Hi Aram. Many thanks for putting these great video's on youtube. As a just started very senior rower (63) I learn a lot looking (and looking again..) at your explanations. Just keep the good work.

Nice video, I’m new to rowing and was sometimes debating between rounding my shoulders for extra length and just keeping it more strong and stable with lats engaged. Now being sure that relaxed and strong is the way!

Agree with loose hands, arms and shoulders, but subscribe to full extension of elbows/ arms, and shoulder joints before pivoting from the hips and leading with hands over shins / ankles. Must get full length before any movement up the slide. Bent elbows and shoulders while rotating forward makes for a very unbalanced boat.

I found just the opposite to be true: stiff arms = stiff shoulders = high center of gravity

Just what the doctor ordered Aram...thank you...I'm stepping up the mileages with a four stroke cycle including 3 x 1 hour on the unplugged erg...feeling it without splits is heaps more fun...especially with a 7 mile paddle to look forward to. That's mondays, wednesdays, fridays. Racing the Lincoln to Boston 31 mile marathon on Sept 16th. Over 60. Tim Crooks record from 1978: 3 hours 29 minutes 18 seconds.

Amazing video, as always.... Thank you Aram ! it is unfortunate that subtitles come only in English in your videos and not in any other langage. There is nothing in France even approaching what you are offering and a lot of rowers would really benefit from localized subtitles. I hope that with the rise of AI, this feature will soon become a standard in TH-cam...

Funny,, just today I filmed myself from a 90° perspective and on the video it looks asif my shoulders slightly shrug on the drive although I have the arms "hanging" without tight grip. Not sure yet if the shoulders truely rise or if it's more the shoulder blades from the back. Or maybe even just the shirt. I'll have to investigate this further with views from different angles or even without a shirt. I'll have to concentrate which muscles actually are engaged and which way the forces go.
On the way back I often play with my fingers the way You do. And sometimesIwiggle my head in order to check that everything is loose and not tensed. regards Frank

More to my comment from yesterday ....
Due to the dynamic of the motion it was not easy to see what actually caused the shrugging, not even in slow motion. Dit it happen due to forces or was it something that I was actually doing - like anticipation of the upcoming resistance ?
For a better analysis I attached a short rope between the handle and the C2 limiting the travel to about 40cm so that only catch and early drive phase were possible. This showed no shrugging at all, despite the really hard stop.
So it's probably the momentum of the return that allows me to reach further than I should in combination with straight arms and the "hanging" attitude concentating more on loose grip than on strong shoulders.
I always straighten my arms slowly but end up in kind of "locked" position (with the intention of protecting my elbowes).
What I do now is to pretend being more "macho", making the shoulders wide and imagine I'd balance a 2kg weight pushing them down. I also straighten the arms coming more from the outside as You showed it in the video and do not straighten them as much as I did before - not bent, but not locked either. I also try to put a bit of emphasis on the outer fingers as if I wanted to rotate my hands outwards - Your "elbows down".
I do loose a few cm of length, but the shoulders look better now. Thanks Aram! Kind regards Frank
