    Been playing with LS for 400 hours across 3 games, and you STILL show me subtle things I haven't discovered myself. Your tutorials are an AMAZING asset to the community. Thanks so much!

    Remember how OP the Longsword was in MH Tri. Spirit gauge never diminished during Spirit combo. Red buff and endless spirit combos for days lol

      I remember using the LS from Jhen carves to hunt Ceadeus. Because of the dragon element and his huge body letting me spirit combo almost endlessly (especially if you stayed near his armpits, none of his attacks hit you), it was so easy to one-round him with like 10-20 minutes to spare.
      Despite that I still couldn't get one of those rare materials to complete my Ceadeus armor set...

    good video but be careful when calling the fade slash an evade, you might give people the wrong idea about he fade slash since it doesn't actually provide any invincibility frames (like a proper evade would) its used more to re-position yourself so you don't need to worry about the attack in the first place

      In the game, you can "trip" people, which is hitting them with your own attacks. It won't damage them, but what it does is makes other players stumble, and get knocked on the ground.
      Of course to also not make this a constant trouble, every weapon has attacks that lets you gain Super Armor, where during any attack motion your character does, they cannot get tripped or anything, even from monsters, but the Lance and Gunlance weapon doesn't have alot of those kind of attacks, and nor does any of the ranged weapons.
      While every weapon can trip players up, Longsword is the worst cause of the super wide range they have. They have the longest melee range in the game, so if you stand in teh worst place, you could possibly end up tripping all the other melee people up, which is really annoying.

    thank you for this awesome tutorial =D
    Altough there are two things you didn't mentioned:
    1. After the first Spirit Slash, instead of (A) you can press (X) and that will do the jab as well.
    2. Also, if you use the run-in slash after an fade slash, and to the additional uppercut after run-in Slash, you can use an Spirit combo from there. It starts exactly where it would as if you have only used run.in Slash without extension. So the combo can be extended to: X+A, R, X, R, R
    EDIT: Yep, tested it in the demo right now! you can do the Spirit Combo after the additional uppercut =)
    the pressing of X instead of A after the first Spirit Slash works as well! =D
    edited my post now so that it fits x3

      Opheliac Dan well the raw damage from MH2 to the next installment got nerfed, yes, but it was still an fantastic weapon, thanks to the spirit gauge that increases the Raw Damage everytime you raise the gauge.
      In MH4U however, the "nerfed" the weapon again. Normally, when the red gauge runs out it goes back to yellow, so that you only have to do one combo again in order to get back to red. So that way, you are pretty much able to constantly have red gauge, or at least have an easy time getting back to it. In MH4U however, if the red gauge depletes, it turns back to NORMAL! So you have first get back to White, than yellow and finally back to red.
      Sounds like a big nerf, but it isn't THAT annoying. If you do a full spirit combo while you are in red mode, the red gauge will stop depleting for a set amount of time. And it does EVERYTIME you do a full Combo and hit with the finisher. Additionally, they added a run-in attack, which you can perform after a fade Slash (evasive maneuver with the sword) to get back close to the opponent. and THAT can lead into an SHORTER Combo of the Spirit Slash Combo, which makes it EASIER to build/maintain the gauge.
      So overall, the weapon is more buffed than nerfed honestly. People make a big deal out of it, but it isn't THAT bad!

    This tutorial taught me so much, I'm going to start practicing with it right away..... It especially cleared up the reason why I always found it difficult to get my sword to glow, I always thought it was a "hit enough spirit attacks and it will happen" kind of thing...

  • @RANDM2DAY
    @RANDM2DAY 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Also would like to add how the spirit gauge fills up:
    The gauge fills up faster depending on the amount of damage you do, so for example hitting a seregios in the legs will fill it up faster than having it bounce off of its wings, and using a downward or fade slash will contribute more than a jab. The fill rate is also increased if you have the armor skill "Focus" (fastcharge +10).
    Also, if you don't hit a monster for a the 30 seconds when the gauge is full, or when you're trying to fill it, the gauge will start to deplete. At first, it depletes slowly, but the longer you don't hit a monster, the faster it will deplete.
    Another thing, because of the attack boosts granted from roundhouse slashes, it is easier to fill the spirit gauge, with red being the easiest to fill (possible to fill a completely empty gauge in 3-4 hits without Focus!)
    Anyway, I saw that these weren't mentioned in the video, so I wanted to add a little more detail to the weapon I used since MHFU. Nice tutorial, and I hope this helps.

    How to avoid tripping with LS.
    Everyone use LS.

