First thing I noticed 🥺
Same that's first thing I noticed too
YES!!! LOVE YOU, CHI !!!
3 VRIL
My band Taproot had the great pleasure of touring the U.S. on the Back to School tour in 2000 with Deftones and Incubus, then throughout Europe in 2001 with Deftones and Linkin Park. To this day, Deftones is the only band I watched consistently every night while on tour. Fantastic band and great interview! Cheers! - Jarrod
I swear I caught y’all once.. late 90s or maybe 2000.. and for the life of me right now I can’t remember who y’all were paired up with. Y’all were badass though.
I would have saw y’all in Houston for sure.
Listen to gift weekly btw lmao
Caught you and Deftones in Paris on the European branch of the tour. Memorable gigs that night: since I'm blind as a bat, I'd brought a pair of replacement glasses just in case, which ended up getting crushed in the pit on the very first note of your second song of the set. Lots of fun!
Hell to the yeah, Taproot got heavy rotation from me in high school and after
I saw you on that tour. SECC in Glasgow with Deftones and Linkin Park. It was awesome man. I was already a fan and had just bought your Gift CD. I went to see you again in 2002 when you were supporting Pitchshifter in The Garage in Glasgow. Awesome live band🤘🤘
Deftones was probably the best alternative metal band to come out of the 90s.
*is*
And because of Tik tok, the 2020’s
Nah... crybaby sound. For depressed cutting teens that skateboard
IF NOT FOR KORN NO ONE WOULD OF KNOWN ANY OF THESE BANDS ILL PUT THAT FIRST KORN ALBUM UP AGAINST ANY NU METAL BAND. I WAS A JUNIOR IN HIGHSCHOOL WHEN THAT ALBUM CAME OUT AND THE FIRST RATM ALBUMS WERE THE DEFINITON OF GAME CHANGERS!
Probably?
Had a friend recommend an album called 'Adrenaline' while I was in highschool. The Deftones have played a lovely role in my life since.
Engine No. 9 and Bored hit different though
haha bro best album i discovered in 1996 97
@@caelenselke-minogue haha cool to see that other people also liked those songs classics now man . cheers
Amazing interview. My best friend/ bandmate passed away in 2009. He had the self title tattooed on his leg. And after he pass I got it done on my forearm. Deftones was a band that made us click. Steph has always been a huge influence on my guitar playing. Steph’s an amazing dude
Same
I hate when he says he’s not technical, or just plays power chords. Steph is a guitar wizard! Very unique and heavy as shit. His chord voicings are so cool. He’s the backbone of deftones
It often seems to be the way with talented artists. He's a sum of his parts. There's a lot more talent in knowing what to do to create a good song, over doing stuff to show everyone how talented you are.
Stop it. He's not very technical and he just said that.
I grew up in Sacramento when these guys were starting out. I've seen them at least 20 times at The cattle club, if anyone remembers from back in the day.
I amemba.
Bo Jangles lol
Cattle Club, Empire, Stockton Rocks and a few times at the Crest Theatre. At the time I've seen them Far was more popular but not sure what happened to the players. Kai Kln was very popular then too and they played together a few times. Cake was more my style.
Yo sactown 😅
Hey Steph, thanks for doing those play-throughs. Something to look forward to during tough times
Love Steph
Love his honesty
Love his guitar playing and Deftones.
I have to see them “with Steph” one of these days when they come to Chicago.
Definitely one of my influences even though I don’t own a 7 or 8 string guitar, love the low tuned riffs, Stephen uses them with taste. Good to see Steph on YT on Rock Feed
Can’t wait for another Deftones album. Thank you for the awesome interview.🤘
He honestly believes the Earth is flat and 9/11 just flat out didn't happen.
They’re touring there in the spring. Get a ticket, they’re selling fast. Got mine for the Ohio dates!
Kick ass! I didn’t know they were touring in 2025? Maybe new music too? Can’t wait to hear Steph’s guitar live.
@@davidlawson7786 yeah tickets are kind of expensive but it’s worth it for them
No way Stephen Carpenter is wearing the band Bilmuri's shirt. Wow.
無理 NAYSH 🇺🇸
I love bilmuri bro
How tf you pronounce that. Like the actor? Bill Murray?
