im constantly torn between the fact that a lot of iconic reality tv had some horrible psychological impacts on the cast and the entertainment value of the old reality tv standard. waiting for a new show to achieve the latter without encouraging the former
Yes! Thank you. I can't believe I had to scroll so far to see this comment. I think the reason early reality TV was so good was because there were no rules. Those people were starved, emotionally manipulated, psychological tortured, and more. I think about a video I saw of a contestant talking about their time on survivor I think and she said she stripped down naked and did sexually promiscuous things with another woman on camera because she hadn't had food in days and was desperate. Absolutely insane what those producers got away with.

temptation island is actually an old show that aired in the early 2000s and has been revived by USA network, so it's actually an old show but the format is the same from original airings
@@jewelz00 haha same! im surprised people don’t remember it, i watched it and reruns all the time. i actually enjoyed the first 2 seasons of the current reboot but the 3rd one was more on the boring side
Yeah that's the thing. It's funny she uses this as an example of how reality shows have changed and gotten weird because this specifical example, Temptation Island, is like a 20 year old idea that's been resurrected and hasn't really been updated enough. I don't blame her, she was probably a little kid when the original was on and it was never super popular like Survivor or American Idol level fame, so she probably had just never heard of it before.
I’ve been binging old reality tv for the past few months and I completely agree!! I’ve been binging Jersey Shore, RHOA, and Dance Moms and they’re honestly so much more entertaining than anything I’ve seen from the past couple years!
reality TV at this point is fully just self insert fanfic of the star, and the way they want their life to be perceived edit: oh my god I'm Thinking of Ending Things is amazing, i'm so glad you read it!!! low-key wish u still did booktube so i could get ur full thoughts on it
i blame reality tv from the 2000s for the way i turned out like i'm not even kidding i've adapted the personalities of at least 5 different reality tv stars and it's made so many people hate me 😩
One of the most mesmerizing reality shows I’ve seen was “Beauty and the Geek” and it upsets none of my favorite commentary channels have made a video about. Please, Casey, you can make this happen! XD
The worst part is. Australia just rebooted it. Like it's airing a new season NOW. also CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW BEAUTY AND THE GEEK WAS CREATED BY ASHTON KUTCHER.
Reality TV was never my cup of tea but even I recognized the amount of Island based dating shows. At first I thought all of them were sibling shows of Love Island, lmao
my favourite reality shows have always been ones that are competition based!! Survivor has been a favourite of mine since the very first season, but I've also really enjoyed Face Off, RuPaul's Drag Race, and most recently The Circle. idk I just find it more compelling when the drama at least has a side of skill-based challenges lmao
I loved I’m Thinking of Ending Things. I had to immediately reread it upon completion because I couldn’t believe I was that clueless thought the entirety of the book 😅
Yes! Although looking at their early seasons, I can't help but think that it is just impossible to replicate those now. The queens will be cancelled if Untucked was on the level of madness of seasons 2 / 3 / 4.
Back when I was a high school student in the late 00’s I considered myself something of a connoisseur of wild, “trashy” reality TV. And I mean the worse it got the more I loved it. Some favorites of mine included Paris Hilton’s My New BFF, Daisy of Love, and Charm School. I think shows like this were really a product of their time for a few reasons. First of all, back then everyone who was going on these shows was doing it hoping to get famous. This was before social media became what it is today. Now it’s easy enough to just gain a following from the comfort of your home that people aren’t as keen to go nuts on TV for fame. Why go on television and make a fool of yourself when you can just upload something to TikTok or Instagram? I agree that people also can’t act as problematic on TV anymore without garnering more criticism, but I actually think it goes even deeper than that. I think as an audience people tend to be more empathetic now, and things that used to be utilized for laughs would probably not get the same reactions now.
