HUGE correction: The X+A sweep is one of the most useful tools in your arsenal. Apart from the obvious-but-niche role of hitting monsters that sidestep but don't give you time to charge and immediately backswing, it gives you hyperarmour not just for its own animation but for the REST OF YOUR COMBO. Almost nobody in the anglosphere seems to know about this, but X+A A A (or X+A A X or X+A X A or X+A X X) has hyperarmour (meaning you cannot be tripped) for the ENTIRE combo. Don't take felyne feet and get yourself killed while still having your attacks constantly interrupted with microflinches. It works in World, too, so don't bother with flinch free, either. Also a minor addition: You can use the aerial finisher before you actually leave the ground if you hit X fast enough after forward+B. This allows you to mount at will with much less commitment (and therefore risk) to your aerial attacks than using them normally, provided the monster has a mounting hitzone that's low to the ground (like zinogre's chest or, conveniently, most monsters' heads).
Hi and thank you for the tips. I have not tried the lance at the moment but I will (and that's why I am here :D ). Yet in the video, at 3:17, it says that you can use the X+A attack at any time in the combo but you cannot combo from it. So how are you able to obtain "hyperarmour not just for its own animation but for the REST OF YOUR COMBO" if there is no combo possible after ?
@@MXBurner that's simply incorrect or possibly badly-worded information. You can follow the XA sweep with X or A, but not with another XA (you can't just sweep over and over). One thing I didn't mention that starts getting into the advanced levels of the weapon, which is very easy to overlook, is that while the ordinary forward thrust charge finisher and backswipe charge finisher both combo into mid or high thrust 1, the aerial finisher combos into thrust 2, skipping 1. This will probably seem like a negative to a beginner (since there is no clear indication that thrust 3 does extra damage), but combined with the grounded aerial finisher I mentioned, it means any time you have a chance to hit a monster with a finisher and two pokes but not a finisher and three pokes, your best damage will come from cancsling the jump on that aerial finisher.
From a hunter's eyes, evasion lancing must be quite advanced and useful. From the monsters end though, they look at evasion lancing as trolling to the extreme.
+Pulse (Pulsicron) Same here, when i was new to the game, i used the LS most but could not kill the end game Ukanlos. Made a lance, killed it on first try.
Thanks! In reality, all 14 are that good! It was my hope to present them in a way that makes people interested in trying them so your comment makes me very happy :)
gaijin hunter That's what I love about this game, so much variety! I mean sure there are popular weapons like the Longsword, or the unpopular ones like the Hunting Horn (my personal second favorite weapon), but they are all fantastic in their own ways! That being said, I forgot to ask, how come your lance in the beginning of the video has like a glowy red shine to it? Is that part of the weapon or is that something different entirely?
One thing you forgot to mention: The Lance does its own type of damage called Piercing damage. With piercing damage, the game calculates which type of damage (cutting or impact) would do the most damage on that monster part and uses that type of damage.
Not entirely accurate! It's only if the cutting hitzone is (iirc) 72% or less than the impact hitzone, which almost never happens. Been that way since gen 2.
I honestly barely know anything about gen 1, let alone things like how lance damage was calculated. I'm not sure if FU added its special damage mechanic or just nerfed it from being whichever value is highest, either, but I've always heard that FU is the game where it was first the way it is now (with impact being used if cutting is less than 0.72*impact). Lance was definitely in MH1 though, in fact I know it was notoriously good for headlocking certain monsters.
I always feel like Lance masters are the gods of Monster Hunter. This is why. "Big attack? SCREW YOU I'M A GUARD-LANCER I'LL RUN STRAIGHT THROUGH IT!" "Aggressive monster? DON'T CARE, SIDESTEPPING THE RAIN IN A HURRICANE BECAUSE I'M A DODGE-LANCER BOSS!"
Verbose Mode The real reason behind why Lance masters are the gods of MH is how little do they interrupt other hunters. Their attacks are so focused and quick that they cause no disruption whatsoever, unlike other weapons (*AHEM LS AHEM*). They are an excellent choice both for solo and co-op play.
I've noticed the horrid lack of "super armor" during my recent forays into the world of lance. GODAMNIT, LET ME HIT IT! LET ME OUT! LET ME ANYTHING JUST STOP HITTING ME!
Verbose Mode Thats the biggest downside, and why I generally don't lance when theres a bowgun user in the group, especially ones that use spread shot. You can't do anything because they keep shooting you in the back. Still though, you're basically invincible if you know the monsters well enough with a lance.
Verbose Mode i think just like you, in videos they are like gods taking 0 hits moving little, the when i lance is completly different but time will let u master anything
Lance, the often forgotten weapon. It has grade evasion capabilities, the best block in the game, it deals both cutting and impact damage (kinda, its damage usually counts as cutting, but if the body part you're attacking is weaker to impact than to cutting then the Lance's damage will use the impact resistance), its attacks are precise and very non-disruptive to other players (unlike the LS for example that constantly knocks over all its teammates), and after the Insect Glaive it's the second best weapon for mounting, yet barely anybody seems to use it.
