How Bad was Mario & Luigi Paper Jam?

- Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is an often overlooked game in a beloved series. Most peope see the game as a step in the right direction after the sub par Dream Team, Paper Jam was unable to bring back the same heights as previous games in the series. I want to see if the game is actually an underrated classic or just another blunder.

I was really proud of how much I've improved in this video so I hope you like it :)
Like I said, I plan to continue these videos with other games in the series so stay tuned.
to all the dream team fans, don’t worry, I plan to go in on dream team with a fresh slate when I make the video.
even though I use it as the butt of the joke a few times, I’m not going to hate it based on my one playthrough as a kid I plan to have fun with the game :)
@@murmilio42069honestly i think dream team isnt bad but its not my favorite ever, its just more bis which isnt fun

Ima be real with you bro I got this game just to see what's up with it I used ur video as a guide and honestly gameplay wise the problems u said u had I think it's just a skill issue for u bro amd the level up system is more based off superstar saga please get better at these kinda games a boss battle takes me 5 -7mins tops I already did 3 of them
I’ve never met anyone who considered dream team a negative instalment . Feel it’s better than paper jam because it has unique characters and locations
Even though I like Dream Team, it definitely has some notable flaws and I can understand why some people dislike it since the game is overly handholdy to the point where it feels like an insult to the player’s intelligence at times, the over abundance of tutorials gets annoying especially if you’re replaying the game (I also don’t get why they weren’t removed in hard mode), the beginning part of the game is painfully slow, the Dream World sections can feel like a chore at times, and the gyro controls can sometimes be a pain to work with.
The handholding can be averted since Dream Team is pretty difficult especially in Hard Mode
For sure😊
As we see between dream team and paper jam, we see that paper jam have even more animations and the better font of everything
Dream Team main flaw should be good to use as an example of *how not make a tutorial* . Tutorials should go to the point instead of going around and be redundant, and much less should be 4minutes custcenes. Maybe just the first time a fun custcene and now on a message which pop up.
DREAM TEAM IS NOT A BAD INSTALLMENT.
Big Facts
bro i swear people underestimate how good dream team is, i never owned a 3ds but still, everytime i wanted to watch a nice longplay videos when i was 9, it would be this game
Fans to Dream Team now: perhaps I treated you too harshly
At least it came out when Nintendo didn't have its ban on new characters.
that dream team take is abysmal
Dream team is fire
Best game in the series
I actually liked paper jam
Dream team is underrated as hell
I'm of the idea of anyone's opinion being valid, but a lot of people liked Dream Team, i personally thought it was a fairly solid installment, not the best but pretty good in its own right so can we please keep the bashing on something more actuslyl deserving of it, i.e. Sticker Star
Preach! I won't stand for this Dream Team slander!
A bit of a hot take but I thought Mario and Luigi dream team was a good game other than the 2d dreams it was what Mario and Luigi is about an original story with original characters and great music😊
Thats not really a hot take, as a pretty big part of the community including me likes this game
3:21 ex fuckin scuse me?
I just finished paper jam minutes ago as I found a new copy for cheap. Story wise. It’s trash. Game play wise it’s pretty fire. Maybe because I heard this game was bad my, so my expectations were low. I loved all these games.
What do you expect for a Mario and Luigi game? It always have bad stories
@@therealjaystone2344 lol you're kidding.
