I think the most gut-wrenching part of that MGS3 ending is the game forces the player to shoot The Boss. It's not a cutscene. You have to physically push the button on the controller to end her life and finish Snake's mission.

To add number 7, what’s arguably make John’s sacrifice even sadder, is that his son, Jack, eventually becomes an outlaw like his father(which John and Abigail feared) and goes after Edger after Abigail pass away. Jack is an example that the parent’s past can still live on with their children even after the parents death. And with John’s past, Jack has to bear his father’s mistakes and sins.
.....Wow, I didn’t expect to go that deep.

They're actually possibly resting even less.
John wouldn't have wanted Jack to just be another outlaw, he would want him to do something with his life.
He wouldn't want him to be another gunslinger who would either die young like himself or Arthur, or an old criminal with the law on his back.

    • @thegameknight8916
      @thegameknight8916 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Thing is, Jack can, by player choice, still follow his father's better example and be just a gunslinger and bounty hunter.
And Jack DOES eventually settle down and become a writer, because he has a book in GTAV. So John's wish, though late, does come true.

Noble 6 actually chose to stay on Reach, he could have gone onto the POA with the rest, but he didn’t...That’s just a testament to how much 6 cared about his friends that he’d die in the same place as them.
I also like how ironically everyone dies, Kat is the brains of the team, dies by headshot
Emile likes his knife, stabbed by energy sword
Jorge felt closest to reach, died off of the planet
Carter is the captain of the team, goes down with his ship
6 was a lone wolf, dies alone
And finally Jun kept his distance and survived... I miss the old bungie.

I think Bill from Left 4 Dead deserves a honorable mention.
Bill was a Badass War Veteran who gets what he always needed, an enemy to fight, and people to help. And he's got armies of zombies to fight and 3 people to help and support.
His loyalty to them was so strong, he will abandon others to guarantee his groups safety. In "The Sacrifice" Bill had to be left behind to save his friends. Without hesitation this guy marches out into an ocean of zombies and 3 Tanks (big, ape like zombies) to get the job done and die alone.
And while not canon he does come back to life in the crossover for Dead By Daylight, dedicated to risk his life to keep helping other survivors while risking a horrible death Every. Single. Day. And dying only means going through it again. A hell for most, somewhat happy ending for him.
Bill man... He quietly revels in Martyrdom.

I feel like there's one guy worth talking about when it comes to heroic sacrifices...
Zack Fair in "Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII".
Throughout the game, you really grow to like him with his optimism, surprisingly-good character development, and how he uses both despite the suffering and pain he had suffered in his time with SOLDIER.
He stops a mad scientist and ends the suffering of his favorite test-subject, stops Sephiroth's rampage from happening prematurely, saves the life of Cloud Strife, evades the Shinra Corporation, and even stops a world-ending crisis in the form of Genesis Rhapsados.
Yet in the end, he's cornered and only has time to hide Cloud away while he holds back the Shinra soldiers. And while he puts up a valiant fight and reduces their numbers significantly, he's ultimately gunned down with Aerith ghosting his thoughts.
When Cloud finally regains the strength to move, he finds Zack, bleeding to death. Zack bestows upon him his Buster Sword, a symbol of the honor and dreams he stood for, and tells Cloud to live for the both of them. With all that done, he closes his eyes and dies with a smile on his face.
What makes this such a meaningful sacrifice is not just how you grew to like Zack, but when his ultimate goal is considered. He wanted to be a hero. He became one, but both the characters in-game and the gamers in general don't fully know his actions and how they owe him their lives. Had he not done what he had, the world likely would have ended twice over at either Sephiroth's hands or Genesis's.
However, Zack would know the difference he made.
And that was all that mattered to him.
That's a heroic sacrifice if I ever heard one.

An old saying goes: "a hero isn't someone who's brave, it's someone who holds back his fears for a few more minutes"
My own father tells me this when we talk about heroes or soldiers...in my eyes, soldiers and heroes sacrifice themselves to keep us safe, even if they don't live to see it. We are still here because of them, and we honor them in our memories. Thank you, Joshua

And, because of their sacrifice, the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But, the hero never gets to see that ending. They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference. They'll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith. Ain't that a bitch?"