Its mostly due to a few things, the main one being that the lances handle much differently than the rest of the arsenal. One of the most immediately apparent points being in how it's dodging works, while you are able to hop backwards you are much less mobile than other heavy weapons like the great sword which has a solid dodge as well as a guard ability. To add to that you don't have many ways to advance quickly without being stuck in a ending attack animation from, so fights like Najarala become difficult because it's tricky to get out of larger danger zones quickly. The guard is very strong but is reliant on your stamina which becomes a big factor in how the fight goes unless you brought dash juices. To get the most out of the lances usability you have to gear yourself up to give yourself the better guard and dodge distance abilities, while lancing without any buffing abilities make the weapon much more awkward and difficult to use, especially in the early game. The lance is at it's hardest when playing solo because all the focus is on you to tank hits and such, however a lot of those shortcomings are remedied in multiplayer when the monster isn't solely focused on attacking you, when that is the case the lance is much more fun because you can focus primarily on offense with the occasional defensive actions.
Dasbubba I think the main reason for people not using Lance is because it's "boring". After all, all you do is poke, poke, poke, hop, poke, poke, poke, hop, etc. No big flashy attacks, no burst damage. In comparison, the Charge Blade, which has quickly become the most used weapon, has the most flashy attacks of all, so big and flashy they make the user's screen shake and and everybody else's fps drop.
The closest the lance has in the way of flashy attacks is the counter and the charge. I would agree with that too, but also just how it handles when you don't know what you're doing can make the lances seem immediately clunky and off putting.
Gaijin got me on using Lance/Switch Axe again. He just covers every weapon so perfectly looking through its downsides and strenghts objectivly. It's awesome for every type of person, either you a veteran and want to get back or know some tricks for a weapon or you a newcomer who's looking for the right weapon for him. Proos to you Gaijin!
I never realized how OP the lance really is, your guides are so awesome! It's made me seen weapons I couldn't get the hang of in a new light, thanks a bunch for this.
Amazing guide and very knowledgeable. 10/10 alot of players need to see ur guides.. And i love how u have not covered some of the most used weapons like LS DS SWAX.. Alot of players already use those weapons 90% of the time.. I like how your content is about getting the player excited and interested in a new weapon not showing them how to use common weps they might already know how to use.. Lance was my first love.. Then hh, then lbg and hbg. PLEASE A BOWGUN TUTORIAL I AM SO CURIOUS ON HOW YOU WILL REPRESENT IT PLEASE!
They [Capcom] should seriously make a lance in Gaijin's honor. His videos are the most insightful in monster hunter and gives anyone with any experience great information into the depth of this game. And I probably would of never touched the Lance if he didn't mention it.
I just start playing MH4U last night. my friends suggest me to start with Lance and i've found it very hard to move and do damage as it very slowwwww so it's quite disappoint. till i found your video today, it's so damn good! Thanks for this video man.
I've been an MH player since the original game on the PS2, and I fell in love with the Lance when I saw a fully decked out Fatalis hunter headlocking a Rathalos. Awesome guide! Thank you for sharing
I bet these guides are eye opening to a lot of newer hunters. I love how intricate each weapon actually is and how powerful they are once you've mastered them. Some of the lesser used attacks are perfect for certain situations and it sets people apart who know how to use them under the right conditions. I really enjoy seeing other very skilled players enjoying the ins and outs of all the weapons and it gives new players many new ideas on how to improve their game-play. Great video Gaijin.
I fully admit to being a new hunter, I main the lance and had no idea I could even pull like 60% of the stuff he just did. I didnt even know about the side hop! I am a full supporter and subscriber to gajin! :3
Yep, this guide has opened my eyes. Even though this is a 4U/4G guide, It doesn't stop me from going main Lance while I play MHFU (Yep, poor guy doesn't have a 3DS to continue xD). I can't counter, I can't back finish a charge, but I can step, thrust, guard and charge... well at least until I get Evade skill for the evade lancing, gotta stick to Guard lancing. :3 I only have difficulties with dealing smaller enemies tho. Yeah, Lance isn't the weapon to face a group of mobs.
I never realized just how much fun it is to back hop all the way across the field with a huge lance, and to skate around as if the ground were ice until I saw this video. Thanks, man.
Those Zinogre fights were absolutely magical. I've only been playin' since 3U, but lance is one of my favorite weapons, and I loved using it in the 4U demo. Between this and the Switchaxe, Imma have me some fun.
I am playing 4U again because of nostalgia and because I got tired of how flashy all the moves got in switch version. The simplicity and chunkiness of 3ds era monster hunter are a charm, I love them. I remember you from back in the day, and I was trying lance (totally new weapon for me) and decide to search your old guides. THank you so much for maming them!! Also, wow, 9years ago? Really? that was fast. I hope everything is alright in your life. Cheers🎉
Thanks for this tutorial, man - as a hunter who jumped into the series starting with MH3U, I've put a lot of time into this game series. However, the vast majority of my time has been playing with the Great Swords, as I am a brute who values raw strength over almost anything else. Seeing as such, in MH4U I decided to pick up a few new weapons and give them a shot once I'd gotten to G crown and had tons of leftover materials. Sword and Shield came almost naturally to me, but I absolutely sucked at Lance and had no idea about its combos and possibilities. Thanks for making this, again, as it's showed me a few tricks I didn't know that have boosted my playing potential by a lot.
