  • Previous video in the series: • Fitting the Intercoole...
In this installment I work on installing the reverse rotation water pump, the carburetor, the alternator, heater hose connections, and I attempt to install the AC compressor. Since none of this fits into a nice neat little video I decided to call this a "Final Fitting" video.
This is the part of the build that my seem less than glamorous, but it's just as important as everything else. If you don't have all these smaller systems working together, you're not going to get very far.
Anyway, I'm hoping the tips you see in this video are helpful to you not only with your project car, but also with your other projects. How effective you are often comes down to your approach, and your tools come to think of it. Either way I wish you good luck and hope that you enjoy watching my video.

Love that we get to see the "little" things. You don't get to see things like this. Usually on shows you see the motor getting lowered in, then "presto" the car is done. Thanks for showing your planning, fitting, building and frustrations.

I agree, the last 10% is the worst. But it's the most crucial and no way to avoid it. Doing a 97 Eagle Talon 420A non turbo build right now ( for the second time because I thought the first time I could cut corners and get away with the then current hardware.... I was dead wrong and 3k miles later, I'm where I'm at currently). Took me a while to track down the correct engine block to cylinder head dowels that would fit, ended up having to fabricate my own, but they work. In short though, I personally feel your pain, but when it's done, you're able to look at your build and tell the nay sayers, least mine is built, not bought. Plus, it's yours and no bank can take it from you. Really enjoying all of your videos Eric, some make my life tons easier. Keep up the great work!

very true. started chasing down a p0300 check engine light ive had for well over a year since the last time a mechanic had touched it. no diagnostic technique i know about could shed any light on it, as it was giving me p0300 and p0301/303/305 (all of bank 1) on a V6. and that same banks fuel trims where showing like -15% at idle, but normal at higher RPM. i swapped injectors around, no change. looked for vac or exhaust leaks around that cylinder bank, nada. So then the part throwing started. all new ignition components, even down to the coil packs (they were old and literally fell apart in my hand just trying to take them off, so it was time anyway). cleaned IAC. installed new fuel filter, fuel regulator, PCV, was about to drop in a new fuel pump when a buddy at work was like "sounds like the timing is off". so, i popped the top timing covers off, hand rotated the engine over till the marks lined up, and son of a bitch if the bank 1 exhaust cam (DOHC engine) wasn't off time by 1 belt tooth. Spent around 500 bucks changing parts when all i needed to do was realign the timing belt, meaning that the mechanic that had actually replaced the belt previously (less than 10k miles ago) had actually not aligned the timing right and ive been spitting fuel down into my cat for over a year now.

Tip for installing o-rings...don't roll them on. Slide them on and usually you need to run a flat tip, small screwdriver on the inside to "unroll" the o-ring. This does two things:
    1. Keeps them on and not popping off.
    2. Prevent them from pinching when installing parts on or around the o-ring.
Lots of o-ring experience in tight spaces...dairy manufacturing experience. 😁

I can't count the number of times that I've stopped to help people in fords (usually f-150's) on the side of the road or stuck in a parking lot either with a dead battery, trashed starter, or their battery cables disconnected because they replaced the external solenoid for the starter and it fuses closed. I don't understand why the aftermarket ones fail so quickly or so often, but it's absolutely something I can't help but chuckle at every time.

Last couple days I've been working on the wifey's '86 Grand Marquis, replacing the timing chain set and timing cover gaskets. I noticed the new water pump (GMB brand) is also missing the 2 center bolt holes. It's also an aluminum housing vs. cast iron of the old one - the aluminum one has structural ribs right where those bolts would go - I think this is why they eliminated them. I wasn't too crazy about that idea either, since there's now more potential for leaks there. I guess we'll both find out around the same time on that ...

Geez that is tedious! Great work with that alternator though! As for the A.C., Make a custom bracket for the rear mounts coming from the head. I don't know how comfortable you are with it but it would be better than going further into that water pump. It would make no sense putting it to the body as your engine will turn as you rev it. I don't see many options but then again I cant see it too well. Keep up the good work Eric!

596 horsepower, Eric make sure you put one of those hooks that go on your throttle pedal in case the throttle were ever to get stuck you would just have to rotate your foot on your heel to unstick it and maybe one of those orange t kill switches on the dash.... Just a little bit of safety!..

Eric, fuel injected 5.0 mustangs have a steel line that runs across the intake for the heater lines that is what you need to solve the problem the short hoses in your kit are meant for that hope this helps BTW it works great on a victor Jr ask how I know

I'm still baffled people get annoyed by things like drilling the alternator, they must have never done a job like this, that's what it's what it's all about, modifying something to make it work for your application..

Sometimes even regular direct replacement parts need some modifications. I don't come across this often, but it happens. In a custom build, relocating stuff, etc. it has to happen.

This reminds me how i swapped A front wheel drive lada engine in my classic 2106 lada. Had to custom make all the coolant plumbing. after i was done the engine bay was so stuffed it resembled nothing of the easy access of the previous engine.

hey bud, your distributor is on the wrong end of the engine :))))
probably should have went 160/170 thermostat, unless you plan on winter driving it, more leeway for timing/boost.
brass 45 or 90 for the heater hose fitting

  • @draggonhedd

Hey Eric, Why not thread a 90 degree fitting in place of that brass fitting or that heater hose you're having problems with? That way you can point it down and around the alternator.

Does that plug on the intake next to the distributor enter the water passage? If so, you can move the nipple from the water pump to that location.

What's most frustrating is how many things you're "not worried about at the moment" that should be taken care of as they arise. Seems like after the first 50 "not worried about at the moment" items that cause extra delay and more difficult work shortly down the line, most folks would start taking the extra little bit of time to take care of them as they come. I mean, one example: I'm not worried about moving the starter solenoid right now, maybe I'll get around to it some other day; then decides to go ahead and relocate, now working in a tight space between the turbo piping jammed in around it and the fender... Or how I assume the dyno harmonic balancer was a "meh I'll swap it later" thing, but you leave it on while trying to do fitment on the intercooler and piping right through that area? Seems like the fitment process, for me anyway, goes a lot smoother when I have all the interacting components installed, all the final install pieces not the test pieces, so that I can actually see what goes where and how they will coincide before I go through the trouble of fabricating mounts and brackets or drilling holes. I like the project, I understand the frustrations of doing custom work for sure, but SLOW DOWN and stop putting shit off until later when it's right there to solve NOW. Do it right the first time and you won't have to tear it apart and figure it out later. Also, if you're going to try to fabricate, get a damn square, and start measuring things.
