@Balticblue93 duty is made to pierce further by design. Defense is made to expand slightly more by design. And it doesn't expand well with the polymer inside. Powr ball corbon however will expand extremely well with the filling
Questionable anti-clogging features aside, one big advantage of that insert can be ease of chambering. In my experience the difference is noticeable when chambering a 9mm FTX compared to a traditional hollowpoint. It's even more noticeable in caliber 380, to the point where an FTX actually chambers smoother than an FMJ. If you're buying something like a Shield-EZ or a Security-380 because you have grip strength issues that make it difficult to operate the slide, that extra smooth chambering might help to reduce jams due to shortstroking or fingers slipping off the slide mid-operation.
@@4g1vn I hadn't even considered that. I don't have a 1911 yet, but it's on my bucket list. Good to know there'll be at least one kind of hollowpoint that works when I get one.
@@herbderbler1585my 1911 hates weird bullet shapes. federal hst and hydrashok deep chamber just as good as fmj. hornady defense ammo has too many ftf for my case, along with speer gold dot, and basically just about any round that isnt a round nose
That’s funny. I was thinking that exact same thing. I’m a Texan as well, originally from Beaumont but I say in Spring north of Houston. 75° is absolute bliss. 😅
The hornady critical defense with the insert is just their hornady XTP with an insert. That's why if I'm buying hornady it's either Critical DUTY or Hornady XTP. The XTP costs a lot less than the Critical defense and expands better. (As seen in this video.) That makes it a good self defense round because you don't have to worry as much about over penetration. And, if you're just looking for the best 9mm Hornady round, Critical DUTY wins hands down. Only thing that you need to worry about with that round is over penetration. But it's great for self defense and great for beating barriers.
Thanks for this test! It makes sense, though I have never really thought about it. Hornady has traditionally traded less expansion for more penetration with the XTP line. XTPs are surprisingly robust. Some years ago, for giggles, I pulled the 123gr FMJ bullets in some 7.62x39mm M43 ammunition and swapped out .312" 100gr XTPs (resized to .311") then shot them from a full length SKS. They were getting close to 2500 FPS and obliterating the water jugs I shot with them. The bullets I recovered had flattened and lost about half of their weight, but for a pistol bullet that I was pushing two and half times beyond its expansion threshold, I thought that was pretty good.
Sometime ago I remember watching a video from the late Paul Harrell and he was testing different types of hyper ammo in 380 caliber. If I remember correctly the best results that he got was with the 90 grain Hornady critical defense in his meat targets.
Yup, but there are several brands in that caliber that work very well. Critical Defense is one that I carry with no worries. I also like the V-Crown and Hydra-Shock DEEP
I picked up some fiocchi defense dynamics 9mm and 40 JHP I can’t find testing on them anywhere. Good prices on 50 round boxes. Maybe we could see those tested one day 👍🏼🇺🇸 if they suck I’ll just use em up
Could a prosecutor use that against you? "Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury. This defendant modified his ammunition to cause greater harm to his victim."
Thank you for sharing this information with us. I use this ammo in my EDC and I was interested in what would happen without the plug and I was extremely surprised in the results. With this information I would definitely take out the plug for maximum stopping power. You want the bullet to stop and do maximum damage asap. If you go to far through the target you risk becoming the active shooter by hitting past the target.
Those rounds are designed to go through barriers.. it’s why they have the insert so it can go through windshields and walls or whatever without rapidly expanding and still having energy to make it through
Run this test again with a barrier and see if that makes a difference. Put like 3/4 (or maybe 1/2) inch plywood about a foot away and shoot through it to the gel. This would simulate engaging a target through a barrier (such as having to shoot through a windshield) to test for barrier blindness. I know lumber is expensive these days but I think it’s worth looking at.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! I have been extremely satisfied with Hornady Critical Defense for years. Its my carry ammo. You surely don't have to worry about unintended pass through. Its the prefect defense ammo for home defense or carry.
