      Two lenses that I think would be fun and challenging to try in this way (and which I've intended to use more often) would be the XF90mm F/2 and XF14mm F/2.8 (eq. ranges being: 137mm and 21mm).

    Currently I'm using Loxia 21mm only in my street photography. So, this would be my 7 days challenge lens. Eventually, I would like to try the Sony 24mm. I don't think that 24mm is too wide. It just depends on what your intent is. I like having a context around my main subject and to show the main subject in relation e.g. of large buildings. I also put a strong emphasis on leading lines. And wide angle lenses are great for leading lines. Wide angle lenses are also great for zone focussing thanks to the immense depth of field. You hardly get your subject out of focus even with a manual lens such as the Loxia 21mm.

    24 mm is a bit wide, but it can work in tight Asian cities with narrow alleys. I think I'd go with a 35 mm as an only lens though.

  • @jankmedia1985
    @jankmedia1985 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I like the 24mm, 50mm is great too but sometimes you want to see what's going on in the environment and not have it be out of focus to the point where it's just blurry. 24mm does a good job of retaining clarity for certain scenarios.

      A prime lens historically will be sharper, and with a larger aperture and allows better low-light shots. It's a matter of taste, depending on what kinds of photos you like to take.

  • @JacobCarlson
    @JacobCarlson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The not-so-hidden secret about shooting prime lenses with a Sony full-frame camera (and maybe others) is that you also have Super 35 mode which essentially gives you two focal lengths! With my 28mm f2, I basically also have a 50mm lens and it has helped me to get certain shots a number of times!

    Thanks for the video. I spent the entire summer using a 20mm (not a 24mm) for street photography in South Korea. I have to admit it is very challenging at times to use it. When i was full of energy and felt like interacting with people the photos came out great and quite engaging, but there were many moments when i wished i had a longer lens (35mm or 50mm) because i simply wasn't in the mood of getting in so close( you also get tired of people's reactions when you try to stick a lens in their face:). Also making a nice composition with a lens this wide isn't easy at all because so much is in the frame. For me it is very useful at times to have when the mood strikes, but as an everyday general street photography lens, if i could only go for one it would be a 35mm (just about perfect balance).

    I shoot with a 28mm 1.8.... It's great 95% of the time... although at times vertical lines can be distorted on the right or left edges. Never used a 24mm.... I would think that there may be barrel / fisheye distortion tendencies there as well. Careful out there.

    Great video! I have 50mm 1.4 and a 16-35 2.8. I’m undecided on whether to get a fast 24, 28 or 35 next. For street photography i like to go out with just one lens and force myself to work the with focal length at hand. 50mm doesn’t give me as much context as I’d like, and i miss a lot when shooting from the hip, but it is fast and i get good separation. I’d like something faster than the 16-35 2.8 for better separation, and also because its bulky.

    to answer your question I would definitely pick up the 24mm to challenge myself during street photography. I recently played with it and it was a challenge for me because 24mm is so wide compared to the 35 or 50. Like you said 24mm forced me to get closer to my subject it forced me to develop my story of the scene. thank you for sharing this video. I switched three days ago from my ZEISS 35mm to the 24mm GM. At first I was like: "Oh shit! What the f*ck did I just do?!" because I use always just one lens on my system and it looked so strange at first. But for now, I think this was one of the best decisions I just did. Everything I shoot gets way more story in it, even portraiture isn't really an issue, it's possible but you have to go very close. You can shoot like on your iPhone (hope you know what I mean, I love those kind of personal shots) but with that feel and look of a professional gear, this changes a lot because it's way more possible to do a kind of photography which I couldn't with the focal length of 35mm.

