Reason why the mpg is so bad is because the transmission is 4-speed. which already burns gas and the shift points are inefficient so if you changed the transmission and got a better torque converter and tuned everything you'd probably get if you're Lucky 15-16 mpg city 20 mpg highway maybe. Plus the truck has a F250/F350 chassis frame those frames are 1/4 inch thick. So that alone is going to make it heavy. The truck is like 7300lbs!!! You're not ever going to get great gas mileage
Imagine if you were towing a trailer. Plenty of power but it's going to cost you. I have the 5.4, not as much power but I get about 15-17 mpg on the highway. Plenty of power if you're not racing or pulling a heavy trailer. Even then, I don't need to be going 60 plus MPH going up hill with a 7,000 lb. trailer.