@@AnthonyManaro yeah
damn, you just made me a absolute fan ! Thank you so much !
Deftones my favorite band. Great interview. Nice work. Can’t wait to hear the next record 👊🏼
Listened to Deftones since I was a kid, im 40 now. Back in 97,98 is when I first heard them with Around the fur. Always been a pretty solid ass band and still listen to them to this day. No guitar wankery from Steph, just heavy ass riffs and good melodies.
Same here (42) and been down since AROUND THE FUR. I somehow missed Adrenaline, but fell in love with the tones when I got those two records in my ears!
Can't wait for new music
Same here at 41! Heard them first just when Around The Fur was just release and first saw their album at Tower Records under “new release”.
Same here at 39! Look at all of us 1982-1985 babies who share a love for one of the best bands out there 😁 I discovered them during Around the Fur and immediately fell in love. Adrenaline right after and the rest is history 🙌
44 here. I've been a fan since I first heard "bored" in 95. I've seen them live at least 20 times.
I met Steph in Vancouver, BC back in 1998. My friend and I went to Warped Tour '98 when we were 16. I only wanted to see Rancid and Deftones. After Rancid's set, I took 10 steps to my right and Deftones started with Headup. Steph walks on stage with a joint in his mouth during the feedback. Then puts it on his guitar's head and would puff on it randomly. When the shows ended, my friend and I went to our hotel by the venue. As we walk to the elevator, the doors open and Steph comes out on his BMX, rides passed us, and says "Nice shirt" to me since I had the Adrenaline screaming kitty shirt on. I say thanks and go in the elevator. After I shower, I put my new Deftones shirt I bought at Warped, put a pen and the Adrenaline cd sleeve in my pocket in case I see him again. My friend and I go back out for a walk. About a half block from the hotel we run into Steph again. I try to tell my favourite guitarist at that time that it was a great set, but my 16 year old brain just quits when I open my mouth. He smiles and reminds me to slow down. I finally say he had a great set, that I was there for only Deftones and Rancid, and he's my favourite guitarist. He was such a humble dude and said thanks and shakes my hand. We part ways. A half block away I put my hand in my pocket and realized I forgot to ask for his autograph. I was bummed.
I'll smoke to that
Hope you didnt started to cut yourself from this dissapointment
Yes! I was at the Australian warped tour in Byron bay, went with my big bro, was 14, and was hooked around the fur, forever my favourite
The picture Chi in the background. Rest in peace brother. Miss you so much man
I love Steph and Deftones! I can't wait to see them at the Golden Park SF show in August!
That’s gonna be an amazing show
@@RockFeed Definitely, I’m from Sacramento and have been a life long fan. But I can’t even tell you how excited I am for this show!
@@RockFeedyou going??
I'm going too, it's going to be awesome!
No Steph 😢
Hell yes, thank you Rockfeed
Thank you to Mr. Carpenter for all of the chords and influence given over the years
amazing interview! So cool you're basically fans of each other :D Thanks for sharing!
Aye, congrats brother, this is so sick! Hes a huge influence on my writing style. its awesome to see this!
1996 Austin Texas, my first Deftones show: last tour date with Human Waste Project. Killer show! It was pre-social media. It lives in my mind forever. Life changing. Lifter was my first track to fall in love with. CHEERS TO THE DEFTONES!
Liberty lunch! I was at that show. Best $7 spent lol
My band played with these guys during the adrenaline tour. We became pretty tight. The nicest dudes ever. I gave Steph a demo and the dude who I called my favorite guitar player actually calls me after the tour to tell me how much he loves my riffs. He actually played one of my riffs over the phone from his stereo and was analyzing my work. What a cool dude!!! I was starstruck and very flattered.
Awesome interview! I was so excited to hear this.
Awesome interview man! Deftones is king 🤘
DEFTONES has done sooo much for music! They set the bar!
Not hating but how did they set the bar.
Man guys lol all albums set the bar . Even the most recent OHMS looks at critic and fan reviews . Always relevant
@@dirtybeard70_Alivein85to be original and unique.
@@dirtybeard70_Alivein85There is no denying that they did something new and original that many aim to imitate.
