That temporary cavity, known as stretch cavity, does not completely represent the human body. However, it does reflect how the round can disrupt the organs with shock energy. In the Army, I saw people hit with a .50cal One I saw was a direct hit in the belly-button area at about 100 meters, and it severed the torso from the waist, nearly completely (It basically exploded the target). I saw the same round impact in a lower arm, and it severed it. In the shoulder, it totally incapacitated the target, but did not separate any parts. The round in the belly that severed the torso, was due to that temporary stretch you are seeing. The gel gives an idea, but it has a lot less stretch resistance than the human body does. However, when you put enough energy into the soft tissue, it will certainly have a severe and catastrophic result. The lesson learned then was, - when you needed the target down for sure, send a round from the Ma-Deuce.
@44Mag I was thinking about the initial shock and disruption in gel compared to the human body. Agreed, too bad good guys don't carry around an M2. That's the same concept to me, at least for carrying the 45acp rather than the 32acp
Temporary cavitation by a bullet moving slower than 2200 fps does little damage in living tissue. That’s why center fire rifle cartridges are so much more effective than handguns.
Tools, I think the takeaway from these videos is that .380 is simply a marginal performer in the very best of circumstances. People keep trying to make it into something that it’s not, and ammo companies are happy to play along. Also: thanks for dropping that Paulism at the end of the video.
Good test, no surprises. Many years ago, an acquaintance used a PPK .380 to defend herself from an abusive husband, very abusive. FMJ's, 6 rounds, six through and through. He still dang near got her before enough blood loss for him to collapse. It showed me the relative ineffectiveness of FMJ in .380. All those hits were torso hits, 12 holes. Sure, eventually they worked, but not quickly. The new designed bullets with the fluted noses are the way to go if you use anything with a less than 3.5" barrel. You've shown us proof of concept in that. Just so you know, FMJ is just a hole punch, particularly in the shorter barrels. If it makes the perps run when hit, it's better than a prolonged conflict, but fooling yourself into thinking it's a one shot stopper in the torso might give you a worse day.
Study after study shows .380 has basically as much one stop incapacitation, fatality rates and average number of rounds fired as 9mm and 45acp. It always comes down to shot placement more than caliber. And perhaps that is why .380 is on par, because good shot placement is easier.

Ageed
I've gotten so used to carrying the G29 10mm all summer that I could never feel good going to .380.
@@ToolsandTargets Yup! You know me with 45acp. I definitely want to get a 10mm sometime soon. Hope all is well. Be safe. Have Fun
Have you tried any ammo from Super Vel?
FMJ is the most durable affordable reliable best penetration in anything. Perfect for the .380. Lead is my favorite. 200 gr out of a 38SW is gonna make a dent in something. Rambling sorry. Thanks for the show.
I know a thing or two about rambling.😂
This TUI isn't reliable. I've got HST 99 grain in my BG 2.0. When they're gone, then Winchester FP FMJ. Good test, Tools. You save folks their hard earned money. 😎👍🇺🇸
The Winchester flat point fmj is what I would use for fmj. I almost used that for this test but figured the round was a closer match to the TUI.
Yep. The very first thing I thought when I saw these was overpriced FMJ.
Thx TnT 🗽🎯🙏🔫🇺🇲
