    The idea to convert the oil well areas to campsites has great merit. In the US we have the Rails to Trails Conservancy which converts old rail lines into multiuse public trails. They are wide and mostly flat because they are built in the defunct railroad cut. They are very popular and ever expanding around the country.

    • @linebrunelle1004
      @linebrunelle1004 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      there's a trail across all of Canada and a few off shoots North and South. One of those is in Alberta where Steve lives. The trail is an old railway that goes through small towns and beautiful natural settings. From Edmonton to Cold Lake. Come check it out

    Hey I'm "Oil Field People" I did some digging, these wells are owned by Long Run Exploration LTD
    The wells were drilled in 2005-2009 and have been suspended in 2018, Long run does still appear to be operating so these wells aren't "Abandoned" In the industry abandoning well means something completely different, when a well is abandoned that means the well is cemented off down hole and then usually cut 2 meters below ground and welded shut. In addition these days Oil and Gas companies have to put money aside upfront before drilling a well so that even if the company goes bust the well can be properly "Abandoned"

    I work in the environmental consulting industry, and do lots of remidiation/reclamation work. I really do love your plan, but I would say is the biggest concern is a lot of these abandoned oil rigs do have quite a bit of soil and groundwater contamination. That opens a lot of liability which a lot of people wouldn't be willing to take on. In order for the campground to happen the whole place would have to be remediated which can take a lot of time and a lot of money.

    • @chrisallen9154
      @chrisallen9154 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Of course the remediation will have to happen at a cost to the public because the government has no back bone to require the companies to post a bond for when they abandon the sites.

      Beyond Steve, one does seem to have good quality "bushcrafting" vids where people go off & make shelters, fire & either will bring food or catch & cook.
      Not everyone of those has annoying music.
      One of my favorites is "Swedwoods" on TH-cam.
      He looks like a couple folks I know in real life & has been cool to talk back & forth in his comment section.
      I guess give him a try.
      I forgot the Asian / Korean girl's YT channel name but there's one featuring an Asian women who does a bunch of various shelter builds & sometimes, catch & cook stuff ( mostly fish!)
      Greg Ovens is fun as well to watch especially for his various put together traps for fishing & other stuff & not so much music goes on in those.
      There's others.

    As someone who works for an oil company that properly reclaims the land when a well is no longer producing this is tough to see. Who is going to be responsible in cleaning up that site down the road? You guessed it. Alberta tax payers.

    Just an FYI. You should stay away from these sites. I work oil and gas across Canada. Decommissioned well sites can have gas seepage. You won't even know your in trouble till its to late and you're dead. H2s especially can be in low areas as it's heavier then air. Just best to avoid these kind of places. Cheers and stay safe .

    I’ve worked in the Texas oilfield since I was a kid, and still do.
    The well with the blue motor on it , I have not seen in probably 20 years. Can’t remember what they’re called, but I remember it has a rod string that has like an auger type design, when the motor turns it , down hole acts like a vertical auger which brings the fluid to the surface.
    Never ride a pump jack kids!!Ive seen videos in emergency training, of firefighters pulling mangled bodies of teenagers, that thought it would be cool to ride them, out from between the counter weights and pitman arms-- Not Pretty.
    I agree with Steve, after clearing the location, Plugging the wells and renovating the soil... perfect campsite.

    Here's a trick I learned from camping in freezing temp. Take a wool blanket, drape it over the tent on the outside. So it's between the rain fly and the top of the tent. Doing that makes it feel like you have a heater in your tent.
