How about making games more accessible? Most people watch via streams, as it's impossible to watch all your games via one platform (gamepass, cable, etc). I'm surprised this wasn't addressed. I think this is the biggest issue
What Jonny & you guys ignore is that a big part of the problem is modern audiences. You expect these guys to sit near 2 hours with force commercial brakes. Jonny rules & removing anti defense rules appeal to more traditional nba heads & those already care in the 1st place. Also the nba is getting paid big time, revenues have only increased so far.
@@Refreshment01yes they would The fast paced non defense is clearly not working It's much more worthy and more fun to watch guys competing and having great defense even if it is meant to be a longer game.
@@jeromecruz3237 You are not refuting my point, you are just stating your preference. Modern audience is not looking for that. Just like the baseball fanatic that loves a pitching duel, great for him but poison when its about attracting new fans. Basketball is being consumed heavily to some extent but as highlight reels. You wont get these guys to seat for 2.2 hours watching 2 teams in physical grind. Ask a casual boxing fan if he enjoys clinching matches.
The NBA Cup should culminate and crown a champion during All Star Weekend and it should give that team automatic home court advantage during the playoffs if they make it in.
Bring back/enforce old school rules. Only allow dribbling on the side of the ball, call carrying if they go under. 2 step travels, no “gather”/“zero” steps, which are basically just an excuse to let refs never call a travel. Stop letting offensive players initiate contact, call them offensive fouls like they’re supposed to be called. Remove defensive 3 seconds in the key. Stop rewarding flopping. Nba literally put in rules to stop foul baiting and flopping years ago and just decide not to enforce them, so actually do it so it stops. Just like that the rules are basically what they used to be and are what people actually want to see. Teams will still shoot a lot of 3’s no doubt, but all those being enforced makes it harder for offensive players to create space, making defense easier and the game more aesthetic. Players would have to shoot more mid ranges and post up because defenders can run them off the 3pt line. When they do that now, the ball handler can still create space by pushing off, carrying and traveling. I don’t understand why people enjoy seeing professional players be allowed to play offense like 5 year olds who are just learning the game. The first things you are taught when you’re a kid is how to dribble without carrying, that you can only take 2 steps before it’s a travel, and that if you push off or run into a defender it’s an offensive foul. These are the first things you’re taught as a kindergartner and yet the nba players don’t abide by these rules. The reason sets and plays exist in basketball is because players had to find a way to create space to get a shot off. If they were allowed to just carry, travel and run over a defender any time they wanted, there’d be no need for plays to get them open.
Fix “blackout” bs on local games, allow hand checking, change paint to 5 seconds, refs need to be way more lenient on good defenders. Your partial refund idea is amazing.
I agree with removing bs technicals. They should also suspend players who throw punches or attack fans for around 20-30 games and require they take a pay cut based on the percentage of games missed during the suspension.
I agree with you 100% about cutting the first-round playoffs to the best of five games. All of the other series and the Finals can remain best of seven.
@@3243_Way too many teams make the playoffs. Cut the number of teams making the playoffs to 4 in each conference, and have the season totally over with by May 1. Playing a winter sport into mid to late June is ridiculous.
Commissioner Jonny & Dynamo collab? Don't change 3pt line, allow slightly physical defense like decades past, scrap freedom of movement, percentages would drop. Love the other changes.
Yes. But not 'slightly'. Moving the physicality-level _over_ halfway towards 'Jordan Rules' could actually be a good thing that keeps players healthier while improving gameplay. Players wont just sprint to a max-vert dunk on every break or baseline drive if they know a body&hands can check/meet them along the way. This also incentive-izes development of more creative midrange and post scoring, naturally. _THREE BIRDS, ONE STONE_
Asking Refs to enforce flop fouls more often will only piss people off because they'll inevitably call non flops, flops and they'll be more "Refs ruining the game" moments. That happens enough. We need less reasons for the refs to interfere, not more. They should encourage refs to no call flops or to remove the call when they recognize it was a flop while reading the replay. That makes flopping irrelevant without giving refs more excuses to wanna be the star of the game. We get enough of that already. Let the players play
I very rarely leave comments on any internet platform. Jonny, You and Sean Davis( basketball time machine) are the best NBA youtubers. There are others that do very well but if it boil down to a simplified timeline of current and history that would bethe way to go. From just reading the title load management, traveling, and flops were my first targets. This video is my top 3 favs you've put together. Growing up I watches the NBA religiously starting from "I'M BACK" to "THE DECISION". After that I paid attention but lost the unconditional love as a fan take sure I still tried to watch 2 to 5 games every week. Everything you pointed out gave me the excitement of the 90's again with Rage Against the Machine BOOMING for that unconditional spark to be set free again. In you're wondering I cheer for Golden State. Not for Curry or Draymond or even the love I hold for Klay putting the Mavs as my number 2. I cheer for the Warriors because I am a 90s Bulls fan till I die( yes, even though it's INSANE I'll try to defend Pippens recent comments) Steve Kerr is my guy now and I will follow him like a Lebron fan.
