Even having heard the song many times, I don't think I'd notice the difference if it was just playing somewhere in the background. Unbelievable how he did that!
This is by no means the most challenging song you guys have given a drummer but it was for sure the most impressive. It's scary how quickly he picked up on it.
Just watch Domino playing Mastodon and that was great. I could feel her difficult cause I didn't know the song as well. This 30s to Mars is pretty obvious
I come back to this one again and again. I have zero musical talent or ability, but watching someone with this level of skill and artistry is just inspiring.
I love the moment in 3:55 cause he tones it down, then for *literally a split second* he hears the volume swell and know there's a big hit coming. That's musicianship and experience right there.
First time I watched this I got fully body chills when he nailed it at this part. This is probably my 10th watch. His artistry never ceases to amaze me.
Its would be great if you extended each of these to a 3 song thing, getting more challenging and away from their normal playing each song. I know you did 2 with domino but they were both jst 4/4 rock songs. Lets make it more about what they would have played on a session for that song thatn trying to guess what the original drum track is. I actually suprised and pro drummers thy are so worried about getiing it "right" i'd rather hear what thier personality would have brought to the song.
@@thechrisandphaedrusshow Not hard to pick up any song, there's tons of streamers who hear the first parts of songs and jam to them no matter what band
I love how he comments about figuring out the time signature…then just before the chorus kicks in, you see him get giddy like the challenge was to reconstruct the drums, and he just figured it out. He was waiting for the chorus to kick in to confirm he was right…and he was, so he took off.
Listens to a song he’s never heard before for a couple seconds* Realizes the tempo* Gives an outstanding performance almost identical to the original* What a legend.
He's absolutely heard this song before lol. He knew exactly when all the tempo and energy changes were coming. I could believe that he's never practiced the song before, but he's obviously familiar with it.
@@theKashConnoisseur or, wierd thought, I know, he's Just a really good musician who understands that stuff inherently. If you believe it or not, Most music follows patterns. (And He was acting in the end to make it believable, I guess?)
I love seeing a true musician respond this way because I feel like they truly understand how insane this is...like at 3:57 ...it's obvious he's learning on the fly and just has that unwritten understanding that musicians have. Which the smiles that come from the booth also reaffirm!!
If you believe that. I'm not into this kind of music at ALL and know this song. He's in the rock world. He knew it was Jared Letos band when they said 30 Seconds to Mars. Plus it's based on the "honestly system". Maybe he was familiar with the song, but said to himself, "fuck it, I don't REALLY know this song... let's give it a go". Who knows. That was scary accurate though to how the drums are.
Almost all drummers that participate in this series hears the whole song first, and then play along remembering what they heard. This guy hears the song for the first time, identify the tempo, and in the chorus he's playing along. What a master!
Basic pop song structure and feeling the “1”. Not so much a testament to chad as it is a comment on how popular music is composed. That being said, chad is a beast.
I noticed it too!!! He’s been touring almost longer than I’ve been alive. So of course it shouldn’t be a shocker; but wow it’s always amazing to see a pro do their thing!
It's actually a really good idea. A whole album of drum covers, even if they've heard it, just to hear what they would do with it. Make it for charity or something.
It's rock n roll, just in 3/4. The tropes of how to do it are pretty well known, and if you listen to a song there's cues in the other instruments and singing to feel where you're headed.
Chads ability to predict what is coming is insane, it goes beyond just recognizing the time signature it is almost like he can read the emotions of the song. He rides the waves of the song real well.
That comes from a lot of learning from playing with people - its always very interesting because you can see how people learnt growing up from the way they read the music. To be fair the song is somewhat _predictable_ ish in that the builds and falls are obvious, but he bloody nailed it
I can ateste to this. I do consulting on mixes and yes that is a thing we can recognize how each musician performs and their strong suits👍🙏 it can get emotional at times which is wild
I think this maybe is less impressive that it appears. When he is joking around calling it “some emo band” or saying he “feels violated” it’s probably because this a very typical(of genre) type music. It has some standard breakdowns and builds and basic song structure. It’s easy to predict where changes will come, it’s telegraphed very well and this song doesn’t really do any thing unexpected. He also goes in to hard on some Of the soft parts and quickly adjusts. All to say, he’s jamming, and that’s something very many musicians are very good at, even ones that aren’t professionals. But, when you get someone with this level of technicality and musicianship doing it sounds pretty great.
