This season was the same year as the famous Moneyball year for the Oakland A's. Imagine the Oakland front office doing all that work just to see their division rival win the whole thing. The same Twins team that ended the 2002 Athletics was dismantled by the Angels. 2002 was a great year. Two teams that I like faced off in the World Series and went to 7 games. I hope to see something like that again in the future, but seeing how both their seasons are going, it might take a while.

My dad got cancer in 2002. My uncles all pitched in to take him to every home playoff game that year. While these days he pretty much gets all his baseball news and stats from me, I will always know that if it weren’t for that fateful 02 team I may have never fallen in love with this beautiful sport.
Imagine the Angels this year won the championship this season. After all the ridicule and heartbreak for Angels fans, on Ohtani's walk year, they manage to win it all after having been winless in the postseason for the entirety of the 2010s while having Trout for most of it and Ohtani for some. And then you wake up.
😂 they gotta make playoffs 1st. Possible wild card if they go on a run. Dont think they will win the division against the rangers or Astros already ahead of them
I've been an Angel's fan since I moved to Orange County in 1977. I lived in Orange, literally 3 miles from the stadium. Went to 100s of games. I had screamed so much through Games 6 & 7 that I lost my voice. When they won the series I just stood in front of my TV and cried. They truly were the Cinderella team of all time in my book. I'll never forget it.
As a life long Angel fan the 2002 season was magical. I can’t believe it’s been 21 years. We started terribly then went on a tear. We would have won the division if it wasn’t for the As winning streak. 99 wins is pretty good though.
My uncle is the biggest Angels fan I’ve ever met and he got married on the night of the game 6 insane comeback (they planned the wedding in October when the angels were 10 games under .500) and now he has the actual Angels lineup card from game 6 as well as the hat John Lackey wore on the mound in game 7. We’ll never forget this playoff run and the incredible roller coaster of emotions all Angels fans went through during it.

Angels fan for 30 years. That team was just all around solid. Starters that could eat innings and could go into the 6th-7th inning on a regular basis. Some occasional pop from Glaus and Salmon, and guys like Darin Erstad who knew how to work the count and put the ball in play on a regular basis. The stars aligned perfectly that year and it was a beautiful thing to watch.

After a losing record in 2003 the angels had one losing season from 2004-2015 and if it wasn’t for the 09 Yankees and 05 white Sox the angels would have another title.
As a Iifelong dodgers fan, this angels team was fun to watch. I remember when Mike Scioscia was the dodgers catcher in the 80s and became the angels manager in 2000. It was also good to see Barry Bonds lose the World Series. Its always good to see the Giants lose in the World Series. I was happy for Scioscia, and coaches Mickey Hatcher and Alfredo Griffin. All 3 of their coaches were part of another underdog team in the 1988 Dodgers. Both the 1988 and 2002 World Series were the best.
This will always be my favorite World Series team. The team got built through the minor league system with Tim Salmon, Garrett Anderson, Troy Glaus, Darin Erstad, Jarrod Washburn, Troy Percival, John Lackey, and K-Rod coming out of it. At the time the team payroll was 16th in the league and that was during Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, and Dodgers spending wars with top free agents. For five years going back 1997 Marlins team whoever can spend the big bucks will most likely be in the World Series and winning it. Angels World Series victory became important as it reset the big spend trend. The following year Marlins won it with a team mostly built through their system. Teams realize they can build a talented team through their minor system put their investment into it.

10:18 I forgot all about Dusty Baker’s son, & batter boy, Darren, when he almost got trampled! Great breakdown of the last Angels WS championship. The only way the Angels will win another 1 is if they get a new owner. Which was soooooo close from happening this past year. Oh well🤷🏻♂️
Probably the most underrated World Series winners ever. Interesting facts I learned today: -This team won the same year as the Moneyball As (I knew this, just finally struck my Interesting bone today) -Giants were $17 mil higher in team payroll. -The Yankees had heartbreaking series losses 3 years in a row (01 WS Diamondbacks, 02 ALDS against Angels, 03 WS against Miami)
As a young angels fan I don’t remember their WS run since I was only 4 but I’m hopeful this years team can stay healthy and put up a winning season since it seems every player on this team can be a threat
I remember this season! I was only 10 years old but me and my dad watched it and I remember the movie “angels in the outfield” playing right before the big game. What a magical time to be a baseball fan
I was 8 years old, and living in Anaheim, I watched the series on TV with my grandfather, and you could hear the celebration from our house! Miss these days! Angels are lost!!!
I've heard multiple players cite John Lackey as their favorite teammate, and I love that; The fact you can come from deep Texas and look the way he does, and still be a nice guy.