I remember back in day when computer/internet was barely out I use to go to the deftones forum. And fans would be able to post and ask the band mate questions and the band member would reply back, twice Chi reply back on two different post. Gave me a whole lotta respect for him. Made a big fan kids day. He was my first and only band celeb that reply back to me. RIP Chi.
Bryan, as somebody who has been here since 5k, I’m so pumped for you. Never stop being a fan man. That’s why these guys gravitate toward you. You’re not some asshole looking for a scoop, you love this shit. Being the fan you are and have been will take you so far. Proud Rockfeed subscriber and I’ll never waver in telling people about you.
Waiver? Did I say that correctly?
These guys being an old friend band makes me always absolutely love them!! 🤟
When I was 16 there was a record store that let you sample CDs before you bought them. This was 1996, so there was no internet. I would just go in and rifle through different metal CDs and pick one that looked interesting. I saw 'Adrenline' and liked the band name "Deftones". I knew nothing about them, but I thought, "why not?"
I took it up to the counter and he put in the CD. I went over to the headphones, put them on, and pressed play. Immediately I was transfixed with 'Bored'. Sat there and listened to the whole album. I've been a fan ever since.
I saw them play backyards back when I lived in Stockton. I worked at Tower in Stockton and Sac. Ran into them alot. Nicest guys. They are game changers. They are legends
What up Steph, SACTOWN BABY !!
To me as a guitar player, youre a tone guru !!
Been a fan since Around the fur but My favorite Deftones album is Diamond eyes. It Just has a huge crushing guitar sound !! 🤘😖
Love this conversation guys !!
I've been a deftones fan since I was 16 (I'm 42 now). Best memory was when Steph signed my tshirt in columbus ohio (magnolia thunderpussy) and he was totally checking me out afterwards...Best day of my LIFE ❤
Aww man how awesome, I love Stef so much. He replied to me once on Insta before he set up his guitar play throughs and I’ve never forgotten it and used them to learn how to play so many of their songs correctly haha. Can’t wait to hear the new deftones music he has waiting for us and hopefully sol invicto soon too! Awesome interview man, it was really cool to hear him talk about his gear issues - I've read so many articles about that and always try and tell others that he was still a big part of Gore but he had some issues going on - but hearing him go into depth about it all and how it effected Gore directly hopefully sheds some of the negativity on it. I love his positive attitude to life and how he talks about his love for music and animals etc. I hope he's doing well, real fans appreciate him and understand why he has taken a back seat to overseas travel, it was really honest of him to talk about what he's missed out on and his anxiety battles. Congrats on this opportunity, Stef was correct when he mentioned that you're a positive influence on music media. S tier stuff!!
This has been a really great interview. Stephen is so down to earth and cool
Such a humble down to earth dude. "I never really practice that much"..... He just found his jam and stuck with it. Never set out to the best guitar player in the world just be the best guitar player in the world for Deftones.
The host this entire podcast: “dude, bro, bro!, dude!! BRO!!! …dude, bro, dude”
😂
@@RockFeedvery happy for you bro. Love from Staten Island
Dude..... Bro.
Yeah, that is a bad habit for an interviewer to have, it makes the interview difficult to listen to.
@@seanbailey7875 The interview was fine. he was exited because he's a huge fan like many of us .
Much love to you and Steph! Awesome interview!
Riff Legend…. Thanks for curating this!
Deftones opened for Anthrax in Toronto and I chilled for a bit with you and the guys after the show and all of you created life long fans with your energy and music. It's incredible to see the band still inspiring huge crowds live. Hard to describe how much of an impact your band has had on my life!
Loved the interview! Can’t wait for the new album
Been hooked on their awesome music and vibe since I saw them live in Austin, TX in 1997!
Keep at it Stephen. I noticed during your guitar playthrough videos that you def lost some weight and your lookin good man. I ride my bike every day and just listen to music and a lot of the times its your songs that keep me going. 43 years old now and I've been a fan since Adrenaline. You've accomplished more than you know and you've left your mark. Most cant say that. Keep at it dude!
What a cool guy, loving Steph! He actually sounds pretty down to earth and chill. Can't wait for him to do his play-throughs again.
