My biggest regret is a generalized regret. After a player retires, I wish that I had watched them more when they played. I feel like I kind of take it for granted when a player is doing it every night 82 times a year. I don't have the time or the patience to watch anyone that much. Once they are gone though, I wish that I had watched them.

My two biggest basketball regrets: 1) I was watching the Pacers and Pistons on November 19, 2004 and turned it off a little after halftime because my girlfriend and I had early plans the next day. It wasn't until later the next night that we were watching TV and I saw that I missed the Malice at the Palace. I mean, I could have watched that unfold live...
    2) My wife and I had just gotten married and were getting ready to go to meet some friends for dinner during the playoffs. The Bulls were playing and it was late in the fourth quarter, like two minutes left, and I told her we couldn't leave because the game wasn't over. She gives me the look and I say, "but it's only two minutes and then we can go." She's not a sports fan so didn't know that those two minutes would take twenty. She's also not stupid so I haven't ever been able to use that argument again and I regret that I wasted it on a bullshit playoff game.

@@zw8596 Bro that’s basically what happened to me. I was watching that Pacers/Pistons game that night and changed the channel at halftime or commercial break (can’t remember when exactly) and ended up watching another program completely forgetting to change back to the game. The next day I saw the brawl on the news and was so pissed off that missed a historical moment on live TV lol

My biggest regret: passing up free tickets to see Kobe drop 81. Context... I'm a Spurs fan and hate the Lakers, Rockets, Mavs and Thunder. I was in LA for work when one of my buddies said "bro I got an extra ticket to the game... wife is sick... want to go?" and I said, "appreciate it man but F- the Lakers!" We both laughed, I went out to get dinner drinks and missed out on a historic performance.

As a near 40 year old life long Chicago sports fan, I feel the same way about Pippen as you do about Shaq. I started watching the Bulls religiously during the 92-93 season and of course it was all about Jordan. The the next year he abruptly retired and the Bulls had an amazing season, and I went to my first Bulls game that season, watching the Bulls blow out the Hawks at old Chicago Stadium. I remember watching Pippen go off in the All Star game with his red shoes and win the All Star MVP. And yet, the moment MJ came back late in the '95 season, it was as if everything I had just witnessed Pippen do over the past two years was erased and it was all about Jordan again. I was too young to appreciate defense, facilitating, and all of the other less flashy things that go into winning.

I’m right there w/ u bro. What’s crazy is that when I used to play NBA Live 95+, whenever I created a player, they always mimicked Pip’s skills. Pippen wasn’t as appreciated like MJ, but MJ himself has said there’s no MJ at this magnitude w/ Pip.
Scottie is also my frat brother, though we’ve never met. Hoping I can meet him in person like I’ve done w/ other sports legends who r my frat brothers to give him his flowers.

My biggest basketball regret probably has nothing to do with the NBA but more so my own personal regret. When I was young, I wanted nothing more than to dunk a basketball. I was 16 when I first achieved this goal. Standing at 5'8", I was proud of myself.
My biggest regret was that I just stopped playing ball altogether...
Don't ever give up on your dreams. Work hard enough, and you might just achieve it.

    • @jonnyarnett
      @jonnyarnett  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +31

Agreed. A core memory is a family member telling me to "focus on something more realistic", which just crushed my hoop dreams as a kid.
RARELY do you hear someone regretting trying their best to achieve a dream. Instead you hear people saying all the time that they regret not striving for their dream when they had the chance.

    • @marcmata5574
      @marcmata5574 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

@jonnyarnett My philosophy now is that you only live once. You only get to make as much noise and ripples in this crazy life before it's all over. Kobe taught me (albeit later on in life) to give it your all when you're doing something. No matter what it is.
I'll reiterate. If you're a young person or just any person with a dream watching this video. DO NOT GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS. Anyone who tells you to focus on more realistic goals aren't dreamers.
Johnny, you'll get to 1 million subs within the next 2 - 4 years. I believe it.

Excellent video, Sir. That Kobe Final Game story was BRUTAL. My guess is, and I hope I am right, that you were able to see The Mamba a few times in his career. I was able to see him only twice. I live in Florida. I went to the '09 Finals Game 4 and, believe it or not, the other game I went to was the Matt Barnes ball fake game the next season. I was always a Lakers fan since the mis 80's, and then a HUGE Kobe fan. His drive and determination has always been inspirational.
I feel like I appreciated Shaq a lot more when he was in Orlando. He came off as much more freakish early on with his combination of size, speed, and athleticism. Obviously, he was still more than great when he got to LA but he got a lot bigger, fast. I am not sure Shaq ever had the best work ethic when it came to basketball but when Kobe showed up his relentless pursuit of basketball greatness only made Shaq's questionable work ethic look very much worse. Do not misunderstand, Shaq's greatness cannot be overstated for that 3 year run, but he was a different player by then. Almost all size and power. Much less finesse and athleticism, although he could still surprise you with a move from time to time. As you said, so much of what Shaq did by then was a Shaq post-up and a massive dunk (he was a Great passer out of the Post as well). The LSU-Orlando Shaq was something different.

