The Rocky Mountain Way

  • The Nolan Arenado trade is many things: It symbolizes a franchise nadir for the Rockies, it has broken a fanbase, it is potentially franchise-killing, and it was completely inevitable. The impasse between Arenado and Rockies management has been slowly growing over the past few years and push finally came to shove.
The return is terrible for Colorado, but they had no leverage. And no one feels bad for them since it's their own damn fault for it. Years of poor personnel decisions and a focus on short-term gains undid them in the end.
This video will try to explain the situation in a rather roundabout way. Yes, that is Portal and Half-Life music you are hearing in the background.

I am a long time Rockies fan, and... it feels hopeless. In a way it never has. In the past, even during those doldrum years of 2011-2015, it still felt like there was a chance. We had 2007 as a good memory, and were competitive in other years. And why this one hurts the most? We were good. We had a real chance. Back to back playoffs. Pushed the mighty Dodgers to game 163 even. Multiple superstars, a rising pitching core. All we freaking needed was a little bit more. But now...
It's gonna be years. Unless an unholy amount of luck comes our way. Like, 10 years kind of wait minimum. Until all the waste and bad decisions finally flush out and we somehow strike a vein of great players. This is not easy for me to admit. I am, or at least was, the eternal optimist. But it is harder now to do that than ever, and I really mean that. No year feels more hopeless than this one.

IMO owners that have no interest in winning championships should sell their team. A sports team is a business but there HAS to be more to running a successful team than just being profitable. If you've no desire to WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS then why do you own the team? Invest in another business and let someone else with the money and desire to do so have the team. Hell, if I were a city manager I might even make it a clause in their lease- either spend to an agreed upon league median in terms of payroll or lose the lease on the stadium. The paycheck of a single player should not be greater than the payroll of some entire teams...

    • @LudaChez
      @LudaChez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

That's why there needs to be a salary FLOOR. There should be some sort of algorithm that predicts what minimum a team can spend. It's not fair to say every team has to spend 140 million or something but every team should be capable of spending around 100. Certain areas maybe 80. Other places should be higher like a LA and NY (which don't have issues spending anyway but you have to give it to everyone so maybe they have to spend 140). And depending on what you make it goes higher. So my team the Marlins for instance start them at 80 (it's at around 60 now entering 2021 season). If the team gets better and revenue goes up so does your floor. Let's say 2021 is very profitable. Now it's 90. Then 100. Then it can stay somewhere there. Don't like it? Sell the team.
In a league where the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Astros and such have to retool their teams to AVOID SPENDING TOO MUCH then why should other teams be allowed to spend 30 million when the "cap" is like 210? It's ridiculous

The problem is that fans WILL still go to the games. Coors Field is a beautiful park with beautiful sunsets where you go to see beautiful hits. Casual Rockies fans, thousands of them, fill up the seats because going to a baseball game in Colorado is a good way to spend an afternoon. Monfort is going to keep making money as long as he fields a decent-ish team. This has been the reality in Denver for almost 30 years and it's not changing anytime soon. The Rockies have never won a World Series game, haven't won a playoff game other than one Wild Card matchup since 2009, and they've never won the division. But, Rockies fans that grew up going to Coors Field love the team and the money keeps flowing in.

I usually don't comment on TH-cam much, but this is honestly heartbreaking for me. I have been a Rockies fan since I moved to Colorado almost 18 years ago. I went to my first baseball game 2 weeks after we moved here, it was the Rockies vs. the Dodgers, I don't remember the score but the Rockies won. Since then I have rooted for the Rockies. I remember in 2007 going to both NLCS games at Coors Field and watching them win their only NLCS title ever. I even went one World Series game, we lost of course, but I still rooted for them. I have remained a Rockies fan through it all, years of bad seasons, Holiday being traded, Jiménez being traded, Tulo being traded. The Arenado trade though is finally what has broken me. I used to wear my Rockies hat with pride despite all of tough seasons, but now its just a grim reminder that the Rockies will just be bottom feeders for god knows how long now. We wasted the carrier of so many stars, Helton, Walker, Jiménez, Tulo, Gonzalez more I'm forgetting about. At least Holiday went and won some rings. So I really don't know what to feel, I still love the Rockies, but this is even more demoralizing the being swept in the World Series. I'm surprised the Rockies haven't got a legacy of failure because that is our entire history is failure. Hopefully things will turn around soon, but I really don't feel that it will. The management is just sitting around not doing anything insisting we have a talented team, well a talented team doesn't end up near the bottom almost every year. A talented team doesn't finish below .500 on a consistent basis. in the past 10 years, we have gone to the playoffs 3 times, that is it. The Rockies have talented players, but we have so many gaping holes in our roster that it doesn't look promising anytime soon.

I've seen quite a few Rockies fans on twitter saying they're gonna start following the Cardinals since Arenado is now there. I feel bad for Rockies fans, or whatever is left of that fanbase now.

It's so hard to be a rockies fan sometimes. On one hand, you have the best minor league teams on hand, and the prospects are coming up are playing well. But on the other hand, you are losing players like crazy. With story, lemahieu, arenado, Dahl, and others gone, it seems hopeless. Now, we trade fan favorite Joe for a bullpen arm (which we need but really had to be joe?!), and want to trade cj cron, who led the nl on homers for half a season, and Brendan Rodgers, fresh off a gold glove, for what? Trejo, toglia, and montero all need more time to develop in minors/majors, before shoving them in as starters with barely any league experience. Trejo isn't ready to start, same for montero, and toglia needs a bit more AAA time, or back up an aging blackmon as RF. Also please don't make blackmon a dh, he's still a good defender

to be fair that 2007 Sox team was pretty epic. Ortiz and Manny still together, youk, Pedroia, Ellsbury, and the best year Mike Lowell ever had. On the mound, Schilling's last hurrah and the rise of Jon Lester. And of course, Papelbon at his most overpowering manning the end of the bullpen with the sneaky southpaw Hideki Okajima setting him up.

You could make this video about the Clevaland Indians as well with trading Lindor. Just like we traded or let go in Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez, Kenny Lofton, Omar Vizquel, CC Sabathia , Cliff Lee, Victor Martinez.
Draft well, Develop great players, trade or let go when ready for big pay day. Repeat. It’s so frustrating, because we can never have a face of the franchise because they always have to leave at some point😩

How does any one man have this much in-depth knowledge of every franchise in every pro sport? It's kinda depressing tbh. Dude could prob have 2, 3, 4 advanced degrees w the time invested in this info.

Rockies have been, and always will be nothing with Monfort owning the team. You have to either be smart or have deep pockets to have a good baseball team, and the Rockies are perpetually dumb and cheap. I’m fed up as a fan, and as much as I have missed going to the ballpark what with COVID I don’t see myself supporting this team until Monfort is gone. Great video Tree

Not gonna lie, I hate how hard Colorado has fallen. 2017/18 were amazing for the NL West as both Dodgers, D-backs and Rockies were in a dogfight for first. The tension was great for baseball. Now to see the Rockies window slammed shut like this is just sad.

A team that prefers cheap solutions to long term development? Sounds to me that the Rockies management might have pulled a Ballard on the Rockies fans. Now fans in Denver might start developing the same kind of feelings towards their team as the Maple Leafs did when Harold Ballard was still alive.
