Fitting the Intercooler & Turbo Cold Side Pipes

    Now that the engine and transmission have been mounted in the car, it's time to start fitting things together. I decided to start with the cold side of the turbo.
    In this video I'll show you how I fitted the intercooler and cold side pipes to the turbo system in my fox body. They don't give you mounting brackets so you have to make your own. I show how I made mine in this video.
    I also go over some of the changes I'm making to the turbo system so that it works with my carbureted application. There will be another video about some of the changes I had to make to the system to get that to work. For the most part this video covers the mounting of the intercooler.
    Don't worry, I'm going back later to paint the brackets I made. All I was concerned about in this video was getting them made so that they worked.

      That is a great idea. Jay could do well to bring at least a few of these types of builds through Jay Leno's Garage. While I am not following any other builds of this type on TH-cam, there is likely a few more out there. It would be good for both Jay's and the builder's channels. ...This is going to be a really cool "sleeper" when it is all done.

    a little tip for you to help you get your bends exactly where you want them just heat the point that it is touching the vice or whatever you're trying to bend over/around then it always starts to bend in that spot which makes getting the bend bang on.

    Hey Eric, awesome work on all you videos and projects
    I like how you let people know even you still learn something new every day, as you teach us . I think the top tubing that goes into the carb adapter might fit if you put the welded 90 angle into the fenderwell hole and swoop up and swoop around the turbo if you rotate the tubing 180 degrees. I have helped a friend of mine that was working on his tubing and he was getting ready to cut up the tubing, but, I brought it to the car "the wrong way" and it fit. He was happy for it to fit, pissed that he didn't see it for an hour wrestling with it. # FAIRMONTS RULE

      Not only will it help hide it, but the guys over at MCM also found cooling performance was improved when they were spray painted black! Not kidding!

    • @mistakesweremade274
      @mistakesweremade274 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Colin Stuart It improved radiation not convection. Radiation helps when the car is stationary but what you really want is convection as the air passes through it when you're on boost, which it did worse after it was painted (you can check out engineering explained video on it). I don't think the loss in performance is nearly as much as how much the intercooler is covered by the bumper. I'd recommend painting the bumper black and maybe cut some speed holes in a nice patter of course to help with air flow, but it won't look as stock though. Personally I like blacked trim because of the Buick GNX, one of the few cars that look good murdered out.

      MightyCarMods also tested that black IC is better than the shiny one.

    • @WhoThisGuy515
      @WhoThisGuy515 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If he paints it black he might as well remove it because he would block airflow and give the intercooler an insulation layer which would greatly reduce the cooling efficiency. Either cut holes in the bumper or add a meth injection system to help keep things cool.

    get a plastic lower valence like you'd find on a 90's chevy pickup, drill 2 oval speed holes (4"x2-2.5") directly in front of the intercooler, fill the space with a fine steel mesh painted black to avoid total see though-ness, then install an intercooler sprayer. or you can make one, get a set of cheap windshield sprayer nozzles and a windshield fluid reservoir with a built in pump, then wire it to a toggle switch. or a momentary switch behind the gas pedal, similar to a nitrous set up, so at a certain throttle input it starts spraying. or go with meth injection. all of these options should provide plenty of cooling.

    a good solution is a water to air intercooler. it will simplify your piping but require a reservoir and a small heat exchanger in front of the rad, like if you had ac. and a water pump and lines.

  • @dicktooth
    @dicktooth 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    id flip the intercooler upside down and see if i could route the piping behind the bumper above the bumper mounts and below the lights . the would hide the pipes . pass side piping probably would be easy to route drivers a little more tricky but worth it in the end

    Have you thought about some kind of intake system for the intercooler? You could fashion it into the bumper, (specifically, two small vertical slits where the black bits stick out the front) or maybe just a small lip underneath that angles up, kinda like a mini wing. The second option would also give a smidge more downforce... Oh and if you really want to go stealthy, paint the intercooler and piping black 😎

    could you cut a small hole in the bumper that help with air flow and then use wire mesh to cover it and blend it back in?

  • @dufftime

    eric the smith guy! that was actually very impressive.. not that i know anything about metalsmithing. you should make a sword next, and make sure you dunk the hot metal into a barrel of water for awesome steam footage.

    I love what you have built. Shame no cars like this made it to the UK. Just thinking those ic pipe are awfully long. How about a charge cooler installing to reduce the inlet tract distance? Keep up the outstandingly good videos.

    Cut a 4"x10" hole in the middle of the bumper and cover it with a chrome mesh. Weld some steel up on the back to get some strength back. Get some air flow in that intercooler.

  • @Frrlas
    @Frrlas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    As far I know/heard the aitflow won't do a notisable diffrence if it hangs out more or less. In other words it will be just fine, and just leave it where it hangs, hidden behind the bumper :)
    Sugestion is to paint the intrecooler black and hide it behind a black net ;)

    I'd would spray the intercooler & intercooler pipes with wrinkle black spray paint for a stealth factory look.

    Chrome mesh in a cut out on that bumper to help cooling, perhaps a future option?

  • @H3XLYBETA
    @H3XLYBETA 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice build so far! How do you plan to tackle the issue of the turbine housing touching that steel piping on the left hand side of the engine bay? Pretty sure that will contribute to heat soak, affecting the density of the air inside that pipe.

    another idea for the intercooler mounts . i thinking maybe you could use radiator mounts and weld em to the frame.

  • @supercoupe6288
    @supercoupe6288 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    hey there Eric, maybe a air dam on the front might channel air to the inner-cooler and maybe break out your mig welder and fill the wrong hole location in the bottom bracket it might get weak and break

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I seriously doubt it will break. There are 3 more attachment points after all. I also don't think airflow will be a problem. Keep in mind since I'm running a carburetor that it cools the incoming air charge even more when it mixes with the fuel before going into the cylinder. Sometimes up to 100º. In fact, on many turbo carb applications they don't even run an intercooler.

    • @shalnks
      @shalnks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But colder air is denser, so more air into the cylinders. There's a lot going on under the bonnet and any improvement to cooling regardless will improve the efficiency.

  • @comethiburs2326
    @comethiburs2326 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey eric, ever though about a V mount for the intercooler? with some ducting you can compensate for the reduced cooling surface. piping would be shorter too. problem might be having to replace the front crossmember with tubes. the advantage? you'd make an use of the hood scoop this thing will need. and it would be the world's first V-mounted ford fairmont.

  • @ken3marcus

    For airflow, I say oval holes in the bumper with black grating

    you can make a die out of angle iron for your shop press that makes bending 90 degree brackets alot easier, might even be able to make a video about fabbing up some home made die's for your press :]
    Just an idea

  • @markscheurich2196
    @markscheurich2196 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Curious, won't the Steele hitting the aluminum make a hole when it vibrates? It seems the bends being farther away and not hitting the inter cooler would be a better option.