I’m so happy you bring up the comeback on hand checking and defensive 3 second rule. I was waiting the whole video for you to say it! I would also say in the experimental rules of the NBA Cup Tournament, would be this fully eliminate zone defense AND up the foul limit to 8 fouls instead of 6. MAKE NBA DEFENSE GREAT AGAIN 😎
@ restore the balance of offense and defense. Zone defense make players lazy and hold them accountable to their offense assignments. Also it naturally tires the players offensively since they have to put real effort on both sides of the floor. Combine that with hand checking and no defense 3 second rule, and you will have a great quality NBA. Don’t worry the GOAT MJ this kind of basketball and dominated.
@@Scotty.813So basically make them play one on one and dumb down the game? Youre lazy for zoning up 2 shooters and recovering to the ball while your teammates rotate behind you? You're lazily for executing a defensive scheme that forces the best offensive player to have to make different decisions whole you look out of backdoor cuts, open shooters, etc? Come on
@ you are wrong buddy. That’s not dumbing down the game. Zone definition was re implemented in the early 2000’s before that. Only man to man defense was allowed in the 80’s and 90’s. NBA team PPG averages were at 109 in the 80’s and 101 in the 90’s. As soon as zone defense was implemented it’s immediately dropped to 96 PPG. The lowest decade ever of leagues PPG average. Mind you the 90s had the highest overage league tv rating followed by the 2000’s. But yet they had NO ZONE defense and hand checking. Do your research first.
@Scotty.813 Your comment doesn't argue against my statement outside of saying "no you're wrong." The ratings being higher in the 90's makes sense since one of the most popular and influential basketball players ever played then. The 2000s having zone defense reinstated and still being behind the 90's in ratings means that zone defense wasn't the issue And if the ppg dropped when zone defense was reinstated then wouldn't that say defense was being played? The zone also isn't a great coverage right now due to good teams are at shooting the ball
I agree on everything excepted for making yhe 3p shot distance. Just get rid of defensive 3second violation and allow more physical in your face defense on the perimeter with handchecking, and overall allow a more physical game. The 3p shot efficiency will decrease and so the volume
Im fairly certain nothing would change. Teams would still run PnR and have offball sets that open up 3pt shooters. Handchecking also doesnt make everyone a good defender suddenly
@@Spawnamvs also it will not matter if everyone just shoots it at 24 feet because they could pass it to someone else in 24 feet and shoot it, unless handchecking means Draymond doing Draymond things
Jonny for Commissioner! Loved all of the ideas except bring back 80's and 90's defense for good, not just for the in-season tournament or playoffs. Allow hand checking and rim protectors to camp out and make those layups and dunks truly earned.
Let's say the players today are MORE skilled(more sauce) in dribbling due to rules allowed and more SHOOTER due to players today heavily focusing on training their 3s, then it's more reason to *BRING BACK the HANDCHECK.* Also, NBA shouldn't reward fouls/FTs on those unnatural shooting motion by sweeping their arms on the defender's arms, and those jumping into the defender on the air like how DWade does. This way, there is MORE for the defense in this heavily offensive minded brand of NBA, and we could see "HOW really SKILLED" these current players are. Just my 2 cents.
THANK YOU FOR CALLING OUT THE GATHER STEP BS. I would personaly get rid of it completely, but limiting it is okay too. People get away with obvious travels by abusing the rule
@tzovlask Also I would disallow the double stepbacks, they be taking 4 steps and not get called for it. Just do a normal stepback and that's it, dont allow any extras
I’m sure it’s been said, but I think lengthening the 3 point line would just make corner 3s the only shot, it would maybe lessen 3 pointers for a bit, but eventually every other play would be a corner 3 attempt. Great video! I have been saying the all star game should determine home field advantage in the finals for years now, so nice to hear someone else with the same idea!
I agree with almost everything in this video. The only thing I would change is the 3 second rule. Instead of a three second rule, I would change it to a 6 second rule. Great video
Best NBA page on TH-cam. Heres my thoughts and rebuttals. 1. Yes, move the distance for 3s back, but the corners also. This means widening the court. The NBA has kept with a 50 foot width for 80 years! These guys are way faster and longer since 1945. If that means the first row or two of seats are gone so be it. 56 foot court width. 2. The NBA cup needs to be 8 games not 4. Home and away vs each in your pool. One star misses one game and you're basically eliminated from the cup playoff. 3. Dont care for the all star winner getting home court, baseball tried and it failed. Incentivise the defensive player with the most blocks, steals and rebounds as the all star game MVP and 500 grand as the defensive MVP of that game. 4. Hand checking yes, but defensive 3 seconds going away would just mean more threes as no one would challenge the paint. 5. Yes on 70 games to get NBA awards. 6. Yes on enforcing traveling. 7. Bring back the Christmas uniforms with festive font on xmas games. 8. The NBA league pass situation needs fixed, gotta be able to see your home team on league pass. 9. Trash talk is fine as long as they aren't face to face a foot apart. Seeing emotion in baseball now with a big homer or strikeout has jazzed up baseball.
