Land Cruiser Steering rack bushes

  • Steering rack play is pretty common for these old Toyotas, but sometimes it's just some worn bushes. I bought a full bushing kit from ‪@NolathaneSuspension‬ via ‪@RoughTrax4x4‬ and got to work on the manual labour. Here's what I learned when removing these bushes without needing an air hammer or a press.

I did a new steering rack together with SuperPro polyurethane rack bushings last September on my 2000 LX470. The old rubber bushings were "perished" as I think you guys like to say over there. It was so bad, the entire rack was flopping left to right every time I turned the wheel and that caused the steering wheel to have about a 30 degree "dead spot" in the middle where it did absolutely nothing until the rack pushed up against the mounting bolts themselves and then started to turn the wheels. Now with the new rack and poly bushings, it's so sharp, I actually have to pay attention to my steering inputs above maybe 80 mph because it will respond to very subtle force on the wheel.

Well it sounds like you win the prize for most vague steering ever experienced in a Toyota. Are you running larger tires or are you still on factory size?

@@landcruiserscotland Original equipment size (275/70R16) in the summer, tiny bit smaller (265/70R16) in the winter because that's the largest 16" size Nokian offers for the Hakkapeliitta R3 or now the R5.

    Nice job.
Replace inner (and outer) tierods with original Toyota parts, Aisin or Sankei 555.
I've got good experience with those, bad with most others.
    Same goes for balljoints.
On our HDJ100 rally car we also use a bit of blue loctite on the inners and also the lock ring after having problems with the inners coming lose.
On the rallycar the bushes wear very fast so we made more bushing mounts. But outside of racing it isnt neccesairy.

I put a pair of Toyota replacements on to sort the inner rod play. Well worth paying a bit extra for the Toyota oem bits.

Doing this now. Does it squeek with the new bushes? The way the instructions read, the lubricant should only be on the inside of the bush, now i'm unsure what to do.

Yes polyurethane will squeak when rubbed together. Cake it with grease to minimise that 👍

Nice. So you have body lift and AHC lift kit? How does it ride? I have only AHC lift kit from Dave.

I have a body lift which is one inch spacers on the 10 body Mount positions and I have ahc sensor lift by tricking the suspension to think it's running too low and then it runs higher pressures. I have not yet fitted the AHC shock spacer kit from Japan 4x4

Did you crank up the torsion bars and fit a spacer in the rear to get the ahc pressures within spec?

@@DjYvesNL in my LC 100 I had to max out torsion bars for ok pressure. Rear I have King springs KTRS-79 and 30 mm spacers for ok pressure.

All of the above. I removed the torsion bars to reindex them, and I have uprated springs and a coil spacer on the rear because I'm towing a lot.

Lot of rust and cracks on frame

Surface rust yes, but fortunately no cracks or structural.
