Tom Brady's first Super Bowl deserves a deep rewind

- It’s February 3rd, 2002. The Louisiana Superdome plays host to Super Bowl 36 where the St. Louis Rams and New England Patriots are tied at 17. With seven seconds left, Adam Vinatieri is lining up from 48-yards out to wrap this up and not give the Rams a chance in overtime.
While it all comes down to one kick, this season has been anything but straight forward. Which naturally means the underdog Patriots have the power to knock off the Rams who entered tonight as a two-touchdown favorite. But it’s not that simple - it wouldn’t be fun if it was. So to remember how we got to this point, let’s rewind.

LMFAO 😂
I'm happy you guys used Gil Santos' call instead of Pat Sumerall. Gil is a legend and called games for the Pats since the 70s. You can hear the passion and relief from all the years of frustration in his voice. Rest In Peace Gil, forever a Patriot
His calls were iconic. Really miss hearing him say “WBCN Patriots rock radio network”
Yeah. Even though John Madden (RIP) is more iconic and funny, I think that Super Bowl 36 was his most lifeless commentary.
“The underdog Patriots”
Wow, I guess we’re finally going to see that happen again after 18 years
Patriots draft Trevor Lawrence and go on to win 6 super bowls over the next 20 years
i dunno, Its kinda way more fun to here it that way...
Bruh you called it
Is "sub-underdog" a thing?
It’s so incredibly sad as a Jets fan, but at this point almost tragically poetic, that the Jets were responsible for Belicheck going to New England and injuring Bledsoe to open the door for Brady.
The dynasty started also thanks to the jets...especially for the blow from Mo Lewis to Bledsoe...thanks so much from the bottom of my heart! Mo Lewis deserves a statue just outside gilette stadium 🤣🤣🤣

Thank you for including the WBCN call of Vinatieri's kick.
RIP Gil Santos (1959-2013).
Um, Gil Santos was born in 1938!
They let 2 or 3 seconds elaspe to expire the game clock after the ball clearly went through the goal posts. Thus the very next season there was a new rule that on a made field goal no more than 5 seconds can elapse from the game clock from the point the ball is kicked
Iconic call
RIP WBCN too
Exactly. Summerall called it like it was a 20 yard field goal in the 2nd quarter in the third game of the regular season.
I remember watching this live. I was in 8th grade. Despite being a Jets fan, I thought it was a miracle that a team named "The Patriots" won the superbowl right after 9/11. My Dad's a 49er fan, and would always talk about Cool Joe Montana. Brady reminded me of him. And I've liked Tom Brady ever since then. Plus we've had some great battles with the Pats over the years!
Small but massive note that is important to us up here in NE: that Divisional game against the Raiders was the last one at the old Foxboro Stadium, the same stadium that Kraft saved and allowed the Patriots to stay in New England.
"Had never missed a fieldgoal indoors in a 6 year career" Adam Vinatieri is a freaking goat
Not only accomplishing that but fighting through the commentator curse... truly carried Brady

I know it’s the super bowl and this probably won’t get noticed but I’m still gonna beat this drum. Alec Martinez’s Cup winning goal in double OT for the Kings in ‘14 needs a deep rewind. Considering that the Kings had to come back from down 3-0 to San Jose in the first round and had to win 3 straight road game 7’s to even be in that Stanley Cup final. It deserves a rewind

We will always be known for our 20 year dynasty no matter what I’m always a pats fan
This rams team reminds me as the old patriots, an intelligent coach, smart Qb, whilst relying on their run game, and a clutch kicker
Except Brady wasnt a number 1 pick. Rams have cooks and woods top wideouts. Gurley is a top rb. The rams are one of the highest payrolls. Mcvay is an offensive coach where as bill is a defensive coach and much older in 2001. But other than being completely opposite...yes the 2018 rams are the same as the 01 pats

I love so much that this used the radio commentary at the end. Good choice for a Rewinder! I love it!
Aren't most of the Ram's players on 1-2 year contracts? If so it will be really difficult to become a dynasty without all their 1 year contract players, then even harder the next year. So why are people claiming Rams are the next dynasty?
HeDed I know right? In order for the Rams to be considered a dynasty they have to win SB 53 and win at least 1-2 more within the next 3 years.
I totally remember this. After 9/11, it wasn't a New York team people rallied behind as we all (mostly?) did with the Saints after Katrina. We rallied behind the Patriots. We felt good about this win in a patriotic way. In retrospect though, (as a Seahawks fan) that was a mistake.

Rewind the Murder that happened to the Colombian Footballer for scoring an own goal.
It's been interesting to see how New England's perception of the Patriots has changed over the years. Despite the league showing footage of Boston in all its promo material about the Patriots you have to understand that Boston is a baseball town first and that the Patriots were very much an afterthought for a very long time. I was living near Foxboro when Kraft bought the Patriots from Orthwein and believe me, Foxboro (soon to be Gillette) Stadium is in the middle of nowhere. Kraft and the Patriots showed what can happen when a team is led by dedicated, passionate, and capable ownership that is passionate about the game and there was a definite shift in how the team played and how New England viewed their football team.
I don't like the patriots (falcons fan) but some people forget that the Pats were a low down joke until the 2000s

- 2017 Morgan Williams buzzer beater for Miss St to break the Uconn 111 game win streak in the NCAAW final four
- 2016 WNBA finals game 5 between arch rivals Minnesota Lynx and LA Sparks for a last second win in amazing shootout of a final game
- 2016 ALDS game 5 Jose Bautista with the iconic batflip to seal the Blue Jays series in an insane 7th inning
- 2011 Womens World Cup final, Japan come back to equalize twice and win in PK's over the USWNT
- 2005 Liverpools miracle in Istanbul comeback against euro heavyweights AC Milan in Champions League final

With the heightened sense of Patriotism in the wake of 9/11, these Patriots were one of the biggest feel good underdog stories ever. It's still kinda weird to me that the Patriots are the team that everyone hates. This whole 18 year run is filled with all time classic games, some that nobody remembers like Super Bowl XXXVIII, and some of the most ridiculous one in a million moments both for and against the patriots. They were the greatest field goal away from being one and done in 2001 and maybe Brady doesn't start again for the Patriots, they were also the most miraculous play ever away from being the all time greatest team ever in 2007. Just the way she goes.
Because as you said, you was in 5th grade at the time....I was in college at the time.....the ish reeked of propaganda and it was only fitting that a team that was known for sucking ass in the Super Bowl all of a sudden became great because of their team name.