  • @valkyrion_ex1173

    Fell in love with LS right from the start. I LOVE that they allow you to continue a spirit slash combo after X+A now. Just makes the flow of the weapon even tighter. I submain CB as of 4U, but when shit needs to get done I always come back to my trusty LS. :3

    • @familydude-lq7ec
      @familydude-lq7ec 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aaron K. I main every weapon in this game. Although, the LS is my favourite, by far. It's just such a shame that tripping friends is a mechanic (even though I know it's there to prevent us from just destroying a monster). High Ranked hunters always have a feeling of distress when they find an LS user. Tripping people is just so easy :/.

    • @valkyrion_ex1173
      @valkyrion_ex1173 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't play online but I can always imagine how annoying that would be.

  • @happyhealsgaming7614
    @happyhealsgaming7614 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    People who says the LS is the worst cause of the whole tripping and super wide attack...
    It isn't the weapon that's terrible. It's the player that uses the Longsword where all they care about is dishing out damage and purposely not caring for team-mate that is terrible.
    Besides, you only need the last Roundhouse slash to hit to get the buff. So I make sure when I go LS, to make sure this attack hits so I get the buff, and once I get to yellow or red buff, I make sure to use combos/attacks where I won't hit my teammates (If I'm hitting the head and someone is next to me, use the downward slash and jab or when the monsters knocked over and 2 people are on the tail, I either join in using the downward slashs and jab or go for the head and use a full combo). I make sure that I use the right attacks, not only cause of where the monster is, but also where my teammates are standing. If a Hammer guy is wailing on the head, a CB guy hitting legs, then I'll be on the tail. Or, if the monsters knocked down and the other 2 blademasters wailing on the head, I'll be on the tail. If I have end up having to hit the same spot as the other blademasters, then I'll make sure to use mostly the downward slash and jab so I don't trip the others up.
    Every weapon can trip, or worse fullstop stop you from doing any attack.
    DS users can still trip people if some idiot runs up, goes demon-mode and uses the demon-combo right on top of someone whose hitting the tail, it just trips them forever, or stops them from using a combo of their own. Not to mention I see some DS users try and aim for the tail of a monster that's standing, and since its so short, they hardly hit it enough to make count, or worse, they just try and mount the monster so they hit the tail when it falls.
    Annoying Bowgunners whose so lazy to aim and just fires willy nilly, and doesn't realize they're hitting their own teammate in the back whose trying to hit the monster but keeps getting flinched after every damn attack they do. Or using Crag-Shot just to do damage, but ignores that their team-mate is right on the monsters face so when the shot explodes it knocks their teammates onto the ground.
    Frigging CB users who just goes in and unleashes their elemental blast, or the charge shot RIGHT in the middle of their team-mate, where it explodes and causes all his teammate to get knocked away. Or using that annoying super-wide attack continuously which can also trip teammate up.
    Or worse, idiotic GS or Hammer users who doesn't know the timing of monster attacks, and caring only to unleash their super awesome Charge-Attacks, they completely wiff it cause the monster moved quicker than they anticipated and instead get hit in the face with a fireball attack, or worse, get literally 1-shot killed.
    Every weapon has pros and cons, some that relies on learning monsters size, length, attack timing, some requiring you position yourself properly so you help your teammate, and some involving patience to get the most out of it. However with any weapon, if all the User care about is doing the MOST damage, staying in Arch Demon Mode, Red-Bar Mode, or doing Charge Attacks is more important than positioning yourself for other teammates, doing the right attacks and timing it well so you cut the monsters tail, KO'ing them or stunning, then yeah, at that point, almost every weapon becomes annoying, and horrible to deal with.

    LS is such a cool weapon class
    I always have my buddy tell me when he's about to use his combo, so I can let him use it and get in after. Helps more than just dog=piling on the monsters.

  • @BelmondoZzz
    @BelmondoZzz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    One thing I would add is you can slightly steer the round slash to go a little left or right. This way you can try and avoid teammates and leave yourself in a better spot next to the monster.

    Gajinhunter I love you for making MH4U longsword tutorial video X D. I really love the new run slash and different methods and techniques to utilize it to the fullest potential. I am going to miss the spirit gauge refilling itself but that is the thing I have learn to use longsword again. I laughed at the tripping part so true! They should really give lancer super body or just make them untrippable.

