  • This is the long awaited review of the Ultra Plush Pillowtop Stearns & Foster King mattress, after 90-days of use.
    This is an unaffiliated review. Just honest feedback.
    I compare the mattress to the Saatva Classic 14.5" Plush Soft mattress reviewed here:
    • Saatva Classic Review ...
    You'll find a discussion of the mattress differences, the research and purchasing differences, and a direct 1-to-1 comparison.
    PLUS: I give both mattresses letter grades! Woo!!

    12/2021 MattFirm Sterns&Foster Cassatt Ultra Plush EPT Queen for $2,500. Mid-60 yo's side sleepers 240/170#. We originally ordered the Plush but due to a mix-up we got the Ultra Plush. We are very happy with it. Rotate it every 6-8 months. Love the coiled edge support as I sleep on the edge. Our hip and shoulder arthritis comes and goes, but not due to the mattress as this happens in vacations also. Acetamidine PM to the rescue. Obviously the center remains less used and hence is not as depressed. After 3 years, the top layers recover a good 90% plus after a full nights sleep. We use an adjustable base so a bit more flexing stress on the bed, but hasn't impacted the sleep quality. But now you can't find Ultra Plush anymore, and only Firm in Lux Estate EPT. Plush avail in the lower Estate series. What gives?

    Thank you for the straightforward review! I've been searching for the right mattress for about a year. I'm a side sleeper with mid-back pain. The Saatva is on just about every best of list, so I thought it would be the one for me, but I found it super stiff just like you did. Even with a topper, I couldn't take it. Now, I'm on the Wink bed which is also on a lot of best of lists, but even though it's a smidge softer than the Saatva, it will be going back too, as I have a lot of pressure points on it. Now, I'm only looking at mattresses I can lay on first, and the Cassatt feels soooo good in the store. It's more expensive, so I'm really weighing it. If I get it, will update comment - comments really help me, so I hope this helps someone!

      @1MJ981 I’m sorry to be replying so late! I missed the email somehow. I did have the plush soft Saatva and the “softer” Wink bed. Neither of them were soft enough for me. My friend has the luxury firm Saatva, and I really couldn’t tell much difference between his mattress and mine. I did end up buying the Stearns and Foster Cassatt plush pillowtop (I got a good deal on a floor model sale), and I’m happy with it. I don’t think any mattress is going to solve my back issues unfortunately, but I sleep well on this one. It’s got a great amount of cushioning, but my partner who doesn’t likes things as soft as I do says it’s not too soft. I hope you find or have found something great for you!

    Thank you for your real review. I just spent so much money.. my first real mattress. I'm a side sleeper. Hips, side of body, and shoulders are always sore now that I'm older Because most mattresses are too firm. I need to melt in the mattress, I need nothing firm based on my sleeping position. Soft and supportive is a type of mattress. Can't wait for them to deliver it.

    I decided to go with a Stearns & Foster, The Studio model. I have been trying to find a bed that will give me lower back support. Went from latex, to a purple, to an Intellibed, and not one gave me the support I am looking for. The Intellibed soft was a big mistake, I lay on this bed and feel the pain right away from lower back pain after having it for two years, today I am now going to try the Stearns & Foster Studio. My bed is a Twin XL does not mean a get a better price. I am praying tonight I will feel the support, the new bed will be a Medium Firm. Bought at Mattress Firm. Get 120 days to test it out. God Bless

    Great video Ty. We’ve been researching mattresses for weeks, (never knew there were so many mattress manufacturers) was considering buying the Saatva Plush and / or DreamCloud mattress but after your video changed our mind. Looking for “ultra plush” the softest on the market & your video convinced us to find a retail store to give Cassatt a try.
    We wish you had mentioned the height of the mattress & IF it can be used on an adjustable frame. We are interested in the Saatva Lineal Adjustable Base for $2400 which is NOT returnable. While there are many adjustable bases Saatva is luxury & rated well.
    Do you know if the Cassatt mattress can be used on the Saatva Lineal adjustable base because the height / flexibility matters. Kudos for video on a Plush Mattress!

