Great video Matt. Physics stepping in here. That pressure cone you see on the entry, is due to how force is distributed. When the bullet hits, it compresses all the material under it, however, that force also spreads out. Shear force on glass (sideways) causes it to fracture radially away, while pressure downward does not. So, you get a cone of compression underneath the impact, and blown out glass around it. This is a really general explanation.

Huh, believe it or not that was my guess, compression at the point of impact and the energy has to go somewhere. And the fracturing on the opposite side is due to the compression at the point of impact creating a chain reaction in a straight line through the material causing stress on the opposite pole causing fracturing. There is more to it than that, but that's basically what's happening.

    Really cool video.
    Fun facts:
    - Obsidian /is/ glass. So yeah, you're right that it's semi-transparent.
    - The backside effects are from shockwave lensing, and our planet does the same thing for large meteor impacts. Also how shaped charges work.
    - No cracking in the middle behind where the bullet hit, because that bit has nowhere to go. Shockwave passes straight through it.
    - Glass means it doesn't have internal crystal structure like most rocks - that's why the shockwave can go straight through.
    - That obsidian blade is about a thousand times sharper than a steel scalpel or razor.
    - Also three times sharper than even a diamond scalpel blade.
    - Dangerous sharp. I once sliced my thumb open quite badly with a quarter-inch-long spike of normal glass - it was stuck in the sole of my sandal, and my hand slipped a bit while I was trying to pull it out. Lot of blood, had to go to the doctor. Do not recommend. I was honestly really relieved when you put gloves on.
    - Largest diamond in the world is just under 12 inches wide, so yeah that actually does exist. Give the researchers half a million dollars and they'll probably make another one for you, though that might be complicated since they made the first one in what's currently a warzone (Kyiv).
    - I could have predicted most of the results in this video, but I have no idea what a 12" diamond ball would do. Could explode, could shatter, could just completely ignore whatever you hit it with. And hell yeah I'd love to see you try it.

Just to explain the weird shearing... When a bullet hits the sphere dead-on, it's compressing the sphere. The sphere has enough strength to resist the compression, rejecting the force of the bullet. That's why the bullet doesn't really penetrate. And because that force has been stopped from going forwards, it has to go somewhere else, so it crashes outwards and sideways, shearing off the pieces.

Bad analogy but hope that clears it up a bit. Center dense snow withhold the shockwave sides are fragile and that’s why often time you get those razor sharp sheers

About the weird crack in the back. I recently saw a video on I-beam testing, when you apply a load, it actually rotates inside, pull neutral & press, so the bullet is like a load on a brick (I-beam), the center is compressed the sides are fine & the back is pulled away. Additionally, since it's a kinetic hit, it can act as a marble swing set, where a ball hits a set of balls & the end ball only moves (compression to decompression like a water wave splash). This is how I currently understand it from random videos off the internet.

A .357 magnum is slightly larger than a 9mm. A 9mm is basically a .354 caliber. Also, the Native Americans used obsidian for arrowheads because it can get razor sharp. Also, the reason that the back end gets damaged is because of energy transfer. If you have seen a Newton’s cradle, it is basically the same concept. The energy passes through the obsidian and to the back side. The reason the bullet is intact in the center of the impact is because the obsidian absorbs most of the energy, taking it away from the bullet, leaving it intact. It is the same reason meteors don’t get completely destroyed on impact.

The point of pressure becomes the most dense point when the bullet hits so is stays together and the sides break off. As for the back the force from the bullet pushes through and makes a crack on the back of the ball. Hope that helps with your questions😁👍

Its like watching the slow motion of a gold ball being struck. The equator expands quite a bit more in relation to the point where it is struck. The glass ball reacts in a similar way, the point of impact doesnt stretch as much as the equator wants to, so the waves cause more cracks and fissures where as the point of impact less damaged relatively, since the point of impact has less of the force felt closer to the equators. In short when shot the glass ball wants to react like a golf ball, there is pressure trying to stretch at the equator while the point of impact has been less affected by stretch.

I can break in rounded patterns but they will be in the opposite direction as the glass. Both types of glass are formed through heat. As far as the sharpness. Western Native Americans. Obsidian is used by some surgeons for scalpel blades, as well-crafted obsidian blades have a cutting edge many times sharper than high-quality steel surgical scalpels, the cutting edge of the blade being only about 3 nanometers thick.

Obsidian is a crystalline material like glass and steal. When you hit it with a round the energy is transferred from the round, through the ball and back to the round/smallest pieces of mass. Same phenomenon as "Ruperts drop" occurs.
Since Obsidian is very hard and brittle, the round compresses the front without breaking the crystalline structure. Then the shockwave cracks the now weakened points of the crystalline structures that have micro cracks(the sides) because there is a difference in density(same reason the area the bullet hits is dust, the compression causes an extreme number of fractures). Then that shockwave travels back to the round and any small(relatively speaking) pieces. The same thing happens to the back. The energy transphers through the ball to the back, finds the weakest point and cracks it. From there the energy MUST travel to the smallest objects. Since the area's in the back that are cracked from the original shockwave they are much smaller(have less mass) then the big ball so the energy shatters them.

  • @greg5145
    @greg5145 2 ปีที่แล้ว

If anyone is curious why it cracks so weird.
it’s likely tension from its cooling process.
Also the obvious vibration causing a ripple effect at different frequencies all the way around.
Glass is a really weird substance and one of the easiest to see these processes from.

After the shot gun shot, when y'all are doing the close up, it's noticable that it did fracture the back. You can see the fracture lines, they are the circular foggy areas inside.
That lump where it's struck is normal btw, its to do with compression and shock waves. Shock waves are the reason for the fracturing in the back and sides. Its also part why the brakes are wavey not straight lines. It is "physics magic" lol.