Even though he didn't make the list, seeing the clip of Grovyle's sacrifice really got to me. I absolutely adore Grovyle and began to view him as a "big brother" to my character in the PMD: Explorers games. Seeing him sacrifice himself to save not only the hero and partner, but also the entire timeline that believed him to be a villain for so long when he was actually trying to save them and while they were all praising the one who wanted to ensure the dark future was just heartbreaking to me. To top it all off, he was willing to make this self sacrifice since the very beginning of the game. He knew what would happen if he prevent the planet's paralysis and changed the future, yet he still went through with it. Even when he became separated from his partner, not knowing if they were okay or not, he still did his best to make sure the Pokemon of the present would be safe from the dark future. I'm really glad that in Explorers of Sky we get to see what became of him and the rest of the Pokemon in the future. Even when he's trapped in the future, knowing he will never see his partner again, he still keeps trying to ensure that the mission will succeed. In the end, Grovyle got to have a happy sacrifice as he began to disappear with Celebi in his arms, watching the sunrise. I was so relieved that Arceus revived them! I really wanted to see everyone live long and happy lives!

Not only does it have some of the best story lines I've seen in almost any game, but it's an absolute joy to play and gives you a chance to bond with Pokemon you would otherwise not think twice about! For example, I never really had an opinion on the Pokemon Nuzleaf. I didn't hate it nor love it. It was just sorta there for me. But after playing Super Mystery Dungeon, I absolutely love Nuzleaf! @@charleyrodijk1675 It is so hard not to cry during that scene or the stories that Mystery Dungeon games have to tell. Heck, I cried at the ending of Gates To Infinity when everyone left a message to the player even though I hadn't really bonded with any of them! PMD absolutely DESTROYS my emotional state with their words and storytelling! Even if I know it's coming and I've prepared myself to not have my spirits utterly crushed, I still ugly cry every time!

    • @charleyrodijk1675
      @charleyrodijk1675 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Midnight3Wonder I can totally see that. Even without the scene, hearing the song really brings me the tears. Aside of PMD, some of the Pokémon movies, specifically the older movies, made me cry. Lucario's death, Jirachi's goodbye and Latios' sacrifice made me cry, especially Jirachi, since not only did I liked him in the movie, but seeing Max break into tears is sad and the music didn't help either. Hearing Chiisaki Mono Lullaby makes me cry no matter the resistance regardless if I see the scene or not, it makes me cry. The goodbye themes from PMD Explorers of Sky have the same effect except this one makes me collapse to tears and cried through almost the entire ending. The flashbacks just killed me and it was so heartbreaking. This is why I prefer the spin-offs of Pokémon nowadays or older games in general. It's also one of the reasons why I love Riolu and Lucario so much. It's partially thanks to PMD why I love him so much and why he's my second favorite. That and his movie is amazing, epic and emotional in the ending. Jirachi is one of my favorite Mythical Pokémon, because he has a lot of nostalgia thanks to Jirachi's Wish Maker, one of the first movies I saw, the most nostalgic Pokémon movie and the movie that got me into Pokémon for good. Latios' death was sad and made me want to hug Latias, who not only lost her father, but now her brother too. Lucario's death brought me to tears, since he was such a good character and seeing him sacrifice himself like Sir Aaron did really made the moment good. The flashback and music actually killed it for me and seeing Lucario in tears of the last vision before Sir Aaron's death was just heartbreaking. PMD has the endings, Grovyle's sacrifice, the ending of Special Episode 5 and Armaldo's goodbye and the aftermath were also such moments. With such moments, stories and music, it's hard not to cry to this masterpiece of this game as well as the other games, which I liked too, even Gates to Infinity despite it's flaws.

I would have had Velvet Crowe somewhere in the top 3.
Though her own reasons for saving the world and dying were selfish ones, she set in motion a chain of events that needed to happen in order for the future heroes to finish the job, like the Boss in MGS3.
Even then her selfish reasons do take a back seat for 3 reasons, to save the world from being stripped of it's free will, to remind an old friend of the lessons he taught her but ultimately forgot himself and to set those said events in motion.
The whole time Velvet is unsung, she goes down in history as a monster that murdered a savior, a villain that nearly destroyed an entire town and its economy and a threat to humanity and all that is good, yet she still saved the world regardless of what she was branded.

I was just thinking about Mordin's character in the Mass Effect series and something occurred to me. While he has, as you put it, "no filter", Mordin is a character devoted to the betterment of the intergalactic society. He is revealed to have worked on the genophage and whenever it is bought up during the series, he insists that it was necessary. However as you get to know him better it becomes clear that, despite his willingness to do what is necessary, he would rather help then harm.
In Mass Effect 3, depending on the player's choices, his sacrifice and his actions leading up to it can show a desire to not only save the Krogans, but to create a society where they can peacefully coexist alongside the other races. His sacrifice gives the Krogans an unlikely hero, one who represents coming together for a greater cause. In that sense Mordin is the philosophical opposite of the Reapers. Co-operation over destruction.

