- This one's a little different than the standard Legacies of Failure that I do. What do you take of a man that is the epitome of snakebit? Missed field goals, interceptions, fumbles, rampant self-destruction of his teams. It's everything that Marty Schottenheimer's experienced in his NFL coaching tenure.
For those of you too young to remember his time, consider this a painful trip down memory lane.
I don't know why, but I can't bring myself to do the usual schtick with him. Maybe this video will explain why. Kind of?

Unfortunately, Marty Schottenheimer is currently battling Alzheimer’s disease. For all of his postseason heartbreak, he’s still 8th all-time in career wins with 205.
Update: As reported by Adam Schefter, he’s been moved to a hospice facility. Please keep him and his wife and family in your thoughts.
Update 2: As reported by Adam Schefter, Marty Schottenheimer has peacefully died with his family by his side on February 8, 2021. May he be remembered with reverence.

I am here - and in mourning. I certainly don't share the insensitive comments in this fucking video. Marty was a great coach - but even more than that, he was a man who was not ashamed to show his emotions - as Jennifer Montana once said. Why hasn't Joe made a statement today? That sort of sucks. Anyway, Marty was even greater as a parent. Of that, I have the highest respect.

What's awful about that interception->fumble against the Patriots is that there's recordings of Schottenheimer LITERALLY telling his players when they make the interception to win the game GO DOWN dont run it. Like...if thats not a sign of being cursed I don't know what is. Can't blame Marty if someone just plain doesnt listen.

@@CuriousOfficial I'm gonna go a step further and say selfish. Because trying to go for yards at the point in the game they were in is about boosting your stats. Especially after your coach explicitly tells you not to do that! Put himself before the team.
@@Gungho73 had the chargers batted the football down instead of intercepting/fumbling it they'd be in even greater field position and likely would've won that game. SD always gave colts a hard time and game would've been on their own turf. SD should've won that title
And after the game Marty took the blame for it telling the press that he needed to prepare his players for that situation

God, I remember Schottenheimer from like fifteen years ago or so. Think NFL was starting to get proper coverage in the Brazilian version of ESPN, remember seeing him once or twice and going "poor guy".

As a lifetime Chiefs fan, I have nothing but love for Marty. It saddens me that he has Alzheimer's and doesn't even remember most of his coaching career now.
Milsurp Mike Channel I was at the preseason game where Marty was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame. All of Arrowhead erupted into chants of “Mart-y, Mart-y, Mart-y!” It was great. Even though I was a kid when he was here and didn’t watch football until ‘03, I heard plenty and have seen several games. The man was a damn good coach and he deserved to at least get to 1 superbowl.

I've been a San Diego homer my whole life, I was too young to remember the Boss Ross teams my Dad still talks about, but I can still recall the horrors of Ryan Leaf. Marty had a lot to do with the change in how fans felt about the team afterwards. Some of my favorite childhood sports memories are when the Padres beat the Braves in the NLCS & watching LT absolutely destroy teams in his prime. I am really grateful for all he did for this city in his time with the Chargers. He might not have been the most creative play-caller, or best player evaluator, but I enjoyed watching those early 2000s teams so damn much. Even if it meant getting your hopes crushed in the rain when Nate Kaeding blows his FG attempts. 😭

Marty is a prime example that you can be a great coach, but without some luck going your way at the right times, you will go from hero to zero instantaneously. Winning Super Bowls requires a ton of things to go your way, and yes, that includes luck. He just didn’t have the luck at the right times, and kept running into people like John Elway and Tom Brady who rain on his parade.
The man deserved a Super Bowl win. RIP Marty. "Martyball" will be remembered.

@@izzyyy8425 I’m a Raiders fan too, and yea. One of the great coaches of the 90’s and 2000’s, only to never even make it to a Super Bowl because of rotten luck. He helped bring some much needed additions to the game that draw parallels to what Pete Carroll did before Russ’s emergence or what Jack Del Rio did with us. May Marty rest in paradise.

Tree MUST tie in the Texans as a sidebar if this happens, albeit as a Legacy of Pain (counting the Oilers 2 AFL ‘ships). I know they’re just shy of 20 years old, but I think the pain they’ve experienced in their own right is a great tie-in.
Harry Engel is correct. If anything, it would be set up in this style (“Legacy of Pain”). That’s fair, and I can see multiple teams being subjected to it.