"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" sounds pretty accurate, if you're describing an Evade Lancer. It's so much more than just poking, no matter if Guard Lancing or Evade Lancing. Ugh, Monster Hunter, why are all your weapon classes so damn awesome?
+Sand Katze Hey, your question is really the same as my mind tells. How can be all of the weapons are so awesome? Insect Glaive and Charged Blade are the best? Uh, they easy to use, but that doesn't mean the best. Lance here is pretty awesome too.
***** I think there is no such thing as a "best" weapon. I'm currently trying to master all Blademaster weapons and so far, I've had fun with everything I've used (GS, LS, DB, IG, CB, SA, Lance/Gunlance). For me, switching between weapons and crafting lots of them is a huge part of my endgame.
Fully agreed man, to the max. Me too, though I am still only halfway to master all of them XD It is very fun to try different weapon and dig deep with each of them.
Another point I didn't see in the video is that you can counter/guard advance Roars in addition to evading through them. But it was an excellent video! Lance has always been my favorite weapon in MonHun!
Very well done guide, could not have been better done. While not quite a vet I absolutely adore lance, started off with it in Tri (my first MH) and never looked back (well there was that dark GL-only phase when I started 2/3U buuuut...). Evade lancing is super fun and all but I guard lance because otherwise you just have this big badass dead weight on your right arm and it just kinda feels wrong, y'know? CANNOT WAIT FOR FEB >_
I'm a CB user and recently I've been learning how to use it properly and training with the Guard Points. After watching this video I know now I'll be using Lance as my secondary weapon and I'll try to master it as well as the CB.
Man you're epic. I've learn to play with every weapon because of you man and your comments are also very entertaining. At first I thought it would be a bit harder to take full advantage of the video since I'd have to be reading subs, but it really doesn't affect it at all. Nice videos and you earned yourself a sub!
When i used Lance build in MH2ndG, my friends always happy and glad. Like i'm the only one who can tank Silver Rathalos or Golden Rathian fireball in front while they're using items. And i can spam between them legs to make'em falls frequently, lol And yes, minimalized friendly fire attack
You! Yes, you, Gaijinhunter! You are the reason im not getting higher than G2, cause i have to try out all those weapons instead of staying loyal to one or two of them. But your Tutorials make them all look so awesome...darn it!
I love the lance because is the only weapon that makes me feel like I am having a real 1 on 1 duel with the monster, and I wouldn't change that for (even) more movility or damage.
Something I don't see people often bring up when talking about the usefulness of lance in group play is the sideswipe. Sure, it's slower and less efficient to use than a forward or up poke (not by much, really), but many don't realize that it grants you super armor (meaning you won't trip) for the rest of your combo when you use it. Very useful when you find yourself surrounded by LS/CB/DB/etc users online.
Bizarrely I managed to make a set that can either guard or us evasion at just high rank. It doesn't have evade dist+ and only has evasion +2, but combining gravios and hermitar armors with a few simple gems and a simple talisman has given me Guard +2, Evasion +2, and Defense Up (S) Obviously I'm gonna tweak the set when I actually can get some armors and talismans that offer better skills. It looks like I could go for evasion +3 at the expensive of Guard (down to +1, which still isn't bad, can still block some hits). How useful is evasion +3 vs evasion +2?
Eva+2 is a .4 sec invincibility period, or 12 i-frames. Standard i-frames with no evasion skill is 6, or .2 seconds. So you double them with eva+2. Evasion+3 adds another 6 i-frames to make 18 total, or .6 seconds (huge invincibility period!). The thing about eva+3 is, the i-frames last EXACTLY the length of a Lance hop, which you can chain together (up to 3). Which means you can be invincible for 56 frames (1.8 seconds). So ya, eva+2 is powerful, but +3 combined with Lance is arguably the single most powerful skill in the game.
you all prolly dont care at all but does someone know of a method to get back into an Instagram account..? I somehow forgot my login password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
@Jaiden Marcellus I really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
A couple of things I'd like to note as well about the Lance regarding guards and stamina. When guarding against attacks with your shield, you will use up stamina. But even attacks that empty the stamina bar will not go through it (assuming you have the proper armor skills, of course). If you try to guard against a second attack while drained, however, you won't be protected and will take damage. Stamina does not regenerate while standing still and guarding. However, moving forward while guarding (R + Move) DOES allow stamina to regenerate throughout your movement. Note that this is different from the Shield Advance (R + Move + X) that allows you to plow through attacks quickly at the cost of some stamina. One gives it back without compromising your guard; the other takes it away to quickly and safely close distances between you and the monster. Hope this helps ^^ LH
Dear sir gaijinhunter aka aevanko, I was in really bad need of lance tutorial and this video helped me a lot. I've never liked lance in previous MH series, now i want to try every weapon even the most incompatible for me. One of them is lance. When i saw this video, i realized just how amazing the lancer can be. The way you played this type of weapon inspired me :) Thanks a lot.
As a Lancer since MHFU i find your guide have very good coverage and useful for both beginners and experienced one alike. I am mainly Guard Lancer but do respect the merit of evade lancing though i wouldn't recommend Evade distance since it messes up your positioning which is crucial for Lance.