@@GregavisionNot to be an argumentative tool, but what about this song is unconventional? At first listen, to me sounds super formulaic. I could easily see how he could roll with it (still a great musician, don't get me wrong). V1 C1 V2 C2 B1/B2 2 bars turnaround Double chorus on the way out Thoughts?
It doesn't matter the discipline: special forces, combat fighter pilot, 50-year-old luthier - you can always tell when you're in the midst of a master. That was really awesome. Thanks.
8 Months later and I still randomly come back and rewatch this. Just randomly starts 40 seconds into the song and absolutely murders it. Like if someone who didn't know Chad they'd just assume "oh thats the drummer from 30 Seconds to Mars doing a live play through of the kill".
Do u want another pass? “No, no, fuck no I nailed that….I feel violated!” Then goes and play along with the original knowing what the guys was going to play next chads version was better
That’s because he can count if u can count the recognized tempo u will know what to play.this is a skill as a drummer that u cant teach tho it takes experience and hella of listening to different music and tempos to be able to pick up shit like this first try but first try in 30sec is insane skill
@@SamiDaComposer you still won't know the structure of the song and energy of certain parts , yet he seems to nail both pretty much perfect (well except for that ending bit there XD) better than a lot of drummers in this series who did listen to the song first.
It is emotionally moving, to watch a MASTER musician play a piece of music he has never heard and make it sound like he wrote the song and has been playing it 14 years. Amazing!
As a musician, this is so gratifying. You can hear his thought process. He's anticipating some musical things that do happen (and some he expected but doesn't). Every section he pulls back slightly to listen, then moves decisively. That's really the biggest takeaway for me- how quickly he listens and adjusts. He anticipated the repeated elements and just went for it with 100% confidence. This is a masterclass on responsive playing.
3:10 perfectly illustrates this. He's like "hmm alright I guess I'm playing like this now." 3:20, 3:37, 3:41, 3:52 A single beat where he notices the shift and quickly makes the transition.
I point to the Megadeth drummer performing Mr. Brightside without hearing it as a bit of a contrast to this performance here. While he does a good job, it doesn't sound nearly as close to the original drums.
Art. Moving art. Emotionally inspiring art. It was a powerful song, and Chad absolutely nailed it just jamming to what he anticipated. And the way he pivoted so quickly when things were a little different from what he expected... damn. I teared up a little at one small example of the beauty of this world.
3:56 is the most impressive part of the whole video. He's about to start his crescendo, immediately realizes his mistake since there's a break after the bridge, and makes the correction. Amazing how fast you can watch his brain work through this in real time.
I love how usually drumeo highlights the importance of 'active listening' as drummers hear the song for the first time and then go for a first pass, but Chad Smith being an absolute Chad goes 30 seconds in and practically nails the song, even anticipating the drop! No wonder he's such a prolific studio drummer outside of his work with RHCP, what a masterclass in drumming.
It’s a testament not only to his skills as a drummer, but how comfortable he is with off timings and non-intuitive structure. Makes sense, given the weird shit he deals with playing in RHCP. This is right up his alley. Only major difference between this and RHCP is a lack of California references.

Chad has *absolutely* heard this song before... that's why he caveated his statement at the beginning about "or it's not in the drummer's playstyle". Obviously still an awesome performance, but I don't buy for a second that he hasn't heard this song before.

@@TheRyepoogExactly. I get the argument that Chad has heard the song before, and there may be a subconscious level of recognition thing going on... But at a base level, music is math. Whether he's (or any musician is) actively thinking of it in those terms on purpose or not, after being in the industry as long as he has, he's going to recognize what "works" within the genre he's listening to. It's an ear for both the "sound" and the "numbers" at an incredible level.