One of my personal favorite video game character self-sacrifices is from Kid Icarus Uprising when a Chaos Kin pulled a fast one on Dark Pit (AKA Pittoo) and pulls him off a ledge causing him to fall to his death while it tries to consume him, and Pit dove after to save him despite the fact he's Pit's... not exactly his Evil Twin so much as Anti-hero Counterpart. To those of you unaware, Pit lacks the ability to fly on his own, he needs a god/goddess to give him the power of flight- which he can only wield for about 5 minutes at a time before it starts damaging his wings, and has like an hour cooldown or something. When he dives after Dark Pit he tells Viridi (whom he was temporarily allied with at the time) "I need to fly!" to which she says "You already used the power of flight, if I enable it again your wings will catch fire" to which Pit stresses the severity of the situation "the chaos kin is going to destroy Pittoo. I don't care if my wings catch fire!" "Viridi again tries in vain to convince him this is a bad idea "No way, just forget about it, I'm pulling you out..." "No, stop! If we don't help him right now, we won't have another chance! I'm begging you, Viridi, LET ME FLY, NOW!" Viridi begrudgingly complies but says the consequences that come from this action are on his own head. and Pit with the faustian boost swoops down to save his counterpart and fly back to safety- all the while his wings are burning horribly and upon completion his wings are just bloody burned stumps and the rest of him in critical condition. This act carries extra weight when you remember that earlier in the game, there was a wish-granting MacGuffin that they had to use for a specific wish, but just during conversation Palutena asked what Pit would hypothetically wish for, to which Pit answered "I want to be able to fly on my own"... and this is what happens because he can't. Before this whole ordeal where Palutena got brainwashed by the chaos kin, Pit promised her he'd return to their realm victorious, now here he is in her arms at death's door. This action prompts his dark edgy counterpart to try to save him by flying to the magic regeneration pool to dip Pit into it.

First of all, i trusted Morrigan so nobody had to die in my playtrough of DA:O, so to be fair i would switch #2 with Makoto Yuki, Minato Arisato, Door-kun or however you wanna call him. One of my favorite sacrifices that may very well could have been on this list is Kaede from Danganronpa V3. She tried to kill the mastermind at the very start of the killing game to be able to save everyone, but she unfortunately (supposedly) kills the wrong person when her target was the mastermind. Shes played off as the main character from the start of the game, and really does try to save everyone, but ends up failing... however, near the end of the first class trial, Kaede hands the reigns to her new friend Shuichi as the main protagonist, and uses the trial to test him if he can find out the truth, and really save everyone himself. In the end, it’s revealed Kaede is the killer, and is promptly executed... she really did try to save everyone from having to kill each other, but ultimately failed in doing so... it’s a great way to start off the game, and the start and finish of a great character.

    (Spoilers for Shadow of War)
Personally I would also include Talion in Shadow of War. While not a traditional laying down your life in the moment he does make a big one. (spoiler alert) After Celebrimbor betrays him and leaves him to die he realizes that if either Celebrimbor or Sauron wins Middle Earth will be conquered. So he voluntarily picks up Isildlur´s ring of power, giving up his chance to finally be with his family in death again and dooming himself to be a ringwraith. Just to try and buy Middle Earth enough time to prepare for the War of The One Ring. He holds back both the armies of Modor and the rings corruption for decades slowly losing his very personality and memories. While he does eventually fall and becomes a ringwraith he accomplished his goal and help saved Middle Earth for which he will get no credit since no one knows of his existence (and also because none of this is cannon to LOTR proper but whatever.)
That is for me one of the biggest sacrifices in gaming. Talion did not just lay down his life, he laid down his very mind and self just to buy Middle Earth a chance to be able to stop Sauron.

Character!Josh has pyrokinesis and healing abilities, and has teamed up with the Autarch and Chewie to take down a demonic Mothim, whereas Character!Rabbid has not shown any powers or fought against any particularly strong forces.
In-game!Josh was an optional boss in Forum Fantasy, well past the point where In-game!Rabbid was. Now, if he also had the abilities of M+R's Rabbid Luigi, that may be a closer battle, but it's clearly shown that the two are completely separate entities.

