One of the most under represented and league altering important facts that stemmed from this game is how field goals affect the clock after they’re attempted. When Adam Vinatieri kicked the game winning field goal, there were at least 2 seconds left on the clock that were inexplicably run off when the play was clearly over. The Patriots should’ve had to kick off to St. Louis, and the Rams were upset at the league for not getting another opportunity to pull off a miracle. But by rule, the Rams had no case, and here’s why: At the time, the NFL rules stated that the timekeeper was told when to run the clock and stop the clock when signaled by the referee. When Vinatieri kicked his field goal, the referee never made a signal to the timekeeper to stop the clock, so the timekeeper let the clock run and ended the game. The Rams complained about how confusing the clock rule was, and the NFL apologized and put in the rule book that a field goal attempt cannot take longer than 5 seconds for the 2002 season, and it’s still in effect today
This was exactly true. I was 9 at the time, and that sunday my family had been out running errands all day. We stopped at ruby Tuesday and saw the pregame festivities and remembered the super bowl was that day. Lol

Ireland had played Italy in the first group game at 3 PM ET mainly to avoid the mid day heat even though the match would kick off at 8:30 PM in Ireland. The Irish when they got to Orlando thought the match with Mexico would be at the same 3 PM ET time slot. However what Ireland didn't count on was for their national broadcaster RTE to ask FIFA at the last minute to move the kickoff time back 3 hours to noon ET so that the match would kick off at dinner time back in Ireland so that RTE could get higher ratings even though the whole country would already be watching the match. This change announced a day before the game ensured that Ireland would be playing in the oppressive mid day heat of Orlando & was one of the reasons why Ireland lost to Mexico 1-0. As you can imagine Jack Charlton Ireland's coach was absolutely livid with both RTE & FIFA for moving the kickoff time a day before the game & completely ruining his tactics as well as increasing the risk of his players getting heatstroke. Because there was so much backlash from this switch, FIFA told all World Cup broadcasters that they would not move the kickoff time for any future World Cup matches simply because the networks wanted higher ratings.
For the note at the end, actually the tougher and more meaningful kick for Vinatieri and the Pats franchise as a whole was the 45-yarder in the snowstorm in Foxboro during the divisional round. Without him converting that kick, the tuck rule is a footnote and the Patriots dynasty is at least delayed and maybe doesn't get off the ground. Under those conditions, a made kick was much more unexpected than a 48-yarder in a dome. (Scott Norwood apparently didn't get the memo he was kicking in Tampa and not Buffalo at Super Bowl XXV.) The stakes were actually somewhat lower here as a missed kick only results in overtime, and if the Pats lose the game well they were underdogs anyway and it probably doesn't stop the overall trajectory.

If I remember right, the reason the NFL went to the generic logo was because someone accused the league of stealing their design for a previous Super Bowl’s logo and took them to court. To prevent the potential of this happening every year, the league went to the generic logo that they use every year.