    OK I might be speaking from a Sony perspective. But the 24 is a sweet lens to have. Because if I’m using it on my a 7R3 I can always put it in APC mode and have a 36 mm. And if I have it on my a 6500 , which would be actually 36mm , I can always use my clear image zoom to get in closer for my shots. . So yes I would choose my 24 mm 1.4 GM . 😉

    🐤Canary Islands, eh? Not surprised you went somewhere warmer than Paris in November. Only 3 days with the lens? Give yourself more time, Pierre. Points well made, however. 24mm too wide for street photog, unless you and your subject are in a train, bus, elevator, or phone booth and both have good deodorants 😂. Another problem you evidently had with this venue is not enough people - shouldn’t have to chase after your subject. If I had to use but one lens on a FF cam, I’d select a 35mm prime - light weight, good depth of field for zone focusing and not too much distortion. BTW, love the newsletter - has anyone ever told you that you have a talent for writing? (No surprise, if not - just kidding.) For a challenge 24mm is an amazing focal length, another good challenge could be a prime like a 200mm 300mm or more ;)

    I use a G1X while I ride my motorcycle all over the place. I'm more of a landscape photographer, I even shoot cities and buildings like they were landscapes, so people will normally look tiny. The G1X has a 15-45mm lens, 24-70mm equivalent in full frame. But 99% of my shots are at the widest angle possible. So it's a focal length I know quite well. Maybe someday I till try street photography, but I guess I would be too shy even zoomed in from afar, people notice you are pointing the camera at them.

    I was encouraged to get the Fuji 18mm (24mm equivalent) but went for the 33mm (50mm equivalent) instead. I just don't like the way that the 24mm equivalent makes the background look like it's being stretched away from you. It feels almost gimmicky and makes the lens 'part of the story' too much for me, although I'll admit it gives photos a lovely dynamism.
    But we'll see if I find the 50mm equivalent too restrictive for London's busy streets, and if its 'as the eye sees it' results feel too lifeless. I've been using my 16-55mm (24mm-84mm equivalent) for two years and know I often gravitate towards the mid-range.

    I've loved wide-angle photography for decades, and decades ago 24mm f/2.0 Canon FDn was my main lens for photo-journalism, but a 24mm f/1.4 was always my dream lens as it would do just as you say, put subjects in dramatic perspective but yet isolating them from the many elements and clutter a 24mm brings into the frame.
    24-70mm f/2.8 is my favourite for street photography and most shots of people and places. But if I had only one focal length for street photography, 40mm on a full frame would likely be it, as when I shoot Street photography with the 24-70mm I find most of my people on the street shots are at 40mm and 60mm, with perspective and dramatic shots of places and things at 24mm. Kai Wong did a video about 40mm and street photography and he echoes my sentiments about 40mm closely.

    Leica,as the one defined the game , does not have any 16mm(24 equivalent) prime lens, that must be a reason…24 is difficult, not wide enough for landscape, not focus enough on the street

    24 or 35mm lens for an island. As smartphones now have 24-26mm prime lens people will be more used to wider angle. 50mm will soon be perceived as too narrow 😉

    There's definetly something special about the 24mm. I dont know if it’s the AoV the resembles photojournalism style, but it somehow catches me.

    That "with a zoom lens you get lazy" argument is nonsense and overused. Having a 70 200mm doesnt keep anyone from moving. If you want to move, you will move. As a matter of fact, unless you are a wildlife photographer who is just waiting for hours for a lion to enter his frame, you will move.

    If we are talking about smartphones I heard that a wide angle lens is between 25mm to 35mm...is this correct? And anything lower than 25mm is considered "ultrawide"? Please advice. thanks.

    I think 24mm is too wide for street cz u have to intrude someone privacy by getting too close, 35mm will be more convenient. i use mostly 24mm for potrait, indoor, coffee shop, product and landscape. The dramatic perspective is really appealing

    I just bought the 24mm Samyang 1.8. Incredible 227 grams, fastest AF, 19 cm nearest focal distance( marvelous)and yesterday I went on tour in the street…and I had 100% the same problems that you explain as the bad sides of the 24mm. All people are like small ants in the pictures.
    Great video! Thanks!!!!!

    Over the decades, I tried 21, 24, 28, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 55mm lenses in one-lens/one-body situations. All worked well.
    For the 24mm focal length, I used a 24mm f/2 Nikkor prime or a 20-35mm f/2.8 Nikkor zoom.

    The other problem is: if you get very close( like Water Klein) people starts to get really deformed if they are far from the center.
