  • It's not often that Vin Scully screws up; he's one of the greatest broadcasters of all-time. However, during week 6 of the 1981 NFL season, when the Atlanta Falcons played the Los Angeles Rams, he made one of the grave mistakes of broadcasting, leading people to be understandably furious about it

Scully must have been so angry at Stenner, who owed Scully a big apology.
Interesting footnote: In 1983, Scully signed at NBC after CBS chose Pat Summerall over Scully to partner with John Madden.
If CBS had chosen Scully, sports broadcasting history would have been altered.
In the end, things worked out for the best. Scully had iconic calls of some of bsseball's greatest moments. And many feel Summerall & Madden were the greatest broadcasting team in NFL history.

If he had gone to FOX fr when they started doing MLB, he would have become the first PBP announcer to work for all four nets proper (remember he also worked for ABC in the 90s) instead of merely appearance-based--Stockton and a couple others did it via regionalization

I saw an interview with a sportscaster who said that you don’t relay information unless it’s proven fact and at this time, Vin knew that but the producer was probably yelling in his ear to give the audience the information, props to Vin for refusing to do so. As a lifelong Dodger fan who has heard Vin all his life, you always got more than a broadcast, you got consummate professionalism and in some cases, a story and we miss him greatly, RIP Vin, may you continue to call Dodger games up in the heavens

This isn't the only major controversy that Bob Stenner has been associated with during his time at CBS as 3 years later during the Dallas GP (one of F1's most infamous races due to the very hot temperatures as it took place in July) he would get into a heated argument with legendary NASCAR announcer Ken Squier (who was calling the race for CBS due him being CBS's main auto racing announcer) on a couple of things. First off Stenner told Squier not to report on the absolutely terrible condition of the track (which was breaking up in many sections due to the 100+ degree heat) prior to the start of the race mainly because the organizers of the race did not want any bad press. Squier still told the viewers about the terrible track conditions mainly because he felt obligated to tell the fans what was honestly happening. Then at the end of the race (won by Keke Rosberg), Stenner told Squier not to report on Nigel Mansell collapsing due to heatstroke mainly because he wanted to focus attention on the winner even though there was footage of Mansell collapsing. Again Squier still told viewers about what happened. Squier was so upset with Stenner after the race that he threatened to leave CBS (which would have really hurt their NASCAR coverage) if they continued to pair him with Stenner. What ended up happening was that Stenner was put into a football only role as a producer & never worked an auto race ever again. For those wondering if F1 returned to Dallas after this disastrous race, they did not & instead F1 raced at Detroit when it came to the US for 4 more years before the US GP moved to Phoenix for 1989.

It would've hurt CBS in not just losing a GOAT announcer, but he did so much heavy lifitng of CBS's NASCAR production himself in the 1980's he established a production company that helped CBS co-produce their NASCAR telecasts.

That grave mistake wasn't Scully's. It was Bob Stenner's. There's a reason why Scully wasn't so quick to tell CBS' viewers what Stenner was telling him. I hope Stenner apologized to Scully for this.

This was a bit hyperbolic. Vinny had plenty of contacts within the Rams, I believe he was friendly with the Rams team doctor and many other team personnel as he did plenty of Rams games and was in many of the same social circles in LA..
This is more on Stenner for pushing info to Vin to go on air with false info without true verification.
It also does feel like Stenner, who was Summerrall and Madden’s producer for all those years was prolly one of the old guard guys who was in favor of Pat and John and not Vin and John and maybe sold Vinny out to make him look bad to hurt his chances in the competition or to help validate the decision.

In my eyes, Scully didn't lie. He just said the report "we" had is that the leg was broken. Who is "we?" The broadcast staff? The booth? The truth is that the report Vin and his partner in the booth had WAS that the leg was broken, which IS the report they got...from Stenner. Stenner is the one who lied.

Broadcasting controversy video idea (and this invokes the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961): Chiefs/Dolphins game from 2005, which was moved to Friday Night due to Hurricane Wilma approaching. The controversy being which affiliates could show the game. And the Chiefs had to fly out the day of the game.

    “That Guy” Alert:
    1. It would be another couple of weeks before CBS would make the official decision to pair John Madden with Pat Summerall.
    2. The day when Scully called both a Rams game and Dodgers game at the same time was the year before in 1980.

Scully probably felt especially accountable to Los Angeles sports fans and would have felt criticism from other LA sports media, so he was naturally awaiting confirmation. Stenner was such a PoS.