    First things first. Thank you for your awesome vid's, you're the Reason why i tried LS and Main'd it. But here's something u didn't cover, what imo is essential. When you're at least in the white lvl u actually jumpdraw into spiritattack 1 AND 2 through pressing R+X+A. It's faster than performing them one after the other, u can combo on from there, u don't need spirit energy 2 do so (guess its weaker then, it consumes it if u got enough, otherwise it stays at the same amount and if u hit u get some -> this actually makes it possible to go from yellow to red gauge without any spiritgauge in the beginning! [Combo is: Jumpdraw(R+A+B) > Upperslash(x) > Evasionslash(A+B) > CloseIn(R) > Upperslash(X) > Spiritcombo 3 > 4(R > R)]) plus i noticed that i mount quite often using this so my guess is that both attacks get the jump bonus and do mount dmg. Oh and i love making Lancers trip. It's just way too much fun giving them a toad 2 lick... ;)

    I find the LS to be a very balanced weapon in MH3U. I mained it through the village quests and it didn't let me down. It has decent movement speed, good range, decent elemental damage, and good raw power. The only drawback was how it hinders multiplayer with wide horizontal swings, but the 3ds version didn't have online so it didn't matter much. It was possible to have a consistent red spirit guage in 3U, making it one of the strongest weapons. It makes sense that they had to nerf that somehow.

    While doing spirit slash, you don't need to spam R to get the next attack off. There's a small window where you can wait to use the next attack, gaining some time to wait for the monster to get back into slashing range.

  • @Nezumi_The_Stripes
    @Nezumi_The_Stripes 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't see why people complain so much about LS trips. At least when you're tripped you get a window of invincibility, unlike getting hit by anything the DS does which only cause a stagger and leave you vulnerable. I've actually prevented people from carting by tripping them with the Fade Slash.

    The LS is my favorite next to the GS. There is one problem/benefit.
    Problem:You can't spam spirit roundslash combo like you could in Monster Hunter Tri. Doing that made the LS op despite being generally weaker than the GS.
    Benefit: At least the LS is more balanced now that you can't spam spirit roundslash combo. Now I can practice new techniques instead of taking the easy way out.

    I don't know why people keep saying long sword suck and the worst weapon ever, I use long sword and usually kill the monster before 10 min ( sometime less 5 min) in g rank solo, i like spirit guide new one because it last much more than before especially the red one, is easy to reach the red if you know how to use it long sword, but if you having a hard time to maintain the red guide you are not good with long sword, longsword has become anti newbie because the monster have more mobile so now you need to learn the right timing , thanks the new move and the aire attack make much easily to finish the spirit combo and making short cut, in mh4u i feel more aggresive because I never stopping attack thanks the new move after the fade slash and I'm usually in red guide all the time than before and ussually when quest end my spirit guide was almost gone in red, i don't know how you guys play it if you can't do it right doesn't mean everyone can't, For my opinion everyone have different skill, i suck with lance but I'm good with gunlance, some people are wrost with gunlance other don't is for you longsword suck doesn't mean weapon suck than other weapon like the food if you don't like broccoli doesn't mean everyone don't like it.

    At about 2:40 seconds it says that by holding left/right you can do a fade slash with X. Has it changed? Because i thought you had to use X+A to do the fade slash with the direction pad?

    I love the LS the moment i saw it on mhf2. But back then, the move was not so impressive especially the fade slash only fade back. But on mhp3, i honed my skill using it and found that one of the must skill to have is evade+ since the fade slash doesn't give you invincibility.
    In mh4u, i hate that they totally nerf the spirit bar. They can make the red bar depleted faster but make it totally gone and start from scratch, that's messed up. Anyway, love using the LS but don't really recommend it against a fast moving enemy with large hitbox especially without evade+ because fade slash doesn't always guarantee your safety.
    Wish they make the LS movement a bit faster in mhx, that would make it a lot cooler and will make us a hell like a true samurai 😀.

      @FancyKerbloops 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yongki Siaw I'd like if it was faster, too. Maybe they could build in a speed up mechanic to the bar itself. LS being overpowered isn't really a concern most people have.. *cough* chargeblade/IG *cough*. Here's hoping. But I'll always go LS regardless. Too stylish and graceful to pass up on.

    I'm new to monster hunter and playing it through for the the first time with the longsword. I have been having trouble fighting some of the more mobile monsters such as the tigrex and rathian. To be able to beat them I need to get the combo meter up to red, but I'm having a lot of trouble doing that because the tigrex just runs away after two hits, and rathian flies around. Any tips on how to stun them or something? I have beaten them with my friend who puts them to sleep with his hammer, but not alone.

  • @Spinelblade
    @Spinelblade 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel the spirit bar change is too drastic. It makes the player need to do the spirit combo far more, when it was already getting people upset due to how it trips people up. Now, to do even comparable damage, you need to be pulling out the spirit move constantly. I think a more fair change would be to make it so you couldn't lengthen red, but you only went down to yellow when it ran out. That way, you couldn't constantly be red, so you would get to yellow, and then use red for the moments you needed a strong damage boost.

