jiggled the shift lever and saw that on bolt had backed out and was loose. Found the other one was also loose. Tightened both bolts and now shift lever works like the day in came from the factory. This began as occasional not starting in park making me think neutral safety switch on transmission was failing. So I bought a new one and if it ever goes bad I am ready.
I have a 97 Expedition with the same problem. If it isn't a loose plate, is there any other way to repair like adjusting the the screw/wheel on the cable?
thanks a million for creating and sharing this video. I was able to fix my e150 van which had the same issue. Why is there no lock washer? Stupid engineering. Seriously thank you for taking the time to create this video. it is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the video. I was going to have a mobile mechanic come out and look at it. Was going to charge me just to come out. Thought it was a bigger problem. Saved me a great deal of money time and headaches
Thank you, corrected the issue with ease. Also, fyi let a friend borrow the t30 I had in my kit, so only had a t25, it worked fine. I don't recommend using the wrong size bits due to stripping, but just don't go crazy and it fit plenty snug, use at your own risk though. Also subscribed, feel like if anything actually helps that should be automatic
Any recommendations if the screw won't go into the hole? It's like the two components are not flush but I can't get in there to see down the hole. Do I need to be in reverse? Does my e-brake need to be disengaged? Im attempting with the the gear in between park and reverse.
Take the one next to it out and try it thats what I did if that doesn't work it may be a trip to lowes or home depot for one. I would place the vehicle in to neutral. And engage the ebrake in order to not roll the car
@@CHASINGPROFITS Dude you rock! I put it in neutral and had to push the bracket up to get it flush with the other piece. Got it in and tightened the other bolt as it was a bit loose. Worked perfectly. Thanks for the quick response and for making the video!
Bless u bro! I got my alley ranch set and went right to it. My panal was already off since its a 2000 f150 i guess previous owner left it off lol. But i went right to the screws and both were loose. I tighten hard as i could and Bamo im back in park . Thanks Bud!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Best part was your use of the easy to replace fastener from the electrical connector! My two bolts loosened enough such that the lever was strong enough to snap the head off one bolt. But that bolt was already lose and unscrewed by hand. Only two problems for me. First one is I am 6 foot 250 lbs and scrunching under the dash is fun. Second problem is the temperature is in the 20's. Cold tools are no fun! I will redo this with locktite when it gets warm! Paid just under $4 for another bolt, put it in the connector, buttoned up the fuse panel and I am good to go!
Thanks so much. I have a 1999 Ford Taurus with the same problem, I changed the shifter bushings and it didn't help. Not until I found your video. I was lucky that my screws were still there, but just barely hanging on.
Hope you can help!! My '99 Ford Econoline van is doing the same thing...have to start it in "neutral" . I am going to check those screws but...would that also be the reason that even when keys are shut off the van starts rolling if I am not on level ground. Would this fix that problem or is this a costly transmission repair???
I have an econoline and have the same problems you describe. Tightening these two star shaped screws fixed my van rolling away while in park. You can do it. T30 bit and some wobble extensions is what I needed to use.
Yes it will fix it if that bracket is loose. The bolts shown in the video hold that bracket tight and that bracket is what actually moves the transmission shift cable. When that's loose you're not shifting all the way into park. On my 2001 Mazda B3000 (basically Ford Ranger), it's the same bracket, and sometimes it would pop into reverse and I couldn't start it in park. After tightening those it works fine. I'd suggest turning key to ON without starting it, push down on the brake lever and shift it down into neutral, remove one screw at a time and put some blue loctite on the threads. Shifting down into neutral takes some tension off the cable. That should stop them from backing out.
Thank you appreciate your help thanks for the idea to swap one screw what are you don’t really need it came in handy. I had one broken screw luckily it came out easily and I swapped it with one not too far away like you did thank you have a great day. 👏
my ford fusion would not start and same problem with it not wanting to go on park. But it also marks a different gear on the dashboard than what it says on the gear shift knob. Starting the car on neutral really helped turn on my car and get me home until i can fix it.
Mine did this at first for awhile but now the shifter lever won't go into reverse and easily slides threw the gears intill I get to drive it locks into drive like normal I was thinking shifter cable but now you have me thinking could both screws Fallin out and caused this?

what if batteries dead if that things happen then it’s only gonna crank over when it’s in neutral but the battery is so dead. It won’t start but it won’t start and park click click click click. That’s it put it neutral and it was like turning over but dragon because it was dead in the battery I tried my battery pack, but I don’t think it’s strong enough to charge it.
I have a question... first I do have this shifter problem but my question is with this problem and a bad ignition switch would it make it seem like the fuel pump is bad ??
Try turning your ignition on but don’t crank it and listen for a little buzzing sound if you here a buzz for like 2-3 seconds your fuel pump is probably fine

I just fixed the same problem on a 97 Expedition. I didn’t need to remove the bottom dash plastic. I could reach the screws from under neath the dashboard without removing anything.
I'm about to go look at my 97 f-150. hoping its the same issue. starts in neutral but not in park. update: fixed the issue 100%..This guys video was a life saver, took 5 minutes to fix.