I legitimately think paper jam has the best base gameplay and battles of the series. The abilities are actually fun to use in the overworld and paper mario in battle with his unique mechanics is super fun
Let's not forget that Paper Jam also failed to deliver even on the Mario & Luigi side of things. There were no M&L-specific characters other than Starlow, who has zero context other than "i'm just here". There were no continuity nods to the previous M&L games whether in the form of returning characters, species, etc and no brand new characters that were a core part of each other M&L game. I'm a bit worried about the implication that Dream Team is worse because it still had all those things, it iterated on the Elite Trio from BIS, brought back Popple from Superstar Saga and Kylie Koopa from Partners in Time as well as not only Broque Monsieur and Madame but new members of their species and even regular NPCs of that species, Beanish NPCs, and plenty of original ones too. For that reason Paper Jam is the only M&L game I consider an insult to the series it's part of, because it doesn't even bring back characters that would make total sense for the story it's trying to tell, like the Elite Trio. Not even TOADSWORTH. It is very blatantly sterilized and keeping only mainline characters beyond Starlow was clearly a bigger priority than any sort of consistency with all the other games including Dream Team. All things considered I'll defend Dream Team any day but Paper Jam gets no sympathy from me. At least Dream Team knew what series it was part of, story and character-wise. Paper Jam seemed to forget that M&L games are supposed to have characters beyond the core Mario cast and Starlow (and the previous games had context to why Starlow was there but PJ is just like "i'm here just because")
Even the M&L REMAKES made more original contributions to M&L's continuity than Paper Jam did. Say what you will about the gameplay of those side stories (it wasn't all that special) but those side stories made more continuity nods to M&L games outside the one being remade than Paper Jam bothered to do and that's actually impressively sad. The BIS remake even had three COMPLETELY ORIGINAL, BRAND NEW VILLAINS with designs as wild as M&L's wildest. Paper Jam has no excuse for how sterile and bland it is. The Paper Mario rep is bad, but the M&L rep is just as bad, and I'm baffled at how AlphaDream could have chosen to do this for exactly one game even if the interviews said it was their choice. It's just too out of character for the studio that otherwise is very passionate about the original lore and characters they've made for the M&L games, and spoke that way about every other entry besides PJ. I'm really not sure what sin Dream Team could have committed that makes it even close to PJ's level of bad, let alone worse. Its biggest flaw is being slow at times and the tutorials being a bit overbearing, at least it has an original story to tell and a cast of characters & settings befitting of a M&L game instead of a NSMB game. Oh and also it has TOADSWORTH (seriously you CAN'T have a M&L game without him, why did they kill his perfect attendance with PJ, whyyyyy)
The reason why Paper jam was bad is because, Dream team costed them soo much money with expectations to sell like BIS ( 3-4 million copies ) but it sold only 2 million, so they wanted to make a Quick cash grab by selling it to paper mario community, they didn't want to add any fun characters not because they coudn't, but because it would be "to expensive and cost to much time", Paper jam was boring on porpuse
My Headcanon: Paper Mario and Mario are the same and yet not the same. Normal Mario does go on the all paper Mario adventures but as Normal world form. The Paper Mario Book containing the Paper World in peach’s castle, is a book that someone used the Fold of Life on to create another universe just like the Normal Mario universe but it’s all made out of Paper. Paper Mario has the same history and adventures as Normal Mario but everything is Paper.
The dream team slander is real for this one
I never got why so many people always said DT and PJ are bad.
Like, SS, PiT and BiS are BETTER, yes, but that does not make DT and PJ bad at all, they're just less great, but still more than enjoyable
Wsy better than sticker star for sure😊
Personally I disliked PiT the most. I'd have a harder time ranking the rest but PiT is at the bottom for me.
I completely agree. In fact, I’ve actually grown to hate Origami King More then Sticker Star and Paper Jam because Paper Jam, and I stand by that. That’s because despite how generic Paper Jam can be, it was clear that Alpadream knew how to work around the creative limitations to make a good game. By contrast; Origami King tried way too hard to to appeal to fans, so much so to the point where anything that felt like a return to form was such an afterthought that almost came as insulting, as if the game is only TAUNTING fans with what they want and not actually committing to it. At least with Sticker Star it was so bad that it was good (at least in my opinion).
I think that people call paper jam and pit the worst in the series, not really dream team
@@voiky752 i still don't get why so many people disliked PiT, it's a wonderful game
I never had a problem with "Paper Jam", it wasn't my favorite installment in the series, but I really enjoyed the concept and was excited for it to come out.
It might be the "worst" in the series, but its not bad. Story and Characters are generic af, but gameplay and bosses are really fun
@@falco05 I think the main reason why people didn't like it was because they didn't have any new, original characters for it. I'm guessing they just wanted to explore the idea of the "M&L" characters interacting with the "Paper Mario" characters, which is something I actually really enjoyed out of the game.
Man, I hope this series makes a comeback! Honestly, Paper Jam is NOT a bad game. I think it's just a little lame that they didn't do any cool unique locations or make good use of Paper Mario's unique enemies. I feel Nintendo was knee deep into the "let's ONLY use generic Mario enemies and locations" phase at the time of its release. Having a new Mario & Luigi game for the Switch (or Switch 2) would be PERFECT! Imagine being able to do co-op!? You can play single player and have a friend (or brother) jump in at any time? It's an amazing idea that I'm shocked Nintendo hasn't jumped on it yet!
the boss settin the record STRAIGHT!