Possibly the greatest heroic sacrifice in my mind is that of Zack Fair. Giving up your life and future to save your friend, knowing that there’s a good chance he might not even remember you? I can’t think of anything stronger than that, including all of the examples here (which are no less worthy).
But there is one that gets to me every time I see it. In Samurai Warriors 4, one of the stories available is that of Mitsunari Ishida, the Toyotomi loyalist who opposed Ieyasu’s power grab after Hideyoshi died. Anyone who knows the history already knows how his story is going to play out (especially since KT kept to the historical blueprint a little more closely for SW4), but the way it’s portrayed is especially heartbreaking. Mitsunari is sent away from the battlefield once it becomes clear that the Western Army is losing at Sekigahara (thanks to Sakon punching him in the gut, throwing him over a horse, and slapping the horse to get it running), and he’s trying to get back to his castle. But Tokugawa soldiers are pursuing him, and have dragged an innocent woman along to confirm his identity. Mitsunari is exhausted, heart-sick over the loss of his friends and followers, and fully aware of what the defeat means; when the woman tries to avoid answering the soldiers’ demand and is about to be killed, he steps in and tells her that it’s all right. The soldiers focus on him and she flees. He just stands there, and lets them kill him so this nameless woman can live. In SW 4-II Sakon steps in and saves him at the last second, but in the original, he just closes his eyes and the story ends. Maybe it was to atone for his failure at Sekigahara. Maybe it was because he knew there was no escape. But he still gave his life to save that woman, and that scene never fails to make me cry.

I didn't see it in the spoiler list but I just recently beat Valkyria Chronicles 4 and I'd like to add my own personal pick for the topic of this list. Spoilers ahead!
Anyone who played the story already most likely knows who I'm referring to. That being Raz of course. I was pretty iffy on him at first given how he acted sometimes, but one thing he did great for sure was that he was always the first one to have his friends' back. Even if it meant going on a suicide mission to give his friends just enough time to break through a trap they fell into.
He always went on about being 'invincible'. Despite losing his life, I feel he really was invincible in a certain regard, that being his will being 'invincible'. Even as he lay bleeding out and listening to his friends cries over the radio, he still managed to never lose his composure: going so far as to crack one last joke and ask if the enemy reinforcements that showed up had a light before his own light faded out.
Despite having things he had every right to stay alive for, Raz still went through and gave his life for everyone else. He truly deserves to be called, in his own words, a Big Damn Hero.

@@thomasthepsychopathictrain4602 Actually you can bring him back with the cenotaph or however it's spelled. I forget the exact specifics, but you need to do a certain hard skirmish that unlocks in the post game which unlocks a secret cutscene and then watching that makes him available to be brought back.
This doesn't affect any changes in dialogue though, as it's technically non-canon. Just a means to get playable characters back if you want. TBH it's actually pretty sad to see him 'brought back' only to technically be still dead and never being able to interact with anyone ever again. That even though he's right there, it's only a gameplay feature and his fate is sealed no matter what.

Auron's was a more permadeath), and Reddas in FFXII (due to his sacrifice ending most of the Occuria's interference in the world, save for one)

@@crashb2007 I'd still agree with Nesouk, Class 0 fought a titanic mismatched battle against a foe supremely out of their league to save the day and protect the world, and in the end all died to win. All of them chose to go way, WAY beyond the limits of what their bodies could handle in order to save the day, and had to suffer through a painful long death from the aftereffects. Their bodies broke down slowly in what was clearly an agonisingly painful process as they realised that despite saving the day, despite saving the world....they were slowly dying for it. It wasn't a heroic sacrifice where they went out in a blaze of glory, it was a painful end where they knew they would never get to live in the world they just saved.
That shock as the younger members started breaking down crying as they realised their fate and their desire to live was heart-rending, and made their sacrifice all the more painful even as the older members eventually managed to rally everyone together for one last quiet childhood song as the scene ends.
Machina and Rem breaking into the classroom and seeing them all dead around the flagpole they made in their final moments as a symbol for their class......that was exceptionally poignant.

