    Nice lens, bought it, tested it and returned it! 24mm is really not wide enough for Astro. Sure you can get some nice shots but you really want a 16mm< lens to catch the full milky way and the foreground! If you are a landscape photographer you are going to want to stop down anyways, so 1.4 is kind of useless. This probably a good lens for portrait, video, low light action where you get close to the subject.

      @@Casskario hi, I bought it too (to use with an A7RII, for the purpose of nightscape photography). For the purpose of astrophotography, especially in the dark sky reserves of New Zealand, it really is quite fantastic. Having said that, that part of the video with this guy turning the zoom ring at max speed while the lens is on AF is just absolutely disgraceful and disingenuous. Sony probably would cut him off if they knew of this marketing sham!

      24 not really wide enough.....

    • @Hangs4Fun
      @Hangs4Fun 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@strider00111 that is definitely a matter of opinion. I have been using my 16-35GM up till now. And usually end up cropping in anyway. Depends can where in the world you live and how far away your foreground is away.
      But mainly, I do a lot of video recording at camp at night and f/2.8 is just not fast enough. I will also be using the f/1.4 for low light 4K where it needs to keep focus on me doing chores around the camp fire.
      I have had success using my 28 f/2 and taking 2 photos and then stacking them as a 2 shot pano. But based on the places I do most of my astro, I'm positive 24mm will be enough. Granted I do big trips out west a couple times each year, and for those, to your point, might not be wide enough. I always have my 16-35GM on me for landscape photography. So if 24 isn't wide enough, I will revert to the f/2.8 or stack a 2 shot pano. I like the 16-35GM, but it does have saggital flairing on the edges when it comes to astro

    Just out last night to capture the Milky Way with my Sony cameras. Don't have this GM. I used a Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 fisheye, a 14-24mm f/2.8 Sigma, and a 24mm f/1.4 Samyang. The fisheye gets the whole arc of the Milky Way in one shoot, but it's still a fisheye. You can de-fish to an extent. The 14mm end of the Sigma does a nice job. Shot a one row panorama. The Samyang just isn't wide enough for one row, so I shot a 2 row pano. However, I shot at f/1.8 with it...and it's just not very sharp that wide open. Need to stop down to 2.8. And if I'm going to do that, might as well use the Sigma and not take it off the camera!!!
    The Sony cameras I use are the A7Rii and the A9. For the A7Rii, I can avoid the star eater issue by shooting in low continuous mode. Apparently Sony did not force the Star eater filter on the continuous mode in the older models. Newer models get the star eater filter regardless of continuous mode. The A9 has the star eater filter. I shot the A9 anyway because it has larger pixels than the A7Rii and I wanted to see the difference. Can the A9's larger pixel's make up for Star Eater? Obviously (maybe it is), longer exposure times also beat star eater. Once star trails start to form, the filter won't eat the stars!!!! You don't need long star trails...short ones will do. Star eater only gobbles up the tinyest stars...so letting them move a pixel doubles their size and saves them.
    Now all I have to do is figure out how to get Lightroom or Photoshop to create a nice pano of my images. Easy to do if you only have a one row pano with a couple of shots. Not so easy for multirow pano's or long row panos...say 8 shots with a super wide lens that you've panned more than 180 degrees. May have to invest in PTGui.

    Have you ever heard of a tracking mount? In all of your images, the stars are already trailing and it's very difficult to tell if the lens is in fact good or not.
    He could end up with much better photos if he bought some cheaper lens (Samyang 24mm f/1.4 for example) and a tracking mount... Or at least take more shorter exposures and then stack them so the stars don't trail... The modded A7s is super useful though.

      The stars are not as pin point in the corners with the Sigma. Check out Ted's Video, he went into more details! Well worth the watch! th-cam.com/video/51X-JW024nU/w-d-xo.html

    • @JasonVong
      @JasonVong  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a bunch of budget lenses on Amazon. Neewer 35mm f/1.7 for example is $80. It's a manual lens that's definitely not bad!

      Also great as well. At 2.8, it should have pinpoint stars in the corners though you will need to crank up the ISO on the camera

    Can you make another 24mm video and compare it to 35mm for portrait work? Would a half body shot with 24mm show too much distortion ?

    Hi Jason I'm looking to buy the Sony A7III in the near future but I'm stumped on what lens to buy I can only purchase ONE! this is a really nice review and you going to a great amount of detail. However what would you suggest I'm in a wheelchair so it needs to be lightweight I'll be shooting pet photography, wildlife, portraits, landscapes, astrophotography
    I've been doing a lot of research and found that 14-85mm at 2.8 or lower is the biggest I'll probably need but I can't find anything that's close any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks. I really can't afford this 24 1.4 even though it's really nice I need something semi cheap.

      @@JasonVong Thanks for the reply. Yeah it's odd because it happens to both my a7iii (bought 3 months apart from different sides of australia). I just find the EVF colours more accurate and no weird tint compared to the rear LCD.
      Not sure if anyone else in your community have experienced this.

    What does 11M mean? Thanks so much.

    • @nilayj
      @nilayj 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you are manual focusing on your sony camera, on the bottom of your screen, you can see what your focal length is. Going to 11mm seems to be the sharpest since most lenses true infinity isn't actually all the way to infinity. Hope that helps.

  • @terrydanks
    @terrydanks 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seems to have escaped many here that this camera has been modified! That is why that red hydrogen alpha nebulosity shows. This is not a simple matter. And you don't "un-modify" it either. Re-sale is pretty much restricted to other astro nerds. Your Sony will not show what this modded camera shows.