Awesome video!!! OH, the HEART BREAKS I have endured with Marty Schottenheimer coaching my Cleveland Browns & Kansas City Chiefs!!! Loved Marty in Cleveland, for he did bring respectability to that franchise. I became a Chiefs fan because of Marty. Damn, all the tears shed for the possibilities that he would maybe eventually get a team into the Super Bowl. Definitely had the talent (mostly) on both teams, but both teams picked the most inopportune times to suddenly collapse around him. Oh, the pain of those KC quarterbacks coming over from San Francisco (other than Steve DeBerg - loved watching him play!!). THANKS!!! for the memories!!!!

Marty Schottenheimer, as I call him the NFL's equivalent to MLB's Dusty Baker. Both know how to run a team, both will get you into the playoffs, then heartbreak in the playoffs. Still in awe how the Cubs beat the Nationals in the NLDS in 2017, like they tried to give it to the Nats
they DID. the rain delay gave them life. (MLB late games are very momentum based and they had none of it before that, it allowed them to gain a footing and the Nats immediately folded)
At least Dusty Baker can advance to the league's championship game. Everyone knows Marty Schottenheimer never won a Super Bowl, but it’s quite common to forget that Marty never made it to the Super Bowl.
While it is a bit unfortunate Schottenheimer's NFL legacy is nothing but postseason heartbreak, he still lived an incredible life that most of us dream of. R.I.P Coach

My late father raised me a Charger fan in the Marty-Brees era but I left with Drew to NOLA. I always will have a soft spot for the Bolts but dropping Marty was the worst idea ever. I totally understand picking Rivers over Breesus. Who knew he’d come back from that shoulder injury? And Rivers had a decade as a stud QB. But the Chargers have never come close since. Always been something wrong that sinks them.

See, you don't know anything about winning. Sure, football is a team sport, but you still need a QB to come up clutch in crunch time especially in the playoffs. That's why the QB gets more regular season and Super Bowl MVPs.
It’s honestly kind of surprising that a defensive coordinator like Marty ended up coach a bunch of top offenses as a coach, particularly with the Chargers.
That's why 14-2 doesn't even matter. That team would have won 14 games with a hamster calling the offense. ALLTIME HALL OF FAME OFFENE. ALLTIME HALL OF FAME DEFENSE. Still doesnt win a playoff. That's on the coach as much as anyone else.

I love me some Marty. Huge Chiefs fan, and have been one since the days of Mr. DeBerg at QB. He certainly presents the cautionary tale to any coach, owner, or fan that some of the time it really is a little luck that finally wins you the big game.
And yet, the Chargers gave Norv Turner chance after chance with mostly mediocre season after mediocre season.

Norv inherited a good team that's foundation was built upon the work of Schottenheimer and slowly transformed it into a pretty mediocre one.

I was at Arrowhead for a preseason game when they inducted Marty into the Chiefs HOF. Tons of old stars from the past were there as well as the top brass of the team. I will never forget the sea of red as they broke out into chants of “Marty, Marty, Marty”.
I remember watching that Chargers vs Patriots game as a kid and proceeding to question how the hell a coach gets fired after going 14-2. Going 14-2 and losing to the greatest dynasty in history? No shame in that.

There should be a Marv Levy Legacy of Pain. True, he did win the Grey Cup a couple of times with the Montreal Alouettes in 70s, but he's more notable for being the coach of the Buffalo Bills during their heartbreaking 4 Super Bowl losses.

Some of my earliest memories of my dad screaming at the television involved Marty Schottenheimer and the Chiefs. Once I was old enough to understand football, I joined in screaming at the television, too. There's a reason I had doubt in my mind until the clock hit 0:00 in the 4th quarter during Super Bowl LIV. I'd been broken early on in my childhood. I had nothing but cynicism and hearbreak due to one man. Who was he? Three words.

About my prior comment, I came to a conclusion after some research into history: when the Chiefs had a strong team without a ring in the 90's and 2000's, one or a couple of things were always clicking, and the rest was really bad.
Like in the 90's: awesome defense led by Derrick Thomas and the offense not among the best in the league, especially after Montana (with Allen getting old and QB's "above par", in the golf sense). Tony Gonzalez was great, but he was only one.
In the 2000's the Chiefs had Vermeil running a great offense, but the defense never stopped a drive by the Colts.