As highly rated as Chad is I still actually think he gets slightly underrated in the drumming community as to how absolutely god tier he is behind the kit - this was super impressive
I think it's because of how simply he plays in RHCP. But I think that's part of what makes him so good, he plays what the music needs instead of needing to show case his chops and technical ability all the time
Shows how insane he is!!! He doesn’t listen through the hole song because that’s how much of a live performer and jammer he is. He just picks up the beat and structure subconsciously and adapts to lift the other musicians. Absolute legend!!!
Usually, the guest listens to the whole song first, maybe even makes some notes. Chad pretty much nails it on the first listen. What an incredible musician!
similar thing happened with Jonathon "Sugarfoot" Moffat when they had him do this, few seconds in, just starts playing to the track without a first listen through
Lots of people praise Chad's "instincts" but don't realize how long it takes to develop that feel and knowledge base. Lots of respect for a musician that really knows what he's doing.
It's the purest skill there is. He has the actual ability to create music where none exists, on the fly, and have it suit the song perfectly apparently lol.@@smeetsnoud1

That's the best one yet. Completely immersed in the song, doesn't give a s*** about his image or reputation - open to making mistakes, but the mistakes are not mistakes. He was completely in that song and made it amazing - that's what a true player he is. Lovely to listen to - such a master
100% agree, this is the best one of this series that I have seen, I was totally blown away. Maybe I shouldn't be shocked that a professional musician would be so intuitive, but I didn't expect him to nail it *that* closely without even a first listen to the track.
I love the look in his eyes, just completely and utterly lost in what he's doing. What a wonderful human being. Also, Paiste 2002s are bloody gorgeous!
Genuinely mindblowing. I know he said he "overplayed it" but to me his drumming felt spot-on for pretty much 95% of the song. At some parts I feel like I even enhanced the original.
For me hes right, he overplayed it, he knows when is a clean drumming, one must remember hes the professional here too, he knows what hes talking about.
@@AlbertWesker_GOATlmao it’s not a “listen to the professionals” type of thing here, it’s completely subjective. If op feels like the more aggressive drumming enhanced the song for them why should they act like they don’t like it just cause a professional said so?
Same, love this song and original performance, but was grinning ear to ear seeing him hear it for the first time and be able to play like that. I get people have preference and subjective style (clean/aggressive), I'm not a drummer so idk - but the fact the style wasn't even in Chad's typical zone, but he just jumped in like a boss and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing and thought it was awesome! I feel lucky to have seen both bands live. :)
This is probably the best edition of this show I've seen thus far. Chad is a BEAST. Don't think I've ever seen a drummer break a stick in HALF like that before. That was an AMAZING take.
Anybody else just sit there smiling the whole time watching this with an occasional giggle. Shit makes me feel good bro! This is like my third time coming back to this and believe I probably will many more times in my life.
This is honestly probably one of the most impressive musical performances of all time and I wish more people knew about it. The way he just improvised and adapted to everything and played it near perfectly is just astonishing.

It is like magic to me. That is what makes music so special for so many is that, there is no understanding where this comes from. What a magic moment and gigantic talent.
Chad Smith is a great drummer, no doubt, but what he's showcasing here is decades of experience. Once you get to a certain point with any instrument it just flows, there's no thinking to do, once you know time signature and/or key you can play whatever you want within those bounds. Drums are a second language for him and he speaks fluently.
you've really gotta appreciate the different approaches - so many other guests agonize and drill down to get a perfect take, while chad just goes off on instinct, breaks a stick, fumbles around in the dark, adjusts on the fly, and still delivers just as captivating of a performance in the end - excellent lesson for many drummers, including myself
This was so epic. You can feel how courageously and masterfully he, ventured deeper into the unknown, fully immerse, fully alive; his skill, instinct, experience, and intuition, transformed into a powerful experience.
So impressive to see 3:40. After the climactic “scream” of the song it could have easily gone straight into a final, bombastic rendition of the chorus, which he played for one measure before he realized it was actually a quiet build-up section. You can see him adapt to it by the next measure, playing more quietly, letting off the cymbals to focus on the toms. Unbelievable musicianship backed up by decades of experience.