I know some won't understand but Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was very emotional to me, as from the beginning, you play as Nick Reyes, a Lieutenant in the UNSA and member of S.C.A.R. Team and part of the Retribution one of the UNSA's Strongest Space Carriers, during Fleet Week's Parade on Geneva, The SDF a Militarized Army colonized on Mars attacks Geneva, The Moon, and almost all of UNSA's Miltary and the aftermath leaves only two Carriers standing, and Retribution's Captain and XO are killed in the attack, promoting Reyes to Captain, leaving him in charge of the Retribution, as the game progresses you slowly take back parts of the Solar System while also cripping SDF, but soon you see characters you meet or have interacted with die, even to seeing The other Space Carrier getting destroyed without warning leaving The Retribution the last ship, soon supporting characters sacrifice themselves like Omar, Leader of the Retribution's Marines, who saves Captain Reyes and stays behind so they could escape an Asteroid getting too close to the Sun.
During the Campaign you can learn more about the characters and crew on the Retribution even to where there is even a conversation always before mission, Once the Final Plan occurs more characters die during the 2nd battle on Earth, but they're plan to steal the SDF's Supercarrier succeeds lightly cripling almost all of SDF's ship except for their Shipyard that's above Mars, The Supercarrier and the Retribution are both shot down and crash landed on Mars, Reyes remaining crew which almost all of them gather up and plan one final attack to board the Shipyard and destroy it, and as this final mission goes along every character you know sacrifices themselves, like Gator, Reyes' friend and Retribution's Navigator pushes Reyes out of Enemy gunfire and takes the hits killing him, Chief Engineer Audrey "Mac" who blows up the SDF's Robots Payloads but is pulled into one of the pods that had the explosives forcing the others to leave now, once the reached the Shipyard, Lieutenant Salter, Reyes' Best Friend comandeer an SDF ship with only a few others, Reyes unlocks its weapons systems and orders them to fire on the Shipyard, which Reyes was still onboard of, the Shipyard is destroyed and Reyes survives until the debris shatters his helmet killing him.
The game shows that 743 of Retribution's Crew sacrificed themselves on the battle on Mars and there are only 4 survivors, one being Lieutenant Salter.
The game turned really emotional during the second half but gave their lives to end the war...Peace to the Fallen like they say.
So one of the best sacrifices to me is Captain Reyes and All of Retribution's Crew.
Hell during the credits you can listen to their Death Letters, sent to their families which made it more sad to where I kinda teared up.
Say anything you want about Today's CoD games but Infinite Warfare had a really powerful campaign that I haven't been impressed with since Black Ops 2.

    • @HunterMKnight
      @HunterMKnight 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Quick Notes: Throughout the game Reyes refused to let his crew sacrifice themselves when needed, which makes it feel a bit realistic to where he does not want casualties even if their sacrifices might help push to the end of the war, Audrey "Mac" even confronted him about it where sacrifices may happen, the game really showed the casualties of war and it felt...real.
And to put more sadness on this one of the deaths involves you holding both triggers to put pressure on the bleed and the controller vibrates to the dying character's heartbeat and then he asks, "Is that rain, Sir?" The controller stops vibrating and the faint heartbeat audio in the game stops, and he dies...

I would suggest Chara, as they literally put themself through a very painful death just to give their family and friends freedom, but even Chara Defenders like myself can't ignore the fact that they also had a rather blindling hatred toward humanity and wanted to take more human lives in order to achieve their goals, and because of Asriel chickening out, that sacrifice was pretty much put to waste. Unless, of course, you go the Pacifist route, of course. Also, there's the possibility that Asgore may have been planning on giving his soul to them if they had allowed themself to grow up rather than jumping the gun by killing themself at such a young age.
Still a pretty ballsy move for a small child. They even knew what kind of pain they'd be putting themself through!

I would say Luther's Sacrifice in Detroit: Become Human should have been on this list. You go through Kara's story wanting to make a family for Alice and then you find Luther an android who also wants to make a family. You've saved him multiple times in Kara's story and then at the end you know someone has to sacrifice themselves in order to make the border security forget to do the temperature check. So you choose Luther. Luther then talks to Alice about how she will have to live her life without him. Luther then pretends to hold Alice the girl who he protect this entire time at gunpoint to try and get across the border. You even see him get shot. Not in the top 5, but definitely self sacrifice.

Sean McFadden those are good points, but I don’t think that they would cut it, especially sans.
I mean Undyne totally would, cause that is exactly what she was doing. But Everybody says that sans would throw his life down for his brother and monsters, but you only fight him if you kill literally everyone possible. You can kill nobody but papyrus, still won’t fight him. He literally only fights you to stop Chara from corrupting the game.
Plus... they can come back thanks to the whole Determination thing. I mean sure it’s a save point feature, but they remember bits of the past, so it’s arguably too iffy to do so.

She jumped in front of a attack meant for Monster Kid 2. She does everything she can to stop you
However the reason I believe she didn't make the list is because her sacrifice in the end amounts to nothing if you complete the genocide run.