Well... it's trade off. More expansion but less penetrative. The brand appears to be consistent at least. Plus 25 round box for cheaper than a 20 round box of several other brands.
Thanks for your comparison. I don't use critical defense of duty. But, its nice to no about the design. I currently use Fed. Hydro shok Deep in 9mm. From your video reviews. Thanks so much. Next.....for me is. I what to find out if Hydro shok deep. 380 will past the test in 2.7"and 3.5"barrel in .380. Some times in summer I switch my .380 for carry.
Coincidently I tested some of these Critical Defense in 40 S&W for accuracy yesterday out of a 3.1 " Shield and had a bunch of keyholing. Being that the gun is relatively new and has less than 500 rounds through it I have to assume the speed is lacking and causing the keyholing. On the same target I shot some Federal LE Tactical 165 grain . Federal" Put the Lead in the Red " and cut nice clean holes.
I know the pain of losing your shade tree. A storm took out the tree we used for shade when throwing knifes. It was not even a hurricane! Not even a bad storm- even by Florida standards
This is why I make sure the hole in the middle of my JHP is as wide as will feed reliably (Golden Saber "Law Enforcement Only" marked box ammo feeds like ball in my 1911, and using Speer Gold Dot or other premium 124gr +p in my 9mm). I was always skeptical of the bullet dingus except in the LeveRevolution cartridges designed for safety in tube mags.
GREAT TEST! I've always thought the insert was BS! Now we know! I've also been shopping, and the FN57 (Made by Hornady) doesn't come with the blue tip anymore. Now everyone will be taking a pick and removing their inserts...
Oddly enough, in the Communist State of New Jersey, Critical Defense, and Duty, are exempted from the hollow point ban. Take the insert out, and you're a felon, if you have a carry license
Try adding a 3” barrel for ammo tests for all concealed carry viewers. This is a very common situation for many viewers. This test was for 4” as stated earlier. However, not much help for 3” carriers, we are still unsure of this ammo choice for us.
I've tested this ammo multiple times including 3" barrels. Nearly every single test I do includes a 3" barrel unless it's a specific outlier like this. This answered the question at hand in this specific test, regardless of barrel length.
They have a somewhat smaller hollow point hole size, don't they? I always figured part of the idea was to have a shape that might be better for feeding while making sure it will still always perform even if not as big as other rounds.
Great job 👍🏻 this is my main edc ammo and good to see how it performs. One thing I’d like to mention that I have noticed with this ammo is that they don’t crimp them to good. I had a like 5 bullets in a box that the bullets were loose and spinning in the casing. I have a total of over a dozen bullets I just set aside and not want to use them. Any home remedy trick of how to recrimp them is welcomed. Other that that I love this product.
I’ve often wondered about the effect the plastic tips have on expansion. Thank you for the comparison. Handy to know if hollow-points are illegal near you.
That was a very interesting test, Tools! I personally, thought the one without the insert was going to get clogged and cause the round to over-penetrate into the second block! I truly appreciate this test because these Hornadys are my EDC whenever I’m not. carrying a .45. Thanks again for all you do!
We use Critical Defense in our Ruger 380s and it has been the most consistent expander. Not great, but acceptable, and better than other brands we tested.
I have a box of those right here in my room. They were given to me by a buddy to try out at the range to see if I like them. Honestly I prefer federal 147 grain jacketed hollow points.
I was happy my take was same as yours. I always thought of the insert as the insert prevents catastrophic failure to expand due to over clogging versus improving expansion. Also the additional penetration with good expansion seems like a fair tradeoff to me...
Would be nice to see you add some cloth materials over the gel for a more "real world" test. Would the open cavity hollow do "worse" compared to the polymer insert version after going thru 1, 2 or 3 layers of clothing material?