I’m so glad I’ve found someone with the same passion for TLC that I do. They really know how to find the craziest people on the planet and I’m obsessed with it.
i'm from belgium and this just brought back a memory where I used to watch the french version of Temptation Island on tv in the early 2000s and thinking I was probably way too young to watch this bc of how s*xual it was 😩
@Florence lmi I feel like the first couple seasons of everything (at least back in the day, don’t know now) were all insane 😭 how did so much of this stuff air on tv at a time slot where kids could watch it lmao
i consistently watch love island (uk is the best btw no competition) in the summer because it’s stupid and sunny and trashy so i get entertained, but my favourite reality show is dance moms and you can really tell what’s better lmao
Your comment about how the audience has also changed is so true. America's next top model was my life growing up and watching it now can still be fun but that show was just psychological (and sometimes physical) torture disguised as modeling advice. If it aired now with no nostalgia to pad it, it be over in a second.
I've never watched Temptation Island but the Finnish version has been in the news lately for accusations of getting people drunk and filming them without their permission. There have been death treats and I think some people are suing the producers.
oh my god when you mentioned temptation island I screamed lmao I started watching it last summer with my friends and it's so fucking boring to the point where the producers were very clearly fabricating conflict by showing the contestants ambiguous or misleading footage of their partner it's soo baaadd
i think it’s because now days the reality shows are all about the contestants getting followers and becoming influencers peddling appetite suppressants, but back in the 2000s it was more that these people wanted either prize money, or wanted to ‘make it in hollywood’ so they were desperately attention seeking, which is entertaining as hell! now they just want to look hot lol
100% agree. The big change is the rise of the internet and social media. For one, in the past people were chosen to be on a tv show because they were interesting. That was the number one criteria for being a cast member. You must be interesting. Now, I think a lot of people are chosen/audition for these shows because they want to be (or are currently) an influencer. Just as you said, I’m not claiming that influencers aren’t interesting. But! In order to have an online following, the most important criteria is that you are attractive. Not just physically, but the image you present to the world must be attractive; your family, friends, business, relationships etc. has to be attractive. Your personality comes behind being an attractive person. Personality is not important to becoming an influencer. Second, because the internet is forever, people are less likely to say and do embarrassing/dramatic/mean/bad things that would make a show interesting. If you do or say something you might later regret, that shit will follow you for the rest of your life. So people are more tame and nice.
im a huuuge big brother & survivor fan. there’s something about reality that competition shows and watching the social strategy play out that’s so .... chefs kiss 😩 !!!!!
When I was 16 (in 2016) I made an episode story called “dating reality: ruined couples” that was about couples being forced to date other couples while on the show, it was in 2016. I came up with the idea because it was so crazy that it could never be real. I can’t believe they actually made an actual show like that LOOOOOOL
My other crazy ideas in 2016 that I turned into episode stories Dating reality: love is blind Contestants were forced to date the people they were the least compatible people with, and whichever couple was the last to break up won. Dating reality: ex’s are messes The contestants thought they were going on a regular dating show, only to be forced to date their ex’s, and whoever lasted the longest won.
The later reality shows tends to overuses the 1000 hertz sine wave tone (one stock guitar sound) way before I was born just like how traditional 4+ camera setup sitcoms (modern versions) in the modern era tends to overuse stock laughings from past audiences. I am not sure if my answer is correct but I am sure nobody has ever notice that.
I think part of the problem is social media and how these people don’t want to be attacked and called “bullies” or “mean” or sent death threats for bring the drama on a show.
I feel like with influencers we already get to see so much of their lives and interact almost directly that it doesnt have the same intrigue to see them on tv
the part about racism is so true!! I used to really like big brother but multiple years in a row its been a pattern where literally every minority gets voted off first and the attractive white guys always dominate the house. Very disappointing :(
I always liked Big Brother (UK) bc it had the isolated with strangers aspect, the games/challenges aspect and the psychological experiment aspect all in one.
