  • Protect is no doubt the most important move in (doubles) Competitive Pokémon. With 12 variations of the move, each having a different purpose, I thought it would be interesting to rank them all on viability and usefulness.
    Do you agree with my rankings? Which do you think deserve to be higher/lower?

    Detect only having 5 PP despite being identical to Protect which has 10 is so bizarre. Also, the description for the move makes it sound like it'd force a miss, not just be a Protect clone (which would actually give it an interesting niche of blocking Urshifu, Mighty Cleave, etc.).

    • @darktemplar446
      @darktemplar446 หลายเดือนก่อน +85

      That would be cool if detect forced a missed. Then the play around it would be moved that absolutely can't miss. Like swift and stuff.

    • @takarijbartleby
      @takarijbartleby หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      Yeah, given the description, I would assume it would work that way. Make it so Detect forces a miss for any move that does not bypass the check for accuracy. Had an idea of a move that works like that called Pilfer. It's where the user steals or knocks off the opponents item if they make direct contact. It is supposed to be the signature move of Blazing Bandit, a Fire/Dark Past Paradox of Salandit.

      The only benefit I can think for using detect over protect is that you are less likely from being prevented off using the move against pokemon with Imprision. Even then it's such a niche scenario it shouldn't even matter

      If a Pokémon attacks a protect user while having an on-contact effect, such as rocky helmet or rough skin, does it do damage through protect? If so, that would actually be a good way to set detect apart with it prevent contact, but still wouldn’t be that useful.

    In VGC, it is actually better to run detect than protect if the mon has it, since imprison is somewhat common and detect doesn't have to worry about it whereas protect does. Detect also has a slightly quicker animation if you are worried about timer lol

    Wide Guard does have use in singles, if very niche: it will still block moves it would block in doubles, like Earthquake or Surf, and unlike regular protect, it will never fail.
    So it can actually be used as a stalling tech or for leftovers recovery.

    Burning bulwark is better than baneful bunker, and it's simply because burn is better than simple poison as a secondary effect of a protect bc if the opponent makes contact with you, more likely than not, they were a physical attacker and a burn will cripple them more than poison and if they were a special attacker, aside from pivot moves, they were unlikely to make contact with you anyway so the secondary effect will not come into play in this scenario.

    tbh in double baneful bunker is probably worse than spikey shield anyways as poisoning a pokemon means they can't be put to sleep or burnt anymore, which is p relevant in doubles, it's still probably a valid no.1 pick as the only useful protect variation for doubles tho

    • @loupe500

      Not true though. Wide guard is used sometimes, spiky shield is always used when had the option, and so is detect (imprison is a thing in doubles). Burning Bulwark is not used because Gouging Fire sucks in doubles, but it would see a ton of play if it were in other mons (like Inceneroar, stay tuned for gen 10’s buff).

    Toxapex runs Protect over Baneful Bunker because BB only inflicts regular poison instead of toxic poison, and you can't toxic someone who's already poisoned, so sometimes it's actively detrimental.

  • @TwoHeadedMeerkat
    @TwoHeadedMeerkat หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Truth be told, I'd put Baneful Bunker a LOT lower, mainly due to its only effect being to inflict regular Poison. This will prevent the target from having different statuses applied, it won't do anything if they're already statused or immune to poison entirely, and is an opportunity for Magic Guard Pokemon to take advantage of. It's good, sure, but I wouldn't put it above Spiky Shield or even regular Protect

    • @MattBudYT
      @MattBudYT  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not bad points, just pretty situational. Every Magic Guard Pokémon is a special attacker with the only Physical move they use sometime being Knock Off which is when that scenario could play out.
      If you were running Baneful Bunker the idea would be to inflict poison as a status for the purpose of chip damage so you likely wouldn’t run sleep/para that follows.
      In that case I just didn’t see how it wasn’t better than protect. Spiky Shield I see more of an argument since you can still hurt Steel and Poison types.
      Thanks for the good input!

    I'd argue Burning Bulwark is a lot better than Baneful Bunker bc the only way to get statused is through contact and in most cases if a pokemon is making contact they are a physical attacker who gets crippled from a burn as opposed to just being put on a timer from poison

  • @mipho5899
    @mipho5899 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Both Spiky Shield and Burning Bulwark are a lot better than Baneful Bunker in Doubles because you'd rather chip and weaken their offense, than trying to stall their HP with Poison.
    It's still good but not as good.
    Even in singles I would say Burning Bulwark is overall better because you punish physical attackers a lot more with the burn than poison which is better for defensive Pokemon, especially considering poisoning the opponent in singles is a lot easier and more common than burning.