Couple of thoughts here. First, aren’t the tips used to pass the FBI barrier tests that include beyond clothing, sheet metal and window glass? Head to head comparison with a stouter barrier would be interesting. Second, I will take issue with the presumption early in the video that the velocities of both did not need to be tested. Wasn’t the whole point of the inserts in hunting ammunition that the insert improved velocity and its retention by reducing drag? Also, using a simple analogy, I would expect it would be easier to drive my car into a headwind with the windshield intact than without a windshield. Why wouldn’t an open hollow point go a little slower? At the same time, the difference might be small and insignificant at the up close and personal distances of self defense with a handgun versus long range rifle shooting.
Tools, I’d just like to say “thank you” for all the tests and your commitment to getting out the truth. I’m sure It’s a lot of time and money. Keep them coming and hopefully everyone watching likes, comments and subscribes to the channel.
Ive seen similar results from the 22 magnum flex tip ammo! Darn it tools now i wanna see the critical duty (124+p and 135+p) without the tip too! They usually penetrate aorund 18-20" in clear gel and i bet expansion would drop it into the 16-14" range with a more impressive wound cavity! Hornady definitely designed the tip as an enginerded clog versus an open hollow point that may run into thick denim or fleece that can clog up almost anything.
I use Critical Defense as a winter carry round, because they claim that it reduces/avoids clogging of the round when shooting through heavy jackets. It performed pretty much as expected in plain gel, but what about through denim or a heavy winter coat? I'm curious. After reading the first comment, I can say that perhaps it would be beneficial to clearly show the addition to the gel? I watched the whole video and missed any reference to cloth.
I'm pulling the inserts on my 308 version that are in my AR-10 for home defense. I know I know AR-10 and home defense normally don't go together. But it's been my only one all do all rifle. DB15 on the way
They honestly look exactly like the federal hydrashok deep 135gr 9mm with the insert is pulled out from the Hornady but the hydrashok deep has a mean looking centerpost but the hollow points shape is the same
I may be wrong as I'm sure smarter people than myself have measured and tested and so forth but I think the basic reason for projectile expansion failure is velocities lower than 1000 fps... Maybe that polymer plug aids in the expansion even if that velocity is below the threshold but most of the tests i've seen it appears that when you're at 1100 fps or more there doesn't seem to be a problem with fabric spoiling the expansion effects.
I pulled a bunch of my critical duty tips after i did my own testing. With the extra weight they get good penetration and better expansion than regular CT
I always wondered about this and 5.56 Vmax rounds. Mostly 40gr and 55gr. Though, I can see a potential benefit with 77gr TMK, maybe at distance or with a 10 inch. I don't know. Awesome test.
So the tip gives you the 12 inch FBI standard for penetration and a bit better control on the expansion but at the cost of a little bit of expansion diameter. I suppose I will continue to carry this round then as I am satisfied with the results.
Have you ever tried NovX engagement extreme in 9mm? On box says the +p does 1800 fps. and 468 ft.lbs. and the normal on box says 1730 fps and 432 ft.lbs.
@ToolsandTargets I kinda hope you will do a video on them. I've seen jell testing on them but have never seen anyone actually test there velocity. They are my self defense rounds. I'd like to see what someone who knows more then me about guns and ammo actually test them and give their opinion. Seeings how I bet my and families life on them. They can be hard to find sometimes. And I've payed up to just under 30 bucks for a box of 20.
The expansion will always happen in the gel/tissue. The insert is to prevent plugging from denim/clothing prior to entering the body. You are not going to get “plugging” from the gel. The dense gel is what opens the pedals with or without an insert.
Huh. I always wondered about this. As my Liberty Civil Defense 50gr rounds have a huge hollowpoint cavity but doesn't suffer from clogging, I wondered why other hollowpoints do. Thank you for doing this test!

@Balticblue93 duty is made to pierce further by design. Defense is made to expand slightly more by design. And it doesn't expand well with the polymer inside. Powr ball corbon however will expand extremely well with the filling
Great test!
My edc( unless im campaign or going to Atlanta)is 38special,so i don't use them.
But ALWAYS down to learn some ammo info!!