    My biggest regret:
I’m from Mike D’Antoni’s hometown, and happened to attend church with his old high school basketball coach. Every year Mike gave him tickets to come see his team play in charlotte. My senior year was 2012-13, or the last year of Kobe’s prime, and he was coaching my Lakers. Mike’s coach, invited me at church to go watch the 12-13 Lakers play in Charlotte with him. I had made a prior commitment and couldn’t go.

I was the exact opposite with the Lakers where I focused so much on Shaq and not as much on Kobe because I was low-key a Kobe hater because he was too similar to MJ. I regret that because I really overlooked his development into one of the greatest of all time and didn't really appreciate his talents until Shaq left.
Have to agree with you on the Shaq/Wilt take. Wilt was dominant but Shaq was literally taking grown men's manhood on the court. I can't say anyone comes close when it comes to dominating the paint like that.

I love that even when Jonny is making a opinion video he still gives nuance to his picks like with shaq and wilt who is dominant and in what sense so many people just say wilt is dominant and say it was his physical gifts but almost no one acknowledges that he played a finesse game along with being physically dominant which wilt himself admitted it probably costed him a couple times. Also Giannis isn't comparable at all to prime Lakers shaq at most an argument could be made for magic shaq when he was more slim but even then it's a stretch.

But I traded them in for tickets to game 4 because I wasn't sure if the Bulls could take the defending Champs to 6 games ...... Huge mistake, we all know that game 6 ended up being that triple overtime classic..... And game 4 ended up being the worst game of the series as a Bulls fan, they got blew out that game, all though I did get to see Rose receive his Rookie of year award that game, still doesn't compare to the experience I missed out on from that epic game 6...... It's interesting to hear this considering I'm 35 (well, technically I'll be 35 this month) and I started watching almost 30 years ago (1996 to be specific).
I might actually be on the other side of the rode with the Kobe-Shaq thing. At the beginning, if anything, I was probably more of a Shaq guy. Loved Kobe, but in the 90s he was clearly not the star while Shaq was considered a candidate for best player in the league. I slowly became more of a Kobe guy as the years went by, and by the end of that "era", I was glad we were keeping Kobe instead of Shaq. Now, if I do have some sort of regret, is that I think I took the Kobe-Shaq combination for granted. In terms of basketball, I was born with it, so while I knew they were obviously special, I'm not sure if I could appreciate how really special they were.
The whole memorabilia thing is interesting to hear. I'm not from the US really, and I didn't even have access to that kind of stuff, I didn't even have access to NBA jerseys for many years. I do wonder what would I've done. The story about Kobe's final game hurts. I was in Spain, I'm not rich by any means, but had I known that final game was gonna be that special, and for $100 the ticket, I kid you not, I would've flied to L.A. just to watch that game, because that's how special it was. My decision at the time though was "should I watch this game from this Laker team that sucks that starts at 4:30AM here when I have an exam at 8:00AM?" I was considering for a moment skipping it, but then I thought that even if he scored 15 points, I had seen all 20 years of his career playing for the team I like, from kid to adult... so yeah, I just had to watch it, and I thank god I chose to do so.
As a whole, I haven't really had that many choices to regret or be thankful for because I barely had access to the NBA. I couldn't really choose to buy something or not, but of course there's a ton in terms of appreciating things more and the like. One that comes to mind is not appreciating Orlando T-Mac enough because I was an immature kid and saw him as Kobe's competition (and AI's who I was also a fan of) and for reasons that had nothing to to with T-Mac himself or his game, I was pretty much a hater (nowadays, T-Mac is one of my All-Time favorite players). I was actually kinda mad when he scored 62, and now I feel it's so stupid. I watched the game and instead of being in awe, I was mad (pretty sure he was the first perimeter player to score 60 since MJ at the time).

    My biggest NBA basketball regret:
In fall of 1995 I went to the Berto Center to hopefully get MJs autograph. I stood with a few others at the gate and watched as cars would come up, wait for it to open, and leave.
Seemingly randomly, the gate opened without anyone pulling up. Then Jordan showed up in his Corvette and sped through. Gate closed.
I was distraught I hadn't even had a chance to ask him and just saw him a couple feet away from me through his 'vette window.
In the lot I watched Steve Kerr getting into his Cutlass Ciera. Unlike today, he wasn't well known, but I did know who he was since I was a giant Bulls fan.
I opted not to wait for him and went back to my parents car. As we drove off, other kids were getting his autograph.

Instead of giving us the night off, my head coach made the lineman attend a 7 on 7 game to support our skill position guys. The time was during the 2nd half of Game 7 of the 2016 Finals. I should’ve just skipped and stayed in and accepted a punishment, because I missed one of if not the greatest game of all time

Ouch. I was just jaw on the floor the whole fourth thinking is Cleveland actually going to beat these guys? I thought for sure the Warriors were going to blow them out when Draymond started hot from the three point line. Watching LeBron block Iguodala's layup might be the most exciting moment I have had as a fan watching a game not involving the Spurs.