This and the Diamondbacks beating the Yankees were the two World Series I remember most as a kid. Rockies getting swept will always be my favorite as a Rockies fan and probably only time we will go haha, but those two were my favorite and most memorable
One of the coolest things to me I always tell people about when the opportunity arises, my mom was in the same class as Darin Erstad at Jamestown High School in Jamestown North Dakota. I got to meet him about 12 years ago at their high school reunion. Thanks for this video, I’ve tried finding videos from this series but haven’t been able to find a whole lot.
Also Jim Edmonds was an Angel (although he wasn't on the 2002 team, he was traded in 2000 for Adam Kennedy and Kent Bottenfield. Kennedy was 2002 ALCS MVP.)
I found it so funny you posted this video today because I was literally talking about this team with David Eckstein yesterday. I went to a comic con and was waiting online to meet his wife Ashley (who voices Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars). David was there at her booth. Im a Yankees fan so i jokingly told him I was at him for knocking us out in 2002. He was super nice. I was super short as a kid so I always liked him because he was always one of the shortest guys in the league so I looked up to him.
It’s a collective effort, not just the individuals putting up stats. That’s all you hear nowadays is each persons individual effort instead of the collective effort, fundamentals and situational (1st to 3rd, moving runners) and team chemistry
In Game 6, when Felix Rodriguez came in and Scott Spiezio hit that 3-run home run, everyone knew the Angels were going to come back and win it. Very much similar to Jim Leyritz's homer in Game 4 of the '96 Series -- all the damage was dealt with one swing.
This was the season I fell in love with baseball. This is also the season that has caused delusional optimism for angels fans year after year even with horribly constructed rosters. The spirit of this 2002 team is still with fans today, for better or for worse .
The AL West was loaded that year. Imagine winning 93 games, coming in third place, and missing the playoffs. That was the 2003 Seattle Mariners. The last place Rangers could rake too. We're not going to talk about their pitching
Saw their game against the Rangers tonight at Angel Stadium. They embodied the same energy as 2002 Game 6 with their miraculous comeback in the last 2 innings.
Barry Bonds was my hero growing up and this World Series crushed me. I knew it was over after we blew game 6. Ive cried literally maybe 4 times in my entire 30 something years of life and that night I legit almost cried. If I wasn't watching the game with my dad I probably would've dropped a few tears but he would've beat my ass if he saw that. I wanted Barry Bonds to get that World Series ring soooo bad that season and the fact that he absolutely DOMINATED that World Series and playoffs in general was even worse. To this day I low-key hate monkeys because of that season. Dope video though dude. keep it up!
Nice amazing video about the Angel's needing to do this year. Team work, everyone team work. That has the way to come together to win and maybe even save Ohtani to win a world series. The Angel's are right now do anything to get to world series right now. This video shows what a team can do by doing the impossible to fight against the greatest teams of their time. History may repeat this year and that would be another poetic way of baseball. Also, the Angel's never giveup when down, so oretty poetic when someone let's up or makes an error for tye Angel's they will take anything. Also, crazy how this world series win had a huge impact for years to come for many major teams.
Its really a culmination of that loyalty generated by Salmon and Anderson and Erstad and Percival. I wish they were more well known. But anyways. You cannot obfuscate what they accomplished.
Love the video! You have to mention Scot Shields though! Anyways, I was there for Game 6. I was standing looking down through the tunnel where Bonds destroyed that ball for a homerun. I remember it hit a lady in the leg and she was on the ground.
As an Angels fan I appreciate the video, as someone who was there that year, you didn’t give nearly enough credit to Kennedy, Eckstein, and Erstad. They somehow played way above their weight class in some of the most clutch moments of the 02 season. Also Anderson played LF. Erstad owned center😂
"Everyone was rooting for those Angels" Speak for yourself mate, that 02 team ripped my heart out as a Giants fan. Though with time I can say I appreciate them. They remind me of a couple of the 2010s Giants world series winners, squads with a lot of talent but little in the way of bona fide superstars destined for the Hall of Fame.
Simple. He was always a slow starter, put up average numbers the first half of the season (when All Star votes are tabulated), then he heated up in the 2nd half. They used to say, "As the weather got warmer, so did Salmon."
Back then they had a very Good front Office, Farm System, Couching Staff... But mostly a better GM and Farm System is a Big main problem... They don't have that Now...
I’ve been an Angels fan for ever it seems like. And I remember that magical 2002 season. We had no business beating the New York Yankees and no business beating Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants. But we did! I remember a Red Sox player remark: “I don’t see no banners up there.” Well now we got one 😂
As a young kid and Giants fan, I was absolutely crushed. 5 outs away, man. I'm happy my team was able to redeem themselves later on but damn, Dusty giving the gameball to Russ in the eighth is still one of the biggest oofs in WS history.