Holy shit thank you, finally someone mentions how bad the level balancing is in this game. I remember it was the Paper Petey Piranha fight was when I noticed that bosses were starting to get... long. But it made no sense to me cause I was only like 2 levels below it. It didn't matter though because I was still getting my ass beat. I thought of changing to easy mode but I just endured it. The EXP battle cards were basically essential in a playthrough of Paper Jam. Something I noticed you didn't mention was that the signals for which enemy is going to attack who is severely worse in this game than an all the other ones. I feel like this game relies too much on the boo cookies that basically only serve to be a tutorial for dodging enemy attacks, instead of it being recognizable and having the reflexes to dodge on time.
This game was such a slog to go through, I'm glad to say I finally beat it, but holy shit it was a waste of time, nothing happened and nothing felt satisfying.
But anyways great video man
Already gonna dislike because you hate Dream Team

11:36 Sticker star was the game they refirece the most while they were making this game
it's funny and sad to say that in this game, where it's a crossover of Both M&L and Paper Mario, there was NO Original Characters from both series, all vanished from existence with the exception of Starlow, even Toadsworth which is a Mainline Character and was on all M&L Games (even he was in Paper Mario TTYD)
Plus the x button is already used for making the trio jump at once
I'm not sure if it's just me but most the fights didn't feel that long for me.
Though I always try max my attack in these games so.....
(I 100% agree with the paper toads though)
No way bro crossed out Dream Team, come on man
Actually Luigi unleashed 6 Actual characters as in Paper Luigi is in the game but only for listening to the soundtrack in the game.

Here's a tip to keep up with levels:
Kill everything. When there's nothing left in the area, go back later. Don't waste time on quests killing everything though.
I love how more than half of these comments are about Dream Team when this is a Paper Jam video
I don't remember having to grind, that's weird lol
The fuck, bro really said Dream Team was bad.
4:11 You just an inpatient gamer
When they announced origami king I felt all hope was lost for anymore Mario rpgs. It still blows my mind that Nintendo saw the overwhelming backlash for both modern Paper Mario games and decided that making another one like it instead of going back to old formula that literally everyone loved was the best course of action.
Maybe the SMRPG remake is a glimmer of hope but it's a sad time for people who grew up with these games
Origami King is good though
Yeah i feel like theres just a lack of effort put into smaller titles like the mario & luigi games. Its way easier to copy paste a game with a couple new power ups than creating a brand new unique world characters and story.
I'm hoping SMRPG goes well but I am scared of them watering it down. Big daddy square will save us though
@@CassiusStelar I do think Origami King is p good. Doesnt feel like Paper Mario tho. More like Mario who is Paper
@@murmilio42069 dark themes (this time body horror, ooh!), One emotional moment that never fails to make me cry, funny villains, gameplay that always stumps me even on repeat playthroughs without actually being obtuse I'm just dense...
Yeah that's my entire checklist. That's what I learned to expect from Super, that's why I decided to trek backwards through TTYD, and what I'm currently experiencing in 64. I don't understand what you're getting at
@@CassiusStelar Ye TOK improved a lot just missed the mark for me. I still liked it and 100% the game, I just still missing having a great story with great combat.

Could you make a video about why Dream Team was bad? because it was one of if not my very favorite game as a kid, so I'd love to understand why most people dislike it so much
Yep its already planned. Starting my re-playthrough next week :)
Dream team is my 2nd favourite
Dafuq you say about Dream Team?
I actually liked Paper jam just due to its better pacing and fast forward.
Thing that pisses me off the most is that I couldn't 100% ot Just one boss before my 3ds broke, Alright but i do gotta say I did enjoy this game before knowing about the community about paper mario see look if i never knew about it I wouldn't think things has changed but since i do I start wonder will it ever going back? The remake doesn't count
Too dang long isnt a problem if you’re just patient.
There is no way that you said that not only Dream Team is trash, but you also said that Paper Jam is better than it in some way.
Yep I feel like this is pretty accurate.
Paper Jam introduced some cool new features like the fast forward button and the challenges, but the world and the characters are so bland
Who the hell was excited for Paper Jam though. I remember it being announced on that terrible Starfox muppet and Color Splash E3 and most people crucified it lmao
8:43 skill issue, i was 8 when i finished this and when i launched the game i was level 41!