Getting rid of defensive 3 seconds would make 3s go down, you would actually be able to play real help side defense. In today’s game once the on ball defender gets beat someone has to come way off their man leading to a wide open 3. With true help side defense they might get the shot off but it’s contested
4:30 Baseball used to do this… The League (ie conference) who won the All-Star game held home field advantage in the World Series. They did this for different reasons but… Regardless, it's not a terrible idea
Limiting player's trade would make trades much rarer, which would have a greater impact on the league's journeymen and two-way guys rather than the league's superstars...
Well, historically the way to prevent that was to limit free-agency. i.e. shift power to team owners and GMs and away from agents. We're not going backwards, of course - but at the same time the influence of Klutch is clearly a negative for everyone but them and whoever they pay off. A better balance needs to be found.
Great video, Jonny. Worthy of an ongoing series, really. - Fine or suspend a ref for not calling flops and for holding up games with 3+ minute reviews. I know that's unlikely lol, but something's gotta give. - I like the All-Star stakes idea, but it should be worth 3-5 "wins" for seeding, and not be automatic regardless of record of each finals team. - I like increasing the 3pt line distance, but a 26'-22' variable is wonky (d*ck jokes incoming...). I know it wont happen but widening the court seems the only genuine fix for this. We can't seriously have a 4 foot difference; not all game long. So (and this isn't perfect, either. Without widening the court, nothing is) - Run the 3 out of bounds UNTIL Q4 and OT, then enable the 22' corner3. This will make the game more exciting in crunch time and not destroy everyone's 3pt% for the entire game, and keep many 3&D players valuable. PEACE and happy new year
Great ideas, Jonny! I particularly like the technical free throws for flopping, an extension to the 3 PT line, and not penalizing non-physical altercations. I'm tired of the flopping and it makes the game annoying. While I still have fun watching the game today, I think too many 3s are taken, so I like how extending the 3 point line will reduce the number of 3s. Like you, I'm okay if the players taunt each other/bicker (I get annoyed at how the NFL penalizes taunting too) as long as they're not getting violent with each other. Trash talk is a part of the game. The ideas you have for limiting load management are good too. I think 70 is a good number and a good balance. I am not opposed to shortening the season, but I also support increasing the minimums to get an award and providing refunds too. 70 is reasonable and I know I'd be disappointed if I came to a game to see a star play, only to find out at game time that they're not playing. While I personally would've just implemented hand checking and getting rid of defensive 3 second prohibitions, I do like your idea for using the NBA Cup to test them. It'd be a nice pilot project. Great ideas again. Happy New Year, Jonny!
Interesting choices by Jonny. Here is what I would do: 1) make the 3 pt line at 22 feet all around the basket. This will make the offensive space smaller, allowing for more defense. Obviously, players that can shoot from the logo will continue doing so, but players who are currently bad at 3 pt shooting but shoot a lot of 3 pt shots will try to get closer to the basket, which means tighter offenses and defenses. The problem is not too many 3s, the problem is too many unsuccessful 3s and the spreading of the floor. If 3 pt shooters try to get closer to the basket, it will be easier to defend the 3, which means some players will have to revert to more 2s. 2) no defensive 3 second violation; come on, this was ridiculus. Defense must be allowed to defend their basket. 3) enable hand checking; no need to experiment with it, we need hand checking NOW. 4) call carries and travels as they should, as well as any other violation. No more gather steps. No more technicals for trash talking, except for the very heavy cases (racism etc). No more flopping. No more leaning into the defender. 5) no NBA cup and shit like that. Otherwise fans will watch the cup games, and then interest will drop. 6) NBA all star game: NBA players vs G-leaguers. The NBA players will have to play hard to get to the win, otherwise they will be ridiculed to loosing from an inferior league. No finals home court advantage, this will hurt the league by teams not caring to have the most wins all over the NBA, just only in their conference. 7) when a player load manages in the regular season, they shall lose 1/82 of their yearly salary, which will go to a charity of their choice. Same for playoffs. I bet you that no player will load manage... EDIT: Come to think of it, I will also abandon offensive 3 second violation too. Camping under the basket would be the antidote for the too many threes.
3 sec rule. Would that effectively mean teams can play zone? That would be interesting for sure. 1. Reduce the season to 72 games. 2. Make the first round best of 5 again (2-2-1) 3. Make the playoff game back to back with a travel day to switch cities. 4. Later rounds (2-2-1-1-1) 11 days max for a series that goes to 7 games. I'd like to move the season some as well but you begin to have conflicts with the Super Bowl and March Madness.
