Most kids show up to lessons with an old adult racquet that was in the garage and not used for years. They can't swing it or play with it and get discouraged quickly. Ask a parent to buy an appropriate racquet and they respond well we want to see if they like tennis or not first. Well, they won't like it with the club you gave them to use! Take a little time, search the websites and get an age appropriate, inexpensive racquet. You can always show up the next time a lesson session begins and resell it to someone else if it doesn't work out.

I’d not let my 12 years old use poly strings. Way too harsh on the arm and wrist.

I have always played with full poly, no problems.
It really depends on the person wether you get hurt or not.