LoL my browser went to the gunlance but I was commenting on this video intintionally. You inspired me to use this weapon. I don't see many lancers and all the possibilities and the defence is amazing. Hope I can master it like you Gaijin hunter! Subscriber Right here
This tutorial helped me a lot. The Lance is one of the weapons which don't play like most melee weapons (Swords, Axe etc). The evading was quite difficult at first, I disliked shields first as well, before watching your video :p
Awesome guides :) I've always used the lance since Monster Hunter Tri and was not all that great until I found your videos after MH4U came out. Now I'm in 4* caravan quests with Guard +1 and surviving a lot easier. Well so far at least lol
"Normally I'd be more aggro but i want to show off each move in practice" WHAT?! i thought you we're going full aggro. It seems im a noob when it comes to attacking.
its also that lancing is one of the most aggro weapons. i've lance for a long time (since the OG MH on ps2) and the general flow is thrust, thrust, thrust, dodge repeat. infinitly. my friend watched me cuz he was curious about my DPS in 3u and he counted a total of 87 hits in a minute vs a duramboros.
This tutorials are sooo good. I wish I had someone to play in MH3U in my 3DS and in this one we have online, so I will finally be able to look deeper into other weapons and stuff. Also, I would like to know if you could make a Switch Axe guide, it's my main weapon and I have more than 1000 kills with it, to know if something has been improved or changed. Thank you again for these awesome guides.
Does that Super Back Hop apply to Gunlance Too? I wanna Believe they do since they both are Similar in that regard and I have seen Evasion Gunlance Done before.
I have a cheap Lance trick. First, mount & topple the large monster. Then, quickly move into position almost like a capital T where the top horizontal line is the flailing monster, and the vertical line is you with the Lance facing towards it. Face perfectly straight and do the lance charge. (R+X+A) If done right, you should be in a state of constantly damaging the monster while running in place, and you should also hear nothing but PSSH PSSH PSSH PSSH PSSH PSSH(the sound of dealing damage) And you will most likely need to resharpen after doing this constantly.
And then when the monster gets back up if it's not dead and yu still have stamina left over, do the charge jump (Forward+B during charge) then do an aerial attack as it gets up and you will hopefully knock down the monster again, remount, reknockover, rerepeat. Only if you have enough stamina.
Lance is the weapon I am absolutely the worst with. It's because of that that I decided to pick it up next and learn how to use one. The set I made for use with lances has atkXL, guard +2, sharpness+1 and speed sharpen. Is this an Ok set to use with a lance? I figured that attack and sharpness were good for most things, guard for a lance and speed sharpen because I can fit it.
gaijin hunter Thank you for the super fast reply! I've been practicing the things in this video and it's been fun^^ Thanks for posting all of these tutorials. I watch them whenever I pick up a new type of weapon:)
ForestofCicadas Hey! I've been lancing since Monster hunter Freedom Unite. Here's some tips to make the game super easy mode with the lance. 1) auto guard ~ If you get far enough into the single player (not very far at all) you'll get an auto guard amulet. This lets you never have to worry about pressing R to guard and believe me it's amazing, block random wind gusts, roars, etc... Never slow down and stop to shield again with this op amulet! 2) Guard +1 ~ Guard +2 does literally nothing for the lance, however Guard +1 will make you lose no stamina and take no damage from blocks. Guard +2 is only necessary on sns 3) Guard Up ~ You'll really want this. You will never be hit by beams or anything like that again, this is almost more important than guard +1 against some monsters. 4)Evade Dist+ ~ This allows you to move 2x faster with your lance drawn.... How? You are now able to move as fast as somebody running by simply backstepping... Do a couple back hops and your back right on top of the monster. This is a must for any lancer that wants good mobility. 5) Evade +2 ~ After every 3 hits you need to dodge with the lance, coupled with blocking skills you now become almost 100% invincible. Not only will you block everything that comes your way, you can now dodge every single attack and gain invincibility simply by side stepping monster and tail swipes. Attacking the monster hand he goes for a swing? Just side step! It's better than blocking!
+meektheshy Thanks for the advice^^ I'm currently well into G rank so I don't think I'll be using auto guard over my creator talismans, but I'll see if I can get my hands on a set with some of the other skills:) Luckily my friends have been very patient with me and my silly antics trying to learn the lanceXD I can't even tell you how many times I've sent my one friend tumbling with the lance charge, although it might have been a little vengeance for standing right next to me with a pair of DB;)
What better reason to start using a Lance than getting a Blue Crater from a fight with a Pink Rathian (still not sure how I got it btw). This is such a big help. I never would have figured out the Lance was good for mounting!
I am loving the lance now and I would love it so much more if I was at the rank for the armor sets that give guard+. Everything is just too tough for me to progress atm :( (hunter rank 7 if you're wondering.) Great video!
Only thing I didn't know was that you could attack mid-air, which is super useful. I'm always putting it away so I can climb, to mount. Now I don't have to, which is a great help.
I picked up a pretty cool relic lance with edgemaster +5, purp sharpness, +35 def and awakened poison so I decided to learn the lance and build a set round it... Using white fatty, torso up from GX Tempest, barroth and the perfect talisman, i managed to get: Constitution +2 Expert + 1 Edgemaster Guard + 2 Guard up Evasion + 1 So now I essentially bring the lance to every fight and I haven't carted twice since :) Thanks for helping me learn the lance gaijin :D
Man, I never thought about using the lance at all. I knew that the big Idea of it was it's counter attack so I tried using it to counter attack but never got any good at it. Now I see that I can evade lance like that. It sounds more my style since I'm so used to using the great sword.