I ate up Hell's Kitchen, Bridezillas, Flavor of Love, and KUWTK as a kid. Also, the Great British Baking Show. That was such a nice and relaxing show it's surreal 💖
Casey added in that rotating effect for the plants to hide the fact that the back ground is actually a green screen and she’s actually filming this from ratalouis sex dungeon . . . . You need deep Casey knowledge to get this ref
I don't have the ref, but I thought you misspelled ratatouille and wondered wtf is a ratatouille sex dungeon. Unless you really misspelled it and then I'll be even more confused 💀
@@raviolik1273 ah this references an ancient Casey lore. It is a running joke in this channel that Casey gets it on with ratalouis (a monstrous mix of remy the rat from ratatouille and Louis from one direction) there are even fan fictions with Casey and ratalouis. She reads it in a video, you should check it out it’s the funniest thing ever.
i’ve personally never been into reality TV even as a kid in the 2000s but i recently watched the circle and i actually really liked it! i agree that competition shows seem to bring out the best content for reality tv
The challenge is literally my favorite show, and I love that they pick the cast from other reality shows aswell so we as an audience can already be familiar with them, and the casting people can choose good reality tv personalites. Obvi, that doesnt always happen, but the people not really made for reality tv are usually not there for long anyways.
Temptation Island is actually an old school reality show that premiered way before Jersey Shore, Kardashians, housewives, etc. in 2001. Love Island is a riff off Temptation Island not the other way around.
I feel like we are so focused on the west and unrealistic drama that we forgot that there are hidden gems from the east (or shows with different races) like bling empire, singles inferno , terrace house or even shark tank India. These shows are a whole package because we are viewing people who are different from the white dominant reality tv industry. Not only that there are some therapeutic shows that you can put on while working like hyori's homestay. I don't think reality tv is dying, I think we are just not ready to open up.
i’ve been a fan of big brother for years and as the show continues i’ve noticed that the players seem to be focused way more on how they’re perceived and making it to the jury house so they’ll have social media “fame” after the show rather than focusing on winning money. they’re so concerned with standing out and having marketable catchphrases and stuff rather than using real strategy to play old fashioned big brother, very interesting to see and i 100% agree that social media is changing reality tv!!
I've only ever really watched competition based reality TV and I definitely feel like it's easier to make entertaining. I think part of it is seeing people make decisions and thinking "Ooh, that's a good idea" or "😬😬😬 This won't end well" and there being a genuine sense of tension because regardless of how much is scripted at the end of the day, the people there really do want to win. I'm thinking of stuff like Bake Off or the Apprentice (the UK one at least, I've never seen the American one), where obviously people will have ideas on how to complete their task and seeing the obstacles that are thrown in front of them and how they react is the entertaining part 😅
zeus tv has a1 reality tv right now bc the shows have the toxicity that network reality tv doesn’t have anymore. jasmine’s cabaret is the most exciting reality show i’ve seen in a long time and it’s bc of the toxicity. they also have a bad girls club reboot and it’s already better than anything on networks.
The reality shows i recently rewatched was The Flavor of Love and I Love New York. Tiffany Pollard/ New York is my fav reality show icon and no one can convince me otherwise
I think it's because at the time when influencers weren't a thing we loved looking into other people's lives and reality shows were the only way we could do that. Now we constantly see peopels lives through social media so its almost demystified that concept. I think it's also because we feel the need to be more polished online whereas back in the day you were encouraged to be messy
Completely agree! I love the elimination competition shows, Project Runway, America's Next Top Model, etc. I never watched Top Chef back in the day, but I recently started at Season 1. It's a 2000s time machine in the best way, contestants being messy and saying/doing whatever they want without a care.
Mais ouiiii je me disais bien que ça me rappelait quelque chose. Dans les années 2000 je voyais des pubs pour ça avec des gens en maillot de bain qui se roulaient des pelles et moi qui étais toute petite j'étais genre 😳

Also, the people in it are somewhat likeable as well. Personally I'm bored watching it by myself, but if someone else is there commentating with me, it's good.