Stephen youre the man! I also have 3 cats and a dog. Appreciate your humbleness and ability to stay present and be true to yourself and those around you. Thank you for your music!
Awesome interview! I was fortunate enough to see Deftones in Berlin in 2013 and got to meet and hangout with them after the show. Met and took pictures individually with all the guys, super cool guys, but my friend and I sat and chilled with Steph for over an hour, drinking beers and he offered us weed of course, had to turn it down since we were in the Army, but he had so many questions for us about the Army and government and stuff, it was awesome. He told us his theories and some stories and it was a night I’ll never forget!
I still remember visiting my cousin and him telling me about this awesome band called Deftones I had to check out. So glad he did, they absolutely rock!
Great interview. Great guitarist. Great band.
Such a cool dude...
Thanks for sharing your art with the world brother.
Thanks for all the work on this show!!
Met Stephen when they toured the White Pony album. Super cool dude! Going to San francisco for this upcoming show. Got the VIP
package.
Stoked !
Thanks for this, it's great to get to know Steph a lil bit more.
THE STRONG ONE. And one love for CHI 🤘🏽❣️
I love that you guys brought up the 90s and early 2000s nu metal nostalgia!
Two incredibly chill dudes having a great time. Wholesome content!
I've been a fan of Stef for so long. It's crazy for me the contrast between how much shit is talked about him in forums/reddit and what a down-to-earth, chill cool dude he is everytime someone records an interaction with him. ❤❤❤❤❤
Such an honest, genuine, interview. Thank you 🙏
Stephtones!! 🤘🏼
I'm a guitarrist, not a very good one, but i like to dabble and write music. Steph is such an inspiration to me 'cause he was never into the shredding thing an still got to write some of the best songs of the last 30 years.
Dude has simplicity down to a science. Great riffs.
Deftones is my number 1 influence. I know it's not for everyone and was one of those guys myself till I dug deep and saw they were not like everyone else. I think thats what makes them stand out from the rest from that time and beyond.
I love how he's wearing a bilmuri shirt. 2 of my fave bands!
Steph is so down to earth and such a guinine person, I feel so fortunate to have met him and Chi as well. Seeing your reaction to have Steph on your channel is the same way I was getting to meet one of my guitar heroes
Sucks bro wasn’t even at golden gate performance with Soad 😢
Love Deftones hard, and love Stef's playing, Viva los Deftones! Much appreciation, much love.
I’ve met Steph on 3 occasions and I was starstruck each time. Could not think of anything to say 😂 The last time was Kiesel Connect. He’s a chill dude. I didn’t realize until recently he wasn’t flying. I can understand why. Good to hear him say that he’s feeling better and better. Hang in there Steph. Keep up the positivity. ❤
So glad to see him, long time! Thanks a lof Rock Feed for the great podcast!
Was a huge kiss fan when I was a kid and the first time I heard/saw Deftones was when they opened for kiss lol. Most of the crowd hated them but it was so different I loved it. Been a fan since.
Great interview!
love this guy hes so cool lol he cracks me up cause hes always smiling and positive. Hes also a free thinker on the huitar Stephen is a righteous dude! when you share a name with stephen king and john carpenter youre about the coolest dude ever lol
Great Interview, Deftones are my favourite band, God bless you both ❤🔥🙌🙏
Steph is so high that even his eyebrows look high. They’re gone 😂
Met these guys after a show at St Andrews Hall in Detroit. They played like an 2 hour set. All of them were amazing humble dudes. Got a pic with Steph and chi. And had a Heineken bottle signed by they guys. Chino gave me a Heineken. Crazy enough Dino from FF was there also.
🙃 My face when he's talking about switching from stereo to mono after I've been spending the last year updating my axe-fx patches to stereo lol
I ❤ those playthroughs the Steph did on the Deftones channel. Great production and sound, also helped me figure out the guitar parts.
I love Steph’s vibes. I hope he starts his channel ❤
Epic interview man!
Steph's guitar tone changed drastically from "Adrenaline" (sounded like a distortion pedal, like a "scooped" Boss Metal Zone and NS-2 into a half-stack) to "White Pony" (that modded Marshall sound, mixed with a solid state power amp.. plus Chino's "pedalboard and combo amp" setup for some songs).