Lances are without a doubt one of the best weapons in the game. With enough skill, you can more than compensate for the weapon's "lack of speed" and the awesome defensive capabilities mean that so long as you're careful, you'll probably never take a hit. Lances are so broken because of this, but the skill it takes balances. A skill lancer will almost never die, unless they run out of stamina or get staggered at a bad time. Lances for the win!
I finally made it to G-Rank. My focus before G-Rank was to be a Gunner because I always Gunned in G-Rank in previous game. I think it's time I give the Lance a try!
I do both gunning and lancing in G-rank. It gives me a nice contrast between monsters that are annoying to melee (prime example: Kushala) and monsters that are annoying to gun (Rajang with his monstrous damage). I mainly use a Pierce HBG with the Garuga armor set, which is an amazing set for pierce gunning (HG earplugs, Pierce Up, Critical Eye, and 6 points in Recoil? Yes please). For lancing I mainly use the Narga-Kushala-Narga-Kushala-Narga X set which gives me Evasion +3, Evade Extender, and Sharpness +1, along with 1 spare slot. From that I can add in an elemental attack +2 skill of my choice (if I have a +14 element charm with a weapon that has no slots), or some other utility skill. Elemental lancing is extremely strong in MH4U, especially if you're using something obscene like the Kirin lance. For Raw lancing, the Seregios lance is godlike. Alternatively, the Crimson Fatalis lance is a machine at applying Blastblight, so you can look forward to that as well in post-G-rank.
from my running total of about 2000 or so hours from Freedom Unite to 3U, I could never really get myself to like lance, no matter how hard I tried. Though I think I just might this time with 4U. Thanks for sharing.
havent played mh since the psp days and i'm so astounded by all the changes lance receive! but i see that evade lancing is still a thing. :3 the best way to lance, i feel, is to have a hybrid. guard+1 & evade+1 (and guard up if possible). once you get a good feel of the monsters you're facing and the evade timing, evade +1 is more than sufficient. any more is just to minimize your error as a hunter. also, there are certain attacks that are better off guarding than evading. nonetheless, amazing tutorial videos! (though i'm not playing any of the recent mh. T_T)
This video made me so excited to play Lance, I made an armor set for it n_n I'm only in G1 so it isnt great, but I got in Guard +2, Constitution +2, Crit Draw, and Guts. Last thing I want to do is hone my lance for defense, and I'll be satisfied :) feels great to poke a monster to death while shrugging off all his attacks from behind my shield.
I'm not sure, but lance dodges make you immune to dammage ? Feels like the monster should have connected multiple times but didn't :o Thanks a lot for these tutorials, they're jsut pure gem.
A great weapon for SnS mains that want to try something new I say SnS mains because they are the ones that truly understand that great damage isnt everything And because Before Legionaries, there were Hoplites
I hopped on board the MH wagon at Mh3u, so you could say I'm a newbie compared to other players. I do have about 325 hours invested in it though, and I've mained the lance the whole way. I've hardly used any other weapon more than 30 times. I absolutely love the representation you give it, as I feel many disregard it because it feels like a sluggish or passive style of play. I will say that new players should probably not start with evade lancing, especially trying to only use evade+1 with hopes of ditching even that later like I did. It's a HUGE gap going from using evade skills to using the inherent Moment of Invincibility in the back and side hops. I still can't do it. I mainly guard lance though, so I haven't tried it in quite a while. I'm looking forward to picking it back up in mh4u.
You said you weren't being serious, but you hunt on a level higher than most TH-camrs I've watched. That, and your tutorials are excellent: you sold me on the Lance, and I've hated that thing since I started playing! Would you mind showing off the bowguns, and how they're doing in 4th gen? I can't find nearly any good bowgun footage on TH-cam, and I'd really like to hear what changes have been made since 3rd gen.
Thanks! To be honest, bowguns are likely the last weapons I will cover, but I will get to them eventually. Outside the bow and the new type of shot, there hasn't been that many changes to them.
That guard & counter style of play, which I was not fully aware of really, makes me want to use lances over my charge blade now, especially since it can be such a giant pain in the ass to hit monsters in sword mode whereas lance has solid, long reach moves that don't fly all over the damn place.
I like to counter monster when they are roaring keeps the combo alive and also serves as earplug (In a way). For me the Lances charge is the most important attack of the lance , because you know sometimes i need to get out of a corner or out of the area to heal. For me the lance is the solo weapon as it can kill monsters really fast (using evade lance). Also try using stamina recovery with lance helps a lot.
Awesome guide. I decided to take Lance after this ;D. Just a quick question. What Lance and Armor would you recommend with both Evade and Guarding playstyles? 0 .
Thanks for all these tutorials, gaijin. The in game tutorials don't explain it near as well as you do ;) i was trying for figure out the charge for the longest time, and didn't know you actually needed 3 buttons. The game just explains it as a "special attack button" ...which explains nothing...