I wish The Circle participants would focus on electing the person they think is the coolest instead of finding catfishes. I like the transparency as well
temptation island is actually an old show that aired in the early 2000s and has been revived by USA network, so it's actually an old show but the format is the same from original airings
yes 👏🏼 i was looking for this comment. like am i the only ancient millenial here who remembers (probably) 😩
@@jewelz00 haha same! im surprised people don’t remember it, i watched it and reruns all the time. i actually enjoyed the first 2 seasons of the current reboot but the 3rd one was more on the boring side
Do y'all remember Joe Millionaire and Beauty and the Geek?
Yeah that's the thing. It's funny she uses this as an example of how reality shows have changed and gotten weird because this specifical example, Temptation Island, is like a 20 year old idea that's been resurrected and hasn't really been updated enough. I don't blame her, she was probably a little kid when the original was on and it was never super popular like Survivor or American Idol level fame, so she probably had just never heard of it before.
@@Chelaxim beauty and the geek was such a fun program to watch ! I especially enjoyed the Aussie version
I’ve been binging old reality tv for the past few months and I completely agree!! I’ve been binging Jersey Shore, RHOA, and Dance Moms and they’re honestly so much more entertaining than anything I’ve seen from the past couple years!
reality TV at this point is fully just self insert fanfic of the star, and the way they want their life to be perceived
edit: oh my god I'm Thinking of Ending Things is amazing, i'm so glad you read it!!! low-key wish u still did booktube so i could get ur full thoughts on it
I was somewhat triggered by the ending, so cw suicide for anyone who wants to read it
@@iJustWannaBeNameless oh, god yeah, i should've mentioned, thank you
i blame reality tv from the 2000s for the way i turned out
like i'm not even kidding i've adapted the personalities of at least 5 different reality tv stars and it's made so many people hate me 😩
😳
I actually adored The Circle so much, it feels remarkably wholesome and cute. I loved so many of the participants.
the fact that tiktokers with the worst line up got a show is really bad news for Netflix tbh
One of the most mesmerizing reality shows I’ve seen was “Beauty and the Geek” and it upsets none of my favorite commentary channels have made a video about. Please, Casey, you can make this happen! XD
PLZ THAT LOOKS HILARIOUS
Where can I watch it
@@vivsadaptivelife9500 some of the first seasons on youtube
The worst part is. Australia just rebooted it. Like it's airing a new season NOW. also CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW BEAUTY AND THE GEEK WAS CREATED BY ASHTON KUTCHER.

Reality TV was never my cup of tea but even I recognized the amount of Island based dating shows. At first I thought all of them were sibling shows of Love Island, lmao
YES the challenge. I miss being a 13 year old convinced I could manipulate my way to 1st place.
Everytime Casey uploads a new video, it helps refreshen my mental state. Her videos are such a breath of fresh air in my life lol
hey is that a FLCL profile pic? looks cool!
@@watchyourprofanity8032 Indeed, thanks for noticing
It's my favorite anime lol
my favourite reality shows have always been ones that are competition based!!
I had to immediately reread it upon completion because I couldn’t believe I was that clueless thought the entirety of the book 😅
fr that book messed with my brain-
The plants are just partying 🎉
RuPaul's Drag Race is the best reality tv franchise of the past decade.
Y E S!!!
Yes!
Although looking at their early seasons, I can't help but think that it is just impossible to replicate those now. The queens will be cancelled if Untucked was on the level of madness of seasons 2 / 3 / 4.
Also it ties with Casey's point about competition reality TV still being interesting.
I was waiting for it to be mentioned cause I find it to be peak entertainment
@@ajfrostx I mean look at the reaction to Kandy and Tamisha's fight as opposed to idk Serena vs Everyone and that proves your point
I think as an audience people tend to be more empathetic now, and things that used to be utilized for laughs would probably not get the same reactions now.
omg I love the spinning plants. embrace them haha
The host is also the host of the Antiques Roadshow, which I can't help but find absolutely crazy
The early 2000s was the peak of reality tv: flavor of love, the simple life, Jersey shore, 16 and pregnant, girls next door...