Great video. The one main disagreement I have with is the corner 3 staying around. I honestly think you could keep the current arch the same distance but remove the corner 3 by having the arc extend all the way to the sidelines instead of squaring it off. The main reason I think the corner 3 needs to go is because it is the most valuable shot on the floor and this year we're starting to see teams take more of them. The numbers are telling us this but I think there is another fundamental reason the corner 3 is the most valuable shot in the game. Since it is so valuable it means defenses have to guard it, which causes them to have to stretch out to the corners which means they can't help as much on drives or iso plays on top. This creates so much more space for players to work with. If you get rid of the corner 3 and all of a sudden it becomes a corner 2 teams won't have to guard it as much and therefore defenders can play off the corners more giving more rotational help in the middle which should make other 3 pt shots harder to make as there will be more help. It would mean drives to the basket won't be as easy also. I think this could bring back the mid range game.
I wholeheartedly AGREE with EVERYTHING (well almost everything, don't care much about the Cup, but I understand why you wonna keep it). I would however, implement the hand checking right away, wouldn't even test it. Furthermore, perhaps instead of lengthening the 3 point line, I would add a 4pt line. Altough, I do understand why you would just increase the length, instead of a 4 pt line. I mean, you essentially described 90s basketball for the most part :).
If you push the 3 point back to 26 feet, corner 3’s will account for way more than 10%. I say experiment. Get rid of the corner 3. Or keep the corner 3, but widen the court and push the line back.
*before watching I thought I'll share my list of changes* 1) Balance the interpretation of the rules so that block/charge & reach/ shooting foul get called roughly even over the whole league. 2) Increase the off-season duration 3) Increase limitations of salary cap to prevent teams from buying championships 4) Reexamine the hand-checking rule to reduce the effect of 5 out spacing. (Slightly more contact allows slightly less defensive brakedowns, which limits open three opportunities). Looking forward to your changes!
I would bring back: 1. Hand checking 2. Increase the dunk to 3 points. - I would then define the dunk as where the any part of the wrist/arm or hand/fingers hits the rim when throwing it down. 3. The team that wins the Cup as an automatic playoff birth along with a major bonus payout for all players that win the cup.
For me, the thing most obviously missing from the NBA is divisional rivalries. We don’t see anything in basketball today that resembles Packers/Bears or Ravens/Steelers or Eagles/Cowboys. So I would change the playoff rules to reimplement divisions. The 1-3 seeds in each conference go to the respective division winners in those conferences, the 4-6 seeds go the division runner ups, and the 7-8 seeds go to the two teams with the best records that aren’t included yet.
I just typed the same thing! Divisions need to matter because they do in the MLB, NFL, and NHL. Though I would have the top 4 seeds go to the 3 division winners, and highest non division winner. 5-8 goes based on record. Thats just me.
Also - End the 1st round series as soon as it gets to a) 3-0, or b) either team wins 3 games in a row. Too many early-round grinds for no good reason. I know the league is desperate for ad ca$h, but when fans discredit a team's chip due to opponents injuries every other year, it hurts (no pun intended) viability and marketing anyways. _Competitively, there is no point in holding a 4th game after one team beats the other 3x in a row._ None whatsoever.
@@rogelioatempa1115 I mean, the equivalent of this happens in the NFL all the time. We see 9-8 teams make the playoffs and 10-7 teams miss it. I’m willing to sacrifice complete competitive fairness to bring more viewers to the league.
Stretch 3pt line would drop % for a limited amount of time and would cause the undesired effect of even more wide open lanes to the basket ina 5 out offense. The defense would need to spend more energy on close outs, while FIBA rules are good enough to balance the game closer to the basket. If you want to drop %3s then the best way is to reduce diameter size of the rim by few inches, the longest shots would be more affected then close ones
Widening the 3 point line would just make it so that there's way more space, perimeter defence would crumble that much faster, leading to more open 3s...
Thanks for the video Jonny! Love the ideas here. Personally, there are fundamental problems with the NBA that require a reset. I heard this idea from another TH-cam the other day. It’s highly unpopular but I think it’s necessary. To your point, essentially bring back most/all of the 90’s rules (although you suggested experimenting them in the NBA Cup for viewers). Also, I would take away the 3 point line. This will come off as punishment, but it’s needed. Will it hurt the league? Yes but I believe by taking away the 3 pt line, players will be forced to be fundamental and creative in getting their points. Plus, more crashing the boards since half the team won’t be standing at the perimeter. Just my thoughts.
Steps are limited to 2 after the last Dribble returns to the hand. Load management equals a technical foul at start of each quarter for amount of players doing it and have a set amount of techs totals for suspension and heavy fines. The tech amount applies to flopping with post game reviews of game at leagues office deciding if player baited refs into calling flopping which results in additional techs to start each quarter of next game with a tech carrying over from previous game with 2 tech ejection still in place. Refs stop blowing whistle just because a player falls down and refs can decide on hand signals from other refs on court in case foul needs calling . All star games decide homecourt advantage, just like MLB did. Three pointers are already broken and instead of moving line back, teams can only get credit for certain amount of 3 pointers per half.
If 3 point line were to get away from the basket, then defensive 3 second rule has to be removed to counter that. A wider 3 point line will change the way defenses organise, path to layups would be even more open than it already is.