    • @chuckjackson4487
      @chuckjackson4487  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks! I can help a little with some of those questions. I should have mentioned in the video, that the Cassatt Ultra Plush is actually 16" think and the only one in that product line of that thickness. The other pillow tops at 15" and the non-pillow tops are even thinner. The S&F site shows this mattress on an adjustable base, but the S&F website is void of usable info.
      When I was searching for a site that carried the mattress, I stumbled onto LivingSpace.com (for the store Living Spaces which has popped up in a lot of US metro areas in recent years). On that site, you can search for mattresses by brand that can be used on an adjustable base - this Cassatt Ultra-Plush DOES pop up in that search. Those two data points confirms to me that it can be used on an adjustable base.
      That said, I am not able to confirm if the Saatva Lineal could be used, but when I look at pictures of the Lineal and the S&F adjustable base, they look almost identical in where the pivot points are, so my instinct tells me it should work - but being non-refundable would scare me a bit. Also, the Lineal weight limit is 850 lbs., the Cassatt King Ultra-Plush weighs 208 lbs., leaving you with 602 lbs. to play with. I can't find anything on the Lineal regarding mattress thickness, only that it works with any mattress built to be used with an adjustable, and the Cassatt appears to be one. The Lineal documentation says it works best with their 11.5" mattresses, that makes sense since thinner allows for more range in adjusting - I don't think that is an indictment on any maximum thickness.
      Good luck!

    Chuck , now that you've had the mattress for a few months how do you find it in terms of coolness i.e. heat retention. This is a mattresse with some memory foam in it which is notorious for retaining body heat. Plus the fact that it is ultra plush and envelops more.
    Also , how do you find the mattress in terms of being able to change positions ...does the plushness inhibit moving freely ?

    • @chuckjackson4487
      @chuckjackson4487  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good questions. We are now 6 months in and I can say this about the heat: The heat is very well distributed. What I mean by that is, on my son's memory foam mattress, which used to be a guest room mattress, it gets hot and stays hot in the place you are laying, and stays cool to the touch everywhere. This S&F seems to radiate that body heat further out, so there is more of a gradient in heat as you move further from your original spot. Also, I sleep super hot, and I have not had a single night where my body temperature woke me up since getting it. That used to happen a few times a month with the old S&F we replaced. Can't say for sure why, but I suspect the materials are layered in a way to work like Under Armour, or sweat-wicking clothing. As I heat up, the mattress just pulls the heat away. At least that's what I "feel" like is happening.
      6 months in and I don't find much in the way of movement restriction. In the first few weeks, I felt like a new hump was growing, but honestly, it is such a minor hump, that the occasional snuggle session on the hump flattens this bad boy out.

      @@chuckjackson4487 Hi Chuck, thanks again for some very valuable info. The problem I face now is can't get the Cassat mattress where i am in Canada. The way S&F cleverly does it , in the usa too it seems, is that EACH f'n store or chain of stores has different names for their S&F mattresses . That way you cannot price compare or see reviews since the Crestone will have different name whether you buy it at the Hudson Bay or at Sleep Country. There oughta be a law against that.