Thank u😊
Questionable anti-clogging features aside, one big advantage of that insert can be ease of chambering. In my experience the difference is noticeable when chambering a 9mm FTX compared to a traditional hollowpoint. It's even more noticeable in caliber 380, to the point where an FTX actually chambers smoother than an FMJ. If you're buying something like a Shield-EZ or a Security-380 because you have grip strength issues that make it difficult to operate the slide, that extra smooth chambering might help to reduce jams due to shortstroking or fingers slipping off the slide mid-operation.
Agree! I have some 1911s that only reliable cycle FMJ and the critical defense ftx.
@0:24 75 degrees?!?!?! Take it from a Texan .... that is a slice of heaven.
That’s funny. I was thinking that exact same thing. I’m a Texan as well, originally from Beaumont but I say in Spring north of Houston. 75° is absolute bliss. 😅
Middle Georgia agrees it's a nice cool day .
From the DFW, I agree 100%!!!
@@abnrgr7569 less humid also I'd bet
From Wisco and I’d love 75 again
The hornady critical defense with the insert is just their hornady XTP with an insert. That's why if I'm buying hornady it's either Critical DUTY or Hornady XTP. The XTP costs a lot less than the Critical defense and expands better. (As seen in this video.) That makes it a good self defense round because you don't have to worry as much about over penetration.
And, if you're just looking for the best 9mm Hornady round, Critical DUTY wins hands down. Only thing that you need to worry about with that round is over penetration. But it's great for self defense and great for beating barriers.
That's a good new name for those rounds, the Hornady critical defense, polymer preclogs
🤭
The small flying ashtray when you pull the plastic tip out!
Flying Thimble. 🤭
I picked up some fiocchi defense dynamics 9mm and 40 JHP
I can’t find testing on them anywhere. Good prices on 50 round boxes. Maybe we could see those tested one day 👍🏼🇺🇸 if they suck I’ll just use em up
Might have some of those.
@👍🏼🇺🇸
Isn't it just loaded with XTP bullets. I haven't bought any Fiocchi JHPs in a long time but I am positive the stuff I have is loaded with XTP
@@JesseLJohnson no those defense dynamics are different bullets. Fiocchi has a XTP line though
I love the Hornady Critical Duty and the Federal HST!
Thanks, now I got some tips I gotta go pull!
😎👊
Could a prosecutor use that against you? "Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury. This defendant modified his ammunition to cause greater harm to his victim."
@@traumajock I'd say a good defense attorney could argue that it was done as to not cause as much penetration. But who knows...
How would they know????
@@_Delta_P_ If a medical examiner couldn't find it during an autopsy...?
Shows how good that projectile actually is though. They might have given an insert to allow it to penetrate further with slightly less expansion.
Surprising results indeed. Thanks for showing what really happens when the plug is pulled.
😎👊
Thank you for sharing this information with us. I use this ammo in my EDC and I was interested in what would happen without the plug and I was extremely surprised in the results. With this information I would definitely take out the plug for maximum stopping power. You want the bullet to stop and do maximum damage asap. If you go to far through the target you risk becoming the active shooter by hitting past the target.
Why bother? Just go with HST or Gold Dot and don't look back.
Those rounds are designed to go through barriers.. it’s why they have the insert so it can go through windshields and walls or whatever without rapidly expanding and still having energy to make it through
😎👊
Definitely not trading my Federal HST's for Hornady's pre-clogged JHP. Nice test, well done!
I pulled the plugs out of some of the +P 135gr ones and shot a Wild Hog with it, it worked 😁
Thanks for the tests.
💥🐗💥
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! I have been extremely satisfied with Hornady Critical Defense for years. Its my carry ammo. You surely don't have to worry about unintended pass through. Its the prefect defense ammo for home defense or carry.
The Hornady way, charge extra for something that doesn't work! I'll pull the plug on mine too! Thanks.
😆
Well... it's trade off.