I agree with pretty much all of this. Load management is def the toughest issue to fix. With the NBA cup that’d be sick if it was like a league wide NCAA style tournament, single elimination. Probably not realistic, but would be sick
Good video. I agree with you about the technical fouls. I would no longer eject players for just pushing and shoving, but just call a technical on them; only if they actually throw at least one punch should they get an automatic ejection, suspension, and fine. Here are a few other changes I would make: 1. Go back to each team having only two or at most three uniforms. I would require each team to have one home uniform (white, or gold or silver for the teams like the Lakers who have gold or silver [like the Spurs] as part of their team colors) and one road uniform (colored). And the home team would be required to wear their home uniforms at home only, with the visiting team required to wear their road uniforms. Each team would be allowed to have either a home alternate or one road alternate, but not both. Alternates must also be in their respective teams' colors and could only be worn up to twice during the preseason and up to ten times during the regular season; no more alternates during the postseason. This is to have a more consistent visual look for the league as a whole, as well as making it a lot easier to tell which teams are playing in a game and which team is the home or visiting team. 2. I would eliminate the play-in tournament, as the league has always already had a great way for teams to qualify for the postseason. It's called the regular season. 3. I would move the NBA Cup to the postseason, during the first round of the playoffs. It would involve all of the teams that did not qualify for the playoffs. They would be seeded within each conference from best to worst in terms of regular season record and would face each other in single-game elimination, with the Western Conference winner playing the Eastern Conference winner in one game. The winner of that game gets the Cup plus perhaps an additional draft pick or maybe a million dollars extra in cap space for signing players. 3. I agree with you about bringing back handchecking and no longer allowing traveling, as well as getting rid of the defensive three-second rule in order to bring back a little defense. 4. In order to help foster division rivalries (and have a little less long distance travel), I would have teams play each of the other teams in their division eight times apiece (four home, four road), plus two home games and two road games with each of the other teams in their conference. Yes, this does mean fewer interconference games in an 82-game season; each division would only play one division in the other conference on a rotating basis; for example, the Atlantic Division (Eastern Conference) would only play two games (one home and one road) against each of the Pacific Division teams one year, then against the Northwest Division the next season, the Southwest Division the season after that, then back to the Pacific Division. This would definitely create interest in the All-Star Game and in the NBA Finals as well as the final NBA Cup Game. 5. I would also shorten the first round of the playoffs to best-of-five. All the other playoff series and the Finals would remain best-of-seven. 6. The All-Star Game should definitely be East vs West again. However, I would only use the All-Star Game to determine homecourt advantage for the Finals as a tiebreaker if both teams in the Finals had the same regular season record, plus the same playoff won-lost record, and the same head-to-head regular season record against each other.
Happy new year Johnny arnett, love the videos, I agree with the defensive 3 second rule , and the 3 pointers extended change, suggestion : for the NBA all Stars , apart from homecourt advantage in the finals, I would give out a ticket , hotel room , etc. to be in the NBA finals
I’d change the shot clock reset after an offensive rebound back to 24 seconds. It would incentivize teams to run plays and have big men down in the paint more often
Negative on financial incentives based on games played-you shouldn't get more compensation for doing what you're supposed to do. Also it would basically punish players for getting injured. Bring back 90s era jerseys with logos on them. They inspire a sense of team and city spirit that "Phila" and "Cavs" don't extended 3 pt line + bring back hand checking and remove defensive 3 secs + reduction of total games to around 60 so no back to backs and less 2 games in 3 nights
If you are keeping the corner 3s, then, have a 3-second violation in the corner area; If a ref decides to eject a player, it must be agreed by the other 2 refs and Steve Javie
Bring back hand checking and get rid of 3 second violations in the paint..and raise the salary of the referees by about 5x more but make them accountable for their own mistakes by getting suspended for months or a full season..fine flopping by 25% of a player's salary if proven., Get rid of load management by getting rid of guaranteed contracts..
Love the idea of having the all-star game determine the home court advantage!!!! It's not like you're adding a game. Also, the format has changed before. Also, also, if a conference is stronger, they should likely have home court anyways
1. Bring back hand checking. 2. No gather step. 3. Widen the court and move out the entire three point line by three feet. 4. Load management equals refunds like you said, but hit the player's salary who is sitting. 5. Drop the NBA cup. 6. Make the season 60 games.
Interesting ideas a few things that I would do on top of that is. I would change the in season tournament to a consolation playoff bracket that begins after All-Star weekend. There you have all teams that do not make the playoffs play for draft picks. The teams 10-14 play each other for the picks 10-14. Then have the final 10 teams play each other the last team standing wins the first pick in the up coming Draft. This will eliminate tanking thus making the NBA as a whole more competitive. Also for the All-Star game if the game is poorly played then all players are fined and repeat offenders could face stiffer penalties, such as suspensions, and possibly having their All-Star status removed. I would also have the players select their own charities that they are playing for and have incentives for that player to achieve in the game. Next if players sits out for rest purposes that players is suspended without pay. Repeat offenses results in higher penalties. If the player is our due to a coaches or a team decision then the team is fined the amount that each player is sitting out for. For injured players each week the team doctor must report to the league accurate time that the player is out for. And it must be published to the public the playing status of the players. No more game time decisions they are either out or they are playing that game.