The song starts playing at 1.19 and he first starts drumming at 1.53. He listened to the song for 34 seconds before improvising until 5.04 (3 mins 11 secs). He heard 15.11% of a song he had never heard before then followed the entire song. Incredible!
I'd submit for arguments sake that he technically starts playing the high hat 30 seconds into the song...30 seconds to start playing 30 seconds to Mars.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe Chad Smith as an amazing and fresh drummer. Do you even know who Chad Smith is and what bands he has played with over the last nearly 40 years? Just watch Domino playing Mastodon and that was great. I could feel her difficult cause I didn't know the song as well. This 30s to Mars is pretty obvious

Many years of practice and jamming. Popular music styles are structured around certain patterns.
His ability to anticipate what's coming next and then instantly adapt is impressive. Love Chad Smith.

The united states military is using technology and manpower to protect deviant sadistic Child SAers that are misusing their access to advanced tools to spy on, harass, and forcibly SA children. This sometimes follows them into adulthood. Children that are still too young to know that what they are seeing is not normal are being exposed to disgusting deviant content that is forcibly shown to them by hacking their devices. Many victims may not even know they have been targeted by this, because the majority of the actual SA happens when they are slipped something that incapacitates them or they are asleep, the only reason they might know is because the perpetrator may leave behind physical evidence, like bruises, scratches, or bodily fluids. If a victim discovers what has happened to them these worms will misuse equipment and manpower to stalk, shame, mock, and generally try to make the lives of the people affected by this as hellish as possible both offline and online. They follow victims in person and try to intimidate or harass them. They generally use different people who act as though they aren't affiliated with each other and don't do anything they can be arrested for at the time of the harassment. They think they can shame and mock their victims into silence because some of what happens is coerced. These are depraved cowards that gather in groups to harass solitary women and children just to protect deviant SAers. They harass the victims to try to instigate a violent reaction that they can be locked up for. This is a strategy they have used for decades against enemies in different contexts, only the child SAers use it to try to get rid of victims using advanced military technology like weaponized AI
I mean this vid was posted 2 days ago and it’s trending, so yea I think people know about it. Insane performance and deserves to blow up
@@yeskiii It was just a long winded way of the original commenter to say "first"
His reaction to the bridge change in the kill was incredible. Suddenly realizing in an instant like "shit, this bridge ain't slowin down" and continuing to nail it perfectly. Hilarious and amazing adaptability. Watching talented talented musicians blows my mind.
I like his version better. Reminds me of Mars Volta
@@mindcrome💯 agree his version hits harder
I love that cut back to you guys in the control room and the realisation that he’s absolutely nailing it. 😅
Literally my jaw DROPPED. Even a total non musician like me can see the absolute genius here….what an artist!!
x2
It is like magic to me. That is what makes music so special for so many is that, there is no understanding where this comes from. What a magic moment and gigantic talent.
I saw the thumbnail and thought it was Will Ferrell. Who else?
Edit: Thanks for all the likes!
@@holdmyweight3597 I think it's Jimmy Fallon's show where Will Ferrell and Chad Smith have a drum off
I love how instinctive drumming is for him, he just knows. Looks like he had a blast doing the drumthrough too, it was really contagious.
and he needed exactly 30 seconds to start! Check the clock, is true
Everything this man does has this infectious energy. Dude's just exuding good time vibes
He’d definitely heard this before, his smile after hearing 2 seconds gave it away. Zero confusion.
Still class.
To be honest, this isn't really that impressive. The song is just a copy of the standard template.
you've really gotta appreciate the different approaches - so many other guests agonize and drill down to get a perfect take, while chad just goes off on instinct, breaks a stick, fumbles around in the dark, adjusts on the fly, and still delivers just as captivating of a performance in the end - excellent lesson for many drummers, including myself
Best comment so far
Completely agree
🎯🎯🎯 so freaking cool to watch. The talent is unreal
💯
he should have kept the beat going at 3:40
The song starts playing at 1.19 and he first starts drumming at 1.53. He listened to the song for 34 seconds before improvising until 5.04 (3 mins 11 secs). He heard 15.11% of a song he had never heard before then followed the entire song. Incredible!