I'm about to be criticized for the Lance set I run, but I honestly don't care. It's been the best set I've run with it. I wear a straight Gravios X set or armor with a Creator Talisman that buffs Mounting and Sharpener, plus 3 slots. The Lance of choice would be Daora's Regulus. The skills I have activated are Defense Up (XL), Guard +2, Speed Sharpening, Guard Boost, and Mounting Master. I have never had this much fun with a weapon since The Hammer (my personal main).
I don't like to use evade distance up because I like to stick really close to the weakest point of the monster and an extended sidestep can move your out of range of prime damage. As for covering distance when you're away from the monster: constitution is amazing for evade lancing especially if you need to cover distances fast and you don't have evade up. It will take an extra hop but you'll still have more stamina than you did with evade up.
X+A can be chained with X or A. You have to give it an extra half a second or so and then you can hit X or A to go into a forward or upward thrust. I can do [X+A, X, X+A] or [A, X+A, A] or [X+A, X, A]. You cannot however chain X+A after you perform X+A. So for example: [X+A, X+A, X] wouldn't work.
Awesome tutorial my fav. is the hammer else the switch axe but i'll try the lance guard++ seems pretty nice but needs some excersice i guess ^^ hope i can have a new 2nd/3rd fav. weapon now :D
y'know, I finally get why the Lance can mount monsters so easily ; Jousting!. It's silly, but yeah lol Still a GL man myself, but one of my buddies I used to play with will be loving the added mobility this time around!
Subscribed to you, top quality videos. But damn. I always loved lance and recently I swtched to Gunlance to spice things up but comparing Gunlance to this is like the Turtle vs the Rabbit XD
I'm more of a guard lancer given that in Monster Hunter Trip I would commonly use the counter strike especially on Barroth. The lance is a highly strategic weapon and may require some patience to master.
Hey Gaijin, I noticed weapons in the same category will have different lengths. Does that mean the longer/bigger ones will have bigger hitboxes or is it just aethetic (please let it be the former :)
hey gaijin thanks for the tutorial. one quick question, which set can i make at g2 to compliment the lance best? i've made it this far with double gore >_< now ppl are getting mad online
I've been lancing since Mhfu There's a few things i'm trying to learn tho that were added to the lance. For example you can now hop during your charge... However it seems like half the time i try it i just end up stopping. There's also the reflex block which i kinda did in mh3, but I've totally forgotten how to do it. I'm basically just oldschool lancing, but learning these two things would be so nice lol. thx for the video.
Also, I think it'd be really cool if you did a video on evade lancing. Lancing with evade dist+ and evade +2 The idea is that instead of blocking you can just side step and back step every incoming attack. Many players with 1000+ hours do it and is considered one of the most pro strategies in the game.
Wow, thanks for the information!
Can’t believe he’s hearting comment’s posted 4 years after the video released. Most you tubers just ignore new comments on old videos.
@@vitriolicAmaranth Thanks man for answering a year old comment and for the detailled answer ! Appreciated ! 👍
From a hunter's eyes, evasion lancing must be quite advanced and useful. From the monsters end though, they look at evasion lancing as trolling to the extreme.
"We failed because the lancer died too many times," said no one ever.
"Lance? Such a bad, weak weapon. It looks so hard to use."
*Makes one anyway*
*Kills frenzied tigrex first try*
"Forgive me Father for I have sinned."
+Pulse (Pulsicron) My Experience in a nutshell.
I have sinned as well for I have forsaken the lance.
+Pulse (Pulsicron) Same here, when i was new to the game, i used the LS most but could not kill the end game Ukanlos. Made a lance, killed it on first try.
+Pulse (Pulsicron) Lancer is op man XD I aint played much of MH4U, but in MH3U lancer all the way, those really strong monsters you need lancer.
I tried Lance once, it's a good weapon. But i cleared all the quests with DB.
Damn your guides are top notch! You make every weapon look so dang good!
Is that part of the weapon or is that something different entirely?
gaijin hunter Oops sorry! Glowy yellow shine to it!
shloopstigity the hunting horn is awesome
shloopstigity The shine is something you get from honing your weapon.
One thing you forgot to mention: The Lance does its own type of damage called Piercing damage. With piercing damage, the game calculates which type of damage (cutting or impact) would do the most damage on that monster part and uses that type of damage.
Wow, cool.
Damn that’s epic
Not entirely accurate! It's only if the cutting hitzone is (iirc) 72% or less than the impact hitzone, which almost never happens. Been that way since gen 2.
vitriolicAmaranth Was it like this in Gen 1 or was lance not in that game/didn’t have pierce?
I honestly barely know anything about gen 1, let alone things like how lance damage was calculated. I'm not sure if FU added its special damage mechanic or just nerfed it from being whichever value is highest, either, but I've always heard that FU is the game where it was first the way it is now (with impact being used if cutting is less than 0.72*impact).
Lance was definitely in MH1 though, in fact I know it was notoriously good for headlocking certain monsters.
Lancers are the gods of the monster hunter series
I always feel like Lance masters are the gods of Monster Hunter. This is why.
"Big attack? SCREW YOU I'M A GUARD-LANCER I'LL RUN STRAIGHT THROUGH IT!"
"Aggressive monster?