Good test
Thank you sir.😎👊
Coincidently I tested some of these Critical Defense in 40 S&W for accuracy yesterday out of a 3.1 " Shield and had a bunch of keyholing. Being that the gun is relatively new and has less than 500 rounds through it I have to assume the speed is lacking and causing the keyholing. On the same target I shot some Federal LE Tactical 165 grain . Federal" Put the Lead in the Red " and cut nice clean holes.
Interesting
I know the pain of losing your shade tree. A storm took out the tree we used for shade when throwing knifes. It was not even a hurricane! Not even a bad storm- even by Florida standards
This is why I make sure the hole in the middle of my JHP is as wide as will feed reliably (Golden Saber "Law Enforcement Only" marked box ammo feeds like ball in my 1911, and using Speer Gold Dot or other premium 124gr +p in my 9mm). I was always skeptical of the bullet dingus except in the LeveRevolution cartridges designed for safety in tube mags.
I did the same test with the 45-70 325 grain ftx and the one with out the tip was a pancake compared to the normal mushroom kind of expansion
I’ve done the same with the critical duty results were good no problem thru denim expansion was much better without the polymer tips..
😎👊
GREAT TEST! I've always thought the insert was BS! Now we know! I've also been shopping, and the FN57 (Made by Hornady) doesn't come with the blue tip anymore. Now everyone will be taking a pick and removing their inserts...
😂
Oddly enough, in the Communist State of New Jersey, Critical Defense, and Duty, are exempted from the hollow point ban. Take the insert out, and you're a felon, if you have a carry license
@@GSAZYNSKI Dumb laws!
Yeah they do. Little spikes of jacket go inwards to hold the red insert in too.
I really like the critical defense in my 1912 seems to feed way better than hst
Great test!
🔴😎👊🔴
Great job 👍🏻 this is my main edc ammo and good to see how it performs. One thing I’d like to mention that I have noticed with this ammo is that they don’t crimp them to good. I had a like 5 bullets in a box that the bullets were loose and spinning in the casing. I have a total of over a dozen bullets I just set aside and not want to use them. Any home remedy trick of how to recrimp them is welcomed. Other that that I love this product.
It was a great show once again. And now I wonder if you could compare 9mm to 22TCM (it still in the 9mm platform).
I’ve often wondered about the effect the plastic tips have on expansion. Thank you for the comparison. Handy to know if hollow-points are illegal near you.
Great testing as always, thank you for doing this. Glad to get more information and be better informed. You are a legend
Glad to see you wearing a Cletus hat. My two favorite hobbies meet! Shooting and racing!
Hell Yeah Brother!😎👊
That was a very interesting test, Tools! I personally, thought the one without the insert was going to get clogged and cause the round to over-penetrate into the second block! I truly appreciate this test because these Hornadys are my EDC whenever I’m not. carrying a .45. Thanks again for all you do!
We use Critical Defense in our Ruger 380s and it has been the most consistent expander. Not great, but acceptable, and better than other brands we tested.
I'd love to see this done with 44 magnum Leverevolution rounds. Entertaining as always bro!!
This was an interesting video. I also wonder if the tip keeps rounds from hanging up in mags with weak springs.
Possible
Refer to my comment just posted. 10 November Sunday. I’m chasing deer today.
Really good video Sr. I needed to see this
I have a box of those right here in my room. They were given to me by a buddy to try out at the range to see if I like them. Honestly I prefer federal 147 grain jacketed hollow points.
Pre-clotted is a great description. I wonder if having consisted properties of the clotting material gives consistent expansion. Cool video.
Looks that way. Thank you sir.😎👊
I was happy my take was same as yours. I always thought of the insert as the insert prevents catastrophic failure to expand due to over clogging versus improving expansion. Also the additional penetration with good expansion seems like a fair tradeoff to me...
😎👊
I'm good with what I found out here. There are countless situations and scenarios that can be drummed up for a "what if."
Tools, I’d just like to say “thank you” for all the tests and your commitment to getting out the truth. I’m sure It’s a lot of time and money. Keep them coming and hopefully everyone watching likes, comments and subscribes to the channel.
