When his contract came up and with Fried maturing into an solid part of the rotation and Soroka Becoming the de facto ace of the club and AA actually going after pitchers did him in. He had shines of brilliance like pitching a no hitter into 7 inning versus the rockies at their home during the coldest day of the year but he's so horribly inconsistent and he could never get his emotions in control. Harper misses him though.

If you are referring to the Vernon Wells trade to the Angels, the only positive side from the Blue Jays' perspective was that someone was willing to take his contract, they did screw up when they traded Mike Napoli to Texas in the same week.

Lyman Bostock's death was even more tragic considering he wasn't the main target of the shooter. Donnie Moore's death was more an attempted murder-suicide. Luis Valbuena's car accident was a homicide, as it was caused on purpose by robbers in Venezuela. Nick Adenhart's death was made more tragic knowing that a) he was a passenger, and not the driver and b) some piece of s**t decided to get behind the wheel while plastered and killed a great young talent! I think it was in 2017, they went from “Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim” to strictly “Los Angeles Angels.” This was their ORIGINAL name when they expanded in 1961, playing their games at Wrigley Field (no, not the one in Chicago, but in LA, not joking look it up), and for a few years at Dodger Stadium before moving to Anaheim in the middle of 1965.

I appreciate the video, and a good find in Moreno. As a lifelong Angel's fan we've always known that's the problem. Well researched, per usual. I think you also hit on a couple good points about the controversies the Angels have been in recently (in opioids, minor leaguer treatment, and foreign substances), but there are other things that I would put partial blame on Moreno for. - Mickey Callaway was hired by the Angels. While the Mets should have also picked up on his awful history, the Angels should have known and not hired him in the first place - Arte Moreno wouldn't sign off on Manfred for commissioner because he thought Manfred would be not harsh enough to the Union. Which is insane to me that he's the greediest of the billionaires, and probably one of the main reasons the commissionership is what it is today Also, as an interesting side note, Arte Moreno made his money in marketing. There's been a lot of talk lately on Steve Cohen's ownership style influenced by his occupation, and I think Moreno is a lot the same way. He has to think that signing large free agent pitchers doesn't make as big of an impact as big sluggers do. He signed Rendon, Pujols, and CJ Wilson all after their World Series appearances. For that reason, the only big pitcher coming to the market I can see the Angels signing is Scherzer. Here's to hoping he sells the team soon so an ownership group (like Guggenheim) can take over.

As a Mariners fan I see the Angels plenty every year and the strategy is usually "Walk Trout". Ohtani adds another solid bat to that lineup, but the Mariners are still 8-5 against them this year and we're still rebuilding. I don't know what the hell the Angels even are. The LA Angels name made sense for about 5 years in the 1960s. California Angels is still the most iconic and sensible name for the team, but wouldn't be surprised if Disney re-buys the team they change both parts of name for something referring to the park; e.g. Anaheim Adventurers.

They’re the single hardest team in baseball to be a fan of, in my opinion. I’d probably even put the Marlins (and their penchant for fire sales) ahead of them. At least they have new ownership & a youth movement going, which is more than the Angels can say. Hell, even the Orioles have a ray of hope for the future lmao, despite playing in a division of four perennial juggernauts. And my team’s past decade has been pretty painful too (Phillies), but not Angels painful. Frankly, they feel like MLB’s Chargers to me now.

The Angels are stuck in the purgatory of loading up on hitting and getting no one to pitch. Most of their pitching has been one-year deals for has-beens.
I don't feel bad for Trout at all. He keeps getting MVP awards while his teams go down the crapper and nobody blames him for it. He's rich as hell and never has to worry about playoff pressure. It's a dream job. Well, except Ohtani is there now to steal his trophy.

Luis Valbuena's car accident was a homicide, as it was caused on purpose by robbers in Venezuela.
Nick Adenhart's death was made more tragic knowing that a) he was a passenger, and not the driver and b) some piece of s**t decided to get behind the wheel while plastered and killed a great young talent!

