Replacing My Old Fiberglass Bathtub With an American Standard Passage Alcove Tub - Thrift Diving

  • In this video, for Bathroom Week which was last week (sorry for the delay in posting!), I am showing you how my fiberglass shower and bathtub in my kids' bathroom was removed and replaced with an American Standard Passage Alcove Wall System, which American Standard sponsored for this video. In a previous video, I showed you how to paint or refinish your bathtub. However, refinishing isn't an option for every bathroom. Replacing your bathtub and shower surround is sometimes preferred. If you're looking for an updated, more modern look for your bathroom without spending a lot of money, the Passage Shower collection is an option. See my kids' bathroom "BEFORE" and "AFTER"! #sponsored #thriftdiving #myamericanstandardjourney #americanstandard #homedepot @americanstandard01

    I have to admit I am so shocked to see a woman doing all this. I think it's great! I'm a woman with a career in medicine but I've wanted to learn carpentry since I was a teenager. When my work schedule calms down I can't wait to start taking carpentry classes. I'm a fan of your work. Thanks for sharing your skills and your journey to prove that women (and even moms) can do this stuff!

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Have you considered volunteering with Habitat for Humanity? I know your schedule is hectic, but if you can spare 1 day, you can sign up to volunteer and learn some hands-on carpentry skills! I am in a carpentry program but wanted to be a part of a job site. I just did Habitat a few days ago and OMG....it was soooooo cool! And very rewarding to know that someone who deserves the home will be getting it in 6 months or so when it's done! :) Good luck in fulfilling your carpentry dreams! I can attest that it's addicting! :)

    This was an interesting watch. I loved learning about a different option of replacing a tub/shower, but I have to say, I'm not quite sure that the panels selected can be termed modern. They still seem dated for some reason...Their work was neat though and it was very nice of them to go the extra mile!!! Great customer service!!!

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You've got a good point, Tiarra. It feels more modern compared to what I had, but when compared to other products out there, this may not have been what I would have picked for myself if I had gone to a store and had a choice of various materials and brands. I think it's an economical option for people that want to replace their tub, but I do agree that some of their wall surround options could be improved a bit.

    Unfortunately nothing that was done was waterproofed correctly, Sorry to tell you that you will have issues with rot and possibly many more issues in the coming years. The area right next to the tub that yall installed tile will be very susceptible since that is where most of the water that comes out of the tub will be in contact with.

  • @antiquesrestoration3874

    How come they didn't just have the wall panels go all the way to the ceiling?

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That's a good point. It would make sense that they should. Maybe even make the panels tall and let people trim them to the size they need. Hopefully, American Standard sees this comment and takes it into consideration for their future manufacturing practices!

    • @MrRondonmon

      Probably because someone bought that and sent it back, so that's what they had. They most certainly have 32-inch tubs, LOL, and 33-inch tubs. The contractor had to put out extra work all because they sent a 32-inch tub.

It is because my family's home were I grew up in Canada had that stamped on the bathroom fixtures and I carried on the tradition. 😊 My parents never replaced the original green (not avocado) fixtures, they lasted until the house was bulldozed for a duplex. You have given me HOPE to actually get mine GONE! It looks SO nice!! May I ask how wide your bathroom doorway is and did they have trouble getting it in? Mine is the smallest doorway in my house and my hubby and I were thinking they couldn’t get a new tub through it! My tub was not properly packed with sand under it (the practice 20+ years ago) and it eventually got a stress split in it. We have patched and painted and used rubber paint and waterproof tape and it looks AWFUL! I am so envious of your pretty tub! :)

      Sorry to hear your tub is split! My doorway is standard, probably 36"? I'll have to measure! This was a much smaller tub than I expected, at 30" wide. For some reason, I thought tubs were massive things that would take a lot to get in! LOL. I'll take a measurement and let you know. But they didn't have any trouble getting it up the stairs or moving it in. I'll also let you know how much installation was, too. I know for them to come back and fix the flooring it was $500. But the installation costs, I'm not sure on that yet. I'm waiting to find out! :)

      I put in an American Standard acrylic tub with a curved front, found it at Lowe's and not sure if Home Depot also has it. My bathroom door is only 30 inches wide so had to stand it on end but no problem getting it through the door even with wider curved part. The reason I got that tub is because a lot of the new new tubs aren't as wide as the older ones and in my 60's now it's harder to get down and up in a narrow space. I love the tub but don't care for the surround that was sold separately to go with it. I love these Passage panels though and am going to look into them... even though I just recaulked the tub twice, not liking the result the first time!!

      Robin Rummel I got one in my bathroom with the door off & my bathroom door is 28” wide, it’s the smallest door in my house.

      HAHA, I know, right! It felt nice, yet weird, letting someone else do all the work while I watched and filmed! But part of me was thinking, "I could get used to just sitting back and learning..." LOL

    I bought an acrylic tub about six years ago, thinking it would last longer than a steel tub. Now it is cracking. I am so mad!

      Acrylic tubs may come in standard and thicker varieties. The thicker material is better.

    I have an old dresser that's been painted a bunch, what's the safest way to remove the paint without damaging the wood underneath. It's a really beautiful dresser but I think I want to refinish it

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Peyton! You could use a chemical stripper to remove the layers of paint. It won't damage the wood underneath. But you need to make sure you're doing this outside where it's well ventilated. Use Citristrip. You can check this blog post on stripping furniture: thriftdiving.com/how-to-strip-furniture/

    They did a great job! Don't much like that dark grey, though. I'd have gone with solid white, to compliment your walls and fixtures.

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish I could have. They actually didn't have solid white. I just let the kids pick out which one they wanted, since they were going to be using it! LOL
