  • How do you push through the pain, and when better not?
I recently got a question from one of my rowing athletes.
In this video I explain what it takes, from my humble point of view.

Having just come back from a regatta this weekend with 3/3 last place finishes, this was timely advice!
"Failure is the norm, not the exception. Success results from failure" is going up on whiteboard in my gym that i use for motivational slogans

When my son was 10, he wants to stop swimming since he said he was too slow. And I told him that sport is non-negotiable and so I asked him to try rowing. Imagine our reactions when we were watching this video! He’s now 11 and has been rowing for more than a year now and had his share of regatta and indoor competitions here in Germany. He could relate to EVERYTHING including counting the years he has to spend in school, the fear of failure and the pain. As I am a physical therapist, I am also automatically trying to find ways to support him but finds it difficult since there are overwhelming emotions involved. And your videos have been a huge help for both of us. It helps us both understand each other and he’s more motivated than ever. We don’t know where this journey would lead us but for now, thank you for all the inputs. Your content are amazing and I wish you more and more power!!!

I really found this video useful - i want to loose weight and i even found it helpful for that, never mind rowing! It sort of woke me up. The whole "oh no, you win, i'm alright at the back" part. Thank you!

learn to move the boat better (technique) by asking your coaches what to work on and watching video, and train hard but smartly (not too many sessions, too many of the same type of sessions, etc)

How do you stop when you spiral on feelings of inadequacy

I generally like to get things off my mind by writing them down. I would have to know more about your specific situation though

Great video!!! But I guess many schoolboy rowers who made it to Henley ended up graduating from Princeton and Harvard, and have become millionaires! So I guess rowing doesn’t make you rich directly, but it can indirectly!