Didn't Paper jam come out in the year of Luigi? How much better would it have been to have paper Luigi accompany the bros instead of the mute paper Mario?
The game came out in like 2015 or 16 i think, the yearcof luigi was 2013 i think
this is kinda a hot take but I love this game. Prolly just bc its super nostalgic for me but either way, I loved it
You make some great points here! The overly legnthy and repetitive battles are what killed the Mario & Luigi series for me. Enjoyed the first for its novelty, the second was pretty mid. Only made it half way through Bowser's inside story. I could do it no longer. Played the demo for the 4th game, and wow, so slow and annoying with the tutorials. I'm looking forward to that Thousand Year Door remake; good riddance to this series that killed the Mario RPG games for me.
That’s a pity. M&L is fantastic.
I’m happy you like it, and have more good games in the series than us Paper Mario’ers, but that battle system just wears on me quick.
Looking back at this game, the 3DS artstyle for the Mario and Luigi games have aged so poorly. The original on GBA and especially the DS games had such a timeless artsyle yet the 3DS games just look so dated
I enjoyed Paper Jam, as a game, but not as a Mario and Luigi game
Papercraft Battle... AWFULL THING ans the S Rank God that Impossible
19:00 i honestly don't see how paper luigi would have made this game better gameplay-wise he'd probably make things worse given that you control paper with the y button in this game paper luigi would have likely be controlled with the x button meaning You would have to keep pressing all 4 face buttons during combat does sound confortable to you sure it kind of sucks that hes not in the story at all but givin how this is design he would not have work
dream team might actually be debatably the best one
I liked paper jam. I watched it growing up. But it’s nice to hear other people say about the game (aka the game ha a a lot of bugs)
I only think that dream team is bad because of the battle system like who had to add motion controls?! Glad they removed it in paper jam and not to mention zeekeeper.
Morton, iggy, Lemmy fight is fucking horse shit. I despise insta-kill mechanics with a burning passion!!! 😡
mother *>* earthbound
the toad rescue missions are awful i agree
no more mario in paper mario when
another banger video murmilio!!!!!
It may be the weakest in the series, but I'd never consider Paper Jam to be a bad game. Aside from the creativity, I disagree with pretty much every point made here. I never thought the combat was slow. Maybe bosses did take longer for me, but I never struggled nor did I care because I was having fun fighting them. I also never noticed any level balancing problems when playing. The series as a whole mostly relied on gear and story events to keep up with enemy strength anyway. I actually found papercraft battles to be an improvement over giant battles. They're a bit difficult to get the hang of, but I'll take that over unresponsive touch controls or jank as hell gyro controls. I personally like toad quests, but I can understand someone not liking them. As fun as I thought they were, they are pretty frequent. I wouldn’t pick Paper Jam over any other M&L game, but I'll certainly take it over the 3 most recent Paper Mario games because at least it put the gameplay first.
17:41
Actually the real reason why it became Paper Mario was due to the hardware limitations of the N64. Nintendo needed some RPGs for the system, Square Enix tried to port FF7 to the system but they were unsuccessful leading to them making it a PS1 exclusive and leading to an awkward moment between them and Nintendo. There was an EarthBound and Fire Emblem game for the N64 but they ended up getting cancelled. So Nintendo had to use the limitations of their own system and ended up creating Paper Mario, and the paper aesthetic was used for future games, some for the better like PMTYD and SPM and some for the worst like Sticker Star.
I tried to like Paper Jam, but I just couldn't, tried to finish it seeing as I finished all of the other Mario and Luigi games, but I ended up dropping it, probably won't return to it.
1:12 people are so dramatic, it needed an remake because to to decrease unecessary forced tutorials and to have the same art style as the previous remake and the 3D giant battle similar to the dream team and also you wouldn't need to have the limited items to go back to the battle and also it is cool having an another game with it like the previous remake
EARTHBOUND LETS GOOOOOOO
dream team is a masterpiece thi
This game feels like a solid 7. The battles themselves are still fun, but man the story is such a bore. What a shame.
