    yes, I have it and I like it a lot: it is versatile for situations like indoor and street and when you don’t want to change your lense too often, you either go out with this lense alone or with others like 16-35 in your backpack. If astrophotograhy is something one wants to pursue, as far as the Sony e-mount is concerned, this has to be THE BEST lens for that purpose. I’m an enthusiast that wants to do astrophotography, so I pre-ordered the lens as soon as it was announced.
    On a Sony a7rii/iii I can also use crop mode to get a 18MP image with a 36mm field of view as well as the regular 42MP image with the 24mm field of view. AND it balances well on my Zhiyun Weebill Lab. 😃👍🏽

      24mm is not wide enough for astro. Can you get some good shots at 24mm sure! Can you get some better shots at 16mm definitely!

    • @jointspecialist
      @jointspecialist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      strider00111 16mm true, but who has a 16mm 1.4 with auto focus for the e-mount? I don’t use the 24mm exclusively for astro. I use it for a variety of photography. But 24mm is wide enough for me.

      Question for you guys. What if I bought the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and used it on the A7ii in crop mode, would I get f/1.4 at 24mm?

    • @jointspecialist
      @jointspecialist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CODER QN You could set the aperture at 1.4, but from my understanding you would be actually getting a little less light than on a FF lens set at f1.4.
      Also, on the a7ii, which is 24MP, crop mode would yield about a 10MP image. I could be wrong, but that’s what I remember hearing/reading.
      I’ve heard lots of good things about that Sigma 16mm 1.4. That’s going to be a great lens for the new APS-C bodies that I’m sure Sony will introduce sooner or later.

    Astrophotography is my an addiction for me, I love capturing the stars and doing videos of them moving across the sky. I'll admit, I am a little intimidated that I might not be able to take good portraits with it but I've seen nothing but great photos with it so far! :)

  • @jamespeirce2582
    @jamespeirce2582 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Getting close to 35mm framing with APS-C mode leaves me feeling pretty darn tempted to pick this lens up for my A7R III. I wasn’t thinking about buying this lens, even though I enjoy some astrophotography (I usually use an adapted Rokinon SP lens and the Sony GM wide zoom) until you made that point...
    Most of what I shoot in 35mm I really have no concern for using the camera’s full resolution...

    @Tory9242 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    people don't know what they want, aperture is one of the main points but the main point is the "Moment", every photo you taken is the moment and view and the environment.
    So not every photo you take need under f2.8
    But
    Every photo you take might need randomly at 16mm 18mm 24mm 28mm 35mm (for people who love wider view) or 24mm 35mm 50mm 70mm 85mm 105mm (for people who love deep focus length)
    So in my opinion, 1635 2.8 or 24-70 2.8 are considering the best choice, because it does f2.8 is fair enough and can give selections of focal length for you to choose at the right Moment.
    Nothing in this world is perfect, but you can choose the perfect focal length of your right moment.

    Nice overview, Pierre. Having the aperture ring is a plus. My understanding of the G series lenses having that button is that the button can be configured to various functions - not limited to eye AF. An f 1.4 FF lens is still big enough to attract attention, in my opinion. For a more discrete, but creatively challenging lens, I would suggest a vintage (or third party) manual lens, say f2.8 - without the bulk and weight of the AF and IS mechanisms. Look forward to your Chicago at night vid - colder still 🥶🌬❄️.

I'll go to Lappland in January to chase the aurora. I don't have a ideal lens yet (24-105mm, 85mm, 35mm) and think about the GM 16-35 or the 24mm 1.4.... What would you do?
    1) GM zoom for the win! Because it's the perfect landscape lens
    2) 24mm because of size and fast aperture

    4) none - work your 35mm

      i think it depends. I have the 16-35 GM and it´s fantastic. I use it 90% out of the time. But i dont shoot street. i use it for landscape photgraphy, were you often want to have a wider field of view than 24mm. I dont think 24mm is often wide enough for landscape. And the F 2.8 is more than enough for nice bokeh on a Fullframe camera. But keep in mind, the 16-35 GM is more than twice as expensive as the 24mm. If you are not sure which focal length is the right for you, you should rent one of those lenses and try it out. Or even look at the 16-35 F4 with the 24mm 1.4 GM. You can get those lenses for the price of 1 16-35 GM.

      Yeah it's a joke friends made to me one day gifting me this haha amzn.to/2LqsjFn
      I'm surprised it sold out to be honest - Europe was the same. Maybe they didn't anticipate people would like it - the size and weight are a big reason it'll be on the camera!

    I really want to use this lens for a 2 lens travel system and torn if it makes sense to pair with the 24-105 f/4 or 28-75 f/2.8

    Do you think the 16-35gm is just as good in low light as this lens? Especially with the new a7siii coming outt

    • @strider00111
      @strider00111 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      16-35 is a lot more versatile! Especially for Astro! 24 is not wide enough.

    Je vais le prendre en remplacement de: Irix 15 f2.4 pour l'astro, 28mm f2 et 24-70 f4 (que j'utilise quasi toujours à 24mm) .:)

      J'en ai acheté un l'année dernière que j'ai renvoyé direct, puis je viens d'en reprendre un pour les aurores boréales en Norvège mais je le vends, je trouve qu'il est mou, les étoiles sont déformées même très près du centre....
      bof bof !

      @Pierretlambert  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Je vois merci!! Tu vas adorer le 24mm f/1.4 - c'est un monstre en astro - j'ai vraiment halluciné - et puis il est si petit!! :)

      Tu peux en avoir pour moins cher en grey market sur e infinity par exemple. Ils sont bons mais evudemment la garantie est pas celle de sony... je zyeute ca aussi vu que je vis a Umea au nord de la suede pour les aurore boreales ca doit etre top (pour le moment je me contente du 16 35 mm f4 mais j aimerais bien upgrade :/)

      Try the Sigma 24 1.4. Not quite as good as the Sony and way larger and havier but half the price.
