  • The Columbia River Sockeye Fishery is one of the best fisheries the Columbia sees during the early summer months. These sockeye are heading upriver to spawn and catching them can be a challenge. In this video Charles from Addicted Fishing is going to show you how to rig a full bank fishing setup to target and catch Columbia River Sockeye. Bank fishing for sockeye and doing it right is something debated all over the internet. A lot of people will tell you that a sockeye won't bite. That is simply not the case, sockeye will 100% bite and can absolutely be caught without snagging or flossing them. Tune into to this full video to see the setup in action!

    Well done video! I used to catch them years ago in SE Alaska. I used a small double corky setup with pink yarn, 1/0 octopus hook and pencil lead on my spin rod. Once I mastered that, I used a 9 wt flyrod with floating main line and sink tip with a shrimp fly I tied on my vise. Both techniques worked very well.

    one thing I would suggest is when tying the egg loop, start wrapping the opposite direction so the line isn't pressed against the eye gap. starting "left handed" the line never touches the gap

      Oden Phillips yes where we find one we usually find the other to right now the water is on the high side and cooler then normal these fish are running the banks till the water starts to lower and we will have to adjust a little in depth to get back on them.

    Hmm 🤔 in b c we can’t use any more than one hook, so we use a steelhead float with a triple swivel then about four ft of leader then a hook with some wool just to float the hook off the bottom as the fish is holding in the river the line cuts across his mouth and passes along until stopping at the hook in his mouth and bingo! 🥳. We call it dental flossing!!

    Will this set work for fall run in the rogue river?

  • @MatanuskaHIGH
    @MatanuskaHIGH 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    In Alaska we floss. Lol that being said I’ve caught knik river sockeye on tiny shrimp and tiny pink spin n glo. And they swallowed it deep. So they do bite but in kenai we just floss cause why not. Combat fishing requires flossing. And current is way to strong.

      Can you explain why a ledge and where specifically to target on the ledge... Not asking for specific locations but a lot of people who are new don't know what structure to look for and where sockeye swim along the banks... Especially if they don't have a boat it's hard to know what the bottom is doing. Excellent tutorial BTW. This is exactly how I target sockeye from the bank and it is very effective. Good job Charles!

    • @charlesstahley240
      @charlesstahley240 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      E Lee depth finders can be key to finding these drop offs we have spent a lot of time cruising up and down this river so we have a good idea of where to be in the spots we fish but at one point we have scoped it out with a finder but the best way to figure out where the fish are is to have a couple rods with line counters and start staggering your lines at different depths using that line counter till you find fish.

    The thing about red salmon is they like swimming near the bank. They’re not like silver and king salmon. They like being up on the bank. That’s why fly fishing is best for them. I’ve spent countless hours catching them for sport/subsistence/ and commercial purposes in Alaska. If you just walk 4 feet out into the water and wait long enough I 100% guarantee a red salmon will smack into your ankles 😂😂 has happened to me many times 😂😂 obviously what you’re doing works and is great. I catch silvers and kings with a similar set up but I’m telling you I fully believe fly fishing is the best way to catch reds with a rod. Just my opinion. Great video tho!

    Ive fished 3 Alaskan rivers for 3 seasons, including Kenia, with this method. Fishing both kings and reds. Caught many kings near the salt, not 1 red. Ill keep trying. A 4th river this week, the Klutina has big king and copper river sockeyes. The reds have blue backs, not green. Trapper scotty,Alaskan

    • @littlegoobie
      @littlegoobie 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      klutina is too far inland for this to work on reds. THey generally clamp down and you'll never get one. That's the same reason you'll be pretty much skunked on the russian too if you fish this way. They don't bite/feed. You might get them where there's still salt water or if you're hitting a fresh school of fish just going up so downstream from soldotna, but even there, you'll have more success not using bait... The real issue is using baited hook is not allowed on most of kenai river. heheh.

    So I need a guy in a kayak? How do you cast a rig like this? I mean is that really bank fishing. Don’t get me wrong, love the video, but how do you get it done on your own?

    I’m assuming this method isn’t meant for a angler going solo

    • @danielcole8609
      @danielcole8609 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can do it solo

    • @charlesstahley240
      @charlesstahley240 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I’m running them solo I set my clicker on my reel then adjust my drag that it takes some pressure to get line to come out but not to easy so it keeps tension but if you do get a belly or to much slack line you can reel it up to get rid of it.

    What kind of water are you looking for for Sockey fishing?

      Derick Jahnk any beach that has ledge especially we find most of them in the 4 to 15ft range but mainly try to stick 8 to 12 but it all depends on your beach they have different lanes even on the same beach a 100yds up a guy could be running out to 40ft and for you to get in that lane you might be at 20 or at 60ft.

      Thanks for your interest... I was moving (lol) in my canoe...on Baker Lake. The Columbia is a bit far right now or maybe I am not quite desperate enough to make a four hour drive.

    Why don’t you guys use okuma surf rods to cast your lead out instead of using the kayak and a trolling rod?

    • @dennyking2741
      @dennyking2741 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because you'd tangle like crazy with a 3 sng setup like that casting.

    • @AddictedFishing
      @AddictedFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s hard to cast 3 glos

    • @charlesstahley240
      @charlesstahley240 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly I think the biggest advantage for me is just the peace of mind that my line isn’t tangled and I know I’m fishing also exactly where I want to be.

    • @350zcoug
      @350zcoug 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tangles aren’t that hard to not get. I use bead chains and snaps instead of the 3 ways. I’d guess the biggest reason they aren’t casting is it’s easier to keep the bait on the hook. Seen plenty of times people go to cast out and there’s 4 splashes. One from their spin glo setup and the other 3 are bait.

    Well I wasn't aware that it's legal to have someone else take your bait/lure out into the river in Oregon. It isn't legal in Washington.

    You all salmon fishermen, keep dreaming of Alaska fishing, I will continue to experience it daily. Truth hurts huh? Now enjoy your hatchery regulated fishing, and I will try to not tick off a big Kodiak brown bear fishing to close to his spot! Just another day fishing in Alaska!

  • @troyottosen8722

    This Romeo guy trying to compare our Alaskan fishing to the lower 48 is hilarious! Ask the addicted to fishing guys who came to yakutat AK, how it compares? And they got just a sample! They flew by jet from Seattle to yakutat, imagine “ really fishing wild Alaska by floatplane”! No roads no crowds, just big brown bears fishing with you? My real Alaska! You all down south keep dreaming Alaska fishing, I will live and see it daily! Chew on those facts!