I think the problem would not be the gameplay but the story For example, the need to make sure that if they are toads they are good while the koopas or goombas are the bad ones, remember how in the first paper Mario that There were different towns where Mario's enemies lived, but instead of being bad, they are peaceful people, some with jobs or others as if they were toads. And by removing what Paper Mario did, its essence was what destroyed Paper Mario fans, no more original characters or personalities. only good toads and bad goombas and koopas and the lack of Mario's companions more than a simple Reference I feel that Paper Jam is a good game but with wasted potential, remember how in Mario and Luigi, even the dream team had a new villain But in paper jam they decided to make the usual classic bowser kidnapping princess peach it doesn't bother me but it is from the main saga like the 2D and 3D games If at least there was a modification that makes the game fit well with the characteristic elements that Paper Mario was, it would be great.
i don't think paper jam was bad at all
Papercraft battles were far better and more fun than the shit giant battles in the Dream Team with bullshit gyro mechanics. Giant battles were probably the worst aspect of both Dream Team and Inside Story
12:02 hey the paper toad missions aren't bad at all if anything they're fun breaks from the normal game besides paper jam is still a good game regardless not great but still good
it wasnt. it wasnt bad
4:10 This is not a problem with the game bozo and proves my point of you being an inpatient gamer
I love dream team tho..
Disliked for hating paper jam and dream team, because these games are the bests and not bad
Edit: paper jam is my second favorite, the first one is supersaga
That's crazy ngl
Paper Jam's potential in my opinion was wasted and of course it had to be the worst because of Paper Mario and it's terrible rule of not putting in unique characters and just put in generic stuff. This could've been a great opportunity to clash both of the spin offs together but the way they did it ended up becoming bland and boring as hell. The music just doesn't add up to me either it's the worst out of the previous 4 entries. Sucks that it's the last original story out of the series (at least if nintendo could pick out Alphadream's torch and make another entry)
Paper Jam is like the best one!
I'm sorry but if you played easy mode and were 10 levels behind late game bosses that's just a skill issue, in my most recent gameplay I was NEVER that behind and I didn't go out of my way to defeat more enemies, I just defeated everyone in the current area and moved on just like you do in every single game

How was Dream Team garbage?
Well at its core, its a mario & luigi game which means good, some of the biggest issues are pacing and hand holding.
I have some other game mechanic issues but the biggest problem I think most people agree on is that the game feels like a big step back from its Bowsers Inside Story. So dissapointment fueled the flames.
My Dream Team Video is gonna cover all my gripes so stay tuned for that.

Im just gonna tag along with all this defense for Dream Team. You hate on it like its common knowledge it sucks, like its some kind of inside joke with the fans. But now you see that barely anyone thinks that and all your hate comes across as really jarring. Its been my favorite one since the day it came out, personally.
Big Facts
Dude I highly recommend playing this game I give it a 10 out 10 and it's highly addictive. This game sat in my son's collection for three years and I picked it up and tried and now I pretty much hate myself for not playing this sooner. This is a very nice hidden GEM if your lucky to own and it play it!
Yes, this game is stingy in handing out experience points, the worst of the series. Yes, this game is slow in leveling up party members, the worst in the series. And yes, I agree that the dodging commands should give an advantage, but it should not be a disadvantage when not using them. With all that being said, I too fought every enemy in the game, but I never had a problem fighting in the battles as you did. While I did lose quite a few times, and it did annoy me that I had to start all the way from the beginning, it never got so bad that I had to play in easy mode. As long as the gamer is encountering battles instead of avoiding them and learning the patterns to dodging, all enemies, from minions to bosses, are doable. I hate to be that guy, but as the internet says, "Git gud, scrub!"
Same goes for the papercraft battles. Yes, I ultimately don't see that point of them. They don't show off the hardware features like the giant battles did in Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team. At best, they are to give a break from the RPG battles. Again, though, they are all doable. Looking at the footage you captured, it look it took you more time to purposely kill yourself so you can skip than it would be to actually learn the mechanics and beat the papercrafts. Once again, I have to say, "Git gud, scrub!"
Dream Team is not bad, dislike just because you have a bad taste in actual good games. Dream Team is super good lol.
Paper Jam did nothing wrong.
The worst mario and luigi game, it's kind of mid.
I swear this guy has no skill, little patience (in bros attacks, trio attacks, paper toad missions, and papercraft battles), and fights enemies "here and there." No wonder why he is underleveled
Pretty bad
My main takeaway from this video is that you're too stubborn, impatient, and bad at video games to fully enjoy Paper Jam. I agree that this game isn't the greatest, but most of these points are superfluous to the gameplay and the game itself. Also, half of this video wasn't about Paper Jam. Also also, justice for Dream Team!
