I put a topcoat over the Rustolium Countertop Paint. I used linen for my countertops & a Polyacrylic as a topcoat/Sealer and it has been amazing. No Cracks, No Scratches, it looks great, cleans up great 👍👍👍👍👍. I spent more time doing prep than I did painting and I’m so Happy with the results!! 😁
I noticed you didn't use a primer. That would have helped a lot and allowed the paint to settle more evenly. Also a coat or two of epoxy resin would have given it a really hard top
For ANYTHING that absorbs a lot of light or becomes the main focus of color like black or any other deeply saturated colors- gotta prime it. If you can’t find primer for whatever reason, be prepared to do multiple coats for complete coverage. It applies to dyed black hair too 😉 don’t ever think you can go from dark to light easily, it’ll always be a process. 1.) prep surface - wash & scrub well - sand surface - wash again very well -go over with acetone or high percentage alcohol (this is crucial before primer or paint) as certain cleaners have degreasers that prevent the paint from being absorbed properly by the surface 2.) tape off & plastic areas you don’t want painted. Be very careful with 3M painters tape. Thick coats risk paint bleeding into the tape, so make sure it’s secured properly or get a good quality painters tape. 3.) prime first if possible. Primer will save you from doing too many coats of paint. (2 coats of primer is ideal, bc after the first coat dries, it’s a good idea to go back to see & feel your progress, you may realize you have some light sanding to do, this would be the time.) 4.) paint your base coat. 1-2 coats if primer was used, 3-5 coats if without primer. 5.) top coat or gloss. You should only need 2-3 coats of gloss, especially if you used primer. For whatever reason the counter still isn’t shiny enough for you, you can consider your options for coat of epoxy. It’s more involved & can make the countertops heavier, but it also makes them more durable. Good luck on your future projects, and remember, it’s easy to go from light to dark, but always a process going from dark to light in ANYTHING you want to change color.
@@ronilda2231 hi! I have another video using appliance paint which worked way better but one thing I do suggest is lots of prep. Lots of sanding and priming before the appliance paint. th-cam.com/video/lU723JQEnWA/w-d-xo.html
If you didn't, the surface wasn't prepared correctly. That's why you got those blotches where the paint wouldn't stick. Should scuff the surface with either scotchbrite (red preferably, not green), or even better sandpaper (to get rid of some of that texture while you're at it), and the final cleaning with with a solvent based cleaner that doesn't leave any residue. They actually sell stuff named prep cleaner/surface prep.....
I really love that you showed what it looks like after wear. I have been wanting to do something to my counter tops as well. Formica from when we bought the house, but they are looking older and I hate the color!
Totally get ya! I would have been “ok” with the black countertops but they were worn down by the previous owner, no idea what they did to get them like that. The house is not that old! Thanks for watching Jules!
First off, thanks for your honest review, very much appreciated. Next, my thought is that I wonder if the counters were completely cleaned with alcohol to remove all suds and remaining grease, which would result in the paint not taking. Also, maybe use a self leveler before the next painting, might help with those chipped spots not happening. Anyway, I appreciate your work and video, since I want to refinish my 1951 laminate countertops. 😁 …I must be crazy!
That’s very true. Just buy the cans at the same time to make sure they match. I thought this looked grayish when it was said to be white. Thanks for watching!
The reason there was black showing thru might be because of incomplete surface prep. Not sanded correctly, wrong grit, or most likley the Dawn was not cleaned away using alcohol, or automotove type pre painting surface cleaner. If primer was not required one of those is the problem. Rustolium should have better "Directions" on the can.
Watched your video of painting your counters white, did U ever do a repaint video of an appliance paint? Would really like to see how it looked & did U like it better??
didn't sand and rough up the surface so the paint forms a bond with the surface. Fresh paint on a previously smoothed manufactured surface will encourage the new paint to chip
I have the exact same Formica counters and was hoping you would have had a better outcome. I think if you hadn’t done such a drastic color change you would have had better results. I think if you wanted white you could have used Rustoleum’s appliance paint. I’ve used it on refrigerators and it really does an amazing job- but you would need at least 3 coats to go over black. I think I’m going to try the counter paint but do it in dark gray so if it chips it won’t be noticeable. Thanks for your video!
Hi! I did eventually used the appliance paint. In fact I have a video on that and also another video on 3 different paints for countertops. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
If you want to change it cheap this stuff is awesome I use it on rental properties and the hud inspector thought I put in concrete counter tops not that it looks that good just way better than they looked from that 80s style formica

Problem was they dont supply a colour chart and store doesnt have one either, so looked up on my phone, but the screen distorts colour... So now I am left with a colour in my shower I dont like! The kits come with an enamel paint, I've noticed. Look at the paint can you used, if it says enamel paint then just buy an enamel can of paint. i would prep the surface first by sanding. The best person to fully answer your question would be the paint expert at your store. Hope that helps some! :)
Not the countertop paint no. But I do have another video on here with the appliance paint which I would do but with better prep. That was a solid layer over the countertops.
Maybe if you had have finished painting the countertops with two thin and a final thick coat, you wouldn’t have had areas that weren’t covered and you wouldn’t have experienced the damage
Considering doing the same, but using boat-bottom marine grade paint. (Made for covering fiberglass hulls.) Regardless, painting over any plastic based material is difficult. Have yet to see it done & last but a few months. Every follow-up video pretty much shows similar wear results, unfortunately.
So I just wanna emphasize that you need to wear a respirator with voc grade filters and section off any openings to the house (with tape and plastic wrap, tightly) from the kitchen and turn off the air throughout the house and open all windows. And leave it like that alllll day. This stuff is rough and has extra toxic vapor.