But, the minute he tried becoming the Yankees buying big bats and emptying the farm and meddling with every GM decision the team went to crap really fast. Maybe they should consider a return to the name "California Angels". People in Austin and San Antonio don't seem to mind DFW's baseball team claiming themselves for all Texas.

I think it was in 2017, they went from “Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim” to strictly “Los Angeles Angels.” This was their ORIGINAL name when they expanded in 1961, playing their games at Wrigley Field (no, not the one in Chicago, but in LA, not joking look it up), and for a few years at Dodger Stadium before moving to Anaheim in the middle of 1965.
Too many teams here in California. Anaheim has its own identity!
They changed their name to California Angels in Sept. 1965 to promote their new move down to Anaheim in time for the 1966 season.
Also in the NBA we have the "Golden State Warriors" referencing California so yeah California Angels would work well

I appreciate the video, and a good find in Moreno. As a lifelong Angel's fan we've always known that's the problem. Well researched, per usual. I think you also hit on a couple good points about the controversies the Angels have been in recently (in opioids, minor leaguer treatment, and foreign substances), but there are other things that I would put partial blame on Moreno for.
- Mickey Callaway was hired by the Angels. While the Mets should have also picked up on his awful history, the Angels should have known and not hired him in the first place
- Arte Moreno wouldn't sign off on Manfred for commissioner because he thought Manfred would be not harsh enough to the Union. Which is insane to me that he's the greediest of the billionaires, and probably one of the main reasons the commissionership is what it is today
Also, as an interesting side note, Arte Moreno made his money in marketing. There's been a lot of talk lately on Steve Cohen's ownership style influenced by his occupation, and I think Moreno is a lot the same way. He has to think that signing large free agent pitchers doesn't make as big of an impact as big sluggers do. He signed Rendon, Pujols, and CJ Wilson all after their World Series appearances. For that reason, the only big pitcher coming to the market I can see the Angels signing is Scherzer. Here's to hoping he sells the team soon so an ownership group (like Guggenheim) can take over.
Scherzer's going to be a huge risk as well. He's 37 and, knowing Moreno, he'll probably throw a five-year, $150 million deal at him.

As a Mariners fan I see the Angels plenty every year and the strategy is usually "Walk Trout". Ohtani adds another solid bat to that lineup, but the Mariners are still 8-5 against them this year and we're still rebuilding. I don't know what the hell the Angels even are. It's been a long, long time since the Rally Monkey.
I feel bad for poor Julio... he was one of two bright spots (the other being Freddie) on the Braves who sucked for 4 years in the mid-2010's, and he deserved better than what ended up happening. With that, he was WASHED. That's why the Braves didn't resign.

As an Angels fan since 2001 and rejoiced the 2002 world series as a kid, this is pretty accurate. They have the same issues for a long time and they don't fix the pitching and the minor leagues. The Angels had the winning formula to win it all and add K-Rod into the mix. Great time seeing K-Rod with the Ks in the Game 7 of the World Series and the flare that the 2002 team had is missing in many Angels teams. And yeah, the Angels belong to Anaheim!!! They've been in Anaheim since 1966. Come on, Angels, bring back the Anaheim name and don't ever King Felix'd Trout and Ohtani. Arte Moreno had the highs in the 2000's and had numerous terrible contracts after 2009. Yikes.

The LA Angels name made sense for about 5 years in the 1960s. California Angels is still the most iconic and sensible name for the team, but wouldn't be surprised if Disney re-buys the team they change both parts of name for something referring to the park; e.g. Anaheim Adventurers.

Even if he had no idea about Eric Kay’s drug ring, that means he let a damn drug ring go in his friggin stadium without his knowledge. That negligence led to his player overdosing and 5 more players getting addicted.

They’re the single hardest team in baseball to be a fan of, in my opinion. I’d probably even put the Marlins (and their penchant for fire sales) ahead of them. At least they have new ownership & a youth movement going, which is more than the Angels can say. Hell, even the Orioles have a ray of hope for the future lmao, despite playing in a division of four perennial juggernauts. And my team’s past decade has been pretty painful too (Phillies), but not Angels painful. Frankly, they feel like MLB’s Chargers to me now.