      Hi Gina! I tried the plush soft Saatva, and it wasn’t at all soft enough for me. I even contacted the company to see if they mistakenly sent me the firm option. I know mattresses are subjective, but I don’t see how the Saatva is on so many “best of” lists for back pain. I have a lot of back and shoulder pain too. I ended up getting a really good deal on a Stearns and Foster because a local mattress store was selling the floor model. That seems to happen a lot in my area, so maybe that’s something to check out. Of course that meant I couldn’t return it, but the store said that if I were really unhappy to let them know, and they’d see what they could do. Luckily, I’m happy with it. Correction to what was presented in this video. Stearns and Foster can be purchased on-line. We just put an order in for the Cassatt plush pillow-top at US-Mattress website who will deliver your mattress at no cost and offers set up and take away of your old mattress also at no additional cost. There may be other internet retailers, but these folks were the ones who happened to offer the best pricing for me.
    It would be great to do a side-by-side review/comparison between the SF Ultra Plush and Plush pillow-top. I see that the comfort level for the Plush was a tad higher than the ultra-plus. The memory foam and other foam thickness appears to differ between the two.
    Finally, Chuck - regarding your 1am wake-up calls. Get yourself supplemented on Prostate SR and also get Pumpkin-seed oil capsules. The problems with Stearns and Foster come out especially after a couple years , not after 90 days . Many reviews and reliable sites discuss this. Problems with durability and sagging...i took note of what you said at 25:25 re:pitting , already. Anyways, would be cool if you could give a follow-up after 12-18-24 mths. I was gonna put out $4000 a couple days ago for S&F Crestone in Canada but decided to read some sites like Sleep Like the Dead etc...wow lowest satisfaction scale... 62%. A store in Mtl. tells me he hasn.t stocked SF
    3-4 yrs. becuz quality down. Yes, the name S&F has been around since 1842 or something but it's been bought over by TempurSealy for a while now. This mattress has a considerable amount of memory foam now. Take note : memory foam has only been around since the 60's and not in mattresses for quite after the 60's. What did Stearns and Foster have in their mattresses before that ? Probably natural products like wool, horsehair , alpaca etc. like the the really expensive mattresses out there are still doing (Hypnos, Glencraft etc...)

    • @chuckjackson4487
      @chuckjackson4487  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can say this, 6 months in, that initial pitting/sagging stopped almost immediately - I was really surprised honestly. It's almost like buying a new pair of jeans (not stretchy jeans) and they conform a little and stay that way long term.
      Some of what you share makes me wonder how much region plays into the research process and the sales stock. Believe it or not, I have never even heard of sleeplikethedead.com - so I looked it up directly and took a look. It's a busy site, so maybe this exists, but I couldn't find it. I would love to know what the sample size is for each of the different categories and brands. A little transparency on that would be helpful in backing up their seemingly "by the data" approach. But, yeah, had I seen this site, I probably would have been more hesitant than I was. But as example, Saatva comes in at 81 vs. the S&F 62, but is you summarize the lowest rating areas, S&F is big, heavy, people sink into it, and can't get out - otherwise it is all B's and up. Saatva on the other hand is heavy, has poor marketing materials, and real reviews are hard to come by.
      Honestly, I would have though poor marketing and hidden reviews would have been a S&F low rating, not Saatva. Shows what I know...

      Tempur-pedic lasts longer, according to my training (15-20 years), whereas S&F should last 10-12. That’s what they claim. I don’t know how accurate that is.

      Three years ago I finally replaced my Stearns and Foster Supreme Correct Comfort. It was 40 years old. Had 4 twin sizes. bought at different times. but slept on only one. Extremely firm which is what I love, despite being mostly a side sleeper. Probably should have gotten rid of it after 35 years, purchased in early 80's. Firmest mattress on market then and set (with box spring--twin) was in 1981? 1982? $800. But I bought them all at different dates at Macy's Furniture CLearance Outlet on Long Island. LET THAT SINK IN 40 YEARS, OK, LET'S BE REAL AND SAY 35). That was the quality back then. I have no idea what warranty was , since I purchased at the clearance center and never interacted with the company. Btw, S & F no longer makes twin, rather only twin XL. I also just read that they were bought by another well known brand?? forgot, think Sealys posturepedic., few years ago.
      Replaced with a Saatva Classic, Firm, which is the firmest of the classics despite confusing nomenclature, It is rated 8 for firmness. Not as firm. and after 3+ years some sagging in the middle. Can't be flipped. I am (or was) normal weight approx 130 most of those years.
      To be clear I like everything about Saatva, it is a quality mattress, thinking of checking out the Brooklyn Bedding Plank, but per videos, looks like it depresses with pressure. I want a mattress that I lie on top of.

      In hindsight, I recall having a similar impression, but I think it was just the memory foam stiffness. Not 10 minutes into laying on it did I start feeling it conform and now that we are nearly a year in, I can say, I never wake up with pains because it is too firm, but the areas that never get use, the pillowtop still has a bit if stiffness. I think the key here is that everything below the pillowtop, at least in our case, is what makes the mattress soft. It feels like the whole mattress gives, whereas many others I have slept on feel like the pillowtop gives, but the rest of the mattress won't budge. I hope it works out for you!