  • @NickyCrunch
    @NickyCrunch 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay, i don't know if this is a thing in MH4U specifically or what, but I had done a move where I vaulted off lower side of a cliff, and mounted a monster. I didn't jump off a cliff, I did a move where I jump up a small step (one that you can just step up by running into it) and i jumped into the air and slashed. I cannot find anyone talking about this anywhere, and I'm just a total dumbass for not being able to figure it out. (I believe I was using long sword)

    • @aaronlimebeer1829
      @aaronlimebeer1829 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doickls That move you are talking about it a Sword and Shield exclusive move... unless the monster happened to be close to the edge and jostled you so you where free-falling as you attacked so you did a mounting strike as you fell that is.
      But yeah, SnS is the one that does the rising vault trick you are talking about for mounting.

      You reach the 3rd Spirit combo hit much, much faster, allowing you a quick "shortcut" to the round slash to level up your glowing, thus much higher DPS if you can keep it at red afterwards.

    • @korofrog
      @korofrog 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      whydoyouaskdude I had to watch this vid a few times to figure it out but as far as I can tell, there is nothing special about that upward slash.
      If you go to 7:45 where he's fighting the jaggi, he does a fade slash, run in slash, then right into spirit 3. There was no upward slash.
      During the lagombi fight, his whole combo is X, X, A, X+A, R, X, R, R. There he did do the upward slash after the run in slash, but the only reason I can think of is to ensure he had enough energy to complete the roundhouse and for some extra hits.

    • @DemonicChocobo
      @DemonicChocobo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      korofrog I'm pretty sure you got it. That's likely what's "special" about that upward slash. It gives you just a little bit more gauge to secure that round slash when starting without full gauge. That combo let him quickly jump from 0 to Round Slash in one go.

  • @Gronmin
    @Gronmin 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    why do you use x+x+a+x as your base combo? I use x+a+x and then you can either repeat the combo or use (xa) to step back and deal damage all very quickly. I find that doing the second x at the beginning slows you down a fair amount.

    • @Mystletaynn
      @Mystletaynn 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The overhead slashes have much higher motion values, and do much more damage than the jab and upslash. Adding the extra one in may slow you down, but you're easily getting your time's worth from it, always do it when you can.

    • @DylanBFishkeeper
      @DylanBFishkeeper 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cariforti There's a damage calculation formula that goes on every time you land a hit on a monster. I believe Gaijin did a video on this as well, titled "MH4U: How Physical Damage Works." Definitely check that video and the elemental damage followup out, because he explains a lot about the way damage works in them.
      Anyways, the basics are those numbers are "motion values." A motion value takes the damage of your weapon, runs it through some other factors to get a true damage, and then applies the motion value to that as a percentage. So a higher motion value means more damage is applied by that move than one with a lower value. A little more of an explanation's below:
      Let's make a hypothetical weapon that shows you 1000 attack with yellow sharpness. This weapon type has a calculation that converts that 1000 to 100 true attack (a "weapon modifier" of 10, meaning you take [displayed damage/weapon modifier], sharpness modifier of 1 for yellow, etc.). So let's say the draw attack of this made up weapon also has a "forward slash (26)" move, and a charge move (95).
      The hit lands, and the damage applied is 26% of the true attack. So 26 damage hits the monster, and then defenses reduce/enhance that depending on where you hit the monster. So hitting a hard part of a monster, like the head of a silver rathalos will only apply 18% of that 26. Hitting the head of a regular old rathian will do 90% of that 26, though, a much higher damage. This is why it is important to hit "weakspots" on monsters, because the damage you deal can really be messed with by their natural armor values.
      Meanwhile, the charge move hits for 95% of that 100 true attack, meaning it has the potential to deal a lot of damage in one blow. That's the principle of the Great Sword, which has some insane motion values on its charged swings.
      The damage calculation is really a lot more complex than everything listed here (there's even modifiers based on the quest rank and where you hit with the blade of a LS/GS), but the general takeaway you should have is that some moves trade speed for power, and you need to know when and where to use them. The parenthesis value is just the exact amount of damage your weapon does on a particular strike, to help you gauge your big damage moves in your combos.

    @LeggoMyNooks 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm new to this channel. Sorry but what does the numbers in parentheses mean? (#)?
    is that the damage or something?

    • @shenfb
      @shenfb 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LeggoMyNooks It's the motion value (damage). So to calculate damage, you take the weapon''s raw, then divide it by the class modifier. For example: The Great Sword's class modifier is 4.8. Take a Great Sword with 1200 raw, divide it by 4.8. That is your base attack (250 in this case). The number in paranthese is the motion value, which is the percent of that base attack you do on that hit. So let's say a weapon has 250 base attack, and does 18 Motion Value of damage, that means you're doing 18% of 250 damage on that hit.