I almost completely agree. The All Star for home court is something I've been preaching for years. I would remove defensive 3 sec immediately. It is the main reason why most of the fans say there is no defence in today's game. I also wouldn't keep in season tournament as is. It is just a bunch of regular season games that count more. It is boring. I like the idea that it is a testing ground for new rules but I would make it a separate single elimination tournament. I would even consider making it a tournament where lottery teams play for draft position.
1. Find a way to get rid of the 2nd apron to help bring dynasties back 2. Decrease the season to 65 games to make each game more valuable, 52 game minimum for awards 3. Minor rule changes to make perimeter defense easier 4. Work on creating an NBA run streaming service for all non-nationally televised games with no risk of blackouts 5. Force ESPN to start games on time 6. Kill the All-Star Game (maybe bring it back after a few years if PLAYERS want it) 7. Adopt WNBA’s reset timeout rule 8. 30-second time limit on referee challenges (if you can’t come to a conclusion after 30-seconds, there isn’t enough evidence) 9. Turn NBA Playoffs to 1-16 seeding 10. Make first round of playoffs best of 5
Analytics say that Mid range jumpers are useless and you should only shoot 3s and lay ups, so making those two types of shots harder with the improved 3pt distance alongside removing the defensive 3 second violation is a genius move. That would definitely bring the mid range back
I see you said nothing about the front offices. Load management, tanking and analytics come from the teams, not the players. But I guess blaming the players is easier
i agree with basically everything you said except i'd go ahead and bring back hand-checking right now. i would also keep corner 3s but extend them back at least 1 foot on each side. i know you'd have to widen the court slightly but i think the league could accommodate that. i would also consider forcing at least some all stars to participate in the dunk contest and the 3 point contest. MLB does the all star stuff perfectly because the stars show up for the home run derby.
Make it to where threes that hit the rim can’t be offensively rebounded. Best fix I’ve heard and I came up with it myself. Never see anyone else talk about this idea
My idea of getting rid of flopping is to have reviewers at the end of the game. Each flop is equivalent to one game suspension. So, if a player flops 3x, then he will be suspended for the next 3 games, if he flops 10 then suspension for 10 games.
I think incentivizing full court basketball would be interesting. Maybe allowing the clock to stop in the fourth quarter when the defense has a defender playing full court d until the offense gets the ball past half court. Bringing back hand checking would also solve many issues.
Solid list, I would only argue against extending the three line, I dont think its actually the reason why they will need to extend it if you add the hand checking and remove the 3 second violation. I feel this would make it harder to score threes already.
Glad someone shouting out finals home court advantage based on All Star winner. That’d be must see television. The conferences are uneven anyways, you can get 4 easy wins from each of your conference bottom feeders.
How to fix NBA is such an easy task...you only need to make minor adjustments. 1. For the first 3 quarters of the game, every shot counts for two points. On the last quarter, 3 point shots DO count as 3 point shots. Let me see how many are brave enough to shoot from the logo after 36 minutes of play to win a close game. 2. Steal = 1 point, block = 1 point, 24'' violation = 1 point. 3. Get rid of 3'' violation. That's it. I guarantee you that NBA will become great and competitive again.
Dios te oiga Jonny, esperemos que algún día se tomen estas medidas que propusiste. También me gustaría un vídeo con mas nuevas reglas que añadirías. Saludos desde Argentina.
If you were made the Commissioner of the NBA, what is the FIRST THING you would address?
Load management
Cancel guaranteed contracts straight up
I'd get rid of defensive 3 seconds, opens unnecessary holes in the defense, especially in zone
Flopping
Referees and their softness. I would fine referees for phantom calls, unnecessary technicals, and blatant missed calls.
Another rule idea. No player can have more podcasts episodes than games played
Paul George would be out of the league
LMFAOOOO
Underrated 😂
😂
Welp there goes half the leagues
For the all star game, I'd also bring back players wearing their own team's jerseys.
Hell yeah
And back to west-east team not this stupid bs team leflop or durant
That would be awesome
man.. and change the jerseys, too. They all look the same.
@@Zlociutkii haven't they done east v west for the past couple years? I don't think anyone is applauding these games for that bs
Main problem is the TV contracts. Fans need to be able to watch all their home team's games for free.
I say get rid of offensive three second lane violation. That will bring centers back
Facts
You mean defensive three seconds.
@@legendarywiimaster No, I mean offensive. Let offensive players camp in the lane. That would balance the game, which has gone too three point happy
@ I would say that would work, but make the defensive three second like 7 seconds
At least extend it to 5-7 seconds in the lane.