The most constituent band going. Always release great music… can’t wait for the next one
I still have my original Stephen Carpenter model 7 string baritone!!
I still have my 8 string !. 😝 L. T. D. Tho!. Ha😅
@@manicmike3952 Nice!! 7 is enough trouble for me!
Still have mine. Got it back in 2017. It’s been played daily and setup for that low tuning
Got the SCT-607B in 2013. Love it. It’s a workhorse and always brings the tone when I’m needing heavy or melodic.
@@boomerbob Nice! I picked up mine somewhere around 2006, stays in tune for months.
That was a great interview .Steph tone I watch him on green thumb. He’s my favorite guest good dude,
I don't know any other band that I've ever listened to that every album is about 80% solid
This guy has been such an inspiration growing up. My boy KC put me on to them, told me to give them a chance after hearing _Bored_ and him getting that album and loaning it to me. BOOM. Still one of my most favorite albums of all time, Adrenaline. And on, and on.... They never fail.
This was really good
Great Interview Bro !!!!
How did I miss this? Steph is on a different level. As are Deftones
I was so damn stoked to see this man at this years Dia De Los Deftones…❤❤❤❤
Great interview. So glad I saw them in the UK in 97 at Rock City..I used to have a terrible fear of flying. Still have it but slowly got better with it. When' Around The Fur' hit, Deftones made me realise how to create cool dynamics within a song, let alone a record
1990s! One love Deftones! Changed my life forever
Met this cat at a local festival show in 99, he was riding around on a BMX. He signed my deftones shirt. Still have it.
RIp CHI, Stephen Carpenter is my favorite guitarist. I would sit down on my bed after school and pley entire albums in one setting, learning by tab. I first came across Deftones on MTV with SHOVE IT my own summer, and was hypnotized. Stephens guitar riffs are so fun and challanging to play. If Stephen Carpenter wore one of my made shirts i would by dying. Have every album, and just love the spacey hardcore tracks GO DEFTONES!!!
gotta love reppin chi! RIP!
God level song writing.
Stephen Carpenter is so damn cool. Awesome musician. His guitar playing isn't about technicality. It's about the feel. His riffs are powerful and damn memorable. Shredders can play fast etc. but I never remember their songs.
genuine guy
Saw tyou live on these dates, been 7 years waiting for you guys come back to Portugal, we love you \m/

Koi No Yokan is an incredible record and probably my favorite of theirs. I remember being disappointed when it first came out because it was a more difficult listen than the accessible Diamond Eyes... but damn that record has aged like fine wine
100% now to me it's their most creative album
Interviewing one of your musical heroes must be super exciting. Especially when they as cool as Stephen Carpenter.
The Black Sabbath/Pantera/Deftones show was my favorite, growing up listening to Sabbath and live in TX where Pantera Rules, and was learning of Deftones and wearing out the Adrenaline CD
Stephen is such a nice guy! I wish I could have a beer with him and talk about just simple life
Been a fan of the Deftones since I saw the 7 words video on MTV when they actually played music videos away back in the day. Bought Adrenaline the day it came out. Kimdracula, off Saturday Night Wrist might be my favorite song and their shortest song they have. Still have a flyer they handed out at the Rave in Milwaukee back on Dec. 3rd 1998 “Party with the Deftones”. Sucks I had to work early in the morning because it would have been great to meet them in person at the bar after the show that night.
Been listening to Deftones since Adrenaline, first song I heard was Bored, they played the video on Mtv After Hours. I seen them open for Pantera and White Zombie in 1996 when I was 14. Still have my ticket stub. Met them at a signing in '97 they did after a show in support for Around the Fur, still have their signatures, including Chi. Seen them at Ozzfest '99, which was the 3rd time seeing them. Also same Ozzfest I witnessed Slipknot headline the second stage, way before they were huge. My cousin and I literally ran to the stage to get up front. We met the band afterwards too. I miss those times immensely. Seen Deftones the following year for the White Pony tour. Best times ever.
Awesome interview. Stephs guitar playing and sound inspired me to play 24 years back. Deftones are legends. Thanks RF
He a cool dude! Been blessed to see the tones a few times👊