      When I was searching for it, I found that S&F doesn't have a return policy (because you can't buy directly from them). The return policy will be dependent on the retailer. I can say, I bought from a NY located regional furniture store Raymour and Flannigan - I got a 45 day return period, but only if I used a mattress cover.
      In AZ (I spent 15 years there and just came back to NY in 2018), if memory serves, Mattress Firm has one of the better policies, but it is for exchange only I believe and you have to keep it 21 days (but they give you up to 120 to exchange). I hear rumor Living Spaces carry this line of S&F, but I can't validate it. Allegedly they have a decent return/exchange policy.

The mattress I have now is pretty old and it just kills me. I have a lot of pain and trouble sleeping. I'm looking for a very soft mattress thaf is adjustable and has an adjustable base. I've been looking at the Saatva Solaire mattress with the adjustable base. Do you know anything about that one or anyone that's tried it? One thing that bothers me is that the adjustable base isn't returnable like the mattress. I'm going to have to check out the one you bought at a mattress store as an alternative also. I'm just sick of not being able to sleep well and being in a lot more pain because of the old mattress I have, so I need to figure something out. How is the Stearns & Foster as far as coolness / breathability? Do you know if it can be purchased with an adjustable base / extra features?

    Toppers
    Pillow or Euro
    However, you also have a tight top. Meaning there is no topper at all.
    Mattress smell
    Saatva is new construction when ordered.
    Sterns and foster are pre- manufactured.
    Which allows more time for off gassing.
    Question
    I thought you had stated you already had a base or foundation that reduced down from a king to a queen tgey for did not purchase a new one.
    Foundation or boxspring is important to the type of mattress.
    I think size difference does come into play as well due to distribution of weight.

But the review will focus on the minimal sagging (of course, I am 230 lbs, so my side is a little more worn than my wife's, but it hasn't played any role in decreasing the support and comfort), the still consistent softness of both materials and support mechanism, and the lack of pain in the morning. A year in, there is a little "pitting" on my side (250 lbs.), but only noticeable when you are evaluating for it, otherwise, don't even notice. Would make the purchase again. On a side note, through my business, I am looking to procure some corporate housing for my staff in a couple different states and I plan to outfit all of them with these mattresses (maybe not ultra plush, but the next step or two firmer - medium maybe). I feel the sleep one would get is worth buying these instead of junk - it is after all about productivity and a good night sleep while traveling is good for that.

    I done a lot of homework and tried Dreamcloud, Kingsdown, Temperpidic, and yes all the series of Stearns and Foster. I would not compare this to a Saatva. They really not even close quality and category. Even if they have inner springs and memory firm. I would compare SF to Kingsdown or Airloom. can tell you one thing you got wrong is the mircro coils aren't on all the Cassett or Lux estate editions. It's only added to the Lux estate hybrid Pollock edition. So your plush PT has just more of that HD memory form vs say the plush in regular Rockwell estate version. And it has the Casset has the nice Velvet handle touches, the better and more core coil alignments etc. But not all has micro coils. The SF has now updated their website to show this and all the missing cross sections since your review. I don't know if you a side sleeper but I would not get a Plush PT of you are combo sleeper like myself. I found that the Casset is good for me who is side sleeper and back. My wife weight is light so she likes it firm so the firm PT Casset was good compromise for us. Btw, more plush doesn't equates to more comfort level. We can afford the Reserve but felt that woild be too mushmellow of a bed thay won't give the proper support we need. Also the more you weigh, sometimes the beds does a better support even in a medium firm which could feel better vs going all plush which loses the support. I would not go with Saatva. They are online only for a reason. They are like Dreamcloud on marketing heavy but over time, their walls and material will break easy. Sagging is what all mattresses do over time. A new bed will take time to break in like new shoes. Sometimes more than a year. I don't expect ten years on a bed. I like to get a good 5 to 6 years max. Bed really should not be kept over ten years. Like a pillow, you don't wash them, so your want to continue with something you lay down each night after a decade?