How about making games more accessible? Most people watch via streams, as it's impossible to watch all your games via one platform (gamepass, cable, etc).
I'm surprised this wasn't addressed. I think this is the biggest issue
Just change the "anti defense" rules and don't expect immediately big results
What Jonny & you guys ignore is that a big part of the problem is modern audiences. You expect these guys to sit near 2 hours with force commercial brakes. Jonny rules & removing anti defense rules appeal to more traditional nba heads & those already care in the 1st place. Also the nba is getting paid big time, revenues have only increased so far.
@Refreshment01 yeah that too
@@Refreshment01yes they would
The fast paced non defense is clearly not working
It's much more worthy and more fun to watch guys competing and having great defense even if it is meant to be a longer game.
@@jeromecruz3237agree 100% people aren’t happy with the current state of the league hence they make vids like this lmao
I wish I could like this comment twice
Absolutely right on all counts.
Also, whining to the refs should be flagrant fouls on top of flopping being a technical foul.
Damn, I agree with this wholeheartedly.
🎯💯
Fix “blackout” bs on local games, allow hand checking, change paint to 5 seconds, refs need to be way more lenient on good defenders. Your partial refund idea is amazing.
I agree with removing bs technicals. They should also suspend players who throw punches or attack fans for around 20-30 games and require they take a pay cut based on the percentage of games missed during the suspension.
The playoffs drag out way to long, first round needs to go back to a 5 game series.
No way
I agree with you 100% about cutting the first-round playoffs to the best of five games. All of the other series and the Finals can remain best of seven.
Basketball is a game for winter. Why in hell are they still playing their game into mid June?

I love the Allstar Homecourt idea! It works in baseball.
Happy New Year's Day, Jonny.
Bringing back the old rules of the 80s/90s during the NBA Cup is a great idea.
Why would u eliminate zone defense?
@Scotty.813 Your comment doesn't argue against my statement outside of saying "no you're wrong."
The ratings being higher in the 90's makes sense since one of the most popular and influential basketball players ever played then. The 2000s having zone defense reinstated and still being behind the 90's in ratings means that zone defense wasn't the issue
And if the ppg dropped when zone defense was reinstated then wouldn't that say defense was being played?
No defense 3 second volation will only make people shoot more threes as it will be very hard to drive in or post up
Jonny for Commissioner!
I agree! Should only be for driving layups and dunks. I don't understand how it had become acceptable for a jump shot..
@tzovlask Also I would disallow the double stepbacks, they be taking 4 steps and not get called for it. Just do a normal stepback and that's it, dont allow any extras

Happy new year Jonny, I love your videos
I’m sure it’s been said, but I think lengthening the 3 point line would just make corner 3s the only shot, it would maybe lessen 3 pointers for a bit, but eventually every other play would be a corner 3 attempt. Great video! I have been saying the all star game should determine home field advantage in the finals for years now, so nice to hear someone else with the same idea!
I agree with almost everything in this video. The only thing I would change is the 3 second rule. Instead of a three second rule, I would change it to a 6 second rule. Great video
I'm so proud to be that early to a Jonny Arnett's video!

I actually like the defensive All-Star game MVP idea
4:30 Baseball used to do this… The League (ie conference) who won the All-Star game held home field advantage in the World Series.
They did this for different reasons but… Regardless, it's not a terrible idea
Possibly your best video ever Jonny.
I appreciate that!
Happy new year!🎊
Happy new year to you as well! Lets make 2025 the best one yet :)
NBA Jam-like "hot spots" worth four points would be an interesting experiment.
Absolutely hard pass. All other shots would be considered useless if they implemented this.
You talked about everything I would do as commissioner.
Agree on most of them. In fact they should already be in place. There also must be a way of preventing players from switching teams every season
Can you elaborate are you talking about guys on one year contract or guys like harden who leave for no reason?
Limiting player's trade would make trades much rarer, which would have a greater impact on the league's journeymen and two-way guys rather than the league's superstars...
I say the league shouldn't allow trades and trade requests until the player's contract expires.
That fucks with free agency@@chasethekid11
Helllll yeah Johnnnyyyyyyyy everything, fire adam
PEACE and happy new year
It's a shame this will not be looked at by the NBA. Really great suggestions, and I can easily imagine how great the league would be!
Great video Jonny. What do you think about having head coaches and/or players decide end of season awards instead of the media?
Terrific ideas! In a just world, these things would happen and NBA would go back to being must see TV!
Loved it! Great ideas.
I love the idea of testing changes in the NBA cup before they get fully implemented
Another great video as usual. Thanks for your hard work.
Here is what I would do:
1) make the 3 pt line at 22 feet all around the basket.
EDIT:
Come to think of it, I will also abandon offensive 3 second violation too. Camping under the basket would be the antidote for the too many threes.
I would get rid of all-star games across every sport, but NBA Players vs. G-Leaguers is an interesting idea.
