      @@TheCGEssentials Hello I have a question. So, I had some problems with the extrude tool when I was making the "Complex Hip Roof." So I used the knife tool like you said to make the base for the extrusion, but after I extruded that face it didn't go in a straight direction. I don't know how to explain this, but the face didn't extrude like yours did. It went along the y axis, but it also went upwards. Is there any way to fix this?

    I've searched through several tutorials and you are absolutely the best instructor. There are several others who are helpful and I like their style, but there is something about how you step me through the process in a way that I am able to understand why it makes sense, whereas others either go too fast or add distracting conversation. Another thing you do that is different is that you help me remember the steps by using them over and over on variations of the same build. That way I have to look for the controls several times in the same tutorial. That helps me remember better. Thank you for helping me break through a learning barrier that I had developed.

    Also, use Edge Offset (in a certain add-on like Mesh Tools or something) and it allows you to take your ceiling, Edge offset, and get equidistant overhanging eave lines instantly. it's like an "outset" tool, instead of inset.

    How do you do it if you want the roof to be a separate object?

    • @andrewrichard3490
      @andrewrichard3490 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just click off the house in "object mode" until nothing is selected (outlined in orange or yellow). Add the roof, (shift+A), then and you'll see it's a separate object with its own name in the outliner.

    Yeah that's all nice (and basic). I need such a roof on a donut shaped building ;) So what I need is to Shift+A, add a Cylinder, then another, one set inside the other to create a donut. Then put a roof on that! So the roof goes from inner circle to outer circle with a hole in the middle ! ;)

  • @g.k.4063
    @g.k.4063 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very well explained and I like the different approaches. Just one question why I came across this video is that I'm struggling with topology and wanted to find out how others tackle it. As far as I can see is that you ignore triangles and n-gons in the last example of the complex shaped roof. Don't you? I did it the same way and worried about topology.

    • @TheCGEssentials
      @TheCGEssentials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends. For most simple architectural applications where I can UV map just from a straight on view, I don't worry about it too much, but if I want to use some more advanced things, like inserting edge loops, etc, I pay more attention. Just depends on what I'm going to do

  • @superviewer
    @superviewer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting examples. I'm a noob in 3D. I've worked a lot in Adobe Illustrator so that's my logic. What I'd love to see is a way to do these models precise, like with a transform palet or something. Can you do that in Blender?

    • @TheCGEssentials

    How do you control your extrude??

    • @andrewrichard3490
      @andrewrichard3490 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can type a value for precision. I use keyboard shortcuts, so I just would type: "e, x, 5," to extrude the selected item 5 units. But typing a value works with tools as well.