      The S&F site leaves a lot to be desired. That said, I didn't find any reports that would make me think they used materials that are out of line in the industry. You can find their CPSIA certificate showing the codes of the products they use and that they pass flammability tests - although lots of things we shouldn't be rolling around on would pass - and being honest, I don't know how to track those products down. The mattress tag does include all the ingredients, but I'm not a chemist, so I'm not confident what many of the ingredients are. That said, everything else in we ingest or use is already killing us to some level, at least this mattress will give me a comfortable death.

    Hi! is it hard to move in the bed bcuz of the softness? (stearn&foster)

    • @chuckjackson4487
      @chuckjackson4487  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great questions. With the new one, the softness didn't play a part in moving it around, but the weight did. The weight is substantial and me being a rather big, strong guy had my moments of trying to pivot (Friends reference) an immovable object (heavy Stearns & Foster). With a boost from the kids though, it got where we needed and the shape had not changed.
      That said, the older one we replaced, by the time we moved cross country in 2018, had a major "tacoing" issue. That one would fold in half if you looked at it wrong, which wasn't a "bad" thing for us, because the rental we had when we got to NY from AZ was an old build and a king size 16" mattress never would have made it through the narrow stairwell without folding.
      If we had bought this mattress in that rental, we would be sleeping in the living room. Also, the tacoing did not appear to negatively impact the quality of the old one, but we only had it taco twice before getting rid of it - no idea what the effect would be if it happened frequently (think twice a year for multiple years).

Still going strong? I heard online about sagging. I am only 150 lbs, 6'1" so I doubt that'll be as much of a problem for me as others. It's a queen. The bed is just for me, I'm a caregiver to my parents and I need something great to help my back. I had bought a nectar and I am returning it. Absolutely horridly inconsistent. Everything from the temperature in the room to how long you spend sleeping in it and how much you can step all over it to break it in... SO many factors, no I am not gonna science out to make do for a bed I pay 1500 bucks for that's ridiculous. People saying "Oh break them in for 3-6 months". Break them in with my body? Hopefully this gives younsome piece of mind. If I could attach a pic here, I could show how much sagging/pitting there is. To be honest, it is visible and although not huge, it would probably turn some people off. I understand though, that it is expectes when you lay a 6 foot weight on it in the same spot for 1/3 of every day for 18 months.
      The truth is, yes, there are some human size divots in mine. But nothing that worries me and nothing that changes the performance. I am double the weight of my wife and mine is clearly deeper than hers.
      All that said, I would make the purchase again in a heart beat.
      I agree with you that the idea that you need to "break it in" over months is fairly ludicrous. Beds with break in by being used. The question is, at which point did it become comfortable and how long did it last after. Mine was comfortable immediately and has lasted the 18 months I've had it.

    The Stearns & Foster pillow top ultra plush is a lumpy piece of garbage. My husband and I both sink into this bed even though we are of average height and weight. If you get too close to the edge you feel like you’re going to fall off. It has absolutely no support so every morning we wake up neck and back pain. The stitching around the bed is also uneven. On one end of the bed there is no gap between the mattress and the pillow top. On the other end of the bed there is a 2 to 3 inch gap between the mattress and the pillow top. The quality control is nonexistent on this product. This is an epic fail for Stearns & Foster.

    • @chuckjackson4487

      That sounds just awful. While that is not my experience with either this new S&F or our old one, that doesn't mean others won't have just the complete opposite experience (just like the Saatva - we HATED it, but others absolutely love it). I will say this - based on the way you describe the craftmanship, or lack thereof, I have to think you are right and got the lumpy piece of garbage that wasn't quality controlled.
      I certainly can't attest to the manufacturing QC nor that manufacturer as a company, but it sounds to me like you've got a legitimate gripe with that company that you should contact them about - maybe it's too old now and maybe it doesn't work (maybe you have and they weren't receptive), but the description alone of the uneven stitching and pillowtop construction tells me a fist-waving is due.
      I wish you luck with getting it replaced, returned, or with a new purchase is that is what happens.

      Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your efforts in making my world so much better!