The 02 Angels had a top seven starting rotation and an elite bullpen. And the lineup had no easy outs. After they bludgeoned the Yankees, I felt like they were the favorites.
Greatest year in Baseball history!! I’m sorry but I feel something was missed that was critical to them winning the World Series. In their first series against the Yankees in the first game the Angels had the lead in the bottom of the 8th and it was either 1 or 2 outs and, I forgot who was announcing the game but he made the comment that the Angels, although a good team, were playing the powerhouse Yankees and Mike should have Percival at least up and throwing. If need be get 4 or 5 outs. In the second game it was the exact same scenario in the bottom of the 8th and this time Scioscia brought Percival in the 8th and he shut them down for the win. I love the game and have been a fan since the ‘70’s but I was caught up in the tradition of the game and when I heard the announcer mention that I first thought it was a stupid idea until they loss, the very next game I was cheering the move.
I remember this series specifically for Scott Spiezio destroying a guitar in a pregame show. The mind of a child. I wonder if that footage still exists 😂.
spiezio was a wild man. i came home to my apt once a few years back and my roommate had a small party going. lo and behold, there was spiezio dancing in my living room. i was like wtf lol he ended up biting the neck off a beer bottle and chewing the glass and bleeding all over my carpet. he's better now tho.

As an Angels fan I needed this.
Spezio initiated our comeback in Game 6… Without his HR we would of been dunzo….. After game 6 comeback… Game 7 was ours for the taking!!!! 😇
I partied all night…. Anaheim, Orange, Santa Ana…. Massacred 🍺 🍻 🍺 🍻
02 Angels I was in middle school. A team effort. Every player contributed. One player that gets no love and who was just as nasty as K-Rod was Scot Shields.
Thank you for this Jolly Olive. What a time to be an Angel fan!
As a huge Barry Bonds fan, that Angels team will always hurt. Thanks Jolly!
Why are you a huge fan of Mr. Barry?
@@TiagoGomez-hb9te As a kid, his power fascinated me. He just looked like a superhero.
@@CharmCityGamer Only looked liked a Superhero when he was on the juice and his head doubled in size (1999-2007). He was strong before hand with already 400+ HRs in just 13 seasons but he never hit HRs in such a fast rate prior...
@@TiagoGomez-hb9te Roids do not improve performance, only improve health.
10:18 I forgot all about Dusty Baker’s son, & batter boy, Darren, when he almost got trampled!
Great breakdown of the last Angels WS championship. The only way the Angels will win another 1 is if they get a new owner. Which was soooooo close from happening this past year. Oh well🤷🏻♂️
This was the best team, best world series, best way to become a lifelong baseball fan. I have core memories from this season as a young boy.
agree...so good to defeat the evil SCUMBAG on the giants....barroid- the SCUMBAG.......
Probably the most underrated World Series winners ever.
Interesting facts I learned today:
-This team won the same year as the Moneyball As (I knew this, just finally struck my Interesting bone today)
-Giants were $17 mil higher in team payroll.
-The Yankees had heartbreaking series losses 3 years in a row (01 WS Diamondbacks, 02 ALDS against Angels, 03 WS against Miami)
Yanks blew a 3-0 lead in the 04 ALCS vs Boston. Way more heartbreaking than the 3 previous years
As a young angels fan I don’t remember their WS run since I was only 4 but I’m hopeful this years team can stay healthy and put up a winning season since it seems every player on this team can be a threat
Probably one of the most underrated teams and World Series. This team had some crazy magic that is so rare
I've heard multiple players cite John Lackey as their favorite teammate, and I love that;
The fact you can come from deep Texas and look the way he does, and still be a nice guy.
This and the Diamondbacks beating the Yankees were the two World Series I remember most as a kid. Rockies getting swept will always be my favorite as a Rockies fan and probably only time we will go haha, but those two were my favorite and most memorable
Same! Etched in my core memory bank
GOATED TEAM
Will never forget the rally monkey.
That year the Angels were the comeback kids, with 43, if I remember. Good year to be an Angels fan.
Which MLB teams have the most come from behind wins in season?
Always love hearing the stories of people around Anaheim about Game 6.
As a Giants fan this hurts
One of the coolest things to me I always tell people about when the opportunity arises, my mom was in the same class as Darin Erstad at Jamestown High School in Jamestown North Dakota. I got to meet him about 12 years ago at their high school reunion. Thanks for this video, I’ve tried finding videos from this series but haven’t been able to find a whole lot.
Crazy how much Troy percival is mentioned. Me and his daughter were good friends in highschool. He is a huge guy.