Thank you sir. Appreciate that.😎👊
Good stuff Tools. I pulled the plug out of my 22 WMRs for the same reason.
Very cool test! Without the polymer insert you can see how gnarly those bullets are.
& someone already said it im sure but the insert could be helpful for feeding in some guns .both ways work.
The polymer tip is to help that round cycle more reliably btw, at least from my experience with it.
😎👊
I'm pulling the inserts on my 308 version that are in my AR-10 for home defense. I know I know AR-10 and home defense normally don't go together. But it's been my only one all do all rifle. DB15 on the way
Interesting test Tools! Never thought about pulling the tip before. Thanks for the video!
Thank you sir.😎👊
That’s not what she said.
They honestly look exactly like the federal hydrashok deep 135gr 9mm with the insert is pulled out from the Hornady but the hydrashok deep has a mean looking centerpost but the hollow points shape is the same
That is interesting. It’s there to ensure penetration meets standard and the projectile doesn’t over expand. Insert knowledge check right there.
Cool stuff.😎👊
I may be wrong as I'm sure smarter people than myself have measured and tested and so forth but I think the basic reason for projectile expansion failure is velocities lower than 1000 fps... Maybe that polymer plug aids in the expansion even if that velocity is below the threshold but most of the tests i've seen it appears that when you're at 1100 fps or more there doesn't seem to be a problem with fabric spoiling the expansion effects.
Great test. I would like to see this on revolver critical defense. .38 and .357 mag
It may have been mentioned but the tip helps with barriers such glass.
Great video! I’ve been wondering for years what would happen if I took the tip out. Thank you for your content.
I pulled a bunch of my critical duty tips after i did my own testing. With the extra weight they get good penetration and better expansion than regular CT
😎👊
I always wondered about this and 5.56 Vmax rounds. Mostly 40gr and 55gr. Though, I can see a potential benefit with 77gr TMK, maybe at distance or with a 10 inch. I don't know. Awesome test.
Absolutely the best ammo testing and tool time on Bloobtoob.Keep em coming love the channel!
Appreciate that!😎👊
So the tip gives you the 12 inch FBI standard for penetration and a bit better control on the expansion but at the cost of a little bit of expansion diameter. I suppose I will continue to carry this round then as I am satisfied with the results.
Have you ever tried NovX engagement extreme in 9mm? On box says the +p does 1800 fps. and 468 ft.lbs. and the normal on box says 1730 fps and 432 ft.lbs.
Don't think I've heard of that. I'll have to look it up.😎👊
@ToolsandTargets I kinda hope you will do a video on them. I've seen jell testing on them but have never seen anyone actually test there velocity. They are my self defense rounds. I'd like to see what someone who knows more then me about guns and ammo actually test them and give their opinion. Seeings how I bet my and families life on them. They can be hard to find sometimes. And I've payed up to just under 30 bucks for a box of 20.
congrats on 88k Buddy
Thank you sir!💥😎👊💥
Another point is that ammo is much like the duty one, meant to go deeper if you have barriers.
Let’s see 223 next! I was just thinking about this the other day. I tried pulling that tip out and it was stuck in the 223 and 9mm ones pretty good.
Glad you did this one ! i wondered same thing , not a fan of the insert . Thanks Tools !!
The expansion will always happen in the gel/tissue. The insert is to prevent plugging from denim/clothing prior to entering the body. You are not going to get “plugging” from the gel. The dense gel is what opens the pedals with or without an insert.
There is a heavy clothing barrier on here as I plainly stated and show, moron.
I did the same on my Winchester silver holler points 👍
The extra fps on the non tipped projectile could allow more expansion. Good to see that it worked just fine tho
Huh. I always wondered about this. As my Liberty Civil Defense 50gr rounds have a huge hollowpoint cavity but doesn't suffer from clogging, I wondered why other hollowpoints do. Thank you for doing this test!
😎👊
I love you channel and I’ve always wondered how this would affect the performance, thank you for being that go to guy for ballistics