Testing rule changes during the cup would be really smart. I love that idea
yes, bring some intensity back! let the emotion back on the court
3 sec rule. Would that effectively mean teams can play zone? That would be interesting for sure.
1. Reduce the season to 72 games.
2. Make the first round best of 5 again (2-2-1)
3. Make the playoff game back to back with a travel day to switch cities.
4. Later rounds (2-2-1-1-1) 11 days max for a series that goes to 7 games.
I'd like to move the season some as well but you begin to have conflicts with the Super Bowl and March Madness.
jonny ive been hating some of the shit youve been saying recently, good content keep it up im entertained
TheRealMindCrime brought us here
I wholeheartedly AGREE with EVERYTHING (well almost everything, don't care much about the Cup, but I understand why you wonna keep it).
*before watching I thought I'll share my list of changes*
1) Balance the interpretation of the rules so that block/charge & reach/ shooting foul get called roughly even over the whole league.
2) Increase the off-season duration
3) Increase limitations of salary cap to prevent teams from buying championships
4) Reexamine the hand-checking rule to reduce the effect of 5 out spacing. (Slightly more contact allows slightly less defensive brakedowns, which limits open three opportunities).
Looking forward to your changes!
I would bring back:
1. Hand checking
2. Increase the dunk to 3 points.
- I would then define the dunk as where the any part of the wrist/arm or hand/fingers hits the rim when throwing it down.
3. The team that wins the Cup as an automatic playoff birth along with a major bonus payout for all players that win the cup.
You have my vote, buddy. Go ahead and get it done 👍👍👍
Exactly..
You can't do this because what if a certain division has 3 50-win teams?
Great suggestions Jonny. That whole idea of a NBA cup is so not needed. But like you said, if it bring back more defense. Then it's a good thing.....
This whole video was facts
Financial incentives for the conference that wins the all-star game and the losing team gets nothing. Great video!
MLB literally tried the "ASG winner gets home field in the World Series" and everyone hated it
Steps are limited to 2 after the last Dribble returns to the hand.
Here are a few other changes I would make:
They inspire a sense of team and city spirit that "Phila" and "Cavs" don't
extended 3 pt line + bring back hand checking and remove defensive 3 secs + reduction of total games to around 60 so no back to backs and less 2 games in 3 nights
If you are keeping the corner 3s, then, have a 3-second violation in the corner area; If a ref decides to eject a player, it must be agreed by the other 2 refs and Steve Javie
6:35 I know it's crazy to say but another Malice in the Palace type of incident might just be what the NBA needs
100%! I’m sick of watching a bunch of overpaid beta males flop all over the place.
That was an embarrassing blight on the league. Short term media hoopla doesn’t fix the product either.
The NBA Cup needs a bigger award
Bring back hand checking and get rid of 3 second violations in the paint..and raise the salary of the referees by about 5x more but make them accountable for their own mistakes by getting suspended for months or a full season..fine flopping by 25% of a player's salary if proven., Get rid of load management by getting rid of guaranteed contracts..
...and my friend asked me this question and I thought "That's the perfect idea for a video!"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol, I may have a problem 😂
The 3-point dunk is the idea that I desperately need want to see tested
I almost completely agree. The All Star for home court is something I've been preaching for years. I would remove defensive 3 sec immediately. It is the main reason why most of the fans say there is no defence in today's game. I also wouldn't keep in season tournament as is. It is just a bunch of regular season games that count more. It is boring. I like the idea that it is a testing ground for new rules but I would make it a separate single elimination tournament. I would even consider making it a tournament where lottery teams play for draft position.
1. Find a way to get rid of the 2nd apron to help bring dynasties back
2. Decrease the season to 65 games to make each game more valuable, 52 game minimum for awards
3. Minor rule changes to make perimeter defense easier
4. Work on creating an NBA run streaming service for all non-nationally televised games with no risk of blackouts
5. Force ESPN to start games on time
6. Kill the All-Star Game (maybe bring it back after a few years if PLAYERS want it)
7. Adopt WNBA’s reset timeout rule
8. 30-second time limit on referee challenges (if you can’t come to a conclusion after 30-seconds, there isn’t enough evidence)
9. Turn NBA Playoffs to 1-16 seeding
10. Make first round of playoffs best of 5
65 games? 😂😂
They loadmanage so much now that most of them don't play so much
82 games should stay
Great video! I love the ideas. But on the 3pt, I would make the court to 5’ wider and make the corner 3 a 25’ shoot. 💪
My idea of getting rid of flopping is to have reviewers at the end of the game. Each flop is equivalent to one game suspension. So, if a player flops 3x, then he will be suspended for the next 3 games, if he flops 10 then suspension for 10 games.
Jeez this dude was cooking 🔥!! A lot of amazing ideas!
I want the 3 second gone or add one to 3 point line don’t punish players for camping in the paint or punish shooters standing around
Just thinking bout a vid from you
No more One and Done!!!
Dios te oiga Jonny, esperemos que algún día se tomen estas medidas que propusiste.