Lots of Cardinals legends on that team: Eckstein, Kennedy, Glaus, Lackey
💯
@@dataender96 Collectivism vs. Individualism
Man, Troy Glaus hit some NUKES back in the day.
I was at this world series. Go Angels!
I watched this entire world series (on antennae tv if you can believe) and remember nearly everyone one of these games. Was a magical post season.
This was the season I fell in love with baseball. This is also the season that has caused delusional optimism for angels fans year after year even with horribly constructed rosters. The spirit of this 2002 team is still with fans today, for better or for worse .
From 2002-2015 the angels were pretty dominate. They had only two losing seasons, a World Series and won the division six times.
Was at game 1 and 7. Absolutely electric!
The AL West was loaded that year. Imagine winning 93 games, coming in third place, and missing the playoffs. That was the 2003 Seattle Mariners.
The last place Rangers could rake too. We're not going to talk about their pitching
*2002 Mariners
Jolly, thank you so much for this videos. You made my year. Not very hard to please an angel fan.
Still one of the best plays in mlb history. JT Snow saving Dusty Bakers grandson from getting run over at the plate. 10:21
Saw their game against the Rangers tonight at Angel Stadium. They embodied the same energy as 2002 Game 6 with their miraculous comeback in the last 2 innings.
Definitely a crazy run, Glaus went off for em
Barry Bonds was my hero growing up and this World Series crushed me. I knew it was over after we blew game 6. Ive cried literally maybe 4 times in my entire 30 something years of life and that night I legit almost cried. If I wasn't watching the game with my dad I probably would've dropped a few tears but he would've beat my ass if he saw that.
I wanted Barry Bonds to get that World Series ring soooo bad that season and the fact that he absolutely DOMINATED that World Series and playoffs in general was even worse.
To this day I low-key hate monkeys because of that season. Dope video though dude. keep it up!
Bomds is an asshole and was a terrible post season player aside from 2002. He didn’t deserve a ring.
Jolly Olive's upload early in the morning is my breakfast
As an Angels fan I appreciate the video, as someone who was there that year, you didn’t give nearly enough credit to Kennedy, Eckstein, and Erstad. They somehow played way above their weight class in some of the most clutch moments of the 02 season. Also Anderson played LF. Erstad owned center😂
Thanks for this…maybe this will bring some better baseball for long time fans…
I appreciate that your ads are at the end of the vid. Ty👍
Incredible breakdown, thanks Jack.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching them stick it to Barry Bonds and the Giants.
Now in hindsight, Dusty Baker has his Manager ring with Houston. I find that to be bittersweet.
I needed this so much 😭
"Everyone was rooting for those Angels"
Speak for yourself mate, that 02 team ripped my heart out as a Giants fan.
Though with time I can say I appreciate them. They remind me of a couple of the 2010s Giants world series winners, squads with a lot of talent but little in the way of bona fide superstars destined for the Hall of Fame.
Tim Salmon managing to somehow never make an All-Star team will forever be weird to me. Like how???
Simple. He was always a slow starter, put up average numbers the first half of the season (when All Star votes are tabulated), then he heated up in the 2nd half. They used to say, "As the weather got warmer, so did Salmon."
Awesome video Mr. Olive, keep it up
Back then they had a very Good front Office, Farm System, Couching Staff... But mostly a better GM and Farm System is a Big main problem... They don't have that Now...
God it’s tough being an Angels fan 😢
I’ve been an Angels fan for ever it seems like. And I remember that magical 2002 season. We had no business beating the New York Yankees and no business beating Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants. But we did! I remember a Red Sox player remark: “I don’t see no banners up there.” Well now we got one 😂
2002 playoffs Troy Glaus was a cheat code.
I'm a simple man. I see rally monkey. I click
Man. I forgot about Garrett Anderson and Brad Fullmer. I also didn't know that Benji Gil and Alex Ochoa were still in the league in 2002.
I have given you a hard time for being a hater in the past, but this makes up for it. Thanks, Jolly. ❤
God this year was so much fun.
As a Mariners fan... this gives me hope
Please, my angels needs to win the World Series
I remember this series specifically for Scott Spiezio destroying a guitar in a pregame show. The mind of a child. I wonder if that footage still exists 😂.
spiezio was a wild man. i came home to my apt once a few years back and my roommate had a small party going. lo and behold, there was spiezio dancing in my living room. i was like wtf lol he ended up biting the neck off a beer bottle and chewing the glass and bleeding all over my carpet. he's better now tho.
Really enjoy the videos - when you put the pitcher season stat lines in there, do you think you might be able to include FIP?
Everyone knows they won because Joseph Gordon-Levitt wished for angels to help them, they made a documentary about it and everything