  • @loupe500
    @loupe500 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Burning Bulwark is better than Baneful Bunker, even though it doesn’t protect against status moves. Although burn do less dmg than poison, that almost never matters, and even if it did, burn is wildly considered the better stat (specially in doubles). It also have the fact that, although some special mons do have contact moves, most of the contact moves are in physical attackers, which are DEMOLISHED by burn. An ogerpon is something, a burned ogerpon is something way less scary (even though you will have to force it not to use the signature move, since it does not have contact).

    Wait I thought there was another difference than PP with Detect and Protect. I thought Detect could defend the user from moves like Phantom Force mean while Protect can't, so the only reason Detect has lower PP is to make it more reasonable and fair since it blocks, just barely, a wider pool of moves than protect. But IDK, I've never tested this myself.
    Also, as a response to 5:27
    I'd say King's Shield is immensely superior to Obstruct, mainly because it switches Aegislash's Defense & Sp. Defense stats with it's Attack & Sp. Attack stats, and it still protects against status moves.
    And another thing that puts Baneful Bunker above Spiky Shield: it pairs beautifully with Toxapex's signature ability Merciless.

    • @MattBudYT
      @MattBudYT  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      King’s Shield doesn’t block against status moves. For the list I wasn’t considering the interaction with Stance Change either, just the effect of the move if it was used on say Smeargle.
      It would be cool if Detect had more to differentiate itself, but pretty much just a way to counter a “protect + imprison” situation.

    Id make the argument that Blazing Bulwark is the best protect move in doubles. The easiest move to compare against is Baneful Bunker as protect + status, which is useful because that’s what you put at the top. In a doubles setting, I think Burn is endlessly more valuable than Poison due to its ability to effectively destroy physical attackers ability to do damage in a fast paced game. It has so much more of an instantaneous effect, and while it’s damage is weaker than that of poison it still does damage to break focus sash and punish more passive mons. The only downside then of Bulwark is its susceptibility to status moves, which definitely is a downside, however i think the sheer threat of eliminating the offensive potential of like an Urshifu or Ogerpon with a Burn does so much compared to the larger chip damage of poison that it still performs comparatively if not better than Baneful Bunker.

    • @MattBudYT
      @MattBudYT  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good points all around. Definitely is better against the physical attackers more likely to make contact. Really would be my #1 if it blocked status moves too.
      Unfortunately Urshifu doesn't get effected by the burn or the poison with unseen fist ignoring the effects of those moves :(

  • @clegge7

    Detect is better than protect due to the decreased PP imo. Rarely, if ever, would you need to click it more than 8 times and it has the added benefited of not getting locked down by imprison users. And on the off chance you get encore locked into it, you break out of it earlier due to having less PP. It's honestly just better protect.

    New move ideas that popped into my head during this video.
    Displace: The user distorts the field to protect itself and its allies from all moves that ignore accuracy.
    Trick Gate: The user creates a portal to hide behind, protecting it from all moves and redirecting moves that do not make contact back to their user. This move can not be used twice in a row.
    Obscure: The user creates a smokescreen before returning, protecting whichever Pokémon switches into their place.
    Sand line: The user draws a line of sand to create a mystical barrier that protects both sides of the field for 3 turns. The Pokémon that used this move can't use it again during that battle.
    Attrition: The user protects themselves against all moves. If the user performs any other move after this one, this move will fail until the user switches out.
    Sabotage: The User Sabtages the opponent, preventing them from performing their intended action. Afterward, this move becomes disabled for 5 turns.
    (Intended action refers to using any move, as well as switching out. This only targets one Pokémon in a double battle).
    Decoy: This Pokémon uses a decoy as bait for a trap, protecting them from all moves and damaging the opponent for half of their max HP. However, this move usually goes last.

    • @MattBudYT
      @MattBudYT  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Less about distribution as mentioned in the video and more about the move in a general sense.
      King’s Shield is great on aegislash and pretty much necessary with its ability.
      But say on Smeargle, or any other mon that theoretically would use it, it wouldn’t have the effect of switching forms. So just the effect of blocking attacking moves and lowering attack on contact was factored, while not blocking status moves was the main “con”.
      A move like Bulwark is higher due to inflicting a status that usually can’t just be switched out and fixed like an attack drop. So the payoff is generally a lot better which is why I ranked it higher despite King’s Shield being more useful on Aegislash than Bulwark is on Gouging Fire.

    the reason you would want lower pp is encore. if the move you get encore locked into runs out of PP the encore stops. in VGC games are so fast you would almost never actually run out of detect PP outside of getting encored.