The plants are tryna leave bc they’re disturbed by present day reality shows ... it’s okay, plants. We are too. 🤠👍🏾🪴
I literally binge watched a bunch of Casey’s videos last night and was wondering when she’d post again. Good timing lol
oh my god when you mentioned temptation island I screamed lmao I started watching it last summer with my friends and it's so fucking boring to the point where the producers were very clearly fabricating conflict by showing the contestants ambiguous or misleading footage of their partner it's soo baaadd
i think it’s because now days the reality shows are all about the contestants getting followers and becoming influencers peddling appetite suppressants, but back in the 2000s it was more that these people wanted either prize money, or wanted to ‘make it in hollywood’ so they were desperately attention seeking, which is entertaining as hell! now they just want to look hot lol
“Put them on a paddle boat, I don’t care, at least it’ll be different” 💀
Honestly the only modern reality show I can actually watch is Are You The One I’ve never seen a more chaotic or toxic show before
I’m with you. Whoever came up with the show is a straight up genius.
Although I do love watching "Are You the One," I feel like "Ex on the Beach" tops that one with the drama
im a huuuge big brother & survivor fan. there’s something about reality that competition shows and watching the social strategy play out that’s so .... chefs kiss 😩 !!!!!
My other crazy ideas in 2016 that I turned into episode stories
Dating reality: love is blind
Contestants were forced to date the people they were the least compatible people with, and whichever couple was the last to break up won.
Dating reality: ex’s are messes
The contestants thought they were going on a regular dating show, only to be forced to date their ex’s, and whoever lasted the longest won.
I feel like social media in general has replaced the 'slice or life for hot ppl' reality tv

You can't blame the plants, everyone bops a little when 'You spin me right round' is on
The plants dance, thus they have personalities, thus...we must name them
i’ve personally never been into reality TV even as a kid in the 2000s but i recently watched the circle and i actually really liked it! i agree that competition shows seem to bring out the best content for reality tv
Real ones remember The Simple Life with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie
The challenge is literally my favorite show, and I love that they pick the cast from other reality shows aswell so we as an audience can already be familiar with them, and the casting people can choose good reality tv personalites. Obvi, that doesnt always happen, but the people not really made for reality tv are usually not there for long anyways.
Temptation Island is actually an old school reality show that premiered way before Jersey Shore, Kardashians, housewives, etc. in 2001. Love Island is a riff off Temptation Island not the other way around.
I completely agree to EVERYTHING you said and I thought I was the only one who felt this way. And The Challenge NEVER fails. Luv u
I don't think reality tv is dying, I think we are just not ready to open up.
i’ve been a fan of big brother for years and as the show continues i’ve noticed that the players seem to be focused way more on how they’re perceived and making it to the jury house so they’ll have social media “fame” after the show rather than focusing on winning money. they’re so concerned with standing out and having marketable catchphrases and stuff rather than using real strategy to play old fashioned big brother, very interesting to see and i 100% agree that social media is changing reality tv!!
boy oh boy am i excited...and sweaty

I just got into the challenge because of paramount+ and I am obsessed! I love seeing familiar faces throughout the seasons
The Sisterhood: Becoming Nuns is my current binge watch 😅
The fact that "temptation island" was a French reality TV show in the 90's ("L'île de la tentation") is killing me😂
Mais ouiiii je me disais bien que ça me rappelait quelque chose. Dans les années 2000 je voyais des pubs pour ça avec des gens en maillot de bain qui se roulaient des pelles et moi qui étais toute petite j'étais genre 😳
yess the challenge was so good back in the days
I loved the simple life. For all the crap people gave Paris and Nicole for being spoiled rich girls, they were willing to make fun of themselves.
Casey casually ignoring paranormal activity in her home is such mood.