I like the breakdown
i hope u have a job using numbers.
I'd submit for arguments sake that he technically starts playing the high hat 30 seconds into the song...30 seconds to start playing 30 seconds to Mars.
@@infowazz That's why he's username is jay62418 :)
@@vincemedak9734you can tell that’s when he starts really feeling it
PLEASE more of this WITH him. HE IS AMAZING AND FRESH.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe Chad Smith as an amazing and fresh drummer.
Do you even know who Chad Smith is and what bands he has played with over the last nearly 40 years?
Please, do yourself a giant favor and do an internet search of Chad Smith Drummer. While you are doing that, when you finish picking your jaw off the floor, look up Danny Carey Drummer and then take some time to watch some videos of both of those drummers playing in the bands that they helped become a couple of the greatest bands playing some of the greatest music from the last 40 years.
@@13_13k dude, chill
@@cassianor697 --- Chill?
Did I do something wrong? Are you offended or did you get scared? Hahahahaha
It's okay, you're gonna be fine. So will anyone else who may read my reply to the OP's comment. But, I know how sensitive people are nowadays. You might want to check yourself into some safeplace facility. And definitely stop reading YT comments. You've obviously been through something very traumatic?
Get some help before it's too late.
@@13_13kThis is such good copypasta material
@@13_13k bro chill, you're the sensitive one, commenting like that, guns blazing everywhere. It kinda makes you a gatekeeper. IT'S OK THAT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW EVERY BAND OUT THERE. You didn't know them at some point too. Do yourself a favor and breathe in and out a few times before commenting whatever it is, and be glad they're still relevant to this day and there's still someone giving them exposure. You'd be surprised at the amount of artists you still don't know and will never know.
Never said this about any drummer: I love his drumming. Just clicks right in great job workout. inventiveness
This was the most organic and natural play along ever. Miss steps and mistake pushed into forms and fitments that work with the feel of the music just like if he was onstage. You don’t learn that overnight you play your ass off for years heart on your sleeve and master the craft until you can push through anything and make it sound good. Chads a legend and always will be
🏆
Will Farrell is an amazing drummer.
Chad might have been the best of this series I have seen. He is right there with Larnell
Larnell is a legend but Chad is the only one so far who didn’t listen to the entire song first and take notes. It sets him apart
@@bone_throwerthis is scary impressive. Not a musician but hope to get into drums one day.

18 million views... Not even surprised. I've come back to watch it like 10 times, myself, in the past year. Total Goat. Fight me.
😉💞
we the people demand this channel bring this man back and have him do more improvs on songs he hasn't heard. Everytime The Kill starts playing on my playlist, i stop it so i can come to this video and listen to this version instead.
I just did this just now. That's why I came here agaib lol 😂
same, wheb I wanna hear that song, I come watch thus video now😅
yes literally agree 100%!!! now everytime i listen to this song i feel so much joy from knowing this video, & stop to come watch it. which is why im back here again haha
i would LOVE to see him doing more songs on this channel.
Id love to have this over the original
That’s what I just did 😂 I’ll tell my kids this is the original version
4:23 He freaking broke his drum stick and didn't care, continue with a bang ! That man is a F legend
I didn't even notice
Not the first stick he's broken lol
I love this rendition but i do have to add that most drummers carry a spare stick, its honestly more common than you would think. The part that makes it amazing is that a stick break in a planned song is usually not hard, he had about two beats to make the break sound normal in a brand new song to him
...right when the "brake me down" line dropped :)
Drummer here. Used to burn through sticks like butter in our shows, but that’s totally my fault too
I come back every week or so to see the brilliance of Chad Smith absolutely KILLING this one take
Me too. My favorite moment is 7:11 perfect timing! Goosebumps thats for sure!
Chad Smith is an animal!
samsies
I have ZERO rhythm so any drummer amazes me and they have all done a good job here, but damn Chad's speed at picking up the track is god damn incredible.
same! can't stop watching this
This is so incredible to watch. So talented, so pure. We are lucky to experience this level of skill.