Shmandalf To be fair, a gunner shouldn't be using spread shots in multi anyways
Tried lance with eva+3 a couple of days ago thanks to this. Now is my main weapon. Love you.
I got a medieval times jousting ad before this video. Incredibly fitting.
Yes I'm looking for a Heavy Bow Gun Tutorial!
He's covered all the weapons now. There's no bias.
fullfire55 he literally JUST did hammer
They [Capcom] should seriously make a lance in Gaijin's honor. His videos are the most insightful in monster hunter and gives anyone with any experience great information into the depth of this game. And I probably would of never touched the Lance if he didn't mention it.
I just start playing MH4U last night. my friends suggest me to start with Lance and i've found it very hard to move and do damage as it very slowwwww so it's quite disappoint. till i found your video today, it's so damn good! Thanks for this video man.
Im playing mh4u and im at the very early hr village now, been using lance because it was pretty fun to poke around lol. Thanks for the guide
I only have difficulties with dealing smaller enemies tho. Yeah, Lance isn't the weapon to face a group of mobs.
Xierra Marron Block. Sideswipe. backstep, sideswipe. They're all poisoned or asleep at that point (I like status effects)
This video REALLY makes me want to get into lancing especially with that jump mount, I never even knew that was a thing with lances!
*****
I think there is no such thing as a "best" weapon.
Very Nice lance tutorial! I underestimated how powerful the counter attacks actually are.
How to play as a Daimyo Hermitaur:
1:Pick up Evade lancing
2:Face away from the monster on purpose to advance.
+Harold Rafanan Lol
And i can spam between them legs to make'em falls frequently, lol
And yes, minimalized friendly fire attack
It doesn't have evade dist+ and only has evasion +2, but combining gravios and hermitar armors with a few simple gems and a simple talisman has given me Guard +2, Evasion +2, and Defense Up (S)
Obviously I'm gonna tweak the set when I actually can get some armors and talismans that offer better skills.
@Kason Adrien Instablaster :)
@Jaiden Marcellus I really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Jaiden Marcellus it worked and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my ass!
Hope this helps ^^
LH
I'm learning all the weapons, but this video truely encourage me to try lance. So epic to see. Thanks Gaijin.
"Normally I'd be more aggro but i want to show off each move in practice"
WHAT?! i thought you we're going full aggro.
It seems im a noob when it comes to attacking.
lol, when you get to know the monsters very well and the weapons you can take more chances.
its also that lancing is one of the most aggro weapons. i've lance for a long time (since the OG MH on ps2) and the general flow is thrust, thrust, thrust, dodge repeat. infinitly. my friend watched me cuz he was curious about my DPS in 3u and he counted a total of 87 hits in a minute vs a duramboros.
DragongodZenos Yea, I lance too. Having the ability to dodge/evade and guard any attack it makes you alot more aggressive.
I think it's just that he can just thrust thrust thrust all the way instead of showing the other moves... since you know, he's a genius. :3
Sorry about this but you said we're, as in we are.
I'm a grammar Nazi, It just bugs me.
One thing to also mention about Guard Lancing: You can counterattack roars! No earplugs required! That's my favorite feature of lancing :)
Switch Axe is actually the next guide I had planned ^^
gaijin hunter Is it true there are 2 lance types in this game in terms of length?
Yes there are long lances this time around and they are fuuuuuun
gaijin hunter But do they have longer hitboxes?
LOL! now I'm playing MH3U again till MHX is out... and with a lance :D
When I tried Lance in 3U, I thought it was very lame.
After watching this video, I'm really considering Lance to become a main weapon.
That is a fabulous set!
gaijin hunter Thank you for the super fast reply!
1) auto guard
~ If you get far enough into the single player (not very far at all) you'll get an auto guard amulet. This lets you never have to worry about pressing R to guard and believe me it's amazing, block random wind gusts, roars, etc... Never slow down and stop to shield again with this op amulet!
2) Guard +1
~ Guard +2 does literally nothing for the lance, however Guard +1 will make you lose no stamina and take no damage from blocks. Guard +2 is only necessary on sns
3) Guard Up
~ You'll really want this. You will never be hit by beams or anything like that again, this is almost more important than guard +1 against some monsters.
4)Evade Dist+
~ This allows you to move 2x faster with your lance drawn.... How? You are now able to move as fast as somebody running by simply backstepping... Do a couple back hops and your back right on top of the monster. This is a must for any lancer that wants good mobility.
5) Evade +2
~ After every 3 hits you need to dodge with the lance, coupled with blocking skills you now become almost 100% invincible.
ForestofCicadas Can you list the parts for that set? As a heavy lance user (600+ hunts just in 4u) I really want it.
Everything is just too tough for me to progress atm :( (hunter rank 7 if you're wondering.)
Great video!
Using white fatty, torso up from GX Tempest, barroth and the perfect talisman, i managed to get:
Constitution +2
Expert + 1
Edgemaster
Guard + 2
Guard up
Evasion + 1
So now I essentially bring the lance to every fight and I haven't carted twice since :) Thanks for helping me learn the lance gaijin :D
Incredible video, thanks so much for doing these, so hyped for the eu release tomorrow!