I got a few regrets as an NBA fan.
One of them was not going to a Nuggets home game one weekend I traveled to my hometown Denver for the first time in years. I was too focused on visiting family that I didn’t bring myself to shed out a couple hundred bucks from my wallet and go. It’s not too late now, but back then I was by myself with no kids. Today I’m married with two kids, and even though it would be a fun experience, I would have to spend way more money not on myself, but also on my whole family than if had done it 6 years ago. So yeah that’s one of my regrets lol
P.S. I did make up for it by going to a Hornets game later that year and watching them beat the eventual champion Raptors on a buzzer beater. So I don’t feel all that bad lol

I another regret I have is missing out on 2006-2008 because my family and I moved out of the US for a couple years. It wasn’t really my fault since I didn’t really have a choice, but I missed out on so many great moments during that period, such as Dwyane Wade’s Jordan-esque Finals performance, LeBron James scoring 25 straight points against the Pistons, and the Celtics’ dominant 2008 season. I’m also mad that I missed Allen Iverson’s entire tenure with the Denver Nuggets.

I guess my regret relates to being a fan of the Nets. I was a New Jersey Nets fan growing up (favorite player Kerry Kittles). When I become a fan, I stick with the team no matter what (I'm an Oaklan Athletics fan for example; I know, it's tough). However, that doesn't apply if my team decides to move cities, which the Nets did.
I decided I could switch teams and not feel like a bandwagon fan. I didn't and am still a Nets fan. The Nets continue to be awful (or plagued by injuries) and I could have picked a championship contender or a team with a bright future.

I wrote a letter of congratulations to the Bulls team for their 1991 Championship. I included cards from the 1991 NBA Hoops set of the entire team, in duplicate, offering for them each to keep their card and asking them to please autograph the other and send it back. The only response I got was from MJ. The return envelope appeared to be hand addressed, 3 of the cards were autographed and a note "With the compliments of Michael Jordan" and the Jumpman logo. I have since lost track of those cards and the envelope. Should have taken way more care of them. That's my Basketball regret.
People can say whatever they want about others being better than MJ, or him being a complete jerk, but from a roster of 12+, he was the only one to take the time to respond. MJ is my GOAT forever.

My biggest regret was quitting following the sport actively from late 00's to late 10's.
I was really into the sport from late 80's as 10-year old kid thanks to my big-sis, who was pretty great in those standards, racking up several national championships and some national team appearences. Followed womens basketball, mens basketball both around Europe and NBA really closely and also some NCAA.
By the time Hanno Möttölä retired from NBA and Lauri Markkanen emerged as an NBA, i kinda lost track and interest only watching some Finnish NT-games. Around the time we had no coverage here from NBA and our national team kinda sucked too.
But damn the sport is great, although not a particular fan of how NBA is being played with all the travelling, carrying and charging. I did miss out on a lot.

However I regret not asking anyone on the team for an autograph when they finished, & distinctly remember seeing Chauncey Billups, & Allen Iverson head back into the tunnel.

My biggest regret, as a teen, was not attempting more to watch Jordan in the mid-late 80s, before the Piston Bad Boys 2 championships.
Being in Australia in the mid 80s, watching footage was nearly impossible (we had no cable TV or nearly no games on free-to-air TV at all), but I had friends with US connections and I didn't sit/insist/organise to watch those games.
All we really had on regular TV were "maybe" a once-a-week random game, and midnight tape-delay replays of the NBA finals (when Magic and/or Larry were involved).

I was a kid in the 80s and I could have seen the Lakers and Celtics rivalry as it was happening, but just I didn't have any interest until much later. I think my biggest regret as an NBA fan was hating the Celtics in the 80s so much I really didn't appreciate how amazing they were and would sometimes skip their games when they were on CBS and TBS. I was a huge fan of Magic and always rooted for Philly, Detroit, Atlanta, or Milwaukee too any time they faced Bird's Celtics. They're now probably my favorite team to go back and watch old games from. Thankfully by my teens/early twenties I didn't make the same mistake with the Shaq & Kobe Lakers who I genuinely did hate as a bitter rival to my Spurs. But I didn't let that stop me from watching their games as a fan of the game and appreciating Shaq's post footwork, how much of an assassin Kobe was, Robert Horry and Derek Fisher being a couple of the greatest glue guys I have ever seen, etc. Since I went to school in LA during their threepeat I also got to take advantage of being able to watch every road game of theirs on KCAL as well as them being on NBC every weekend (couldn't afford cable as a student so missed most of the home games unless they were on NBC).

I don’t really regret anything so I’ll just share something that I wished happened that didn’t. I wish Kevin Durant’s shot in the 2021 ECSF Game 7 was a 3 instead of a 2. In the 2021 playoffs, I vividly remember Kevin Durant going off in the 2nd round against the bucks, including his 49 pt triple double in game 5. But for game 7, I was actually on vacation with my parents and all of us watched game 7. It was the best basketball experience of my life and all of us went crazy when KD hit that shot, only to realize that his foot was barely on the line. The bucks went on to win the game and the series in a bit of an anticlimactic OT and I was devastated and it kind of ruined the rest of the playoffs for me. If KD and the nets won that ring after Durant’s Achilles tear in 2019, it would’ve been perfect for me.
