    When welding aluminum, the pieces to be welded must be completely free of any and all surface contaminants. A clean stainless steel brush will do nicely. Either a toothbrush size and shape or a rotary Dremel brush. There are also various liquids (acid based) that do the trick. I prefer brushes as they are easier to use and much safer. You can get the SS brushes at most hardware stores. Finally, you must keep your tungsten electrode perfectly clean. One touch on your electrode, with your filler rod or the pieces you are welding, and you will need to regrind the tip of your electrode. Remember that a sharpened tip on your electrode is best for TIG welding nonferrous metals like carbon steel or stainless steel, but a ball tip is necessary for aluminum. Easiest way to create a ball tip on your tungsten electrode is to sharpen it as always, then switch your welding machine to reverse polarity and strike an arc for a second or two. This will melt your sharpened tip into a perfect ball tip. If you contaminate the electrode you will need to redo this whole process again. That's why I always create 4 or 5 ball tip electrodes at once. It will save you time when your right in the middle of your welding project and you contaminate your tip. HTH

    This build is awesome Kev. That hoop thing on your neck/shoulders and attached to your helmet is also to stop what I think is called a basal spinal fracture, which can kill you. It's a fracture where the neck meets the base of the skull, it happens under rapid deceleration. It's what took Dale Earhart out.
    It's great that Tony from Swampthing is helping you out.

    • @juvy-1223
      @juvy-1223 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hoop thing? Haans device. And yea your correct, Dale Earnhardt refused to wear the haans device because “it blocked too much of his vision” there for without the haans device the only thing he had for his head or neck was a normal head rest like you find in your car today and a thin light plastic bucket seat.

      Im a pipefitter and when we get the exotic metals ready for the welder we always clean it down with this to get rid of contaminants.
      Also, DO NOT use sandpaper🤣
      Get yourself a stainless steel wire brush, as a standard metal one will contaminate it.

      Professional fabricator and welder. Clayton is right. Aluminum oxide melts at a far higher temp. Sandpaper isn't really the way to go. You can get the grit from the paper in the Aluminum. I use a scotch bright pad at work which still isn't ideal. The best thing is a stainless steel brush by hand.
      Also the gas you're using matters too. We use straight argon at work. That works for pretty much everything. Not sure what you have but most people use a 75/25 mix of argon and co2. If that's the case you're well will come out dirty.
      Hope this helps and your welds and fab skills are looking great. Might have to check out your ebay things. I need to make some money fast (gotta buy a suit of armour for jousting).

      @@TrillMurray I use isopropyl whenever I lay a bead. Brake cleaner no good plus can leave residue I have found. Isopropyl is by far the best and evaporates very quickly. Also, very rare is the tungsten the issue when it comes to soot.usually it's the cleaner settings on the welder. With the tungsten, I sharpen it like a pencil and then a flatten the tip so it's not pointy. This conducts a far better arc and it more stable on high frequency. You have to wire brush the Alli before you weld and then run it over with the iso. Try it. Works for me and I weld everyday.
