Fun fact about Cake Boss, it was my first introduction to anything gay. They made a cake for a gay wedding, and I watched that episode with my mom when I was like six or seven, and even though my (very religious) mom made sure to tell me how “wrong” it was, I didn’t see why, because it was presented so normally in that episode. So like, thanks for that Cake Boss

Oddly enough, Say Yes to the Dress was the same thing for me. I think it was right when same-sex marraige was legalized in New York, and there were two brides that planned to be like the first ones to get married the day it was instated? Something along those lines.
(I didn't think anything of it at the time. Figured out why about three years ago.)

I watched earlier versions of the show (it started at 17 Kids and Counting in 2008), i believe before Josh did any of the abuse, but still got that slightly-off vibe from Jim Bob and Michelle. I was raised with similar religious beliefs (but not so many siblings) and there are lots of ppl with that vacant look in the eyes because you have to suppress so much of yourself to be a Good Christian.

It sort of lead me to start looking into the Amish and finding out that they weren’t just sweet people living like the olden times and that there were lots of pretty insidious things about the communities involving abuse and the hiding of it

Say yes to the dress is a very surprising show bc the more you watch it the more you’re realise how nice it is. Each episode and crew focuses on making the brides look and feel as beautiful and happy as they can be. It’s a super body positive show, and even when the dresses are tacky you never get disdain from the crew. Their only focus is to have a happy bride. So you often see them hyping them up and such. It ends up being a surprisingly feel good show. I suppose that’s why it’s so popular.

Yes, Say Yes to the Dress is suprisingly nice. I know that's their job, but I love how they try to find a dress that first and foremost makes the bride happy.
Idk if it aired on TLC everywhere (it did in my country), but I also liked How to look good naked. Instead of a regular makeover show they really focused on making the participants feel good in their skin.

To be fair, I remember growing up watching Jon & Kate Plus 8 and while Kate was highkey crazy, people demonized her way too much without acknowledging the fact that Jon did very little as a parent compared to her. Some episodes I felt so bad for her because she seemed so stressed out/strung out basically raising 8 kids on her own while Jon goofed off. It's okay to have fun obviously and kids love to be around the fun parent, but Kate seemed pigeonholed into the strict, mean parent role in a few episodes that could have been avoided if Jon had just... idk took things seriously and helped her out more. Kate was undeniably a nutcase though, don't get me wrong.

The OG Say Yes to the Dress was relatively sane. The concept gets old after a while but fun either way. Actually, my friend's younger sister got to meet Randy Fenoli and try on dresses for Make A Wish and the whole family said he was so kind.

Are we not gonna talk about how the 19k&c were like Amish and sheltered their kids so bad that when they got married, they didn’t know abt life outside
Edit: I meant Amish as in really cut off from society, not like the actual group of people:)

Not amish. I know they ARE quiverful, which is a cultish thing that focuses on having as many children as possible and extreme patriarchy. Maybe closer to Mormonism?

All I remember from Four Weddings is the one episode where a wedding has like, appetizers and cupcakes but no real entrees, so the other girls get hungry and go outside, 'secretly' order a pizza, and eat the pizza outside instead of continuing to judge the wedding

its funny to remember that i too was into jon&kate plus 8 in middle school (?) and will always remember anxiously trying to fit in this special where they split up or something and you had to watch it live because it was 2008 and we couldn't record. its pretty crazy to think about how invested i was as a child in a very adult drama.

fun fact the Duggars are a 'quiverful' family which means they quite literally ARE trying to build an army, one that votes with fundamental christian priorities (learned from a yt channel I highly recommend; Fundie Fridays)