Damn, lance looks like a ton of fun. Cheers for making this video :)
This video just blew me away! I really need to try lance again!
from my running total of about 2000 or so hours from Freedom Unite to 3U, I could never really get myself to like lance, no matter how hard I tried. Though I think I just might this time with 4U. Thanks for sharing.
havent played mh since the psp days and i'm so astounded by all the changes lance receive!
but i see that evade lancing is still a thing. :3
the best way to lance, i feel, is to have a hybrid. guard+1 & evade+1 (and guard up if possible). once you get a good feel of the monsters you're facing and the evade timing, evade +1 is more than sufficient. any more is just to minimize your error as a hunter. also, there are certain attacks that are better off guarding than evading.
nonetheless, amazing tutorial videos!
Feels like the monster should have connected multiple times but didn't :o
Thanks a lot for these tutorials, they're jsut pure gem.
i was always a lance user till the switch axe came along
but after watching your demo.. ill go sparta on the new MH4U!!!
A great weapon for SnS mains that want to try something new
I say SnS mains because they are the ones that truly understand that great damage isnt everything
And because Before Legionaries, there were Hoplites
Wow, this is great! I want to put my great sword in the closet now and primary a lance. Thank you for making these awesome instructional guides!
I'm looking forward to picking it back up in mh4u.
switch axe is bae, but this is making me consider taking up the lance
Thanks for all your awesome videos @gaijinhunter , Lance is my new fave weapon because of this video.
What Lance and Armor would you recommend with both Evade and Guarding playstyles?

.
Thanks for all these tutorials, gaijin. The in game tutorials don't explain it near as well as you do ;) i was trying for figure out the charge for the longest time, and didn't know you actually needed 3 buttons. The game just explains it as a "special attack button" ...which explains nothing...
great video! i love the lance. awesome new move that jumping charge attack into mount! Btw, was this recorded using the new 3ds?
I'm about to be criticized for the Lance set I run, but I honestly don't care. It's been the best set I've run with it.
I wear a straight Gravios X set or armor with a Creator Talisman that buffs Mounting and Sharpener, plus 3 slots. The Lance of choice would be Daora's Regulus. The skills I have activated are Defense Up (XL), Guard +2, Speed Sharpening, Guard Boost, and Mounting Master. I have never had this much fun with a weapon since The Hammer (my personal main).
Thanks man I just made expellger and didn't know what to do with it. But now I'm better than ever! Thanks man!
Lol 1 too many thanks didn't mean to be obsessive. Sorry
One thing you missed that I just now figured out in the demo is that you can do R+X+A mid air and start up your sprint even while sheathed!
So for example: [X+A, X+A, X] wouldn't work.
lmao the evade lancing was stressing me out, my brain cannot comprehend lancing without guarding and countering
Well done! Your tutorial is very nice and fun! Now can you make a Dual Blade tutorial? Thumbs up!
Great video! Very nice and easy to understand.
Awesome tutorial my fav. is the hammer else the switch axe but i'll try the lance guard++ seems pretty nice but needs some excersice i guess ^^
hope i can have a new 2nd/3rd fav. weapon now :D
y'know, I finally get why the Lance can mount monsters so easily ; Jousting!.
It's silly, but yeah lol
Still a GL man myself, but one of my buddies I used to play with will be loving the added mobility this time around!
Thanks for the video. I enjoyed watching it, but doesn't the sweep attack give some super armor?
Hey Gaijin, I noticed weapons in the same category will have different lengths. Does that mean the longer/bigger ones will have bigger hitboxes or is it just aethetic (please let it be the former :)
Peter Young It's purely aesthetic, if it weren't... I'd be using lance a lot more than I do.
hey gaijin thanks for the tutorial. one quick question, which set can i make at g2 to compliment the lance best? i've made it this far with double gore >_< now ppl are getting mad online
Well done, gaijin. Keep up the awesome work!
10:57 WAIT!
you can use a Guard Advance to plow through attacks?!
Now that I'm learning lance I see this.
Thanks Hunter!
I thought the Lance was the "turtle" weapon, I'm do gladly surprised to see this, looks like I have another weapon I like!
I've been lancing since Mhfu
There's a few things i'm trying to learn tho that were added to the lance. For example you can now hop during your charge... However it seems like half the time i try it i just end up stopping. There's also the reflex block which i kinda did in mh3, but I've totally forgotten how to do it.
I'm basically just oldschool lancing, but learning these two things would be so nice lol.
thx for the video.
what about head locking?
saw this video when i was hr2 haven't switched to another weapon since then. i"m at bronze crown now lance is the best
15:01 What about Dalamadur/Dara Ayamadura's beam? That would be insane if you can.
I knew I picked the right weapon. I'm getting MH4U for Christmas, and I had to decide between Great Sword or Lance.
+Bento Life Me too! But I will definitely try the Charge Blade.
Me too. i chose the insectblade.
+Bento Life why limit yourself to only one weapon? use all of them!
+Mr.Saturn The chosen one Lance, Sword and Shield, and Greatsword
+Bento Life
Good choice
Also, I think it'd be really cool if you did a video on evade lancing.
Lancing with evade dist+ and evade +2
The idea is that instead of blocking you can just side step and back step every incoming attack.
Many players with 1000+ hours do it and is considered one of the most pro strategies in the game.
